by Anonymousreply 269October 7, 2019 4:16 PM

Oh no! I loved the cars!

by Anonymousreply 1September 16, 2019 1:27 AM

Who's gonna drive you home...

...tonight?

by Anonymousreply 2September 16, 2019 1:28 AM

omg I was JUST asking my husband yesterday I wonder what Paulina is up to .

by Anonymousreply 3September 16, 2019 1:29 AM

I love them too :.(

by Anonymousreply 4September 16, 2019 1:29 AM

OMG! Had no idea he was even sick.

Also had no idea he was 75!

by Anonymousreply 5September 16, 2019 1:30 AM

So young.

by Anonymousreply 6September 16, 2019 1:31 AM

"Emotions in Motion".....love that song.

by Anonymousreply 7September 16, 2019 1:31 AM

He wasn't R5. He was 70 years old.

by Anonymousreply 8September 16, 2019 1:33 AM

Strange, I recall hearing that he'd died several years ago.

He was found dead in the house he's trying to sell...good luck with that!

by Anonymousreply 11September 16, 2019 1:39 AM

All the news stories say he was 75, R8.

by Anonymousreply 12September 16, 2019 1:39 AM

[quote]Strange, I recall hearing that he'd died several years ago.

That was Benjamin Orr.

by Anonymousreply 13September 16, 2019 1:40 AM

wiki says he's 70. the report I read also lists his age as 70. and natural causes....how can the tell?

by Anonymousreply 14September 16, 2019 1:40 AM

[quote]Strange, I recall hearing that he'd died several years ago.

No -- just his career.

by Anonymousreply 15September 16, 2019 1:40 AM

what was on his ipod?

by Anonymousreply 16September 16, 2019 1:41 AM

Just as Olivia moved in when Luise Rainer finally kicked it, we need to start thinking about a successor for the "so young" posts. I nominate Marsha Hunt.

by Anonymousreply 17September 16, 2019 1:41 AM

Weird - didn’t he and Paulina recently divorce. Wonder if he was getting into drugs. Paulina is very together - one of the smartest supermodels I’ve heard interviewed.

by Anonymousreply 18September 16, 2019 1:42 AM

This is the house he was found dead in and also trying to sell.

Love it, except for the pink bedroom and the drapes. I didn't realise he was that rich.

by Anonymousreply 20September 16, 2019 1:46 AM

Ben Orr was the hot one.

R17, such talk is forbidden.

And Marsha Hunt is not a big name.

by Anonymousreply 22September 16, 2019 1:49 AM

Ric had beautiful eyes.

by Anonymousreply 23September 16, 2019 1:49 AM

He was so ugly...even with a model wife, his kids turned out ugly.

by Anonymousreply 24September 16, 2019 1:51 AM

R24, not nice.

by Anonymousreply 25September 16, 2019 1:52 AM

The original singer of The Cars who also died was gorgeous!

by Anonymousreply 26September 16, 2019 1:55 AM

Prince Philip, R17. I'd nominate Kirk Douglas or Vera Lynn, but I don't think either of them will outlive Olivia by much, if at all.

by Anonymousreply 27September 16, 2019 1:56 AM

I think Rhonda Fleming is 95 or so. Can she be the next "So Young" gal?

by Anonymousreply 28September 16, 2019 1:57 AM

Eddie Money and now Ric Ocasek, I wonder who's next.

by Anonymousreply 29September 16, 2019 1:57 AM

Sounds like it could be drugs perhaps? Hard to say when he was that age. TMZ is reporting that his 'estranged wife' is the one who found him. That has to be Paulina. They have two sons in their very early 20s if memory serves.

