BRIT Awards to abolish Best Female and Male categories after Sam Smith comes out as Non binary

BRIT Awards producers are considering axing of Best Solo Artist - Male and Female categories to accommodate Sam Smith who earlier this year declared that "they" no longer identify as binary. Smith had won Best Solo Artist - Male previously. The bosses are likely to club the two categories together so that artists like Smith can feel included. They have not reached a decision yet. This decision - if made - will see male, female and other artists competing against each other in a single category.

Best Non-Binary Artist? This shit is ridiculous, but most awards are bought and paid for anyway.

by Anonymousreply 1September 25, 2019 12:13 PM

The purpose of separate categories for M and F is to ensure women don't get left out by a male-dominated industry.

A real gender rebel would embrace expressing himself in whatever way was true to him while still IDing as a Male- breaking down gender stereotypes instead of hardening them. Something we knew how to do back in the 70s and 80s.

Thus proving he’s a man.

Lol

I truly hate that this is because of Sam Smith. He acts like a flamboyant gay. He didn’t even have the decency to google the sexuality he is misappropriating. Non binary look non binary, act non binary. They don’t frolic in their speedos, trying to catch butterflies. It certainly isn’t something you “just discovered”.

by Anonymousreply 5September 25, 2019 12:45 PM

This is why we hate them.

by Anonymousreply 6September 25, 2019 12:51 PM

Smith may believe he's "non-binary", but his chromosomes and woefully stupidity betray him for the dumb dick that he is.

by Anonymousreply 7September 25, 2019 12:53 PM

Is British music in such a poor state that Sam is the best it has to offer anyway?

by Anonymousreply 8September 25, 2019 12:54 PM

Best They Artist /solved

by Anonymousreply 9September 25, 2019 12:57 PM

If the British music industry is bending over backwards and contorting itself to accommodate one person, it's in serious, massive trouble.

by Anonymousreply 10September 25, 2019 1:01 PM

That means no more Best Actor/Actress at the Oscars.

Erasure of women not even masked anymore.

Addled Sam Smith and his woman making love handles - a means to an end.

by Anonymousreply 12September 25, 2019 1:19 PM

Sam thinks because he’s gay, he has Card Blanche on all sexuality’s. Sam needs to learn that he’s in a reality that gays pretending to be straight is one thing. Adopting another sexuality for publicity should be cause for fraud, since he’s using it purely for monetary gain .

by Anonymousreply 13September 25, 2019 1:31 PM

"But, but how someone identifies doesn't affect anyone else!" -Obnoxious Trans Allies

r2: Exactly! Actual bravery would be unapologetically indulging in things society arbitrarily says is for the opposite sex and making it clear that it doesn't change your sex or gender.

by Anonymousreply 14September 25, 2019 1:35 PM

Even if you think this it's no big deal if millionaire women lose out at awards shows, please understand that it will not stop here.

Here we go...

by Anonymousreply 16September 25, 2019 2:02 PM

So they are giving out one less award? I don't give a shit about award shows anyway, but it seems crappy that someone else is going to lose out thanks to this whiny fucking asshole. I seriously can't stand him. Or zie. Whatever.

by Anonymousreply 17September 25, 2019 2:18 PM

R15 I just read that article and It is insane! Literally. I don't even know where we are we heading with this fuckery. Women were always treated like second class citizens next to men but now non binary lobbyists have added a whole new dimension to it.

I remember someone made a women's day post and happened to mention uterus in it somehow and a whole fiasco started over it because some MtF's feelings were "hurt"

by Anonymousreply 18September 25, 2019 2:28 PM

Ultrasound for gender reveal should also be banned.

by Anonymousreply 19September 25, 2019 2:31 PM

R2 makes an excellent point. Can't this whole movement happen without romping on women's rights?

R5 I was surprised too when he stated he had 'just discovered' it. You would think a gay celebrity in the West would know about this. Non binary people have been around for ages. This makes me wonder if it's really an act to get attention. I mean for fuck's sake I live in India and I discovered it ages ago.

by Anonymousreply 20September 25, 2019 2:36 PM
Sam thinks because he’s gay, he has Card Blanche

You seriously thought the expression was card Blanche?

It’s “Carte Blanche,” r13.

by Anonymousreply 21September 25, 2019 2:39 PM

R19 Funnily enough USG for gender determination is actually banned in India but for different reasons. Obviously.

by Anonymousreply 22September 25, 2019 2:41 PM

Why can’t they just create a new category for “Best Non-Binary Artist”? Is there some obvious reason I’m not getting? Why take anything away? Just add one.

by Anonymousreply 23September 25, 2019 2:47 PM

I find the distinction between American and "Foreign" films more bizarre than a distinction between (yes, between, not among) genders.

