I Thought Bretons and Britons Were The Same Thing

what was I thinking?

by Anonymousreply 17October 8, 2019 7:12 PM

I only recently learned that some people objected to people like me calling them 'Brits'. After all these years, I'm now very careful, since I'm usually not intentionally offensive (other than for joking purposes). But I do know that Brittany is quite separate from Great Britain.

Is there really a meaningful difference. All Bretons are Britons, but not all Britons are Bretons.

Except for an anthropologist, few people would make a huge distinction. Couldn't you just use Britons and avoid the problem?

Bretons??

[quote]Bretons??

If only there were a source for simple bits of information when one is confused.

I mean, we're in the information age. You'd think someone would have come up with something for people to find information, like a network or web or something where you could search for information, perhaps through some sort of searching tool or engine.

R3 Bretons are people from the west of France, in Brittany. And unlike what I've read above they have the same ancestors. They are Celtic just like the Irish and Scottish with the same traditions. If Britons were not full of hate towards the French, for no reason other than being xenophobic as you can see with their brexshit they would be honest. In fact Brits and French are cousins because their common history which started more than1000 years ago and also because France is England nearest neighbors.

I usually think of Bretons as these. I seem to remember a variety that came in a tin.

[quote]The Britons, also known as Celtic Britons or Ancient Britons, were Celtic people who inhabited Great Britain from at least the British Iron Age into the Middle Ages, at which point their culture and language diverged into the modern Welsh, Cornish and Bretons (among others).

Halloween was a Celtic celebration before the USA turns it into a business

R2, you have a They Might Be Giants song in the making there.

Not only that but Germans and French are brothers. The Franks (a Germanic tribe) lived in both areas, after Charlemagne died (he ruled them all) he gave a third of his kingdom to each of his some. One became West Francia (later France) and the other became East Francia (renamed the Holy Roman Empire, which became the genesis of modern Germany)

I daresay so did my liege-lord, OP. I never took it personally.

It's alright, there are other qualities one can cultivate beside a broad knowledge of foreign affairs & culture.

The twink who beguiles Louis Garrel in the LES CHANSONS D'AMOUR musical film from 2007 is a Breton.

In one line of the final song duet, the character sings that he himself smells of "the ocean, and lemons", i.e. like the coast of Brittany.
