The main person who was knocked by Me Too is James Franco

His work has really dried up. I think it’s because people are well and truly sick of his schtick.

He is a decent actor and mediocre at the many, many, many things he turns his hands to.

It’s one thing for, say, Ed Harris, to appear in one of his John Steinbeck adaptations. It’s not going to be very good, but no one else is making this stuff, so why not? It’s a very different proposition after Me Too, and you don’t like the guy much and it won’t receive much of a release anyway.

There have to be better examples. Oh, I get it. Season 3 of The Deuce. Also:

Main how?

by Anonymousreply 3October 3, 2019 10:51 PM

I always felt like that story of a student being "forced" to participate in a nude sex scene that she approved of and signed off on was idiotic. I didn't feel sorry for that dumb bitch. Some movies have sex scenes and nudity. Don't like it? Don't do it. No one was holding a gun to her head or threatening her well being if she decided to not be in the movie. She was bitter that she's still unknown after trying to buddy up to Franco.

by Anonymousreply 4October 3, 2019 11:33 PM

"As part of the school, Franco taught a “master class” on sex scenes, according to the complaint. In auditions for the master classes, the students were pressured to engage in sexual activity that went well beyond the industry norm, the plaintiffs allege. The auditions were taped, and Franco would review the tapes to see who would be allowed into the class."

by Anonymousreply 5October 3, 2019 11:46 PM

The girls are beyond ugly. Really deluded about being actresses. Just my two cents.

by Anonymousreply 6October 3, 2019 11:57 PM

I remember he used to be on Instagram and would post pictures and videos everyday. Then after that incident with that teen girl, he shortly after closed his Instagram account and never returned. Then he had several movies that flopped. When he finally got a hit and good reviews for the Disaster Artist, the #metoo allegations came shortly after. The Deuce was more of a cult show rather than a bona fide hit, and cancelled after three seasons. It will be interesting to see if he can get any work.

by Anonymousreply 7October 4, 2019 12:33 AM

R6, not all actresses are pretty or destined to be leading ladies.

Some end up being character or supporting actresses.

by Anonymousreply 8October 4, 2019 12:34 AM

[quote] It will be interesting to see if he can get any work.

He probably won't. Whether an actor has accusations or not, what's resulted from #metoo and the new diversity push in Hollywood is that casting overtly cis white males is now faux pas. So the age of guys like Vince Vaughn, James Franco, Jeremy Piven, etc are done.

by Anonymousreply 9October 4, 2019 12:45 AM

Franco is a member of the tribe. He'll be a leading man again shortly.

by Anonymousreply 10October 4, 2019 12:58 AM

The Deuce wasn’t cancelled. It was only meant for a three season run, following three separate years.

But otherwise, yeah Franco’s not nearly as visible as he was 6-7 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 11October 4, 2019 1:04 AM

Franco is now older, unattractive and not that talented. That probably affected his career too.

by Anonymousreply 12October 4, 2019 1:16 AM

Franco really has taken a big fall.

I remember a decade ago when he was hot stuff on DL.

And now no one can stand him and he's turned out be a douchebag.

by Anonymousreply 13October 4, 2019 1:17 AM

I don't think "the main person" whose career was hurt by #MeToo by any means was James Franco--I think Harvey Weinstein has had a FAR bigger impact on the industry, and had a far more spectacular fall.

by Anonymousreply 14October 4, 2019 1:30 AM

He was never that good an actor.

Plus he is aging and many have made accusations about him. Even his brother said he doesnt know whats wrong with his brother.

by Anonymousreply 15October 4, 2019 1:34 AM

Franco became so pretentious & ridiculous with those university degrees.

by Anonymousreply 16October 4, 2019 1:36 AM

He dragged his brother’s career down with him! Dave Franco was on his way to being the next great leading man in a Hollywood. I’ll never forgive James for what he did to him!

PS he is also one of the first casualties of it.

by Anonymousreply 26October 4, 2019 2:42 AM

Aziz Ansari had a well reviewed special and a tour. He was humiliated but he’s working, if not on the level he was before.

Franco used to work constantly and he has that one show, which is ending, and a shit ton of unreleased self-produced movies.

Not anymore.

I used to think he was hot a decade ago, but now he looks like he hasn't taken a bath in years.

Although not technically part of the #metoo movement, the biggest and most tragic loser here is Bill Cosby.

