I’m not sure about being a great beauty, but she had a rare level of charisma that you rarely find. Check out the video. You can tell she was still new to performing. But every so often, she breaks out with this infectious smile.

She also had a characteristic posture when she sang, she tended to stick her neck out in an odd way.

R5 is the "I hate white gays and want to cut their throats" homeless poster "with a high-end education" who is "the only black man posting on the DL."

You'll notice he always invokes age. He frequently goes off his head when Miss Warwick posts, because he lacks the capacity to discern the difference between pro-equity social commentary and racism.

Despite calling for death here, like lunatics of his ilk do, he is correct in his insane, foul way in calling out the pointless "one black celebrity looks like another" nastiness of this OP's "humor."

Sometimes even the low drooling curs among us are right. Would that his nose was always so apt and his toothless growl softened to sensibly make a comment without wanting to kill people with it.

by Anonymousreply 64October 20, 2019 10:57 PM

Miss Ross' birth name was Diana, R62. At some point, she changed it to Diana, but I don't know if it is was legally changed.

Miss Ross' nemesis and arch-enemy, her former group member, Mary Wilson, still refers to her as Diane as a way to goad her, but Ross never takes the bait. So yes, it is considered a put-down.

by Anonymousreply 65October 20, 2019 11:04 PM

That should read her birth name is Diane.

by Anonymousreply 66October 20, 2019 11:04 PM

Thanks R65. Why does Mary hate Diana? If this is something that I'm supposed to know because I'm gay, I'll have to turn in my gay card.

The feud between Miss Ross and Miss Wilson is legendary, R67. The three original members of the group were Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard. Motown owner Barry Gordy saw something special in Diana and took a very active interest in her career, and pretty much ignoring Wilson and Ballard. At Barry's urging, Diana eventually left the group for a solo career, upon which he spent millions of dollars promoting her singing and future movie career. The two other girls highly resented this, especially Florence, who was increasingly becoming dependent on alcohol. Florence was fired by Gordy after being late and showing up drunk for concerts or not showing up at all. Florence had a brief, unsuccessful solo career, and she died an untimely death in 1976, completely broke. Florence was replaced by Cindy Birdsong. When Ross left the group, she was replaced by Jean Terrell.

It didn't help the relationships between Ross, Wilson and Ballard that Ross and Gordy were fucking, which both Ross and Gordy, for whatever reason, vehemently denied, even after that fact the Ross' first born child is Barry's child. It's only been in the last several years that Ross and Gordy both acknowledged that Gordy was the biological child of Ross' oldest daughter, Rhonda, to absolutely no one else's surprise.

Post Ross, the Supremes career prospered, with such hits as Up the Ladder to the Roof, Stoned Love, Nathan Jones, etc. At one point the new Supremes were outselling Ross' solo career. Gordy then put even bigger amounts of money into Ross' solo career, to the detriment of not only the reformulated Supremes, but other established Motown acts like the Four Tops, Gladys Knight and the Pips, the Spinners, Martha and the Vandellas. This caused a lot of rancor, and most of these groups eventually left for other recording companies. Gordy, however, owned the rights to the name The Supremes, and put them on the back burner then and for the immediate future. The Supremes as a group literally died on the vine.

Legend has it that Ross showed up at Florence's funeral and caused quite a scene, which only irked Florence's family and Mary Wilson even more. Legend also has it that Ross bailed out Ballard with money many times, and paid for the funeral.

In 1983, Motown Records had its 25th anniversary celebration, which was televised by NBC and had enormous ratings, one of the reasons being was the advertised reunion of Diana, Mary and Cindy. Things did not go well, and its was reported Diana shoved Mary out of the way at one point. Of course the confrontation was edited out of the broadcast, and Motown PR insisted the confrontation never happened. Others who were there at the time claimed it did indeed happen.

Circa 1995, there was an attempt at a reunion tour, which if it would have occurred, would have been a tremendous success. When Mary found out Ross was going to be paid millions, and Cindy and Mary were going to be paid a fraction of that amount, Mary backed out and the tour never happened, at least not the Diana, Mary and Cindy. Diana scavenged around for some other ex-Supremes, and they went on tour, but no one was interested and the tour was eventually abandoned.

Hopefully this will assist you in obtaining your Gay Card, R67. Make me proud.

by Anonymousreply 69October 20, 2019 11:48 PM

Thank you R69. What a great story. Thanks again!

by Anonymousreply 70October 20, 2019 11:54 PM

I should add that after her initial slump, Ross' solo career skyrocketed and she had numerous solo hits between the years 1972 and 1985. Two of her movies, Lady Sings the Blues and Mahogany, were tremendous commercial successes, and Ross earned an Oscar nomination for best actress for the former, losing out to Liza Minnelli for Cabaret.

You can only imagine the intense envy Wilson, Birdsong and Ballard must have felt when their careers were foundering or non-existent and their former group mate's career was soaring to spectacular heights. .

by Anonymousreply 77October 21, 2019 3:46 AM

Just to add to R69's brief history of The Supremes, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson started the The Primettes and recruited Betty Travis and Diane Ross. When they signed with Motown, they were down to a trio and Berry Gordy told them to change their name, and thus The Supremes was born.

Initially, the girls took turns singing lead, with Flo, having the better R&B/gospel inflected voice, the main lead. However, after a couple of years with no hits, Gordy put Diana front and center and pushed the other two to background vocals. Gordy felt that with a switch to pop and Diana's lighter, baby girl voice, they could reach a wider (and whiter) audience. And he was right. The Supremes scored hit after hit. At first, Flo and Mary were cool to the change because it meant more hits, more fame, and more money. But after Gordy changed their name to Diana Ross & The Supremes, they realized they were being marginalized. Depressed, Flo took to drinking and eating excessively, and thus began her downfall.

r67: In 1986, Mary Wilson released her autobiography "Dreamgirl: My Life as a Supreme", and Mary did not paint a flattering picture of Miss Ross.

According to J. Randy Taraborrelli's 2007 biography, Diana Ross, Wilson approached Ross in 1986 to discuss the book; however, Ross reportedly snubbed Wilson upon learning that the book featured her in a very negative light. Because the book contained much unknown information about Ross' alleged diva-ish behavior onstage and off, some people jokingly referred to the book as "Diana Dearest" .

And throughout the entire book, Mary referred to Diana Ross as simply Diane.