Very sad no matter how he died. Loved the Cars debut records, that and the follow up Candy-O are rock classics. Was just talking about these records the other day with a family member, Bye Bye Love was a great tune. "It's an orangy sky, always some other guy" - great lyrics.

by Anonymousreply 30September 16, 2019 1:58 AM

I guess the Cars finally ran out of gas.

by Anonymousreply 31September 16, 2019 2:00 AM

RIP Ric - turn it up:

Not famous enough, I'm afraid. Olivia de Havilland is a legend, and every educated gay man knows of Luise Rainer because she won two major Oscars in a row and then left Hollywood.

i think we'll have to go next for someone else quite famous if they do manage to outlive Olivia: Betty White, Cicely Tyson, or Elizabeth II.

by Anonymousreply 33September 16, 2019 2:01 AM

Holy fuck. He lived two blocks up from me between the same cross streets. Never knew. I know that townhouse well. It’s beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 34September 16, 2019 2:01 AM

No! I just an hour ago was thinking about him playing the zonked out beatnik in Hairspray.

by Anonymousreply 35September 16, 2019 2:03 AM

He was not wicked beauty.

by Anonymousreply 36September 16, 2019 2:04 AM

He tried claiming he was born in 1949, even though he graduated from High School in 1963.

by Anonymousreply 37September 16, 2019 2:05 AM

R37, maybe he's 33 like I am and graduated high school before he was born!

by Anonymousreply 38September 16, 2019 2:07 AM

He had the most pronounced Adam's Apple I have ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 39September 16, 2019 2:13 AM

I loved The Cars, although they were one of the few New Wave bands that had no gay sensibility whatsoever.

by Anonymousreply 40September 16, 2019 2:16 AM

He dropped dead reading the "Gen X Eldergays: Tell Us About New Wave" thread.

by Anonymousreply 41September 16, 2019 2:21 AM

r7 is confusing The Cars with Billy Squier. Distinctly separate Boston rock acts.

by Anonymousreply 42September 16, 2019 2:25 AM

[quote]Just as Olivia moved in when Luise Rainer finally kicked it, we need to start thinking about a successor for the "so young" posts. I nominate Marsha Hunt.

How about Hugh Downs? He's 98.

by Anonymousreply 43September 16, 2019 2:26 AM

[quote]Eddie Money and now Ric Ocasek, I wonder who's next.

Dee Snider will be next.

by Anonymousreply 44September 16, 2019 2:27 AM

Dammit, 2019 is bleeding me and leaving me nothing with tears. Kleenex and Scott companies already compete for my facial tissue patronage.

by Anonymousreply 45September 16, 2019 2:28 AM

He had quite a career as a producer after The Cars.

He had 6 sons, the ones with Paulina are just late teens/early adults.

Heart attack maybe?

I really like Paulina P too. She has a great essay on beauty and aging which is a topic dear to our hearts, but not addressed as often as it should be.

Crap. RIP. Feeling really, really old right now. Bye bye love.

by Anonymousreply 56September 16, 2019 2:56 AM

[quote]Holy fuck. He lived two blocks up from me between the same cross streets. Never knew. I know that townhouse well. It’s beautiful.

I still crack up at the degree to which non-NY/LA DLers try to keep where they live a secret - "I'm in a largish city in a midwestern state" - but NYers will be all like, "I live at 234 West 19th St, Apt 3...3A? 3B? Well, you don't think I'm going to reveal EXACTLY where I live, do you?!"

by Anonymousreply 57September 16, 2019 2:56 AM

r56 Sammy is alive and kicking. Anyone seen "Diamond David" Lee Roth lately though?

Lindsey Buckingham has been very ill recently, with heart issues. All of these rockers are now getting well north of 65-70, its the age when people start to drop off and pass.

The Cars were the first rock band I ever liked on my own. I was young when Let’s Go came out and I loved it.

I thought it, as the kids say, slapped.

by Anonymousreply 62September 16, 2019 3:09 AM

your mouth to God's ear, r53

by Anonymousreply 63September 16, 2019 3:12 AM

Another vote for feeling really old tonight. The Cars were great, lots of memories of their music. Jesus, where did the time go?