P.S. I was on all 3 seasons of The Deuce. James Franco is a jerk, the worst "principal" I was ever on set with. And I'm not a woman, I can hardly imagine what they think.

I find the coddling and excusing of Franco, compared to others that have been similarly accused my multiple women (with the same level of evidence - or lack thereof) very interesting on this site.. the DL definitely plays favorites.

by Anonymousreply 47October 4, 2019 9:24 PM

The stories about Franco's acting school sound like a reductio ad absurdum someone would invent in a conversation about sexual exploitation in the industry. He actually got away with charging women to take a sex scenes class and using it to molest hotties. If you put that in a script, people would note that no one could possibly be stupid enough to fall for that scam. But here we are. No matter how stupid or ambitious the victims were, Franco's behavior truly was a shame on the profession.

by Anonymousreply 48October 4, 2019 9:44 PM

Not long ago I came here and mentioned the rumors coming from a group of my nephew's male friends that claimed they were harassed at Studio 4 and I was called a Pizzagate Q anon type.

I'm surprised only girls are suing him.

Funny.

by Anonymousreply 49October 4, 2019 10:00 PM

R48, it's also odd that he would be that obvious about what he was after.

Acting schools don't normally make sex scenes & nudity their primary focus.

by Anonymousreply 50October 5, 2019 1:37 AM

[quote] I think I speak for everyone when I say that Jimmy Franco is a very handsome and very talented man. Thread closed.

You do not speak for "everyone" at all. I do not find him very handsome. I think he has a nasty shit-eating grin. Thread open.

by Anonymousreply 51October 5, 2019 2:14 AM

Ok, it sounds like he was a little over the line? Is he creepy? Is this all a fame grab? The school thing might have been over promising something. The mistake might have been getting too close to these people's own ambitions. He didn't appreciate the power differential. He might have thought he was sharing his work in some way (lol?) and she signed a contract. The whole movie industry seems so arbitrary and ridiculous. Movie fame is stupid. What are these people doing?

by Anonymousreply 52October 5, 2019 4:08 PM

It's weird. They thought he was cool. Because he presented as an ally and someone who could do something for them, he gets dragged the hardest. Maybe he deserves it. No celeb is going to be doing any of this again anytime soon presumably.

by Anonymousreply 53October 5, 2019 4:25 PM

He wants to be involved in something that’s close to porn, without losing his artsy/intellectual image.

by Anonymousreply 54October 5, 2019 6:15 PM

Dustin Hoffman's career is also over now after all the accusations about his lecherous behavior.

by Anonymousreply 55October 5, 2019 6:18 PM

Yeah, possibly, R55, although since Hoffman is 80, he was probably going to be winding it down now anyway, so it's hard to know what difference it will make.

by Anonymousreply 58October 31, 2019 8:50 PM

He is a casualty since he was on the verge of Oscar glory when #MeToo struck. Payback for the gay baiting which he’d taken to ridiculous levels. His only chance of relevance is to come out. Nobody cares who he’s with anymore.

by Anonymousreply 59January 10, 2020 7:29 AM

Did anyone see him in a god awful movie, with “May” somewhere in the title. This crazy girl crushes on him, kills him, Cuts his body parts off - then sews them back up like a doll.

by Anonymousreply 60January 10, 2020 8:11 AM

by Anonymousreply 61January 10, 2020 8:20 AM

I'd love to be a fly on the wall when he meets with his agents.

by Anonymousreply 62January 10, 2020 8:37 AM

I’m in the minority I know; but, I think he’s a good actor. I really do.

by Anonymousreply 63January 10, 2020 8:58 AM

I liked him when he was younger, too. He was hot and seemed to have some intelligence.

But then he became so pretentious with the university degrees, and then all the gay-baiting.

by Anonymousreply 64January 10, 2020 9:16 AM

People are sick of his being a cock tease but never really presents dong. And now I have to jerk off to his leaked dong pix! What a miserable life! I wan to see his dong on 4K bluray!!!!

by Anonymousreply 65January 10, 2020 10:18 AM

Even with the dad bod and the aging face, I would do him. Always been attracted to him.

by Anonymousreply 66January 10, 2020 10:52 AM

I don’t think James Franco’s downfall has been MeToo. I think it has been his talent and his personality more generally. If you ask a random person about him, I would bet more people would refer to his annoyingly pretentious artsiness and his failure to deliver anything very good before they’d mention his creepiness. His work took his career down before the creepiness became a public talking point.

