Egg Nog

Anyone else a fan of this delightfully decadent beverage? Is it in stores yet? I haven't been in a while and would love to pick some up this season!

I just lost 25 pounds but there are light versions/recipes and I love an eggnog latte!

by Anonymousreply 1October 6, 2019 10:44 PM

Those of you in Florida are lucky as Publix eggnog is great.

by Anonymousreply 2October 6, 2019 10:46 PM

I love it but it has SO many calories.

by Anonymousreply 3October 6, 2019 10:47 PM

I know... that's why I usually buy one carton per season. I may have bought two last year though, hahah.

by Anonymousreply 4October 6, 2019 10:57 PM

No it's too early. Eggnog will come out in time for Thanksgiving.

by Anonymousreply 5October 6, 2019 11:19 PM

Ha! I was just searching the store to see if they had the Califia almond milk nog yet. That stuff is like crack to me...

R6 is it really that good? I'd be down to try a delicious, healthier alternative as well as the traditional nog. I think I've seen that in stores seasons past.

by Anonymousreply 7October 6, 2019 11:50 PM

The soy nog at whole wallet is great too..so delicious brand

by Anonymousreply 8October 7, 2019 12:13 AM

I love it, R7. Don't know what else to say but give it a try it and see if you like it. I have found that it's usually cheapest at Target

by Anonymousreply 9October 7, 2019 1:18 AM

R9 Cool! I'll definitely give it a try this season!

by Anonymousreply 10October 7, 2019 1:23 AM

It's in stores now in Pittsburgh.

by Anonymousreply 11October 7, 2019 1:23 AM

It's in stores in the PNW.

by Anonymousreply 12October 7, 2019 2:01 AM

R12 Is it? Do you have it up there year 'round, or did they put them up relatively recently?

by Anonymousreply 13October 7, 2019 2:03 AM

hate that shit. hate it, always hated it. have no idea why anyone has ever liked it.

by Anonymousreply 14October 7, 2019 2:07 AM

R13, fairly recently, I think. I've seen it in Safeway and Fred Meyer's. We do like our beverages, but it's not available year round.

by Anonymousreply 15October 7, 2019 2:09 AM

I really got a taste for this stuff one Christmas in my early 20s and guzzled it every night after work (without adding alcohol). Back then I didn't give a thought to what I ate because I'd always been thin. I ballooned on egg nog. It was my awakening to watching what I consumed. Now - I can have about one glass spiked with bourbon per Christmas and no more.

by Anonymousreply 16October 7, 2019 2:12 AM

OP, do you drink it straight or fortify it with spirits?

by Anonymousreply 17October 7, 2019 2:13 AM

Borden has a canned egg nog that is available all year for those who just have to have it in year-round.. I've never tried it - the idea of it is revolting.

R17 I've never tried it with alcohol, but I've heard good things!

R18 Grody. Hard pass.

by Anonymousreply 19October 7, 2019 2:22 AM

Rum or Bourbon with a little sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg is quite tasty with egg nog. I try to limit them to about two per season, but they make me feel all holiday-like.

This will be of limited use, but might be worth mentioning anyway.

In Western Canada, Save On Foods has eggnog available now. What I'm looking forward to, though, is the Western Family (store brand) eggnog ice cream. Damn, it's good! I definitely recommend it to anyone who likes eggnog and has access to it.

They had it for Christmas last year, but it sold out before I was able to stockpile any of it. If they have it again this year, I'll get an extra tub or two to tuck into the back of the freezer for cravings during the summer.

by Anonymousreply 23October 7, 2019 2:40 AM

Egg nog ice cream sounds... insane! I don't know if I've ever seen that here in Southern California, but I'll have to keep an eye out. I wonder if I should make home made egg nog this season... has anyone done it? Is it a chore?

by Anonymousreply 24October 7, 2019 2:42 AM

Egg Nog ice cream has been around forever. I'm sure that even trend setting Southern California gets it.

by Anonymousreply 25October 7, 2019 2:49 AM

[quote] Egg nog ice cream sounds... insane!

To me, drinking egg nog is like drinking melted ice cream. So egg nog ice cream makes perfect sense.

by Anonymousreply 26October 7, 2019 2:49 AM

I only like it if the nogs are farm fresh.

by Anonymousreply 27October 7, 2019 2:51 AM

I only like it if the nutmeg is locally sourced.

by Anonymousreply 28October 7, 2019 2:56 AM

Weight watchers has a recipe using fat free half n half and rum extract. I’ve heard home made real egg nog is awesome but I’ve only had the commercial kind and only with coffee.

by Anonymousreply 29October 7, 2019 3:05 AM

What are the thickest egg nogs with the best flavor? Every year I forget which brand is the shitty watery eggnog and get pissed when I get home and realize it was the watery brand.

Also, has anyone tried the Southern Comfort eggnog? I never have but it looks interesting.

by Anonymousreply 30October 7, 2019 3:33 AM

I can vouch for the Southern Comfort egg nog. It's quite rich... some might argue a bit too rich? Either way, you won't be saddled with watery nog if you get it.

by Anonymousreply 31October 7, 2019 3:41 AM

I’ve made the Martha Stewart recipe of the nogg. It uses raw eggs and you whip it up in a frenzy.

I think the rum, cognac and bourbon kill any salmonella that might be lurking. It’s not that difficult to make.

