Finn Wolfhard
[SPOILERS for IT CHAPTER 2 and THE GOLDFINCH]
-
Just had 2 movies in which he plays a queer character in theatres at the same time. Variety likened his performance in the latter to "a slavic androgynous Bette Davis". Does he qualify for gay icon status yet?
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 132 | December 24, 2020 10:16 PM

Nope. You don't really become a gay icon by playing gay roles. Also, how many male gay icons are there?

Well, I guess it depends on your definition. Currently, Timothee Chalamet comes to mind.

I felt he sucked in The Goldfinch.

R2 Good point. Wolfhard's not Chalamet though... and Goldfinch is no CMBYN.

I know some people on DL are allergic to the word, but I used it deliberately, since his character in IT is gay, but his character in The Goldfinch is bisexual or just bicurious - so "queer" is useful as an umbrella term in this case.

He’s hideous. You have terrible taste, OP.

Do you have a problem with the word [bold]bisexual[/bold] that were unable to say it the first time?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 6, 2019 4:00 PM
|
I wanted to use one word that fits both characters, r19. (I guess I could have gone with LGBT, but Finn hasn't played any trans characters or lesbians yet...). "Queer" has been used like this by gay men for ages, so I don't know why we have to debate it anew everytime someone uses it on DL.

R19 He can't use the world bisexual because any of the characters is bisexual. His character in It is gay, his character in The goldfinch experiments with his friend (and that's all)

Why surgery to look exactly like the other thousands of young actors in HW when your career is going perfectly fine
R25: Wrong, his character is gay in It. It's not canon in the novel (where the sexuality of his character is not touched) but Stephen King was very happy with that change

R28 So, why is it so hard to link to the scene in the film when it is stated the character is homosexual. Just do it
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 7, 2019 12:52 AM

I really don't know why you're being so obtuse, r30. Just because nobody says it out loud in the film doesn't mean it's not clear.
There's a scene where Richie is hyper keen to hang out with a cute boy (a character that only exists for the purpose of this scene) and gets homophobically bullied for it, after which Pennywise taunts him that he knows his "dirty secret". What do you think the "dirty secret" is supposed to be?
Then we see him carving initials into a bench on the "kissing bridge", which at the end are revealed to be his and Eddie's. What do you think was the point of this?

Funny you should mention him.
I just walked out of my screening of his new movie [italic]Omniboat[/italic] at Sundance.
It's a painfully unfunny "comedy" obviously written by stoners while high. Or should I say half-baked?
Finn played a Jewish kid whose crazy uncle takes him out of school to go boating and they run into Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew. There are no jokes, embarrassing moments.
I left one sequence after Finn's it was so lame. I think they were trying to be [italic]Kentucky Fried Movie[/italic] or [italic]Amazon Women on the Moon,[/italic] but those movies had actual jokes. You can't just introduce "objectivesexuals," then have one lick a speedboat and call it a day.
Don't waste your time!

Finn was in a truly terrible, laugh-free “comedy” at Sundance this year called [italic]Omniboat: A Fast Boat Fantasia[/italic] about a motor boat that falls in love, marries a monster truck, has boat children and then gets involved with all kinds of shenanigans with various humans.
It was very Stoner Comedy, only it wasn’t funny. Comedians have to do more than just act weird or embarrassing. They need to write jokes.
Anyway, Wolfhard plays a Jewish kid whose crazy uncle takes him on a wild boat ride on the eve of Wolfhard’s bar mitzvah. They crash a party being held by 2 Live Crew’s Luther Campbell. Not even funny dialogue.
I left halfway through the movie, shortly after Wolfhard’s sequence.and some “objectosexual” lady started licking the boat.
Hated it!

Oscar winner Julianne Moore and [italic]Stranger Things[/italic] star Finn Wolfhard are attached to star in buzzy new comedy-drama movie [italic]When You Finish Saving the World[/italic], which Jesse Eisenberg has written and will direct and which Emma Stone will produce with SNL writer-director Dave McCary and Moore.
CAA Media Finance, which is arranging financing for the film, will rep world distribution rights. The mother-son story is inspired by Eisenberg’s upcoming Audible Original of the same name, which we can reveal is debuting this year.
The movie, whose precise plot details are being kept under wraps, will have a slightly different focus than the audiobook, which has been scripted by and stars Eisenberg. Set over three decades, the six-part audio show will follow three members of a family: Nathan, a father learning to connect with his newborn son; Rachel, a young college student seeking to find her place in a relationship and in life; and Ziggy, a teenager hoping to figure out where he came from, and where he’s headed. Wolfhard will also voice the show and Kaitlyn Dever is in talks to join.
