Richard E. Grant- fabulous character actor

I scanned for threads about him but only found one about his fake Oscar statue. He's wonderful! I loved him in Gosford Park, Downton Abbey, Withnail and I, and of course, Can You Ever Forgive Me? He has also played Dr. Who and apparently, exposed a big scam for a false cure for AIDS back in 2006 (according to his Wikipedia page).

He has created his own perfume too. He's had an interesting life, it seems.

Any other fans out there? I think he's so handsome.

I always think he overacts.

I've enjoyed him in a number of movies over the years but R1 is correct. He overacts and his social media is insufferable. He's very "extra". Is he on drugs or medication?

I still think Rupert Everett would have been a better choice for Can You Ever Forgive Me? Of course, god forbid a gay man play a gay man in a movie. Gotta hire the straight guy instead.

I enjoy his film work and his published journal as well. Besides the ones mentioned above, remember him in LA Story? He made the joke about the Guggenheim.

Yes, he's my type too OP. I cant remember what films I have seen him in, but he presented some documentary series and looked very nice doing it

Let's not forget "Posh Nosh", a little known gem of a parody of those cooking shows. I adore him and think he's hilarious.

Apparently Dame Maggie Smith calls him Richard E. Can't (act, that is).

I recall a DL poster a year ago saying he saw Richard in line at a drug store pharmacy acting somewhat agitated.

I enjoyed his book. I remember laughing out loud on the train reading the entries about filming Hudson Hawk with Sandra Bernhard.

He had a show some years ago where he visited luxury hotels. It was really good but that’s where his career was. Now he’s had a big comeback with “Can You”, the nomination, he’s in the next Star Wars. Good for him.

He claims to be teetotal. He has an alcoholic father who almost killed him during an alcohol fuelled rage when he was a teenager. His mother fucked another man in front of him when he was a child too. Raised in Swaziland. Interesting life.

He directed an excellent autobiographical film based on his own childhood, "Wah Wah" (2005). It's a dysfunctional family story set, and shot in, in Swaziland; his direction reminds me a bit of Neil Jordan's in "The Butcher Boy" or "Breakfast on Pluto". Miranda Richardson is very good as the mom; not everything clicks, but there's a great scene where Richardson is shut out of the house by her husband, while the tormented teenage son listens to her screaming and banging on the window.

But ... but ... he's blindingly ugly.

He refers to himself as having “tombstone face” Lol There’s something attractive about him even if he’s not conventionally handsome. He’d be a great dinner party guest. I always refommmend his diaries to anyone who wants to know what it’s like to blow up and become famous. The travel, the long and boring days on set, the difficulties of maintaining a marriage. It’s all there plus a bit of life as an unemployed actor before he did “Whitnail and I”.

He doesn’t come out and say it in the book but I suspect and assume that he comes from money. Even as an out of work actor he didn’t seem to have a day job and he was living in London with a wife and a baby. His wife is in the industry so she wasn’t bringing in a steady income either so there was money somewhere.

How to get ahead in Advertising. Insane funny movie.

Over the years I've several times recommended Posh Nosh here to people who "get" dry British humor. It contains loads of casual hilarious throwaway lines easy to miss if you aren't paying attention.

Also bother in law to Niles Crane.
