Old man smell

In middle age, one begins to worry. Not BO but that smell old people have. We are probably unaware of it. Should one start using way de cologne somewhat liberally? Besides bathing daily and deodorant of course.

by Anonymousreply 94March 26, 2020 7:40 AM

Scrub up with a mixture of Ajax, Pin-sol and bleach OP. Use a Brillo pad.

by Anonymousreply 2October 22, 2019 2:45 AM

Bathing?

Yeah. Marinating in your urine and fecal fragments is very de-scenting.

Finish with a shower, at least.

"Old man smell" is just your ageism showing, and you're trying to be funny with it.

Don't blame older people for the fact your pussy stinks, Cherylus.

by Anonymousreply 3October 22, 2019 2:50 AM

Cologne doesn't help. The changes in your hormone levels, your circulation, your skin are insurmountable. You can put on cologne, but you'll just smell like an old man drenched in chemicals. Women notice when they're in their 40s that their perfumes don't smell the same on them anymore. Same with men. Colognes aren't the same. They just don't smell good on you anymore.

I find as I get older my hygiene gets less and less.

by Anonymousreply 8October 22, 2019 3:48 AM

Old people lose their sense of smell so don’t realize that they smell like urine and dusty clothes.

by Anonymousreply 9October 22, 2019 4:08 AM

Is it that they no longer care or is it an odor they can't control even if they're vigilant?

by Anonymousreply 10October 22, 2019 4:38 AM

[quote] Old people lose their sense of smell so don’t realize that they smell like urine and dusty clothes.

That's not what old people smell is. It's not urine, it's not mothballs, it's not old clothing. Work in a nursing home and you'll know what it is. It's almost a lack of a smell. When you're younger your body has a lot going on and most of it is geared towards reproduction - attracting someone to have sex with you. Pheromes, ,hormones, capillary flow, glands that produce sweat, sebum, cerumen; follicles, mucus production....so many things your body produces, most of which you're not even aware of. All of these things contribute to your body aroma and all of these things change as you age. Most of them decrease dramatically. Look at old white people. As they get into their 70s their skin gets white, their hair gets white and sparse (except for nose and shoulder hair in men), the melanin in their skin that used to be evenly spread out just falters and people get moles, brown keratoses, flat speckled age spots. Those are the changes you can see. Inside of you things are changing. You're drying up. Your skin, hair, tongue, mouth .....all are dried up. You don't produce the same moisture you used to produce. This all affects your body aroma. It's not a "bad" smell. It's a smell of things that are missing. The best way I can describe it is "sharply astringent." Almost bloodless.

I can't imagine doing this. Seems so depressing.

That's interesting r11.

I'm asking about MY old man smell r3. How is that ageist?

by Anonymousreply 13October 22, 2019 4:51 AM

I have noticed I have the smell of old man butt. I now have to wash my bum twice a day. !

by Anonymousreply 14October 22, 2019 4:53 AM

I fear not noticing any unpleasant smell I might have. Why? Because now I’m noticing smells in some friends and family members I’d never noticed before. And I really don’t think those are due to suddenly poorer hygiene. I don’t know.

by Anonymousreply 15October 22, 2019 4:57 AM

Does diet have anything to do with the way old people smell?

by Anonymousreply 16October 23, 2019 2:03 AM

If you eat a lot of garlic and curry you'll smell like garlic and curry just like when you were youn and smelled like garlic and curry.

by Anonymousreply 17October 23, 2019 5:02 AM

I think it’s just lazy hygiene. Wearing clothes too long between cleaning. Going too long between showers. Urinary incontinence, if you shower, and that includes bending down to scrub your feet; wash your clothes; and attend to your self properly, you’ll be ok.

Old people often live in the same place for long periods and you have to clean. This means periodically, under the bed; under the refrigerator; vacuuming the drapes; dust the tops of cabinets, etc.

Young people want nothing to do with you because you're old, not because of your smell.

by Anonymousreply 21November 10, 2019 5:33 AM

Two or three years ago, there was some discussion regarding an article that described the benefits of using soap with persimmon extract to combat "old people smell."

