'Black Christmas' (2019)
Directed by Sophia Takal (Always Shine), written by Takal and April Wolfe, produced by Jason Blum for his Blumhouse Productions. The seminal slasher from 1974 already has a remake from 2006.
[quote]One by one, sorority girls on campus are being killed by an unknown stalker. But the killer is about to discover that this generation’s young women aren’t willing to become hapless victims as they mount a fight to the finish.
In theaters Friday, December 13th.

Why? The 2006 remake substituted gore for actual suspense. Why another one?

r2 Because that one has a score of 22 on Metacritic?

Obviously it is not "just" a stalker/prey movie, it strongly implies there is a conspiracy etc and the sorority has go all Justice League and stop it!

Did they just give everything away in the trailer?

OMG they just redid this.
Jason Blum is an insatiable bottom.

Looks like a Hulu or Netflix original movie. Doesn't look like anything special.

My mother’s version of a bedtime story was to tell me horror/ghost stories. She thought the synopsis to Black Christmas (IT’S COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE!) was totally cool to tell right before bed.

Did the Redundant Horror Thread Troll get his own studio? TOO MUCH CHRISTMAS HORROR, TOO SOON.
They all must be PUNISHED!

Well, BLACK CHRISTMAS did it first, r12.
And it was an urban legend before that.

Here's an old Angelfire website for the original. I seem to remember you could hear breathing on it back in the day but not now. John Saxon was so damned sexy.

Agree with r5. They need to trim that trailer way the fuck down.
Cary Elwes seems to have found a new chapter in his career as a corrupt authority figure after his not as Mayor on Stranger Things.

I have grown an appreciation for the remake over the years. It's completely absent of genuine scares, suspense, or likable characters, but it's so gorgeous to look at and has its moments of dark humor. Not a good film, but so few holiday horror films have stood the test of time, so it's a decent one to throw into the playlist.

Is the blonde in the poster from Riverdale?

r18 The four actresses are Imogen Poots, Brittany O’Grady, Aleyse Shannon, and Lily Donaghue. None of them have appeared on Riverdale.

Andrea Martin (AKA SCTV’s Edith Prickley) was in the original version!

Yikes. My hopes are completely dashed—looks poorly acted, and the trailer is edited like an early-2000s slasher flick; plus, it literally gives away the ENTIRE movie. Plot crux: Cary Elwes, the professor, is part of some all-male Skull & Bones-style secret society that sacrifices female students—but WAIT, they're no match for these millennial Tumblr feminists! Totally uninspired. The original is a phenomenal thriller, and the 2006 remake was trashy fun, but this just looks dull. On a positive note, Cary Elwes is looking pretty hot again.

This was written and directed by Sophia Takal, who was involved in a plethora of mumblecore trash. Of course she would use this remake as an opportunity to comment on female oppression and #MeToo. Boring, and a little late to the party.

John Carpenter totally stole the concept of Halloween from Black Christmas.
Halloween has been credited as starting the slasher craze and the concept of setting horror films on special days, but Black Christmas was the real originator of both trends.

Yeah, I saw one of the writers (April Wolfe) tweeted the link to the trailer today but also obliquely suggested people maybe shouldn't watch it. She obviously can't say that outright because the marketing department would eat her alive. I guess cutting the trailer falls to Blumhouse, and the director and the writer have little control over it, especially with these smaller movies.

The original Christmas horror worth a damn so no surprise to see it become a name brand at this point. The film was unheralded for many years but finally got its due, fortunately before the director passed.

The new poster is really bad, and the marketing team is playing the "woke feminist" angle to the hilt. "Slay, girls." Come on now.

r27 I love that; so simple but it just works. Funny how one single comma changes it from a command to slay girls into a cheer for the girls to be badass. Works on about three different levels *and* taps into the current zeitgeist. That's quite an achievement.
In other news, the director retweeted this recut trailer on her private account today, so she's definitely aware that the official one sucks.

So are any horror queens here going to see this, or what?
I heard they went with a PG-13 rating to reach a wider audience, though I also heard that doesn't really detract from the horror that much.

Oh, god, I just saw the RT rating - 4.6/10 from Top Critics. 😬

It's getting critically wrecked, so I'm not going to see it. The trailer they put out a few months ago looked truly terrible—worse than a direct-to-DVD movie

I have never wanted the main characters in a slasher movie to DIE A HORRIBLE DEATH, more than these girls.
They are fucking annoying as hell!!!
Just LOOK at these fucking twats! I'm rooting for the serial killer.

I don't care about the feminist shit, this movie just looks dull. It's got the cinematography and production value of a Netflix Original and just as much thought put towards the writing. The pink and black color scheme makes it look like an ad for Claire's. Even the poster is boring and cheap looking compared to the original.

The original is so unique, atmospheric, and original. I've watched it probably 100 times and still love it. Some films should never be re-made.

Imogen Poots is truly brave to keep that last name. This looks like an ugly dick of a movie.

Why remake the original? It’s pretty much a perfect film. Like r37 said it’s atmospheric. And for me, it conjures up that Christmas feeling even more than many do-called Christmas films. Like that scene where Olivia Hussey opens the door to carollers. The Toronto setting. Just perfect.
And a great cast - Hussey and her luscious locks, Keir Dullea, Martin, Saxon, and scene-stealer Margot Kidder.
Just give us a straight-up slasher/horror film instead of these predictable CGI supernatural lame jump scare movies.

You cannot beat the atmosphere of the original. The glowing blood red wreath is iconic.

R27 they can create illusions all the want, but when it happens in reality they don’t really live up to the fantasy.
