He was by all accounts a very nice man and his death was tragic.
I ***am*** surprised that this special is happening NOW. I assume either someone has a book coming out or something like that.

I always hated Hartman. Smug and annoyingly repellent.

Why on earth is this being dragged out, after all these years? Let the man rest in peace.

by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 20, 2019 1:55 AM |
On behalf of R3, R6, R7, and R8, I have alerted the network and they are pulling the show.

What is the point of interviewing her brother?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 20, 2019 3:20 AM |
The brother sued Pfizer, the manufacturer of Zoloft, and settled for $100K.
Like the Zoloft was to blame.

Beautiful kids. This was such a sad story. RIP Phil.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | September 20, 2019 9:55 AM |
I remember some interviews with women he was previously involved with and they made it sound like he really enjoyed the power of keeping things stirred up in high drama mode but at the same time maintaining this nice guy "I'm your victim" sort of passive aggressive stuff. Some male friends acknowledged it as well. So he was a crazy maker who played with the wrong person.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 20, 2019 10:54 AM |
r24 sounds like he liked gaslighting

by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 20, 2019 11:58 AM |
I am amazed the family won anything in that suit against Zoloft. Brynn had a history of disturbing behavior, alcoholism, drugging, etc.
The threatening letter she wrote to Phil’s ex-wife after the ex sent them a congratulatory card on their new baby should’ve been Phil’s first clue to GTFO.
But Zoloft! Yeah, right.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 20, 2019 12:37 PM |
Sounds like he and the wife were both assholes but she was a violent asshole.
What set the crazy bitch off, was he going to divorce her? Or, just too much coke?

He's right at the top of my list of unfunny funny men. Surpassed only by the "comic genius" of Will Ferrell and Robin Williams.

by Anonymous | reply 34 | September 20, 2019 5:22 PM |
I didn't see the whole thing but he sounds like he would fall fast for women, then gradually shut himself off emotionally. Maybe he bored easily. Brynn however was batshit crazy and I think very resentful of the fact he was famous and his fame wasn't getting her fame. The interview with the director talking about how she got a bit part and kept turning towards the camera despite instructions not to was revealing and the threatening nasty letter to the ex-wife was a huge red flag.

by Anonymous | reply 42 | September 20, 2019 9:27 PM |
Did the brother really get $100,000 from sueing Zoloft? If you can sue drug companies for the criminal actions of people who have taken it I should think that all drug companies would be bankrupt by now.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | September 20, 2019 9:31 PM |
Zoloft probably settled. Case was too high profile. Bad publicity.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | September 20, 2019 9:35 PM |
I watched it, and I got the sense that it wasn't a marriage about love, he got arm candy, she'd get a chance at an acting career (which didn't work out). They both loved their kids, but I don't think he was suited for marriage, always wanting to go off boating or flying his plane, it seems like he needed a lot of time alone.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | September 21, 2019 1:07 AM |
Zoloft settles out of court and admitted no wrong doing.
Blaming Zoloft was ridiculous. She was mixing it with alcohol and cocaine and was beating Phil us for years. She was a sociopath with borderline personality disorder.

Zoloft is an odd drug... works for many if they don't drink. Drinking with Zoloft creates very scary behaviour, I can only cocaine would make one even crazier. She mentioned to several people, including her shrink it made her feel like a zombie. She said she often felt numb and not present, or confused. This was mentioned in the documentary. The shrink never attempted to switch her to another SSRI or different antidepressant... just told her to break the tablet in half. It doesn't sound like she got good care.
I have seen people develop OCD and Agoraphobia whilst taking Zoloft. These symptoms ceased when they went off Zoloft. I also knew a woman who drank five or six glasses of wine every night on it, and previous to Zoloft she could handle drink. The drug made her as mad as a hatter. Thankfully there are better drugs now. Paxil and Zoloft aren't for everyone, and they were giving them out like candy back then. I don't think these two are offered as first line drugs any longer.

Well R59, you can argue/question me if you want....but I grew up on Encino Ave, three doors north of 5065. That house was designed by Robert Byrd (after the 2 acre lot was subdivided in 1979).

by Anonymous | reply 62 | September 21, 2019 10:59 AM |
R55- The GIF, the comment, LOL Perfection.... She TOTALLY would have ended up on RHOBH..
I watched this documentary and thought it was excellent.
Brynn was a FRIGHTENING pathologically insecure LUNATIC. This woman scared me. I had no idea she was that unhinged
Phil was definitely enigmatic. A gaslighter? I tend to agree- he apparently had that low grade sociopathic streak I have seen in both men and women. His trigger seemed to be women.
And someone nailed it above- It was a pretty shallow marriage- he picked the knockout who even once he tired of, was at least pretty to look at. And she was a FAMEWHORE who thought he would help her career. Did the love each other? To a point. And that's the problem.
They clearly loved their kids, and I believe that she was a good mother. But fuck, people like her scare me.