As I recall, the article seemed like an advert for the soap. Here's another one, though, that mentions persimmon without coming across as such as sales pitch. It might be something worth considering.

r11 - That is why I pay my young neighbor to wear my clothes the day before I wear them.

by Anonymousreply 23November 10, 2019 5:52 AM

A lot of old people smell of PPP (Piss, Poo & Powder). The powder is used to cover up the piss and poo smell but it only makes it worse.

by Anonymousreply 24November 10, 2019 5:53 AM

Don't worry I'll have my Kouros or Lapididus to overwhelm that old man smell. Might even put on some pleated pants so that there's more fabric to eat up the smell.

by Anonymousreply 25November 10, 2019 6:17 AM

[quote]The Monell study also revealed that middle-aged men harbor the most pungent form of the odor, which researchers say could be related to higher testosterone levels.

This is from r22's article, but I don't think it's right. As men age, don't they lose testosterone? Isn't that why male movie stars (looking at you Robert Redford) look like old lesbians?

by Anonymousreply 26November 10, 2019 6:18 PM

I think the reason is: (1) decreased hygiene (plus body is no longer flexible enough to reach nooks and crannies), (2) decreased clothes-washing (laundry), (3) decreased house-cleaning (musty smells migrate to clothing). Plus, when you retire, you think you can get away with doing less (less bathing, less laundry, etc.).

I think slips & falls in the tub/shower cause decreased bathing. People also stop washing their head/scalp/hair and it just plain smells bad.

I hope to always be using my handheld shower head! Don't want to smell bad. Cologne is not the answer.

by Anonymousreply 27November 10, 2019 6:48 PM

I think twice a week, all old people should be lined up and hosed down. It's for the good of society.

by Anonymousreply 28November 10, 2019 6:50 PM

Take bleach baths twice a week. A third of a cup of standard bleach in the standard tub of warm water. Soak until wrinkly (20m). Voila.

by Anonymousreply 29November 10, 2019 6:55 PM

Get one of those hippie deodorant stones and rub it wherever you stink. Works.

by Anonymousreply 30November 10, 2019 7:01 PM

If you never got in the habit of washing your ass, you most likely won't now. P. U.

by Anonymousreply 31November 10, 2019 7:09 PM

Drink coffee every day, Its pleasant smell will radiate from your pores a little when your body absorbs it; it also makes the breath smell better and in my experience, the worst smell old people have is bad/stale breath. Take good care of your mouth hygiene and health as well.

My Irish grandparents house always smelled like athlete’s foot socks. My grandmother didn’t have a washing machine so she probably washed socks in the sink.

by Anonymousreply 40March 3, 2020 11:36 PM

Thank God Datalounge can't be smelled.

by Anonymousreply 41March 3, 2020 11:41 PM

OMG - Please do NOT pour on the cologne. My bf did that and I had to finally ask what he was trying to cover up. All he needed was to wash his hair every morning and his manly parts morning & evening. Problem solved. PLUS, I loved the smell of his shampoo!

by Anonymousreply 42March 3, 2020 11:47 PM

No. The key is to shower daily and CHANGE YOUR SHEETS every week. I cannot emphasize that enough. The bacteria from stagnant sheets combines with your sweat to create old man smell.

by Anonymousreply 43March 3, 2020 11:49 PM

R32 I hate coffee breath! Having it or smelling it! Ugh.

by Anonymousreply 44March 3, 2020 11:53 PM

by Anonymousreply 45March 4, 2020 12:15 AM

R43 Changing sheets! YES. Especially after sex. And if you haven't had sex, then at least once a week!

by Anonymousreply 46March 4, 2020 12:17 AM

I admit since retirement I do shower less. Especially if I have no plans. I do think it’s better for your skin if you don’t shower daily. The most I’ll go is 4 days without showers. But I’m in Florida and my condo complex has a nice pool, so I feel clean after a swim.

by Anonymousreply 47March 4, 2020 12:21 AM

i'm in my 50s and i haven't used cologne in years and years.. right or wrong but i figure between the scented soap and the scented deodorant and the fact i take a shower every day, do i really need any cologne?.