Weinstein, on the other hand, was totally bulletproof to any and all accusations for decades, and yet ultimately he was such a rapist that millions of dollars paid to the shadiest lawyers didn’t protect him. He really is the ultimate example of the power of the MeToo movement. He wasn’t compromised by shoddy output like Franco has been. He is just a monster.

by Anonymousreply 67January 10, 2020 11:05 AM

Honestly I think it was more about the fact that everyone realized he was gaybaiting when he was outed as hitting on underaged girls. A lot of people thought he was genuinely fluid sexually, and then he turned out to be just another aging creeper. If you've branded yourself as different and unique and turn out to just be a basic bitch, people will drop you in a hot second.

by Anonymousreply 68January 10, 2020 11:08 AM

I have a hard time taking anything you say seriously after claiming what happened to Bill Cosby was 'tragic'. He drugged and raped who knows how many women over the years. He is a true rapist and nothing that's happened to him is tragic. The only tragic thing is that he got away with it for so long.

To my knowledge Franco has never raped anyone, and those claims by the disgruntled students sound more like trying to get an easy payday since they know he's a millionaire. Older men trying to bed barely legal women? Business as usual and happens everywhere all the time. If it's not illegal who the fuck cares? It's just like older guys going after twinks and twunks. You can try but it only turns illegal if you don't take a no for an answer.

I've wondered more than once how much crap these liberal Hollywood guys are getting is coming from right wingers who are trying to take down people they see as threats. Unfortunately they are joined by bloodthirsty women who are pouring all their anger and angst of being mistreated for so long on these famous people of whose lives they know nothing about. But hey, some old creep pinched their tit once in a subway so ALL MEN MUST DIE!!! And obviously some woke men get on the hate train as well since they feel the pain their fellow men have caused women all these centuries.

by Anonymousreply 69January 10, 2020 11:23 AM

The people who claimed Franco was acting inappropriately toward them never did anything that indicated they wanted a payout. Lazy people always say "those bitches just wanted money" but usually there is no evidence of that at all.

by Anonymousreply 70January 10, 2020 11:32 AM

R70, a quick googling took me a to an article about the two female students suing Franco.

"The women are seeking unspecified damages. They also want an apology and the destruction of any videos Franco and his partners still have from their time in the class."

by Anonymousreply 82January 12, 2020 11:48 AM

He also ruined William Faulkner’s classic As I Lay Dying

by Anonymousreply 83January 14, 2020 9:37 AM

James is a hot darling, im tired of these $ grubbing wenches attacking him/James dean!

by Anonymousreply 84January 14, 2020 10:02 AM

Franco will do what he does best. Lay low for a while and then do some art house movies. Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow love him and they will throw a role or two in his direction if he needs one.

Of course, things would be different if Franco was indeed gay and was attached to a scandal like Kevin Spacey.

And there are (hundreds of) thousands of wannabe actors in Hollywood desperate to make it. These acting classes by actors are a big scam to make them believe that this is a sure way to get a talent agent interested in them. Franco preyed upon the stupid and the desperate.

by Anonymousreply 85January 14, 2020 10:16 AM

I agree. These fools threw themselves at him, they all liked him. They thought being in his orbit was a quick pass to becoming a STAR.

by Anonymousreply 87January 14, 2020 1:05 PM

by Anonymousreply 93January 14, 2020 7:28 PM

I just don't have much sympathy for him. He's a con artist, parlaying his charm and his celebrity into all kinds of things he should not have had. He did not get into any of the Ivy league and high-status programs for graduate school other than Yale because his work and his grades were not high enough, and it was clear he had no interest in really becoming a professor some day; but he got into Yale because the chair, Michael Warner, is gay and was dazzled by his celebrity. (I got this right from the mouth of friends who are professors at those schools and especially from one who is at Yale). He's had the chance to direct multiple films and they've all been awful; and when he has taught at Yale and at acting schools and film schools, he always sleeps with his female students (which is incredibly unethical).

