I've never even heard of this, and I live in England!

Just finished the series finale, and cried like a baby. I discovered Durrells when I was stuck in the hospital repeatedly last year. I went back and watched the first seasons to get caught up, and still enjoy rewatching it. I’m going to really miss it, I’ve got an emotional connection to it, the show helped me through some tough times.

I know in real life Larry was married and living on Corfu before the rest of the family came over. After everyone left Corfu because of the war, they never returned even after the war.

Gerald Malcolm Durrell, OBE was a British naturalist, zookeeper, conservationist, author, and television presenter. He founded the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and the Jersey Zoo on the Channel Island of Jersey in 1959. He died at 70 years old in 1995 and his ashes are buried in the Jersey Zoo. The primary purpose of a zoo should be to act as a reserve of critically endangered species which need captive breeding in order to survive.

They definitely took substantial dramatic license with the family. Larry was, as mentioned above, married, where he was portrayed as single on the show.

Leslie was a bit of a loser and Margo apparently lived quite long, marrying right after the start of the war. Larry and Gerald were the two most famous ones.

There was a real Spiro and Theo, but if I recall properly, Spiro was much older in real life and no romantic connection existed between Spiro and Louisa. The real Louisa Durrell looks a bit more like the original Maria von Trapp - dour and sour.

The woman who plays Lugretzia.

Very interesting - this is done in Greek and in some English here and there, which she speaks with a British accent!

I loved this show and will miss it. I thought it was kind of a modern screwball comedy. It was goofy and charming. Will miss it. And rewatch it.

Apparently there is a special this Sunday night on PBS hosted by Keeley Hawes (Louisa) that talks more about the real Durrell family.

The last episode is pure crap. It's like they didn't even try to think up a coherent ending to the show.

The last episode should have ended with Larry and Leslie sucking each other.

It's a crap show. It's 80 minutes about Gerry and 10 minutes about the rest of the family. And poor Leslie gets about 5 seconds of a mention. They keep saying what a close family they were, but nobody seems to know anything about Leslie. Didn't he marry? Have children?

Leslie Stuart Durrell was born in 1918 in Punjab India. He died in 1983 in London of heart failure. He was survived by his wife Doris Durrell. Attached are pictures of Leslie.

Also in the documentary, they interview Princess Anne, both of Gerry's wives, Margot's granddaughter, Spiros great-granddaughter and some women who were schoolgirls in the neighborhood when the Durrells moved back to England.

I thought this last season was bad. I enjoyed the first couple of seasons but the novelty soon wore off.

I looked at a few interviews with Gerry last week. He seemed SO boring.

Theodore Stephanides (21 January 1896 – 13 April 1983) was a Greek poet, author, doctor and naturalist.

Poor Leslie, he was barely mentioned in the Durrell retrospective. Interesting show, did make me feel sad all over again that the series had ended.