R33 I agree, not a "comic genius" to me. I just don't laugh at that SNL kind of humor. However, for sure a talented album cover artist. I remember those America and Poco covers well.
Seemed like a nice guy as far as showbiz goes, and the doc went out of its way to emphasize he and Brynn were loving parents. Funny, so many photos show him with that fake, forced smile. You always have to figure comedy guys are masking some issues. The photos were he looks solemn seemed more authentic.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | September 21, 2019 5:32 PM |

[quote]How did Lovitz manage to work with Dick on News Radio for a season with such acrimony? That must have been one awkward set.
I vaguely recall reading somewhere that it was tense and awkward especially since Dick took credit for getting Brynn to use cocaine again and was nasty to Lovitz about the murder of Phil.
Dick was pals with David Stickland the actor from Suddenly Susan who committed suicide after being a drug binge with Dick and other pals. The rumor was that Strickland's costars have all hated Dick since then.
I also remembering watching episodes of that season Dick of that Celebrity Rehab show with Dr. Drew. In one episode, Mo Collins from MadTV confronted Dick about drama he caused in her life. I can't remember what it was about.

At the 5:50 mark in this clip you can see the house.
The way it’s integrated into the landscape and some of the use of windows (in addition to the old, countrified exterior vibe) resembles the design of the Tate house to a degree.

Camille Grammer also thought Kelsey could somehow magically hand her a career. He gave her a guest shot on Frasier but she's kind of weird looking and has zero charisma or talent. You can fuck your way onto a film or TV set, but to actually build a career the audience has to like you, and you can't fuck *all* of them to make that happen.

R62 Andy Dick was involved in Phil Hartman's death.
"Lovitz and Dick have been at loggerheads since a 1997 Christmas party at Hartman’s house, five months before his troubled wife Brynn flipped out, fatally shooting Hartman, then killing herself. 'Andy was doing cocaine, and he gave Brynn some after she had been sober for 10 years. Phil was furious about it - and then five months later he’s dead,' said Lovitz, adding that when he filled in on Hartman’s 'Newsradio' sitcom, 'I told Andy, ‘I wouldn’t be here now if you hadn’t given Brynn that cocaine.’ "

I watched this. Unfortunately, I love Phil, but I feel they both suffered from undiagnosed mental illnesses. I think Phil’s passive aggressive silent self, escalated Brynn’s mental illness as a result she chose to mask the pain with Cocaine and alcohol. Do I feel Zoloft exasperated the problem, no. Although, drinking and Cocaine was the real culprit - add Zoloft and everything becomes FUCKED up.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | September 22, 2019 11:12 PM |
R97 I read somewhere the Phil Hartman could completely ignore his wife Brynn for weeks at a time. They are living in the same house and he could go for weeks pretending she didn't exist.
Hartman was quoted in interviews talking about how he drove all of his wives crazy by retreating into his "cave".
This is an ultimate example of passive/aggressive emotional abuse and it sounds like classic narcissistic abuse.
Hartman may very well have had Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
This was Hartman's third marriage - so she wasn't the only one with issues - and if she wasn't blonde and beautiful Hartman would not have had anything to with her.

Maybe not a comic genius but a genius impersonator. I just watched the doc last night and his impersonation of Pres. Clinton helped his rise substantially. At the time I really did like him and I especially liked his Talk Radio character. Andy certainly likes to live up to his name and as an addict of course he had to know what he was doing when he gave her cocaine. In the piece, he is super nonchalant about it. He leans into the idea since there was six months between the time he shared cocaine with her and the night she shot Phil, there was no connection. Sure she's responsible for actually taking it, but why would you do that to someone you know has drug issues. Unless of course misery loves company and given Andy's struggles...
From the special I didn't get that Phil has mental illness. A kind of easily bored asshole, sure who instead of getting a divorce stayed. Maybe the kids were a factor.
I had no idea he designed album covers prior to comedy/acting. The timing of the documentary does seem odd, but I enjoyed seeing it presented as a cohesive narrative because at the time it seemed so out of the blue. Also it's a prime example of the importance of red flag laws. Mental illness, drug addiction and two guns in the house with young children.