I remember exactly the first time I heard The Cars in the summer of 79. It was the Candy-O album that a friend of mine had bought. I remember thinking that music was finally changing and we could leave all the disco/corporate rock/SoCal shit behind.

by Anonymousreply 68September 16, 2019 3:23 AM

I remember that Drive used to be the closing video shown every night at Sidetracks in Chicago.

by Anonymousreply 69September 16, 2019 3:24 AM

The townhouse is gorgeous while the decor is hideous. Imagine finding your ex dead, on a floral rug?

I still listen to his music. I love The Cars, & he was allegedly a good guy. RIP.

by Anonymousreply 70September 16, 2019 3:30 AM

What a letdown this is. My mom and I both liked The Cars and Ric especially since I was a kid so it's a bit like facing the death of a childhood friend for me. We watched their videos together. Hope he got to talk with all his sons this past week.

by Anonymousreply 71September 16, 2019 3:51 AM

It's funny how you never heard much of anything about The Cars outside of their music. No "Behind The Music" episode, no internal jealousies or resentments, no drugs or crazy antics with groupies. Everyone knew that Rick was married to Paula, but that was about it.

by Anonymousreply 72September 16, 2019 3:55 AM

Well, maybe he died from heart attack...too much dick pills, who knows?

I mean, how can they just say natural causes straight away?

by Anonymousreply 73September 16, 2019 3:59 AM

Shitty news. RIP Mr. Ocasek.

by Anonymousreply 74September 16, 2019 4:00 AM

[quote]...too much dick pills

Where can I get some of these too much dick pills?

by Anonymousreply 75September 16, 2019 4:21 AM

Well SHIT. I loved their music so much growing up, they were one of the best parts of the late 70s/early 80s for me.

[quote]All of these rockers are now getting well north of 65-70

They’re all in their mid-late 70s actually, and the oldest ones are starting to turn 80, like Bill Wyman of the Stones. Grace Slick turns 80 this year. It’s gonna be a steady stream of these rockers dying off now.

by Anonymousreply 76September 16, 2019 4:24 AM

I loved his music. Did he ever eat?

by Anonymousreply 77September 16, 2019 4:27 AM

R5

I had no idea he was still alive.

by Anonymousreply 78September 16, 2019 4:29 AM

He was found unresponsive and unconscious in his bed at 4pm by his ex.

At least he didn't suffer...not a bad way to go.

by Anonymousreply 79September 16, 2019 4:30 AM

Wasn't Drive sung by Orr?

by Anonymousreply 82September 16, 2019 4:48 AM

The Cars are always associated with Boston, though Rick and Benjamin were from Cleveland and Elliot was from Brooklyn.

by Anonymousreply 83September 16, 2019 4:50 AM

r83 many of the rockers associated with Boston are from someplace else, many of them came to go to school and stayed on to start music careers.

Ric, Ben Orr, and Tom Scholz of Boston are all from Ohio but well known as Boston musicians. Tracy Chapman is also from Cleveland (came east to go to Tufts).

by Anonymousreply 84September 16, 2019 4:54 AM

Read the thread, r82.

No he isn't. Emotion in Motion was also a single by Ric Ocasek on his 2nd solo album.

by Anonymousreply 91September 16, 2019 5:17 AM

Susan Dey thinks her band was better.

by Anonymousreply 92September 16, 2019 5:23 AM

R92 Susan Dey must be hitting the bottle again... just sayin’

by Anonymousreply 93September 16, 2019 5:37 AM

If you're living in Manhattan, you're probably living in a space where someone died.

by Anonymousreply 94September 16, 2019 5:42 AM

Even the NYT lists him as 75.

what's the point of lying about his age? It's not like he's an actor lol

by Anonymousreply 95September 16, 2019 6:21 AM

The Cars were also a great live band, and though Ric was the brains who wrote all the music, Benjamin Orr was the voice of almost all their best songs. And he was beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 96September 16, 2019 6:37 AM

Does age matter clearly he has died? I’m sure his real age will be revealed soon.

by Anonymousreply 97September 16, 2019 6:40 AM

More will come out about his death. It always does

by Anonymousreply 98September 16, 2019 6:54 AM

R95 Lots of celebrities have lied about their ages. Public records have both 1944 and 1949 for birth years, but 1944 has to be correct since he graduated from High School in 1963 and got married the first time shortly after that in Ohio.

