by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 6, 2019 2:58 AM |
Met her just a few years ago at Chiller. She was an old woman and looked like an lovely old woman. You know damn well that was harsh lighting in those photos. Seems some of you queens expect every celebrity to look like Joan Rivers who actually looked like an alien. 70 + year olds have wrinkles. You will too, if you're lucky.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 6, 2019 2:58 AM |
She looked fine. She was old, whaddya want?
Both my MIL and mother died of heart attacks. I hope for a nice massive coronary, too. Pretty quick and a lot less suffering than languishing in a nursing home with disgruntled Jamaicans snapping at you or smacking you. Or dying painfully of cancer.
RIP, Ms. Lynley.

I thought she was dead.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 6, 2019 3:50 AM |
She was in Otto Preminger's thriller "Bunny Lake is Missing" in 1965; when promoting the movie, she praised the famously temperamental Preminger to the press, and he later told her, "You're ruining my reputation!" Like Michael Caine on a later Preminger movie, "Hurry Sundown", she said she managed fine because she wasn't afraid of Preminger and he knew it.
RIP

I remember being 5 years old and seeing Carol Lynley as Rapunzel in a 1958 "Shirley Temple Storybook" episode. The witch who imprisoned her was played by (who else?) Agnes Moorehead.

by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 6, 2019 4:12 AM |
Her performance in "Bunny Lake is Missing" remains one of the most amateurish performances I've ever seen. She was just astoundingly bad in it.

Smoker, I'll bet. Those are some nicotine stained teeth.

Bunny Lake is Missing, but Carol Lynley is dead.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | September 6, 2019 4:23 AM |
She was the other Harlow in that crappy, low budget version. It was Ginger Rogers last film. Why she agreed to do it, who knows? It couldn't have been for the money. It was so cheaply made.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 6, 2019 4:27 AM |
Carol Lynley's cheap-ass "Harlow" movie was cranked out to beat the big-budget Carroll Baker version to movie theaters. Angela Lansbury plays the mother in Baker's version, and is so much better than the material. She's actually rather moving. Luckily for Angela, she had better projects in her future. She packed her bags and headed for Broadway.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | September 6, 2019 4:34 AM |
I resented her. She got a lot of killed on that fucking ship by being a scared nitwit.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | September 6, 2019 4:36 AM |
She said she was relieved she was in England when Harlow was released in America because the reviews were so scathing.

by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 6, 2019 5:01 AM |
I didn’t hate her in The Poseidon Adventure, but I always thought she was the weak link acting-wise.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 6, 2019 5:06 AM |
I liked her. She deserved better than an obituary filled with sloppy grammar and word choice (at OP).
"she played 15-year-old Janet Willard tasked with figuring out how to undergo an illegal abortion." "TASKED WITH" has gone too far. Tasked? Who assigned her the task?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 6, 2019 5:08 AM |
Perhaps my favorite non-sequitur in "The Poseidon Adventure":
Red Buttons: "Your brother is dead."
Carol Lynley: "Did you like his music?"
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 6, 2019 5:10 AM |
R17
Carol did NOT like Red Buttons.

Goodness knows what role Shelley Winters is playing in all this.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | September 6, 2019 5:39 AM |
R27, I hated her character, too. All the gals were admirably spunky, except her. She couldn't even swim and had to be helped by Red Buttons of all people!
Roger Ebert interviewed Carol back in 1972, and you can just imagine him rolling his eyes throughout the whole ordeal, especially when she mentioned the possiblity of scoring an Oscar nom for her performance! She also made some bitchy remarks about Shelley.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 6, 2019 5:44 AM |
There is a heart of cruelty in that photo of her. Someone has lovingly zoomed in. I don't even know her, but I saw the Poseidon Adventure on Netflix. Old white fags on Datalounge love to obsess and worship dead monsters like Joan Crawford and Judy Garland, but have no compassion for an actress who looks like them. Lynley's biggest misfortune is to resemble you.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | September 6, 2019 6:17 AM |
Matthew Rettemund is an unabashed gay fangurl, and his write-ups of meeting various celebrities at various autograph shows are very honest, but warm and appreciative. He liked Carol when he met her.