by Anonymousreply 48March 4, 2020 12:26 AM

R47 I don't shower as often since retirement either. But doesn't the chlorine the pool dry out your skin? Or make you smell like chlorine? I agree that showering too often can dry out the skin. It made sense to shower every day when I exerted myself (in any way) during the day. Now, not so much....

by Anonymousreply 49March 4, 2020 12:31 AM

I read somewhere that the body is dying as one ages which can also contribute.

by Anonymousreply 50March 4, 2020 12:31 AM

My stepfather is nearing 70 and I'm beginning to notice that he's starting to smell exactly the way my late grandpa (from my mother's side) smelled: it's a very unpleasant, almost sour-like smell. I spent a few days at my parents' house recently and I noticed he stank the most in the mornings, right after waking up. My grandpa's bedroom and his bedding smelled the same way so I think that smell has something to do with night sweats, because I also helped my stepdad with some construction work last summer and he definitely didn't smell that way when he was covered from the usual sun-induced sweat. Old people change their bedding very rarely so that's probably one of the reasons they are covered in that smell all the time; changing your sheets and having morning showers can probably do a lot to prevent it.

by Anonymousreply 51March 4, 2020 12:47 AM

R51 Yes, you and the previous posters are correct about changing the bedding. I know this from experience being an elder gay! I didn't realize it happened to me until I...well, let's just say it was an embarrassing experience.

I like to wear clove, spice and and olive oil tinctures for aches and it has the side benefit of smelling pleasant and masking body odor for the days between baths in the winter.

by Anonymousreply 54March 5, 2020 1:23 AM

I wish death would come. I’m tired of of being old & being the subject of ridicule. I hope those younger than us have it 8x worse. Every disease, you name it...they deserve it. Die.

by Anonymousreply 56March 5, 2020 3:23 AM

DO NOT bathe every day. The constant washing & scrubbing only aggravates the old man aromatics and causes them to kick in double strength. Just wear layers of clean clothes.

by Anonymousreply 57March 5, 2020 3:35 AM

[quote] I like to wear clove, spice and and olive oil tinctures for aches and it has the side benefit of smelling pleasant and masking body odor for the days between baths in the winter.

I doubt you're completely masking B.O. with these "tinctures." Jump in the shower and at least lather up your armpits and genitals/ass area. You're not fooling anyone.

Get one of those Waterpik handheld shower heads on the hose and focus on those areas (pits and crotch), at least.

If you have a large sink or basin, shampoo your hair in there.

I know it's tempting in the winter to skip showers, but this is a very bad habit.

by Anonymousreply 58March 5, 2020 3:35 AM

keep your butt clean

by Anonymousreply 59March 5, 2020 4:10 AM

OP, no one cares enough to smell you anyway. Just learn to accept your fate.

by Anonymousreply 60March 5, 2020 4:27 AM

When you get older you have fewer “good” bacteria in your skin and fungus can run rampant in skin folds, even among skinny people. Think about it - that old skin drops and hangs down. Those sags and hanging wrinkles are rubbing against the skin underneath them. Use Selsen Blue for showering along with shampooing. Get some 2% antifungal cream from amazon & put underneath the saggy skin, especially along the elastic band of underwear and for ladies... under the old milk bags.

by Anonymousreply 61March 15, 2020 10:01 PM

What you need to worry about is old man mouth. I kissed a guy who claimed to be late 40s or 50. The mouth said otherwise. It was like kissing someone with no teeth (but he had teeth, strangely). There was a clammy quality as well, as I recall. My abiding impression was that parts of him were collapsing. I couldn't return for seconds.

by Anonymousreply 62March 15, 2020 10:12 PM

In some article about online dating a forty-something woman told of a date she had with a man who was attractive, fit, well off. But he had an "old man" smell. He wasn't in his seventies, he was only in his fifties. She said she didn't continue dating him; there was nothing off-putting about him at all, but she couldn't get past the "old man" smell, which she said had something to do with hormones as a person ages.

by Anonymousreply 63March 15, 2020 10:22 PM

It's been mentioned several times but worth repeating - wash.your.sheets.often.