It doesn't sound yet like he's done anything illegal, but I know for a fact that he has done tons of things that are highly unethical. Though it is a fantasy for many DLers, if you are a teacher you just cannot sleep with your students--that is just plain wrong.

by Anonymousreply 94January 14, 2020 8:12 PM

I feel much worse for Ansari. I read that woman's full story and we're always told to believe the victims and I believed every damn word she wrote. Unfortunately, I thought it made her come off as a cunt. They started having sex, she got uncomfortable, told him to stop, he did, and even called her a ride home and checked on her the next day. Sorry, bitch, but he sounds like a perfect gentleman to me. It sounded like a classic case of a bad date with no chemistry. I've been there tons of times. You think maybe you'll end up at least having sexual chemistry and that turns out to be a dud, too, so you stop, cut your losses and go home. "Non-verbal cues" do not exist. If you're feeling uncomfortable, you tell someone.

by Anonymousreply 95January 14, 2020 8:34 PM

by Anonymousreply 99January 15, 2020 1:19 AM

[quote] "Non-verbal cues" do not exist. If you're feeling uncomfortable, you tell someone.

Totally. Tbat was ridiculous. He was supposed to read her mind. Also, she never presented herself as having the choice to leave at any time. I guess you don't want to disappoint your date per se. He didn't have to all forward with sex but she didn't even have to go to his apartment. Some of people talk like they have no control or say over their own choices.

by Anonymousreply 100January 15, 2020 1:51 AM

As a man... I would go to a gentleman's apartment at the end of the first date imagining there'd probably be some fooling around. If I didn't want to do anything I would very clearly say, let's just watch TV or I would leave.

by Anonymousreply 101January 15, 2020 2:01 AM

by Anonymousreply 103January 15, 2020 3:09 AM

Seth Rogen has hinted many times that Franco fucks guys too. The best example was in a radio interview which I can't seem to find.

by Anonymousreply 104January 15, 2020 1:01 PM

Judd Apatow is going to find out that being the Woke King will bite him in the ass someday. He's a straight cis white heterosexual, and he will be devoured one day as a result of that. Mark my words.

by Anonymousreply 105January 15, 2020 8:23 PM

R95, “non-verbal cues” are real in many contexts, but everyone knows straight men cannot read them. They have to have everything spelled out for them.

by Anonymousreply 106January 15, 2020 8:35 PM

My understanding was that most people sympathized with Ansari after that article was published and thought the writer was full of bullshit; even so, he's not been much evident since then, so maybe she tarred him despite her ridiculous accusations (which basically amounted to 'we had a bad sex I agreed to at the time, so in retrospect, it must have been date-rape').

by Anonymousreply 107January 15, 2020 8:55 PM

Weirdly, I was never a fan of Ansari, and thought he was just loud and not funny at all. But that chick really pulled an unfair hit job on him. And it was just when he was about to get big mainstream.

by Anonymousreply 108January 16, 2020 1:11 AM

#MeToo is one hell of an argument in favor of homosexuality. If all of these actors like Franco and Ansari would just switch from hole to pole they'd still have careers. I can't think of a single example of dudes doing this outside of Spacey and maybe the Terry Crews thing. Women are spiteful creatures who will do whatever it takes to climb the ladder.

by Anonymousreply 109January 16, 2020 2:16 AM

Does this drag little brother Dave and his wife Allison Brie down with him? They seemed to ride in his wake as smaller fish...

by Anonymousreply 113January 17, 2020 1:00 AM

The thing is, he marketed himself as James Franco’s little brother.

by Anonymousreply 114January 17, 2020 6:12 PM

[quote]Weirdly, I was never a fan of Ansari, and thought he was just loud and not funny at all.

Same but strangely I did love "Master of None" which shocked me since I couldn't stand him on Parks and Rec. Some really brilliant individual episodes came out of that series.

[quote]What I found insufferable was the series of articles and stories, in venerable media like E!

I'm of the party that thinks this was more or less going to happen eventually or rather the man isn't working because he was already generally annoying to people.

by Anonymousreply 115January 17, 2020 6:19 PM

True. He didn’t have any real friends. His asshollery towards Anne Hathaway during and after that disastrous Oscar gig showed how unlikeable he might be in private.

by Anonymousreply 116January 18, 2020 5:35 AM

My sister is an academic and she told me that she heard endless stories about him creeping on (usually much younger) female students when he was getting all of his vanity degrees.

