Into The Blue was a fun movie. It flopped at the box office but I think it was one of those films that did very well in rental (in the last days of Blockbuster and Video Ezy being a big deal). Most of the marketing was centred around seeing Alba's body, and to be fair her body looked amazing. All those slow-motion snorkelling scenes. Paul Walker was at the PEAK of his beauty. His body, tan, face, and that buzzcut. They made a stunning couple.

It was in a wave of beachy, surfy, summery movies in the early 00s that don't seem to get made as often any more. It started with The Beach (starring Leo), foreign hits like City of God, and Y Tu Mama Tambien. Even the Charlie's Angels sequel had a surfy bikini theme, the famous Halle Berry Bond bikini moment in Die Another Day. The director of Into The Blue had also made Blue Crush (a surprisingly good movie that still holds up today as an indie about a young girl trying to make a living, not just a chick flick).

And they were definitely fucking off screen.

I wouldn't really call Blue Crush an indie. But it still holds up. Although I cringed at the terrible cgi they used on the stunt double pretending to be Kate Bosworth.

What was weird about her decision to make that Into the Blue flick was that during that period, she was always doing interviews/making comments about how she was tired of getting being sexualized and getting roles that focused on her body. She also openly admitted she coveted the kind of roles being offered to Natalie Portman.

R39 well in fairness, Natalie isn't all that strong an actress either. She was just lucky enough to be born with elegant, delicate, "elfen" looks which lend her more credence in dramatic and ingenue roles.

She also does a lot of 'tough chick' roles (probably gets a lot of them ever since Dark Angel) which she's not really convincing in, either. Including her current cop streaming series with her and Gabrielle Union. It has an 8% on Rottentomatoes but was renewed for a second season, and both were nominated for the Teen Choice Award for Choice TV Action Actress (Union won) lol. I think she's a little too short and soft spoken to pull off the true badass latina hood chick characters.

I remember in the movie Honey the role was clearly written for a black actress (I think Aaliyah was originally attached), and some of the ebonics and urban dialogue sounded hilarious coming out of her mouth. They even kept Lonette McKee as Alba's mother even though she's a different race.

I can see why she longed to switch it up and do roles like Portman was doing, more soft and less sexualised characters with artsier directors, going to film festivals and winning critics awards, etc.

Jessica Alba can pass for mixed on some occasions. R42 which Honey, the character, was.