Also, use Hibiclens on pits, private parts and under skin folds regularly.

by Anonymousreply 64March 15, 2020 10:23 PM

Skin fungus gives a off a slightly sour, cheesy smell from the skin folds & a dirty socks smell from the feet. A front loading washer adds a mildew smell to clothes & bed linens. Use Affresh tabs & do a bleach wash after. Use borax with your detergent.

I had to drop a check off at a Tampa title company the other day and quickly noticed 1. the all female Staff 2. that all the office chairs were thick upholstered and then 3. suddenly the smell of old woman dirty vagina.

It was a very obvious smell but the staff obviously didn’t. It smelled like an un air conditioned Nyc Subway car at the height of August.

by Anonymousreply 68March 15, 2020 11:03 PM

When I was growing up I noticed that the inside of my grandfather's hat had a distinct aroma.

Now, unfortunately, I am noticing that same smell inside of my own hats.

It don't smell like no Madelaine, either, even though it brings me right back to my childhood...

by Anonymousreply 69March 15, 2020 11:18 PM

Hibiclens is fantastic for killing bacteria, I always keep a pump bottle of it in my shower. It thoroughly cleans your feet, secret garden and pits. I also think most people don't drink enough water.

by Anonymousreply 70March 15, 2020 11:23 PM

I think I’ll use moisturizer more often now. I apply aloe vera gel now and then but a jar of old fashioned cream might be better. What think thou fellow elder gays?

by Anonymousreply 71March 16, 2020 1:20 AM

Not sure if this is true but my friend is in her mid 50’s and dates mostly older men. She said a particular man smelled amazing, better than anyone she’d ever dated and that he worked out to a sweat everyday . He wore a sweatshirt and sweatpants to try to sweat as much as possible. Maybe sauna would do the same to cleanse body of toxins which might be what contributes to old man smell.

Are you bathing / showering / exfoliating (using a wash cloth)? Make sure you're clean before you slather on a moisturizer. What is "old fashioned cream"? I don't see any benefit to using aloe vera gel unless you have a sunburn.

The Japanese persimmon soap is hella expensive. Use any antibacterial body soap and a loofah or abrasive bath pouf.

by Anonymousreply 77March 16, 2020 11:13 AM

So long as you bathe daily and use deodorant, the only thing you need to be sure of is wearing fresh clothes. I have found that most older that have a smell is because they wear clothes for many days or even weeks before washing them.

by Anonymousreply 78March 16, 2020 12:14 PM

I am itching like crazy these days after I take a shower, my skin gets so dry. I use a moisturizing soap, moisture shampoo & put moisturizer on my skin as soon as I get out of the shower. I had to switch from my Neutrogena moisturizer to CeraVe with a topical anesthetic in it because my skin is so dry & itchy. Using cool water, not hot. This might be a reason old people shower less.

by Anonymousreply 81March 20, 2020 4:12 PM

There is a fabulous episode of the original Law & Order where Tony Roberts plays an aging senator who is sleeping around and Kathy Baker plays his aging wife and she decides to get revenge by taking a boy toy. At any rate, I can't remember it verbatim but during the final scene she gets to scream at him about his viagra and hair transplants and his OLD MAN SMELL.

There's an "old woman" smell too, but I don't think it has anything to do with the vagina. It's just that smell women get when they're older, due to hormonal changes.

by Anonymousreply 92March 26, 2020 4:34 AM

There’s a product called Hydrophor I get from VA. MY itching and rashes were the result of eczema caused by TOO MUCH showering. However, one should shower at least on alternating days, wash ass, pits, and genitals every day, and change sheets weekly. But after showering, when skin’s still moist, apply hydrophor to hold it in. Partly petroleum jelly, with that greasy feel, but it works and soaks into skin. No problems since. And no noticeable smell—yet.

by Anonymousreply 93March 26, 2020 5:32 AM

It's a real thing and Wikipedia has an article about it called "Old People Smell." It's not that bad if you are otherwise clean and healthy.
