Lead singer of The Cars and estranged husband of supermodel Paulina Porizkova died today, aged 75.
Oh no! I loved the cars!

Strange, I recall hearing that he'd died several years ago.

He was found dead in the house he's trying to sell...good luck with that!

All the news stories say he was 75, R8.

Just as Olivia moved in when Luise Rainer finally kicked it, we need to start thinking about a successor for the "so young" posts. I nominate Marsha Hunt.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 16, 2019 1:41 AM |
Weird - didn’t he and Paulina recently divorce. Wonder if he was getting into drugs. Paulina is very together - one of the smartest supermodels I’ve heard interviewed.

This is the house he was found dead in and also trying to sell.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 16, 2019 1:44 AM |
Love it, except for the pink bedroom and the drapes. I didn't realise he was that rich.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | September 16, 2019 1:46 AM |
R17, such talk is forbidden.
And Marsha Hunt is not a big name.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | September 16, 2019 1:49 AM |
Ric had beautiful eyes.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | September 16, 2019 1:49 AM |
He was so ugly...even with a model wife, his kids turned out ugly.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 16, 2019 1:51 AM |
R24, not nice.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 16, 2019 1:52 AM |
The original singer of The Cars who also died was gorgeous!
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 16, 2019 1:55 AM |
Prince Philip, R17. I'd nominate Kirk Douglas or Vera Lynn, but I don't think either of them will outlive Olivia by much, if at all.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 16, 2019 1:56 AM |
I think Rhonda Fleming is 95 or so. Can she be the next "So Young" gal?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 16, 2019 1:57 AM |
Eddie Money and now Ric Ocasek, I wonder who's next.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 16, 2019 1:57 AM |
Sounds like it could be drugs perhaps? Hard to say when he was that age. TMZ is reporting that his 'estranged wife' is the one who found him. That has to be Paulina. They have two sons in their very early 20s if memory serves.
Very sad no matter how he died. Loved the Cars debut records, that and the follow up Candy-O are rock classics. Was just talking about these records the other day with a family member, Bye Bye Love was a great tune. "It's an orangy sky, always some other guy" - great lyrics.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 16, 2019 1:58 AM |
I guess the Cars finally ran out of gas.

Not famous enough, I'm afraid. Olivia de Havilland is a legend, and every educated gay man knows of Luise Rainer because she won two major Oscars in a row and then left Hollywood.
i think we'll have to go next for someone else quite famous if they do manage to outlive Olivia: Betty White, Cicely Tyson, or Elizabeth II.

Holy fuck. He lived two blocks up from me between the same cross streets. Never knew. I know that townhouse well. It’s beautiful.

He tried claiming he was born in 1949, even though he graduated from High School in 1963.

R37, maybe he's 33 like I am and graduated high school before he was born!

He had 6 sons, the ones with Paulina are just late teens/early adults.

So strange that two of them went gray while the remaining two flaunted thick, lush, glossy chestnut locks.

I still crack up at the degree to which non-NY/LA DLers try to keep where they live a secret - "I'm in a largish city in a midwestern state" - but NYers will be all like, "I live at 234 West 19th St, Apt 3...3A? 3B? Well, you don't think I'm going to reveal EXACTLY where I live, do you?!"
by Anonymous | reply 57 | September 16, 2019 2:56 AM |
r56 Sammy is alive and kicking. Anyone seen "Diamond David" Lee Roth lately though?
Lindsey Buckingham has been very ill recently, with heart issues. All of these rockers are now getting well north of 65-70, its the age when people start to drop off and pass.

He had a funny cameo (with Pia Zadora) in John Waters' Hairspray

I remember exactly the first time I heard The Cars in the summer of 79. It was the Candy-O album that a friend of mine had bought. I remember thinking that music was finally changing and we could leave all the disco/corporate rock/SoCal shit behind.

I remember that Drive used to be the closing video shown every night at Sidetracks in Chicago.

The townhouse is gorgeous while the decor is hideous. Imagine finding your ex dead, on a floral rug?
I still listen to his music. I love The Cars, & he was allegedly a good guy. RIP.

What a letdown this is. My mom and I both liked The Cars and Ric especially since I was a kid so it's a bit like facing the death of a childhood friend for me. We watched their videos together. Hope he got to talk with all his sons this past week.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | September 16, 2019 3:51 AM |
It's funny how you never heard much of anything about The Cars outside of their music. No "Behind The Music" episode, no internal jealousies or resentments, no drugs or crazy antics with groupies. Everyone knew that Rick was married to Paula, but that was about it.

Well SHIT. I loved their music so much growing up, they were one of the best parts of the late 70s/early 80s for me.
[quote]All of these rockers are now getting well north of 65-70
They’re all in their mid-late 70s actually, and the oldest ones are starting to turn 80, like Bill Wyman of the Stones. Grace Slick turns 80 this year. It’s gonna be a steady stream of these rockers dying off now.

The Cars are always associated with Boston, though Rick and Benjamin were from Cleveland and Elliot was from Brooklyn.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | September 16, 2019 4:50 AM |
r83 many of the rockers associated with Boston are from someplace else, many of them came to go to school and stayed on to start music careers.
Ric, Ben Orr, and Tom Scholz of Boston are all from Ohio but well known as Boston musicians. Tracy Chapman is also from Cleveland (came east to go to Tufts).

