Because so many of them are familiar to us mostly by dint of their older faces, when they turned to film and TV; but when they were younger stage actors, they were stunning.
Case in point: Mark Rylance.

Mark Rylance was a stunning twink!
Too bad he waited 20 years to get his hard cock sucked on film.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | October 2, 2019 4:01 AM |
Some were still beautiful when they started making movies.

R7 That sure as hell isn't young Patrick Stewart. This is young potato-faced PS:
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 2, 2019 4:23 AM |
Withdrawn. That picture is of the late Andy Whitfield but has been posted elsewhere as Stewart.

Scott Antony (he hasn't made a film in decades but was very hot when he was doing pictures)
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 2, 2019 5:41 AM |
It's Terence, R23. And the first one is far more interesting.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 2, 2019 5:46 AM |
Ray Winstone started out as a boxer, not actor. Cute.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 2, 2019 5:54 AM |
Young looks better than old.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 2, 2019 11:07 AM |
Some of these guys have been in the appreciative public eye since that age: Jude Law, Tom Courtenay, Julian Sands, Derek Jacobi, Terence Stamp ...
by Anonymous | reply 32 | October 2, 2019 11:38 AM |
Many of them have the young British actor look. You know the type. And it's really not that attractive.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | October 2, 2019 11:57 AM |
Mark Rylance was adorable as a young'un. But, even though he's a bit rough looking now, he's incredibly sexy (to me). Maybe it's just because he's so damn good at what he does. He has kind eyes....
by Anonymous | reply 34 | October 2, 2019 3:44 PM |
[quote] It's Terence, [R23]. And the first one is far more interesting.
That's arguable. But the point of this thread is British actors when YOUNG.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 2, 2019 4:27 PM |
Anton Lesser, who these days is in everything (Sir Thomas More in WOLF HALL, Harold Macmillan in THE CROWN).

[quote] Not British but from the UK
Scottish Sean Connery IS British. "British" means "from the isle of Great Britain," which includes England, Scotland, and Wales.

Hugh Laurie (became much more attractive as he aged)
by Anonymous | reply 44 | October 2, 2019 4:40 PM |
Kenneth Branagh looked like a Muppet before he made Henry V.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | October 2, 2019 5:21 PM |
Yes, R37, if you bother to click on the link at R20, you'll see that this younger image of Stamp is superimposed over the more recent Stamp, who still looks not bad at all for 81. I thought that it was an interesting comparison and visual effect.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | October 2, 2019 5:49 PM |
Some of these guys were never attractive, like Hugh Laurie. But I am surprised how many of them were insanely hot (Charles Dance) or adorable (Mark Rylance, Jared Harris). Rylance and Dance have mostly kept their looks, and are handsome in late middle age/old age, but poor Jared Harris really hit a wall.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | October 2, 2019 7:55 PM |
Hey! Rufus Sewell is STILL STUNNING!!
by Anonymous | reply 56 | October 2, 2019 9:00 PM |
Yeech, these people are only hot by British standards. They'd fade away next to the hotties of any other country.
Except for Rufus Sewell and Ioan Gruffudd.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | October 2, 2019 9:03 PM |
Jared Harris wasn't really good looking even when young: bad teeth, bad skin, potato nose.
Young Colin Firth was a hot piece.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | October 2, 2019 9:10 PM |
There will never be a cuter twink than young James McAvoy (who is 40 this year and therefore counts as middle-aged).
by Anonymous | reply 60 | October 2, 2019 9:11 PM |
R60, meh. He’s no Rupert Graves.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | October 2, 2019 9:17 PM |
Mark Rylance is English, but grew up in the U.S.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | October 2, 2019 9:22 PM |
Rupert Graves then, Rupert Graves now, Rupert Graves forever!
by Anonymous | reply 63 | October 2, 2019 9:25 PM |

Robson Green
Check him out in "Touching Evil" and "Reckless"
by Anonymous | reply 66 | October 2, 2019 9:49 PM |
Trevor Howard - not classically handsome but very hawt and that voice . . .
by Anonymous | reply 67 | October 2, 2019 9:50 PM |
Michael Caine
Roger Moore - he was stunning in his early years, if you look at those old reruns of The Saint.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | October 2, 2019 9:53 PM |
Michale Sheen
David Niven (oh the brave pilot in A Matter of Life and Death)!
by Anonymous | reply 69 | October 2, 2019 9:55 PM |
^*Michael Sheen
And another vote for Iain Glen, although after seeing him as the debauched PI in "Jack Taylor", I'd still bed him today.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | October 2, 2019 9:57 PM |
R57 - Yes, who'd want to look at a young Jude Law, eh?
by Anonymous | reply 71 | October 2, 2019 9:58 PM |
Patrick Stewart was hot. He could get it.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | October 2, 2019 10:02 PM |
Jeremy irons is ageless and still a hot daddy. So is charles dance.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | October 2, 2019 10:10 PM |
Michael Caine, David Niven, Roger Moore and Jeremy Irons were international famous stars from a young age. I don’t believe they qualify for what OP is listing