by Anonymous | reply 40 | September 6, 2019 7:45 AM |
R35 Don't get my wrong - a love Shelley Winters but she was a notorious difficult person to deal with. So sad about Carol's passing - she was a favourite of mine. Of The Poseidon Adventure cast members only Gene Hackman (pushing 90), Stella Stevens (ill with Alzheimers), Pamela Sue Martin and the annoying kid that played her annoying brother are still with us.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | September 6, 2019 8:13 AM |
I first saw her as Rapunzel on Shirley Temple's Storybook.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | September 6, 2019 8:32 AM |
I'm assuming she had to fellate Daryl F Zanuck and Harry Cohn.
She had all the charisma as a glass of water.
I thought it was insane in 'Bunny Lake' that such an uninteresting person should waste our time in the main role while the most important man in 20th century theatre was playing the servant.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | September 6, 2019 8:50 AM |
I loved her so much. Stunning depth and so pretty. She cried well. Sob
by Anonymous | reply 44 | September 6, 2019 8:56 AM |
She started out as a model. I found a stack of old American Girl magazines in the attic that belonged to my sister. These were from the late 50s/early 60s. A fascinating time capsule, Andy Warhol did the the illustrations. Anyway, she was a top teen model, she had a very appealing, fresh-faced look in those back-to-school spreads. Her look was very distinct so I guess it's not surprising that she went into acting.

Just watched “Return to Peyton Place” this week. Did I jinx her?
by Anonymous | reply 54 | September 6, 2019 4:19 PM |
I watched it, too, R54. As Allison, Carol Lynley was no Diane Varsi. And as Constance, Eleanor Parker was no Lana Turner, but that was probably for the best. In the sequel, Carol has an affair with Jeff Chandler, who is at no point seen wearing polka dots.
BTW, Barry Coe, who played Rodney Harrington in the original "Peyton Place" movie, died last month. He was 84. After that auspicious role, his career never really took off.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | September 6, 2019 4:59 PM |
R55, I didn't know Barry Coe died. He was a handsome fellow. He appeared in a lot of movies and tv shows, but never became a big star nor even an RJ Wagner type of career.

Barry Coe died July 16. I mistakenly said last month.

That's why "The Poseidon Adventure" is a classic, it was all real, real water, real fire, and real danger, controlled danger, but real. And she really did lose her breath in that shot underwater where Red Buttons covers her face.

by Anonymous | reply 69 | September 6, 2019 9:17 PM |
That was Stella Stevens in THE MAD ROOM, not Lynley. It's a lousy quasi-remake of the 1940's thriller LADIES IN RETIREMENT.
And I agree that Lynley is poor in BUNNY LAKE, which is too bad because it's a generally well-made film (especially compared to the dreck that Preminger put out during most of the 1960's). She's a woman who's child is missing but she never manages an emotion more intense than mild irritation, as if she lost a handbag. A few rather unfortunate scenes with Noel Coward could be excised as well.
Here's a photo of Lynley with Ann-Margret and Pamela Tiffin from THE PLEASURE SEEKERS, a bad remake of THREE COINS IN THE FOUNTAIN.
I also recall two thrillers she made - neither much good: THE SHUTTERED ROOM (from an H.P. Lovecraft story) with Gig Young (!) as her husband, and a cheesy remake of STRANGERS ON A TRAIN called ONCE YOU KISS A STRANGER, where she plays the psycho and Paul Burke in the Farley Granger role.

Under the Yum Yum Tree, now there's a movie that would never get made today, unless reworked as an ironic feminist messsage movie. Jack Lemmon as a libidinous landlord of an apartment complex full of shapely young women is lecherous and annoying. He spends most of the movie ogling virginal Carol, sexually harassing and stalking her... for comedy!

r101, she was a pretty famous starlet in the 60s and 70s. Granted, her heyday has been over for a long time, but film buffs and people over 50 will probably know her. But this is the datalounge, where people will mourn the death of some obscure feminist just because she bashed transgender people.

R101
You're obviously young; Otherwise, you'd know that Lynley was well known young actress in the 1960s. She was bordering on major stardom in the mid-60s but for whatever reasons it didn't pan out. She made several movies with Preminger. By the 70s she was mostly on tv in guest starring roles.