R103 That's what I'm wondering, considering the circumstances. Why was Paulina there on Sunday afternoon when they've been separated for a couple of years? I hope that's not what it was, but I have a bad feeling.

R.I.P. I remember dancing to “Shake It Up” at the Dublin Pub on Long Island while doing 25 cent Alabama Slammer shots.

by Anonymousreply 108September 16, 2019 1:10 PM

Susan Dey says she doesn’t have eddy money to come to Ric’s funeral in NY!

by Anonymousreply 109September 16, 2019 1:14 PM

He produced music for Suicide Squad. Billy Idol refers to liking that music, not his manner of death.

I assume he had plans with someone and when he did not show and could not be reached, she went round to check on him.

Reports keep saying an apartment, was there a separate suite in the town house?

by Anonymousreply 110September 16, 2019 1:18 PM

I think this sounds like suicide. Why would he be lying in his bed at 4 PM and what led Paulina to go over there...

by Anonymousreply 111September 16, 2019 1:25 PM

He was 75, Pats.

by Anonymousreply 114September 16, 2019 1:33 PM

by Anonymousreply 115September 16, 2019 1:39 PM

by Anonymousreply 126September 16, 2019 3:53 PM

Who was the beautiful actress in the music video in R10?

I always thought it was so odd that the magnificent Paulina was with the dorky looking Ocasek. I wonder if he was despondent because Paulina was leaving him? When he was in his 40s and she was in her 20s, the age difference might not have been so bad, but does a beauty like Paulina, who is still beautiful in her 50s, want to be, like the Germans in WWI, shackled to a corpse? I think not!

But I can also see how having your beautiful younger partner walk out on you might be the last straw. He looked like an ancient ostrich. What were his chances of getting another partner? Probably nil.

by Anonymousreply 127September 16, 2019 4:01 PM

R111 Ric was lying in bed because he was 75.

by Anonymousreply 128September 16, 2019 4:05 PM

I don't Paulina registered to him as much younger once she passed 35.

by Anonymousreply 129September 16, 2019 4:06 PM

R126: the Cars are a staple of classic rock radio and 70s and 80s oldies. You don't listen to or know anything about that. This may come as an enormous shock to you but the world doesn't revolve around you. Don't hurt yourself when you throw a temper tantrum.

by Anonymousreply 130September 16, 2019 4:08 PM

RIP, Ric.

I thought he left Paulina for a younger woman, for some reason. I imagine she was pragmatic about the split and kept a cordial relationship with him for the sake of her kids. Even if the kids are adults, they’ll appreciate having parents who get along.

The Cars frontman Ric Ocasek died naturally of heart disease, the city Medical Examiner’s Office said Monday.

The iconic new-wave rock star, 75, was found unconscious inside his Gramercy Park pad around 4:14 p.m. Sunday by his estranged wife, supermodel Paulina Porizkova.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It’s unclear how long Ocasek, born Otcasek, had been suffering from heart disease. Pulmonary emphysema, a type of lung disease, contributed to his death, the ME’s office said.

The “My Best Friend’s Girl” singer had recently placed the home where he was found on the market after he and Porizkova announced their split in May 2018.

The pair — who shared two sons — had been together for 28 years when they separated. The singer also had four other sons from previous marriages.

The Cars will always remind me of 1984 when I was driving my new sports car with my windsurfer strapped to the roof of my car driving to San Philippe Mx for vacation. I had just gotten into the San Diego area when I heard their new CD on the radio and had to have it. I remember calling ahead to a local store to see if they would pull a copy for me and give me a chance to pick it up, it was already almost 9:00pm, the did. I played that CD all the way to SP and the entire time I was there. What a wonderful vacation. All the giant shrimp I could eat and that CD. 8 months later I was transferred to Chicago and enjoyed that CD over again driving on Lake Shore Drive, even leased an apartment of LSD. Memories

by Anonymousreply 169September 16, 2019 10:30 PM

Ric Ocasek’s estranged supermodel wife discovered he had died while bringing him coffee on Sunday — revealing in a statement that The Cars frontman was recovering from recent surgery.