Despite DL insisting that he was gay, I was no surprised when #metoo came for him

by Anonymousreply 117January 18, 2020 7:09 AM

Did he ever get a degree anyplace he was supposedly taking courses?

by Anonymousreply 118January 18, 2020 7:16 AM

R118 Yeah, multiple ones.

by Anonymousreply 119January 18, 2020 7:19 AM

Sure Jan r118. Aside from DL gossip, and his own actions, his friends, like Seth Rogen, have never spilled that he’s been with guys. It was all just art.

by Anonymousreply 120January 18, 2020 10:13 PM

He is a horrid actor.

by Anonymousreply 121January 18, 2020 11:34 PM

[quote] Does this drag little brother Dave and his wife Allison Brie down with him? They seemed to ride in his wake as smaller fish...

Nope.

In the USA we tend not to blame people for crimes other family members have committed.

by Anonymousreply 122January 19, 2020 12:09 AM

Yep R23 he is and I would still eat the peanuts out of his shit! I like that sexy sleazy look.

by Anonymousreply 123January 19, 2020 12:28 AM

R122 In the USA we also tend to believe in right to a fair trial and shy away from mob justice... or at least we used to. If we've done away with those why hang on to this?

by Anonymousreply 124January 19, 2020 6:27 AM

Someone shouldn't have a career, job or entire life ruined because of a minor sexual offense. We shouldn't put being a sleazo or,pervert in the same category as a rapist or molestor...

by Anonymousreply 125January 19, 2020 8:27 AM

Sleazy as hell

by Anonymousreply 128January 19, 2020 2:12 PM

Michael Fassbender has way worse accusations against him and he’s skating away. What’s the deal with that?

He’s a better actor I guess.

by Anonymousreply 129January 19, 2020 4:03 PM

R129 Fassbender is the better actor, keeps his life private so he's in the paper less which means less attention, and something tells me he's spending very good money towards keeping those accusations under the mud.

by Anonymousreply 130January 19, 2020 4:10 PM

He’s not handsome to me anymore. Actually fug in r127

by Anonymousreply 131January 19, 2020 6:11 PM

Franco's career was dead long before MeToo came to town.

by Anonymousreply 132January 19, 2020 6:32 PM

Not true at all. The Disaster Artist was well received he won a GG and looked like an Oscar nominee.

by Anonymousreply 133January 19, 2020 6:53 PM

If he’s still with the beard, that would be his longest relationship ever.

by Anonymousreply 134January 19, 2020 8:57 PM

The beard is boring. If he is bi, having a boyfriend would make him more interesting these days.

by Anonymousreply 135January 19, 2020 9:14 PM

He should do full nudity to make up for making his acting students do it.. Before he gets too old.

by Anonymousreply 136January 20, 2020 12:44 AM

I think I speak for everyone when I say that Jimmy Franco is super hot.

by Anonymousreply 137January 20, 2020 1:37 AM

No, you don't speak for everyone.

by Anonymousreply 138January 20, 2020 6:53 PM

The paparazzi shots weren’t changing public opinion so he’s stopped that.

by Anonymousreply 139January 21, 2020 7:56 AM

His career has literally vanished before our eyes. He used to be everywhere.

by Anonymousreply 140January 23, 2020 7:50 AM

I think it is too soon to tell His HBO series just ended and The Disaster Artist was going on 3 years ago. He has a couple films completed but not screened He has more than 150 credits on IMDb. I’m sure General Hospital would take him back.

by Anonymousreply 141January 23, 2020 8:24 AM

"Bobby Peru" was 4x sleazier. Great performance. Franco is a wannabe for acting like a sleaze.

Jimmy's only path to redemption is to make gay independent films for a few years. He needs to reinvent himself, become known for gritty gay independent cinema. Think of the gay film making movement of the 90s.

by Anonymousreply 143January 23, 2020 5:42 PM

The only real redemption is to quietly set up a legit production company and produce women and especially women of color pieces, get lots of critical acclaim and awards buzz, win a few, and then reveal himself to be behind the company.

by Anonymousreply 144January 26, 2020 6:41 PM

R144 There's no way someone that's been MeToo-ed could secretly be behind a company, especially a company that mainly produces women, in the smartphone age. Word would get out before Oscar season and then articles would be everywhere. The Daily Mail would have a field day.

by Anonymousreply 145January 26, 2020 6:54 PM

Still no new photos with the young beard. Proof the previous flurry was staged.

by Anonymousreply 146January 28, 2020 9:38 PM

Oh give me a break. He's no victim. He'll have a comeback in a few years. He's just having having some downtime because he was overexposed for so long.

by Anonymousreply 147January 28, 2020 9:44 PM

by Anonymousreply 150January 29, 2020 9:55 AM

Oh please, Aziz deserved what happened to him from a career perspective. Remember, his whole shtick at the time was being Mr. Woke Feminist. That article didn't portray him as a criminal or even a garden-variety predator. He just looked like such a whiny loser begging for sex. It belied his whole persona. Until you can get to a level where everyone has to sign an NDA, you just have to watch your behavior.

by Anonymousreply 151January 29, 2020 10:32 AM

[quote]Weirdly, I was never a fan of Ansari, and thought he was just loud and not funny at all. But that chick really pulled an unfair hit job on him.