It's inevitable that gender distinctions will disappear but I don't think it'll shake out well for women. Not sure what would work better, though.

by Anonymousreply 24September 25, 2019 2:51 PM

Why not just get rid of the male and female awards. I wasn't aware that one's genitals had any impact on one's musical talent. This isn't like sports where men have a biological advantage.

by Anonymousreply 25September 25, 2019 3:36 PM

Species will be next

by Anonymousreply 26September 25, 2019 3:39 PM

Anyway the BRIT awards have always been a joke.

Anyone who gets the Best Newcomer award fades away never to be heard of again.

Back in the 80s they used to give the Best Female Artist award again and again to either Kate Bush, Annie Lennox or Alison Moyet. One of whom won one year despite not having released anything.

by Anonymousreply 27September 25, 2019 3:44 PM
he has Card Blanche on all sexuality’s.

Oh, [italic]dear[/italic] and oh, [italic]dear.[/italic]

by Anonymousreply 28September 25, 2019 3:57 PM
The purpose of separate categories for M and F is to ensure women don't get left out by a male-dominated industry.

But that's the point, when you create a seperate award, what you are saying is it's the "Lesser" award.

There's no need for any male and female versions, nor should there be a supporting actor vs lead actor. Just one acting award.

by Anonymousreply 29September 25, 2019 4:02 PM

The Brit Awards should be called The Brat Awards after Ms Sam Smith. What a fraud he is. He is a gay man whp is a needy little bottom. How the fuck is non binary. He sucks cock and takes it up his ass and he is cocked. That makes him a gay man period.

by Anonymousreply 30September 25, 2019 4:04 PM

And now he'll never win an award again.

by Anonymousreply 31September 25, 2019 4:06 PM

Can't they give zim zir own special category?

by Anonymousreply 32September 25, 2019 4:16 PM

R32, that’s what I want to know. You’re so fucking special, you get your very own custom category. Created just for YOU, you trailblazer.

But that wouldn’t be disruptive enough, so we have to trample everyone.

by Anonymousreply 33September 25, 2019 4:21 PM

To be fair, OP's title is misleading: they are only CONSIDERING doing this.

Nothing has been said about the Oscars or any other awards, either.

by Anonymousreply 34September 25, 2019 4:24 PM

Boy George and Jimi Somerville need to have a chat with this little gobshite.

The World Is Sick and Getting Sicker.

by Anonymousreply 36September 25, 2019 4:57 PM

R25 The field is dominated by men. Men make a larger part of voting committees that's why separate categories were made in the first place - to give women a fair chance. If they abolish this, more award shows might take this route. Now I know awards don't matter but this will only be the beginning. Think about it - if rich, Influential women can be affected this easily, what about your regular working jane. She won't stand a bloody chance when this happens in workplace.

It has actually started tbh. The other day on Reddit I was reading a post from a woman who got a STEM degree and worked her way up at her job. Since most STEM fields are dominated by men ,she had to work twice as hard to get ahead. Now her bosses prefer to do projects with TIMs instead of actual women who are btw more qualified for the job - just because TIMs are males.

by Anonymousreply 37September 25, 2019 5:13 PM

Ms Smith already owns three Brits.

by Anonymousreply 38September 25, 2019 5:36 PM

Whatever happened to majority rule?

by Anonymousreply 39September 25, 2019 5:43 PM

The Grammys did away with Male and Female categories several years ago.

by Anonymousreply 40September 25, 2019 5:56 PM

MTV Movie and TV awards did away with separate male / female categories two years ago.

by Anonymousreply 41September 25, 2019 7:12 PM

R40 Grammy wanted to cut down the total number of categories. They not only clubbed males and females together, they made a lot of categories disappear entirely - cutting over a dozen of those. The intention was to make it more exclusive and not because they wanted to make everyone feel welcomed!! The move to make it common was widely criticized even then.

Today I learned - MTV TV and movie award exists.

R38 lmao🤣🤣
find the distinction between American and "Foreign" films more bizarre

It’s actually Best Foreign LANGUAGE Film, and what’s bizarre about it?

by Anonymousreply 43September 26, 2019 2:25 AM

Straight woman here, divorced, always worked and continue to....but if I’m still a “frau”, that’s fine.

I just want to thank those who have chimed in here (and other threads) about the impact on girls. I have a boy, as well. I’m learning more here about the “additional alphabet letters” than anywhere else. I think most traditional folks aren’t up to date on this, as it’s not mainstream. And we’re constantly distracted by other shite 😉.

Both of my kids are involved in the arts as well as classic All-American sports (defined by their dad as including a ball.....yuck it up). But it appears neither is safe, immediately for girls.....but what about boys later?

by Anonymousreply 44September 26, 2019 3:06 AM