Jeremy Irons at the beginning of his career in a small role from British series, 'The Pallisers' in 1974

Benedict Cumberbatch in his 'penis experimentation' schooldays. Did he have plastic surgery? Because he looks quite different now.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | October 2, 2019 11:15 PM |

R34, I'll scratch your eyes out.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | October 2, 2019 11:46 PM |
R44, I had a huge crush on the younger Hugh Laurie when he was doing British comedies and being goofy and silly. I was happy for him with his ‘House’ success but didn’t find him nearly as appealing.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | October 3, 2019 12:09 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 88 | October 3, 2019 12:33 AM |
Brett was at his peak in '63 in MFL.
Olivier tried to talk him out of leaving the National and going to Hollywood to make the film. I always wondered about that.

That last photo of Sean Connery looks like it was a daguerrotype taken by Julia Margaret Cameron for the opening of the Crystal Palace.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | October 3, 2019 1:22 AM |
Most sources identify that photo as Connery when he was 19, R92. He served in Royal Navy as a stoker from the age 16 until being discharged on medical grounds three years later.

Richard Todd (The Dambusters, The Long and the Short and the Tall) was surprisingly hunky a for British actor of his generation.

by Anonymous | reply 111 | October 3, 2019 5:58 PM |
Ben Whishaw now pushing 40, here at 23 as Prince Hamlet.

Speaking of the dead, the once rising star Edward Judd, most famed for his appearance ias the smart-talking alcoholic reporter in the sci-fi classic "The Day the Earth Caught Fire". Stunning but a problem character whose career never quite jelled as it should have.

Hywel Bennett looked a bit like Zac Efron in Twisted Nerve and then hit the wall hard with his eyebags and face bloat. Did he become a big drinker or something? A shame. He was so pretty.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | October 3, 2019 10:01 PM |
Poor Hywel definitely went from angelic cute to your pervy boozy uncle rather quickly.

Some get better looking with age.
Mark Bonnar in his early 30s...
by Anonymous | reply 122 | October 4, 2019 12:50 AM |
Ewan McGregor in The Pillow Book, when he was in his early 20s. Never looked better, and he went full frontal!
by Anonymous | reply 124 | October 4, 2019 1:21 AM |
Martin Freeman (star of The Hobbit and Sherlock).
by Anonymous | reply 126 | October 4, 2019 3:43 AM |
Young Derek Jacob. Never hot, but had a certain winsome charm.

The Welsh are British.

O'Toole had quite a long nose as seen from the side. He had it done for Lawrence. He went from striking looking to beautiful. He was open about it 'I want to be a movie star.' Of course his drinking made him look old even before he turned 40. And he never really had a big popular hit after Lion. I guess though there are those who would argue for My Favorite Year but it wasn't the sensation Lion was.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | October 4, 2019 3:16 PM |
Damn! I’m straight and even I can find hotter pictures of Derek Jacobi. Anyway, some stills from The Day of the Jackal.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | October 4, 2019 6:19 PM |
He's still not hot there, R134.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | October 4, 2019 6:47 PM |
But I bet he did alright. And he was Cassio in the Olivier Othello which counts for something. I mean you couldn't have Cumberbatch in the role it would be ludicrous.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | October 4, 2019 6:57 PM |
I like Jacobi in that last photo. He looks good and has a strong presence
by Anonymous | reply 137 | October 4, 2019 7:58 PM |
Michael York as a young man. He was a big deal in the 70s, but I could never quite get past the nose.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | October 4, 2019 8:08 PM |
MacCorkindale was a better looking, sexy version of York.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | October 4, 2019 8:12 PM |
I never thought MacCorkindale was much of an actor, though. He was dreadful in Death on the Nile: What helped him is that Mia Farrow and Lois Chiles were even worse.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | October 4, 2019 8:20 PM |
Lois Chiles was very believable as a corpse.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | October 4, 2019 8:24 PM |
This scene in DotN cracks me up every time. She's so, so terrible.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | October 4, 2019 8:35 PM |
I used to think Lois Chiles was terrible until I happened upon Creepshow 2 on night on cable and she was hilarious in that. Intentionally hilarious I should say.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | October 4, 2019 10:16 PM |
Chiles was so beautiful that I was willing to forgive her inept line readings.

Re Jacobi: he has one of the most charming autobiographies I've ever read. Reading about his childhood in the Britain of the 1940s and 1950s was wonderful, especially as his working-class family was close and supportive. It's called "As Luck Would Have It". Recommend it.