I think the editors were more responsible than she was, because she was clearly a confused young lady who didn't really understand what #MeToo was. She knew she was uncomfortable and he'd been acting like a cad, but beyond that, she simply didn't have the language to describe what happened in a way that made sense. Older editors looking for clickbait took her story and plugged into the #MeToo format, and I'm sure they knew it wasn't really a #MeToo situation, and they did it on purpose.

by Anonymousreply 152January 29, 2020 12:26 PM

I was thinking about what happened to Franco the other day, I’d sort of forgotten about him, I didn’t make the connection with the #metoo accusations, now that I’m thinking about it, I think you’re right. His career definitely took a hit from them, everyone said he would be nominated for an Oscar for The Disaster Artist until those allegations against him hit the headlines, he seemed to quietly disappear after that. I definitely don’t think his career is over, he’s probably been advised to lay low for a while. He’s aged a lot in the last 5 years. He looks worn out.

by Anonymousreply 153January 29, 2020 12:53 PM

Where is CASey Affleck?

by Anonymousreply 154January 29, 2020 1:12 PM

Casey Affleck is just such a sullen cunt, he just isn’t worth saving.

by Anonymousreply 155January 29, 2020 11:10 PM

He looks like he’s at the age where he has to fight to keep the weight off. This is him in 2018 before he lost the weight and it came back by the the end of 2019. Maybe he’s laying low while trying to get in shape again?

by Anonymousreply 159January 31, 2020 2:34 AM

He didn't take as much heat as he deserved., Raping teenage acting studnets? he shouldl have got the Kevin Sapcey treatment. If his victims were male he'd never be able to show his face again.

He'll have a big comebackj in a couple of years.

by Anonymousreply 160January 31, 2020 4:35 AM

He didn’t rape anybody. No one is excising him for that.

by Anonymousreply 161January 31, 2020 5:24 AM

Didnt he start going down on some teen girl when they were doing a scene? There's a thing called "consent".

by Anonymousreply 162January 31, 2020 5:31 AM

Spacey has the talent to make a comeback. That movie he was cut from and the last season of House of Cards are seen to have failed because of his absence. And both his videos got millions of views on YouTube.

by Anonymousreply 163January 31, 2020 12:30 PM

Franco over did it. For awhile he was in half the movies that were out.

by Anonymousreply 164January 31, 2020 1:26 PM

That movie got the actor who replaced him an Oscar nomination and Spacey looked like he played his entire role in bad old age makeup which is usually a bad idea.

by Anonymousreply 165January 31, 2020 5:35 PM

The Oscar nom was due to the publicity. The movie still failed.

by Anonymousreply 166February 3, 2020 5:27 PM

by Anonymousreply 170February 7, 2020 4:12 PM

I'm trying to imagine what I'd do as his publicist because the young beard strategy has clearly failed.

by Anonymousreply 171February 10, 2020 8:25 AM

LOL.

[quote] “Here’s a good Michael Jackson story that doesn’t involve Michael Jackson at all: I ran into James Franco on a plane,” Culkin told Esquire in a new interview. “I’d bumped into him two or three times over the years. I give him a little nod as we’re putting our bags overhead. Hey, how you doing? Good, how ya doing? And it was right after the Leaving Neverland documentary came out, and he goes, ‘So, that documentary!’ And that was all he said. I was like, ‘Uh-huh.’ Silence. So then he goes, ‘So what do you think?’ And I turned to him and I go, ‘Do you wanna talk about your dead friend?’ And he sheepishly went, ‘No, I don’t.’ So I said, ‘Cool, man, it was nice to see you.’”