For R85:
PHIL HARTMAN HOME IS FOR SALE
The Encino home of the late Phil Hartman has been listed at $1.65 million. The comedian, fatally shot in his sleep by his wife on May 28, had owned the home since 1988, sources said.
Built in 1980, the house, where Hartman's wife committed suicide after taking his life, has five bedrooms in a bit more than 4,000 square feet. It is behind gates on half an acre.
The home has several levels, including a loft, many built-ins and custom wood cabinets. It also has three wet bars and three fireplaces, with handcrafted mantels.
The house looks like a Swiss chalet, sources say. It was designed by architect Robert Byrd, known for his Hansel-and-Gretel knotty-pine designs. Byrd also extensively used brick, rock and flagstone in the Hartman house.
The home is being sold by the Hartmans' estate. The former Saturday Night Live star, who was most recently a regular on the sitcom NewsRadio and did a voice in the movie Small Soldiers, and his wife of 10 years are survived by two children, son Sean, 9, and daughter Birgen, 6. The comedian was 49; his wife was 40.

I watched the full documentary on ABC’s website yesterday and it was really interesting. He sounded like he had serious issues himself when they talked about how he treated his first two wives. I was surprised the second wife was still willing to be friendly with him after they divorced.
I also thought it was funny when his male friend said that Phil’s wife had them followed when they would go boating together because she was suspicious that Phil and the male friend might be gay and having an affair.😄

One of those guys who would've been better off never marrying and just having a string of girlfriends. He was too solitary and aloof to be in a marriage.

Was she an escort? Her friends seem to hint at that between 11:00 and 13:15 in the E True Hollywood Story episode. I also think it's weird that if she was a model there are no photos.

She used to date Rob Reiner
by Anonymous | reply 120 | September 26, 2019 9:34 AM |
R118 Yes absolutely. I think he fell for the bullshit idea that a successful man must have a beautiful wife and 2.5 kids by his side to make everything complete. R120 They mentioned in the documentary that this was sort of a plus in Hartman's eyes, that it gave her a sort of Hollywood pedigree or something. I think Rob Reiner gave her a very tiny part in one of his movies after they broke up but she was never going to make it as an actress.
One thing that I was curious about was her life before she met Phil. That type of crazy doesn't generally spring out of nowhere. No matter how much people try to blame Andy Dick, I will never buy that he was responsible for this. I think Dick behaves like such a disordered freak that it makes him an easy target to pin this on, but when you think about it blaming him makes no sense . This was a Hollywood party of course there were drugs. I'm sure he gave coke to countless other Hollywood wives who managed not to go off the deep end. If Brynn didn't get coke from him she just would have asked someone else at the party.

He got her a spot during the opening credits of SNL, she's the woman with him.
She was like other women who were the prettiest in their high school class and thought they'd easily make in Hollywood only to realize their are thousands of other prettiest girls there too.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | September 26, 2019 3:25 PM |
Streaming it now. He seemed really shallow and materialistic. The women in his life were mere objects to him. The ones he married were like shiny toys he eventually got tired of. Eventually he dissed the wrong one. Kinda got what was coming.

She did appear to have that height, big hair, slim sexy body, quiet foxy demeanor and OOMPH factor. You see women like her at celebrity restaurants in LA, a real va-va-voom presence when they enter the room. The type famous guys want on their arm.

^^^ R124 here, wanted to add, the classic example of this that I once witnessed was back in the 80s, when Joe Piscopo entered (of all places) Mel's Drive-In in Hollywood one night when I was there. He had his former babysitter-turned-girlfriend on his arm, and WOW what a smokeshow she was in her tight minidress.

Perfectly fair and logical assessment R121. I really believe it was the synergistic effect of booze+Paxil=mad as a fucking hatter, and doubt cocaine turns a sane person into a pyscho killer.

R71 What may I ask is your medical degree? I'm not alleging that this drug induces these symptoms as a prima facie cause, creating the diseases, as anecdotal cases do not always support a cause and effect relationship. There remains however, a relationship nonetheless, which we refer to as an association in the medical literature. Both are real seperate conditions, however traits or hallmarks of these two can most definitely present as adverse effects with this drug. Your incredulity, and opinion to the contrary does not, and cannot discount the events described in the literature. Furthermore, your opinion is meaningless in the presence of the symptoms displayed by the two individuals I know.
Many psychoactive drugs can have similar effects. Likewise, many SSRIs cause some patients to experience suicidal ideation, and result in suicide. It is always hard to say what came first in many of these cases. Many Psychiatrists believe there may underlie a pre-existing condition, or propensity to develop these and the drug in question acts as a catalyst to bring it about. The same theory has been held in high esteem with Schizophrenia and recreational drug use. Does LSD or THC cause Schizophrenia? No, not entirely, however it may very well elicit it in those with a given genetic predisposition to Schizophrenia. Paxil is known to elicit OCD tendencies in some patients as well.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | September 26, 2019 8:36 PM |
Everyone knows Zoloft and Paxil fuck people up worse than they were before.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | September 26, 2019 9:45 PM |
R128 Yes, and many don't need to hold a medical degree to realise it! Most who begin SSRIs do not comply with the meds because they either cannot tolerate the side-effects, or they simply refuse to. This is not well known BTW, outside the field. Most are not given serious thought when they complain either, as Brynn wasn't afforded a different option, but to cut the tablets in half. I don't hold a medical degree, but do have an undergraduate degree in Psychology, and have done some medical writing in my long years. I grew up reading the journals, and still do, as my father was a shrink.