😜🤪

by Anonymousreply 32October 7, 2019 4:20 AM

Christmas cum.

by Anonymousreply 33October 7, 2019 4:36 AM

Does the almond milk version taste just like the dairy version? If I didn't know that it was almond milk, would I be able to tell the difference?

by Anonymousreply 34October 7, 2019 4:43 AM

I saw it in my local stores today, along with those packaged break-and-bake Christmas cookies. I can only drink it spiked. If there's no rum in it, I see no point.

by Anonymousreply 35October 7, 2019 5:04 AM

r28 lives in Grenada.

by Anonymousreply 36October 7, 2019 5:10 AM

R20, or brandy.

by Anonymousreply 37October 7, 2019 5:39 AM

I used to make the version with raw eggs. It's what one did back in the day. Now one is not supposed to eat raw eggs so I don't see the point. The commercial stuff seems like shit.

by Anonymousreply 38October 7, 2019 5:58 AM

I love me some nog.

by Anonymousreply 39October 7, 2019 6:16 AM

My Costco had it on Thursday - units of two half-gallons. I'm in Oregon. I grabbed it and froze one of them.

The Southern Comfort stuff is indeed very rich.

by Anonymousreply 40October 7, 2019 6:22 AM

Gives me the runs

by Anonymousreply 41October 7, 2019 6:29 AM

I think even a couple tablespoons makes a good latte with some milk as it’s too sweet otherwise

by Anonymousreply 42October 7, 2019 7:04 AM

I love Egg Nog, but it’s not really a thing here in the UK outside of Starbucks. We adopt so much of American culture but for some reason Egg Nog hasn’t made the transition yet. It’s a shame. Anyone know of a good recipe? I might make some myself. x

by Anonymousreply 43October 7, 2019 7:22 AM

Egg Nog is American in origin? I would have thought it was a European thing from long ago or something... I should look into it.

by Anonymousreply 44October 7, 2019 7:42 AM

R44, me too! I wonder if it’s regional.

I think the pasteurized, cardboard commercial ones with the carrageenan thickening are quite tasty. One year we had someone’s homemade, and it made me gag. I think we used to get the Hood brand.

R38 In today's world, I assume the egg yolks are from pasturized eggs.

by Anonymousreply 46October 7, 2019 9:37 AM

Egg is my favorite nog.

by Anonymousreply 47October 7, 2019 10:41 AM

Love it. Tastes like warm and fuzzies.

by Anonymousreply 48October 7, 2019 11:18 AM

R43, this looks like the recipe I used to make. It's been 30 years or more, but I see it contains the essential elements of whipped cream and egg whites. The stuff you buy in the store? No whipped egg whites. I only used to use brandy, as I can't stand rum or the brown liquors.

Another shout out for Southern Comfort brand. It's thicker than most and I make sure to get some every year. I don't add alcohol as I don't drink.

Trader Joe's is very good, as well. So is the Borden's stuff in the can, but I can never seem to find it anymore.

Oberweis is expensive and no better than SC.

Turkey Hill Farm is also very good.

by Anonymousreply 51October 7, 2019 2:52 PM

This is a great recipe, but I would use pasteurized eggs for this recipe.

There are Youtube videos on how to easily pasteurize eggs.

Aren't the great big nog farms in Upper Michigan?

by Anonymousreply 53October 7, 2019 11:00 PM

Turkey Hill Farm is in Pennsylvania.

by Anonymousreply 54October 7, 2019 11:09 PM

Damn. I just came back from Trader Joe’s and I forgot the nog.

by Anonymousreply 55October 7, 2019 11:21 PM

I'm gonna pick some up on Wednesday if I can!

by Anonymousreply 56October 7, 2019 11:38 PM

I can't believe you bitches have me craving eggnog in early October! But I refuse to give in and drink my first cup until AFTER Thanksgiving. It's just not proper.

However my Xmas decorations will be going up a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving this year.

by Anonymousreply 57October 7, 2019 11:54 PM

I love egg nog spiked with Maker’s Mark!

by Anonymousreply 58October 7, 2019 11:54 PM

[quote]However my Xmas decorations will be going up a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving this year.

I'd say that's a far more blasphemous offense. Egg Nog, while yes, quite the Christmas drink, I can still buy as being a fall-winter season beverage. Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving bother me. The day after? Go nuts.

by Anonymousreply 59October 8, 2019 12:02 AM

Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving? My God--that's worse than wearing white after Labor Day. Your gay card should be rescinded.

by Anonymousreply 60October 8, 2019 12:29 AM

OOOHHH, just love me some nog! Right out the carton, all chemicals! I really do....I'm eager to check out the Southern Comfort nog....

SOY NOG?!?!? Gag me with a spoon.

by Anonymousreply 61October 8, 2019 12:32 AM

When people ask about the origins of food, there's usually some Southerner who will leap in and claim Southern heritage of the item, which often has obvious European and/or African roots. I'm surprised it hasn't happened here---the southern treat of boiled custard is pretty similar, , although some people would argue that it's closer to French vanilla ice cream or a pudding, esp. given the cornstarch and flour used. Regardless, it's an old school favorite that had become difficult to find even 20 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 62October 8, 2019 12:36 AM

r60, what does gay have to do with it? What does gay have to do with Christmas, period?

by Anonymousreply 63October 8, 2019 12:57 AM

Christmas is as gay as a basket of parrots.

by Anonymousreply 64October 8, 2019 1:38 AM

Presumably when it comes to seasonal festivities, the tastes of fraus and gays alike align. Decorative natures abound, and there's nothing more controversial than the ever-nebulous line between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I wonder if Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas is to blame... he essentially fused the holidays, making Thanksgiving feel like a pitstop to the culture. It certainly doesn't help when Home Goods has the pumpkins out with the ornaments.
