How accurate is the movie "The Paper Chase"?

Is law school really that stressful? (or are they just depicting the stress at Harvard?)

by Anonymousreply 26October 26, 2019 11:54 AM

It's worse and your classmates are for the most part despicable.

by Anonymousreply 1September 8, 2019 9:48 PM

YES.

by Anonymousreply 2September 9, 2019 2:26 AM

Yes, the professors make you figure out the answers instead of just telling you. Law students should pay their tuition to themselves. Law school would have been a lot easier if they just told you what the cases were about and what the results were.

Mister OP, here is a dime.

Take it.

Call your mother and tell her there is serious doubt about you ever becoming a lawyer.

I went to HLS 20 yrs ago. No, it was nothing like that. Every stupid SJW could say anything they wanted to.

I had been a science major at Harvard College, and that was much, much harder. The Law School was a joke compared to the sciences at Harvard. I truly believe the undergrad science majors were at least 20-30 points higher on the IQ scale.

R5 Who is Hoby Gates?

by Anonymousreply 6September 9, 2019 2:52 AM

You come in here with a skull full of mush , and leave thinking like ... A LAWYER!

by Anonymousreply 7September 9, 2019 3:18 AM

Waste of time and money. Just take the bar exam and start working.

I'm ashamed to admit I did little to no work in law school. I screwed off every semester until about 5 days before exams and binge studied. Same with the bar, which I failed once and the second time I went to Mexico a week before and spent a week on the beach drunk. Of course, little to nothing in law school actually prepares you for practicing law.

by Anonymousreply 12September 9, 2019 6:32 AM

No. No Professor would call on students randomly. Only if student had raised hand or was designated as “on call” for the day, which would happen once a semester.

Lindsey Wagner is good in this movie. Funny how she seemed to go straight into TV after this film. You'd have thought it would bring her some more roles.

by Anonymousreply 14September 10, 2019 5:01 AM

My experience is that Harvard grads in business lie and say they had science majors when they didn't.

by Anonymousreply 15September 10, 2019 5:03 AM

Haha, I was thinking about how Viola Davis is so terrible in How To Get Away With Murder. She played a lecturer like she was Sonny Corleone.

by Anonymousreply 16September 10, 2019 5:11 AM

Poor Viola.

by Anonymousreply 17September 10, 2019 5:12 AM

Sonny Corleone played a university lecturer at in The Gambler. He wasn't particularly convincing, but it was James Caan at his very hottest.

Paper Chase is my dad’s favorite movie.

He’s nerdy though.

by Anonymousreply 20September 10, 2019 5:29 AM

I liked Ford in the TV version.

I've had this movie saved on my computer forever and haven't watched it yet. I always though it looked boring but wanted to see if John Houseman deserved the Supporting Oscar.

Did he, DL? Or was one of the others, Jack Gilford - Save the Tiger, Vincent Gardenia - Bang the Drum Slowly, Jason Miller - The Exoricist, Randy Quaid - The Last Detail, more deserving.

Jason Miller's performance is the iconic and memorable one.

Houseman had a showcase supporting part and ran with it: I think he deserved to win. I loved Randy Quaid as the kleptomaniac sailor in "The Last Detail" too, he was memorably crazy and sad.

I saw 4 of the nominees, (I missed Save the Tiger). I think Houseman's performance is iconic, and yeah, I think he deserved it.
