Britain’s Lost Masterpieces, with Dr. Bendor Grosvenor

It has mystery and intrigue, history and...art!

I love it when Bendor Grosvenor and the art restorer Simon Gillespie get catty about shoddy past restorations and techniques of lessor artists.

Grosvenor used to be on another art detective show I love, Fake or Fortune, with Fiona Bruce and Philip Mould. Supposedly Bruce and Mould were miffed when Grosvenor went off to do his own show.

Who watches this art detective show? Who's had Bendor?

Bendor's a toff:

The name Bendor is derived from the Grosvenor family's medieval heraldic shield, a bend or, a golden bend (diagonal stripe), which they used until 1389 when it was claimed instead by the Scrope family, in the case Scrope v Grosvenor. The 2nd Duke of Westminster was nicknamed "Bendor".

Grosvenor is the grandson of The 5th Baron Ebury[13], and a distant relative to the The Duke of Westminster.[14]

He's 41. Is he married?

If not, maybe he just hasn't found the right woman yet.

Team Mould and Bruce. The woman who presents with Bendor now is beyond annoying in her mannerisms.

Bendover is a very old handle.

I dislike Philip Mold intensely, scarvey bastard.

Bendover's annoying co-presenter Emma Dabiri, wrote a book about the history of black people's hair.

[quote] Team Mould and Bruce.

Fake or Fortune is better produced/directed and their formula of solving the art mysteries is more entertaining.

Bendor's show is less focused on the detective work and more educational about the history and context of the art.

But I love both shows equally.

Why's that?

This is the show that discovered a portrait of James I's boyfriend turned out to be a real Rubens.

I saw the episode and they went through the interesting backstory of the gay relationship between James I and George Villiers, the first Duke of Buckingham.

The sidekick is so woke she is unwatchable. She also can’t manage to walk and talk at the same time. You can see her counting her steps in her mind before mewing something about diversity and inclusion. God, I miss Robert Hughes.

Oh Dear, these low-rent wannabes do ruin everything

^ Good catch.

Aren't there more tasteful DL friends who watch this and other art detective shows?

Apparently Simon is straight. I wouldn't have guessed.

"Simon married Cristina Rule in 1970 and they had 3 sons. In 2014 Simon married Phillipa Found."

I’ve gotten hooked on “Fake or Fortune” due to this thread, thanks DL, it’s a great way to pass some time. Bendor is quite interesting looking with that great honking nose. There is still something attractive about him, and I love how posh he is.

by Anonymousreply 15October 22, 2019 8:18 AM

This new annoying co-presenter must be HORRENDOUSLY annoying. Because Fiona Bruce was VERY annoying.

Why in earth do TV shows have these females who stand in front of the camera while brainlessly reading the cue cards?

I’ve been watching a stand alone special, broken up into four parts, about a lost portrait of Bonnie Prince Charlie. It’s hosted by Bendor, who is traveling by motorcycle, and is dressed in leather pants and jacket, throughout. I’ve also found out that he’s married, unfortunately. There is something rather sexy about him, even more so in leather.

^ Yes, I watched that one, too. But for me, the motorcycle seems a bit try-hard. Someone else must've thought so, too. The other episodes do not feature him riding.

by Anonymousreply 18November 3, 2019 8:16 PM

^ All these TV presenters are "try-hard".

I'm sick of archaeologists of presenting their bosoms to me as they gush and gloat over something.

I abhor presenters with twisted necks shouting at the camera while walking quickly away from it.

by Anonymousreply 19November 3, 2019 10:10 PM

I'm all caught up with these shows. What do I watch, now?

Apparently not.

The 2nd Duke of Westminster is the one who had Lord Beauchamp exiled for being gay

Bendover Governor

Was Bender on Futurama inspired by said toff?
