Kings Canyon National Park -- sort of the stepsister to the more well-known Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks. Just as beautiful with a fraction of the crowds.

I was just in Algeria and it really is on par or maybe even exceed the more touristy Morocco. I guess it’s because it’s such a hassle to get a visa. I can’t fathom why they seem to discourage tourism.

Nicaragua has a very very low homicide rate compared to the rest of Latin America and I've heard it is just as beautiful as Costa Rica, but without all the tourists (but also without the tourist infrastructure).

The Outer Hebrides (Scotland)

A couple of years ago I had the pleasure of meeting a friend of mine in Barra, one of the southern most islands. I flew in from Glasgow and landed at the Barra airport, being the only one in the world where scheduled flights use a tidal beach as the runway. My friend is also from the states and we were joined by a her friend, and friend's mother from the isle of Benbecula. The next day we drove, via causeways and ferries, up through the islands to Lewis. What an amazing couple of days. Landscapes and small villages that were remote and charming. The monoliths, around 5,000 year old, on Lewis were fun to explore.

Driving through hundreds of miles of undeveloped Texas scrub at sunrise or sunset is unique and arguably beautiful. The widest skies I’ve ever seen. Not sure “underrated” - more surprising beauty.

Tucson is an underrated US city for tourism, in my opinion. It is the only UNESCO city of gastronomy in the US, it has Saguaro National Park, plenty of art galleries, museums, hiking, hipster stuff and quirky charm.

And if you're lucky, you might see a speeding javelina!