How do you ask someone you barely know something so personal?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 172February 11, 2020 11:41 PM

Also, that Culkin is publicly naming him is the surest sign that he’s over. When someone is still relevant they go anonymous with “a pretty well-known actor”.

by Anonymousreply 173February 11, 2020 11:43 PM

Were the young women he cast in his ‘Mother, May I Sleep With Danger?’ remake chosen from his “intimacy” class? There’s tons of gratuitous, albeit fairly campy, lesbian soft-core in that.

by Anonymousreply 174February 12, 2020 12:34 AM

He promised them stardom.

by Anonymousreply 175February 12, 2020 5:35 AM

his career has never added up, to me. no talent, but put in things that in themselves had potential. so, he has good judgement (or nepotism) getting him good roles that he is a failure in.

how'd he get to be a known name? i think i prefer Vincent Gallo for pretentious arty edgy guy over him.

by Anonymousreply 176February 12, 2020 6:05 AM

Imagine Faulkner’s ‘As I Lay Dying’ in the right hands. Would’ve been a classic.

by Anonymousreply 177February 12, 2020 5:00 PM

He can go away forever as far as I'm concerned.

by Anonymousreply 178February 12, 2020 5:02 PM

R172 Macaulay should have responded to James, “What do you think about all the current allegations about YOU?”

It blows me away that dummy James would ask that when he’s got his own allegations going on. So glad he’s over.

by Anonymousreply 179February 12, 2020 5:35 PM

Franco’s biggest sin, as far as I’m concerned, is how he blatantly baited and used the gay community. Now I don’t for one second believe he’s straight, but that crossed the line.

by Anonymousreply 180February 12, 2020 5:45 PM

I don't for one second believe he's gay.

by Anonymousreply 181February 12, 2020 6:03 PM

Not sure how anyone could possibly believe a pussy hound like Franco is gay, considering the trouble he's in stems from the sexual harassment he brought on those women taking his "classes" at his "school."

by Anonymousreply 182February 12, 2020 6:07 PM

I like that he has enthusiasm for less mainstream projects, like for instance actually trying to make Child of God into a movie (!!!), but the execution often leaves something to be desired.

by Anonymousreply 183February 12, 2020 6:11 PM

Bisexuality exists. Too much gossip about his shenanigans with men, in addition to the #MeToo stuff.

by Anonymousreply 184February 12, 2020 6:24 PM

Bisexuality is not the same as homosexuality, so he's not gay. I don't even believe he's bisexual; I think he's a con man.

by Anonymousreply 185February 12, 2020 6:29 PM

I would wish he’d have nothing to do with our community, but Seth Rogen May have let it slip in a radio interview I was listening to live back in the day. I think he’s bisexual.

by Anonymousreply 186February 12, 2020 6:36 PM

[quote]Imagine Faulkner’s ‘As I Lay Dying’ in the right hands. Would’ve been a classic.

It makes me angry almost, r177. If James Franco had any sense he would produce the works and farm it out to an excellent screenwriter and a talented director who can work on a low budget, as Franco himself can act pretty well but neither write nor direct.

Such waste.

by Anonymousreply 187February 12, 2020 7:01 PM

by Anonymousreply 190February 13, 2020 2:09 PM

James Franco said in an interview that was 'gay' up to intercourse, which he wouldn't do. I can believe he's sucked cock, even if he is 95% straight. I can totally believe that, when they got stoned, he definitely went down on Seth Rogan for the fun of it.

by Anonymousreply 191February 13, 2020 4:41 PM

I totally can't believe that since Seth Rogan would not go along with that. Is that your fantasy, R191?

by Anonymousreply 193February 14, 2020 5:08 AM

So is Bernie Madoff, but that's another story.

by Anonymousreply 215February 24, 2020 7:29 PM

I was the biggest Franco fan around. I found him painfully attractive. I tivo'd his General Hospital episodes, I went to his art installations, I defended him to anyone who didn't like him.

Frankly, the allegations made about him regarding #metoo didn't seem all that horrible. Was it sleazy? Yeah. But I'm not so sure that he's guilty of anything that the vast majority of hot young actors get up to. I honestly didn't get it at all.

That said, for some reason, and it DID seem to coincide with the #metoo stuff, the bloom is really off the rose with him for me. I've completely lost interest in him, and when I see him now he does nothing for me. It could also be that I dated a guy who looked just like him, and it ended very badly. Or it could be is painfully one note performance in The Deuce on HBO.

I've never had it happen like this where I've lost interest in a favorite public personality over night.