I found it strange the SNL writer (forgot her name) found it perfectly normal for Brynn to be snorting cocaine in the bathroom. The writer said, ‘I didn’t think it was strange walking into the bathroom and seeing Brynn do lines of cocaine. I mean it is SNL.’
Yowza.

You're allowed to believe any old thing you want. I'm a pharmacist. You don't have the teeny, tiniest idea of how many people are on SSRI's (paxil, prozac, zolfot, lexapro et al) . Tens and tens and tens of million people are on them. I'd bet a cool $1 million that half of them have drank alcohol while on them. Believing your "synergistic theory of bullshit", most on the country would be dead by now

That scene was supposedly a real bitch to shoot because Brynn kept ignoring direction and tried to get her face in view of the camera. The crew hated her.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | September 29, 2019 2:21 AM |
R134 Zoloft is not like the others. Until you keep company with someone drinking to excess and snorting boatloads of cocaine, your opinion isn't relevant. I'm sure the studies on Zoloft didn't include a drinking and snorting control group. She exhibited side effects from the beginning. You may prescribe many SSRIs, but that wouldn't necessarily make you an expert witness for the pharmaceutical companies. Zoloft as well as Paxil can create anxiety, hyperactivity, and a dissociative characteristics. This is why so many patients on them are also prescribed tranquilisers or mood stabilisers in conjunction.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | September 29, 2019 2:34 AM |
Furthermore R134 I certainly do hope you are not encouraging your clients in thinking it is good practise to drink with Sertraline. You can google side effects with the combination of alcohol and Zoloft. More than any other, people experience severe agitation, violent tendencies, blackout, and suicidal ideation. Seratonin syndrome is quite common with mixing Sertraline and drink. Mixing other drugs along with alcohol, which increase Seratonin, and you're really taking chances. Most of the literature and most doctors say the verdict is still out on whether it is safe to even drink moderately on Sertraline.

The shot of Phil in the SNL opening credits shows the back of Brynn (she renamed herself that) and her earring swinging because they'd told her for 10th time to turn around. I wonder how their kids are doing. They moved in with her parents to Eau Claire Wisconsin which was also home to one of Manson's kids who was also sent to live with grandparents.

Uh...
Brynn was homely as fuck and looked like a tranny (seriously, Photoshop blue eyes, red lipstick and a blonde wig on Howard Stern and marvel at the resemblance). It's incredible how you get the whole world handed to you on a silver platter so long as you're a tall, skinny, blonde woman with or without fake tits. Some straight men drool over Ann Coulter, FFS!
And I love Phil's work but I don't fall for the BS regarding him either. Phil knew what Brynn was like—the fact that he joked about her sending threats to his ex-wife says it all. He was likely a shallow narc (is there any other kind?) who picked her out of all people so he can play the part of "sweet, put-upon husband married to evil psycho bitch."

by Anonymous | reply 166 | October 4, 2019 4:28 AM |
Why of all people did he choose Brynn? I'm sure there were plenty of blonde trophy wife types available who would at worst, go on a shopping spree with his credit card if she felt slighted. Why did he gravitate towards someone so batshit?
by Anonymous | reply 167 | October 4, 2019 4:39 AM |
R167 Phil had his own emotional and mental issues. Obviously nothing like hers, but people close to him said he had a serious problem with not knowing how to express his feelings or emotions. His second ex-wife said that on their first anniversary, they went away for what was supposed to be a romantic weekend, and he wanted nothing to do with her sexually, so she just got out a book and read.
My guess is that by the time he met Brynn, he figured he better try to make this one work no matter what since he was 40 and not getting any younger and already had two failed marriages.

It's a bit like a " good girl" from a well-respected family dating an abusve tattooed thug, she secretly gets off on making people tut behind her back and wonder "What does she see in him?" and "She can do so much better!" etc.
I'm sure Phil was an awesome guy to be friends/colleagues with, but that doesn't mean he wasn't fucked-up in his own way.

His weird performance in TalkRadio confirms R168. He is bizarrely unresponsive to the other actors. What he is doing and his line readings make sense....but you never believe that they are actual responses to what everyone else is saying and doing.
He does not interact.

Maybe he saw a side of hers that other didn't. There was more to her that maybe only he knew about. Love is a complex thing. None of us know how they were to each other behind the scenes.
