Babycakes (1989)

With an all-star cast - Ricki Lake, Craig Sheffer and Betty Buckley - "Babycakes" is a heart-warming classic tale illustrating that even fat chicks get lucky sometimes.

i was in an acting class in NYC with Craig Sheffer a few years before this... he was nice guy, but i never could have seen the breaks that came his way. he was just another good looking guy in a city full of them..... go figure.

After seeing Some Kind of Wonderful, Craig Sheffer was the prototype of the unattainable guy I desired from afar for years.

The instant classic BABYCAKES aired thirty-one years ago tonight, February 14, 1989, the greatest Valentine's Day gift ever.

He looks pretty mature in those pics with Ricky - like Danny Aiello.

by Anonymousreply 6February 15, 2020 4:48 AM

Ricki has aged much better than him.

by Anonymousreply 7February 15, 2020 4:50 AM

Goodness. Ricki was certainly a big bouncy girl back then.

by Anonymousreply 8February 15, 2020 4:55 AM

I can still hear the title song.

by Anonymousreply 9February 15, 2020 4:56 AM

I prefer the original 1985 German movie Zuckerbaby starring the incomparable Marianne Sägebrecht (of Bagdad Cafe.)

Otis Redding wrote the theme tune.

This was long before DVRs, and most people watched it live in real time, which is surprising considering how many people remember it.

by Anonymousreply 12February 15, 2020 5:21 AM

Was this based on Tales of the City?

by Anonymousreply 13February 15, 2020 6:39 AM

Did he give her oral?

by Anonymousreply 16February 15, 2020 7:36 PM

Yikes indeed, R15. Craig Sheffer turned into Steven Seagal.

I went on a couple of dates with Ricki Lake around this time and I remember watching this in my dorm room when it aired and calling her and telling her how good she was. I think that was the last time I ever spoke to her.

by Anonymousreply 18February 15, 2020 8:16 PM

A "Babycakes" reboot would do wonders for our politically divided nation's morale

Wait, what? Were you closeted?

by Anonymousreply 20February 17, 2020 4:36 AM

Holy shit, R15. He looks like a guy on death row.

by Anonymousreply 21February 17, 2020 4:37 AM

[quote] Wait, what? Were you closeted?

I was 18. I had just moved to NYC. I was figuring it all out still.

She ghosted you after she got famous?

by Anonymousreply 23February 17, 2020 8:01 AM

Ghosted by Ricki Lake. That's harsh.

by Anonymousreply 24February 17, 2020 9:04 AM

Ricki looks great now.

by Anonymousreply 25February 17, 2020 9:52 AM

R24 Ghosted by Ricki Lake could be a new one person show in the vein of Buyer and Cellar, I think you have theatrical gold if you are interested in pursuing it.

by Anonymousreply 26February 17, 2020 1:02 PM

I loved this movie. Was it made for TV? Can't remember.

by Anonymousreply 27February 17, 2020 1:32 PM

Yes--made by CBS but usually shown by Lifetime! Too nauseating even for Hallmark.

Sheffer looks awful in R15's pic. Looks like he's doing direct to streaming stuff recently.

Apparently spent most of the past few years taking care of his mother (Alzheimer's) and his brother, soap writer Hogan Sheffer (heart problems) in his hometown of York, PA. probably not a bad guy.

[quote] She ghosted you after she got famous?

Hahaha. I think it was more of a mutual thing. Plus I was realizing I was kind of in love with a guy I was in school with.

The other funny thing was I was actually going to school at the same time with Colleen Fitzpatrick. We weren't friends but she was working at the University part time with one of my best friends from my studio.

by Anonymousreply 30February 17, 2020 2:27 PM

Wow, R29, if that's true, then I hope for the best for him. Anyone who deals with Dementia/Alzheimer's knows it's hell.

by Anonymousreply 31February 17, 2020 2:36 PM

Craig Sheffer was not afraid of nudity when he was young and hot. I was grateful to him as teen for showing off his nice plump cock in the 90s horror Nightbreed. Andy Warhol also took nude pictures of him early on, supposedly in some of them, he had an erection.