I still love his turn as Allen Ginsberg. His reading of Howl I still really love.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 216February 24, 2020 7:52 PM

R216 Yes, you've kind of nailed my feelings about him. I was a super-fan way back, and the way he annoyed certain people only made me like him more. I found his constant digging through and exposure of lost gay artists and works and uncredited artists from the past to be endearing (even sometimes educational). All the wacky media hi-jinx and performance art stuff ran against the grain of dreary, dull mainstream celebrity culture. He was a mixed bag but I loved it. And I still think he's sexy as hell for the most part.

But like you I reached a breaking point. I got so tired of being disappointed by his work! It was always half-there, if even. The art work, the poetry, the novels, the directing. Endless frustration trying to justify it to myself as a fan when clearly it just... there was very little "there" there. I think his actual one skill is his a screen presence as an actor in other people's films. That's it.

Finally I gave up around the time of THE ROOM. I'd been a fan of the original film THE ROOM going way, way back... long before he discovered, it before he seemed to. The original ROOM film is a masterpiece of bad filmmaking and insanity. His film about the film was just really thin and obvious and melodramatic. Such a twee take on it all, like it was made for kids.

By the time the #metoo stuff hit (which to me seems very overblown in his case). I'd just lost interest in him. Too much for too long. I became an un-fan, weirdly.

I still like him but... meh.

by Anonymousreply 217February 24, 2020 9:51 PM

James is over. Not a single female he ever dated came to his defense. He was always known as a creep and was hitting on underage girls in plain sight. I went from admiring him to believing he was a jerk. Good riddance

by Anonymousreply 218February 24, 2020 9:57 PM

Add me to the list of people who used to be a fan and now is no longer interested. I actually met him once years ago when he released some book he wrote and spoke to him briefly. He was charming and good looking back then. But then came the nonstop mediocre projects, the gay baiting, the trying to hookup with a teenager, etc. And now with the accusations, as well as the Amber Heard stuff, I’m just totally over him.

by Anonymousreply 219February 24, 2020 9:59 PM

I was never a fan of his work because, frankly, none of it is good. But I did enjoy the persona. He never became a mainstream A-lister, but was handsome and interesting. But I went off him long before #metoo stuff. He’s not a good actor and not especially talented in any other way I can get I can support.

I have a bazillion images saved on my hard drive from his old Instagram. I'm glad I did that because one day he just deleted the whole thing, and I'm glad I have them. It was an interesting timeline of his activity, the photos often documented his art activity and weird stunts.

The feeling in the art world was we were really frustrated by him because there were thousands of young good-looking guys making homoerotic art who were unknowns and struggling and James was just stealing all the attention with work that was really well funded and connected and had mind-blowing exposure but really wasn't very good and the ideas weren't exactly original.

by Anonymousreply 231February 25, 2020 12:42 PM

Bump for Franco news.

most of these me too caualties will be back. any investor/producer who thinks they can make a buck will hire them in an instant. most of these performers were way over exposed anyway... and the complaint by the women in the sex study class reads like an article from the Onion.

But is anyone begging for a Franco return? Aziz Ansari is basically innocent and his career is done. Ironically, Kevin Spacey is the only one controlling the narrative with his two creepy videos on Youtube and many of the commenters there want him back.

R237, selection bias- the people who want to see him will watch his videos. The rest of us are a hard pass.

The videos have millions of views, though.

Franco is hardly the person who's career was affected most by allegations. I will say, he was getting insufferable the 5 or so years leading up to the Disaster Artist. I increasingly got the vibe his parents made him feel a little too special, or maybe it was just his time in the industry. He tried to come off as some genius, misunderstood artist and as some sort of polymath. I remember reading all this B.S. (he only has to sleep 3-4hrs a day, he reads X number of books a week). He's a mediocre good-looking guy. He became one of those Hollywood types that thinks they're making "serious" art that challenges the very idea of what it means to be human, when their message is about as deep as a college freshman's Philosophy 101 essay.

Weird. I never really thought about it in this way before, but even though Franco is objectively attractive (or was, anyway), I am as creeped out and turned off by him as I am by Harvey Weinstein and was by Michael Jackson. He’s just off in ways that make everything about him unappealing. I avoid his movies just because I don’t like to look at or think about him, and that was the case even before I knew he was actually doing creepy things.

Why did Franco even have an acting school? What stand-out understanding of his craft has he shown that others would wish to emulate?