“Ric was at home recuperating well after surgery,” Paulina Porizkova wrote in a statement published on Instagram Monday — calling the rock legend’s death “untimely and unexpected.”

“Our two sons, Jonathan and Oliver, and I were making sure he was comfortable, ordering food and watching TV together.

“I found him still asleep when bringing him his Sunday morning coffee. I touched his cheek to rouse him. It was then I realized that during the night he had peacefully passed on.”

Porizkova thanked fans for their support — sharing a photo of the small floral shrine which sprung up outside his Gramercy Park pad where fans and neighbors paid tribute to the iconic new wave rock star, 75.

“We appreciate the great outpouring of love. We, his family and friends, are completely and utterly devastated,” she wrote. The pair, who had been together for 28 years, announced their split in May 2018.

Neighbors stopped to pay their respects on Monday — with one fan dropping of a picture of The Cars’ 1978 debut album and another leaving behind a vintage toy car.

Locals who knew Ocasek described him as a “very sweet” and “gentle” man who was an unassuming fixture in the neighborhood and always happy to have a chat.

Lisa Chai, 46, stopped by on her way to work to pay her respects and left the toy car for the rock icon, describing his death as “very sad.”

“I was going to go get flowers but I feel like a car was more appropriate!” Chai said. “My son was born here and (Ocasek) would always pass by and say hello. He was so nice, so friendly.”

The “My Best Friend’s Girl” singer died naturally of heart disease, the city Medical Examiner’s Office said Monday.

Local Rebecca Spath grew up listening to Ocasek’s rock band and left behind a pink candle, telling The Post, “I wanted to honor him as a neighbor, as a musician and producer.”

“I left a candle, I didn’t have a car! I was hoping there would be flowers here today, I’m glad he’s being remembered,” she said.

Neighbor Julie Block told The Post she was grief-stricken as a fan of his music and as his neighbor.

“I first spoke to him about seven years ago, and I swear this is true, I was walking down the street and I was listening to The Cars and there he was!” Block said.

“I pulled an earphone out and I said, ‘I’m listening to you right now and you made my workout really happy!’ and he was very friendly,” she said.

Paulina Porizkova always seemed the most bearable and grounded of the supermodels. She had a humor about herself and the industry, and though she ended up with a rock star, it was for nearly three decades, and it didn’t seem to be for looks, something that the simple and shallow r180 cannot grasp, though, to his credit, he’s trying earnestly to express his garbled thought patterns in poorly written sarcasm.

Sounds like they were all still living in the house?

Presumably he had a will, but as his still legal spouse, I assume she gets the bulk of his assets. There are 6 sons all together. He admitted that he had been an absent father to the older kids and that one was an addict. She really sounds like a lovely person, shame he did not appreciate that.

I think I've told this before.

I've met them about a dozen times when I used to work in a NY hospital. The first time I met him he was alone in an elevator with me. We had to go up 20 floors. He looked familiar (he in a black leather coat) but I couldn't place him. I asked him, "are you in a band"? He replied that he was. I replied, "oh yes, how are you?". Although I couldn't remember which band he was in. A week later I realized who he was. I continued to see him and Paulina at the hospital over the next few weeks. My office was near the office of whomever they were seeing. He always said hello to me and started joking and asking me each time if I "was in a band". I always replied that I was. We both always laughed

A few year later I met them through friends and they remembered me. They're are/were really lovely people

R249, a Benjamin Orr biography came out in the past year or so. It was a nice read, but very amateurish and definitely uneventful, as the writer wanted to be respectful. Ric's bio would probably be interesting, but I doubt there would be any market for it.