The Cars were also a great live band, and though Ric was the brains who wrote all the music, Benjamin Orr was the voice of almost all their best songs. And he was beautiful.

R95 Lots of celebrities have lied about their ages. Public records have both 1944 and 1949 for birth years, but 1944 has to be correct since he graduated from High School in 1963 and got married the first time shortly after that in Ohio.
His High School Year Book photo from 1961. He wasn't bad looking back then.

Who was the beautiful actress in the music video in R10?
I always thought it was so odd that the magnificent Paulina was with the dorky looking Ocasek. I wonder if he was despondent because Paulina was leaving him? When he was in his 40s and she was in her 20s, the age difference might not have been so bad, but does a beauty like Paulina, who is still beautiful in her 50s, want to be, like the Germans in WWI, shackled to a corpse? I think not!
But I can also see how having your beautiful younger partner walk out on you might be the last straw. He looked like an ancient ostrich. What were his chances of getting another partner? Probably nil.

The Cars frontman Ric Ocasek died naturally of heart disease, the city Medical Examiner’s Office said Monday.
The iconic new-wave rock star, 75, was found unconscious inside his Gramercy Park pad around 4:14 p.m. Sunday by his estranged wife, supermodel Paulina Porizkova.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
It’s unclear how long Ocasek, born Otcasek, had been suffering from heart disease. Pulmonary emphysema, a type of lung disease, contributed to his death, the ME’s office said.
The “My Best Friend’s Girl” singer had recently placed the home where he was found on the market after he and Porizkova announced their split in May 2018.
The pair — who shared two sons — had been together for 28 years when they separated. The singer also had four other sons from previous marriages.

The Cars will always remind me of 1984 when I was driving my new sports car with my windsurfer strapped to the roof of my car driving to San Philippe Mx for vacation. I had just gotten into the San Diego area when I heard their new CD on the radio and had to have it. I remember calling ahead to a local store to see if they would pull a copy for me and give me a chance to pick it up, it was already almost 9:00pm, the did. I played that CD all the way to SP and the entire time I was there. What a wonderful vacation. All the giant shrimp I could eat and that CD. 8 months later I was transferred to Chicago and enjoyed that CD over again driving on Lake Shore Drive, even leased an apartment of LSD. Memories

Ric Ocasek’s estranged supermodel wife discovered he had died while bringing him coffee on Sunday — revealing in a statement that The Cars frontman was recovering from recent surgery.
“Ric was at home recuperating well after surgery,” Paulina Porizkova wrote in a statement published on Instagram Monday — calling the rock legend’s death “untimely and unexpected.”
“Our two sons, Jonathan and Oliver, and I were making sure he was comfortable, ordering food and watching TV together.
“I found him still asleep when bringing him his Sunday morning coffee. I touched his cheek to rouse him. It was then I realized that during the night he had peacefully passed on.”
Porizkova thanked fans for their support — sharing a photo of the small floral shrine which sprung up outside his Gramercy Park pad where fans and neighbors paid tribute to the iconic new wave rock star, 75.
“We appreciate the great outpouring of love. We, his family and friends, are completely and utterly devastated,” she wrote. The pair, who had been together for 28 years, announced their split in May 2018.
Neighbors stopped to pay their respects on Monday — with one fan dropping of a picture of The Cars’ 1978 debut album and another leaving behind a vintage toy car.
Locals who knew Ocasek described him as a “very sweet” and “gentle” man who was an unassuming fixture in the neighborhood and always happy to have a chat.
Lisa Chai, 46, stopped by on her way to work to pay her respects and left the toy car for the rock icon, describing his death as “very sad.”
“I was going to go get flowers but I feel like a car was more appropriate!” Chai said. “My son was born here and (Ocasek) would always pass by and say hello. He was so nice, so friendly.”
The “My Best Friend’s Girl” singer died naturally of heart disease, the city Medical Examiner’s Office said Monday.
Local Rebecca Spath grew up listening to Ocasek’s rock band and left behind a pink candle, telling The Post, “I wanted to honor him as a neighbor, as a musician and producer.”
“I left a candle, I didn’t have a car! I was hoping there would be flowers here today, I’m glad he’s being remembered,” she said.
Neighbor Julie Block told The Post she was grief-stricken as a fan of his music and as his neighbor.
“I first spoke to him about seven years ago, and I swear this is true, I was walking down the street and I was listening to The Cars and there he was!” Block said.
“I pulled an earphone out and I said, ‘I’m listening to you right now and you made my workout really happy!’ and he was very friendly,” she said.

I think I've told this before.
I've met them about a dozen times when I used to work in a NY hospital. The first time I met him he was alone in an elevator with me. We had to go up 20 floors. He looked familiar (he in a black leather coat) but I couldn't place him. I asked him, "are you in a band"? He replied that he was. I replied, "oh yes, how are you?". Although I couldn't remember which band he was in. A week later I realized who he was. I continued to see him and Paulina at the hospital over the next few weeks. My office was near the office of whomever they were seeing. He always said hello to me and started joking and asking me each time if I "was in a band". I always replied that I was. We both always laughed
A few year later I met them through friends and they remembered me. They're are/were really lovely people
