One hears of Old Guinea even less.

Many different ethnic groups, very poor, and lots of exoticinfectious diseases.

R4 eww. I was talking about the water. I think you're Bryan Singer.

R1, well, there's Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and Equatorial Guinea in Africa, so I guess those are the old Guineas.
New Guinea is the name of the island. The eastern half is the sovereign country of Papua New Guinea. The western half is the Indonesian province of West Papua. There are West Papuan independence groups and occasional protests and ethnic clashes as they consider West Papua under Indonesian military occupation, and the ethnic Malay Indonesian immigrants tend to treat the native Melanesian Papuans unkindly.

There are also French Guiana, Guyana and Suriname.

I’ve heard of it, OP. It’s *you* who hasn’t. Apparently.

The capital - Port Moresby - is known for being one of the most dangerous cities on Earth.
On the other hand, PNG has more indigenous languages than any other country, so at least they have that going for them.

I looked up Papua New Guinea food and it brought up lots of root vegetables (cassava, sweet potatoes, taro, yams).
Also, this dish called mumu.

Is it somewhere Australians vacation?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 24, 2019 10:22 PM |
I read about it some a while back. It doesn't sound like a big tourist destination, mainly jesusy missionary people and ecotourists/science types as there is a lot of rare flora and fauna, especially birds.

Papua New Guinea is home to the Etoro tribe, whose men have a peculiar tradition of drinking the semen of their elders.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 25, 2019 12:29 AM |
What's peculiar about that, R15?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 25, 2019 12:51 AM |
R12, Recipe for Mumu as well as links for popular dishes for every country in the world.

I was mistaken. The western half of New Guinea is comprised of two Indonesian provinces: Papua and West Papua.

Michael Rockefeller, the son of Nelson Rockefeller, disappeared in Papua New Guinea in 1961 and is widely believed to have been eaten by cannibals.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 25, 2019 1:41 AM |
R19, Michael Rockefeller had encountered the Asmat tribe of New Guinea before, hoping to photograph the people and take some of their artifacts for his collection. He returned several years later, but met an unfortunate end. His pontoon had capsized and as he swam to shore, some of the Asmat tribesmen speared and killed him to avenge the Dutch patrol's recent killing of their tribal leaders. They chopped off his head, ate his flesh, purified themselves with his blood, and used his bones for tools.
However, Michael's disappearance resulted in a bunch of white people arriving in jet planes, helicopters, speedboats, etc., in search of Michael, followed by a cholera outbreak that devastated the local populace. The Asmat were terrified and feared that this was retribution for killing the rich, white man. So when documentarians arrived decades later to find out what became of Michael, the Asmat all knew the story but were hesitant to talk about it.

A foreign service friend told me that Port Moresby in PNG is rife with robberies, like bonk you over the head and steal your camera criminality.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 25, 2019 2:47 AM |
Heard it’s beyond dangerous.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | August 25, 2019 2:56 AM |
Does the insular tribe have any problems with inbreeding? Yes occasionally they take/steal children from other tribes.

It doesn't exactly look inviting . . .

I watched a national geographic documentary where PNG people preserve dead bodies of loved ones and visit them up in the mountains once a year

An Aussie acquaintance spent several years with his family in Papua New Guinea working in the Port Moresby branch of ANZ Bank. Every time he was late getting home, his wife would be hysterical, thinking he'd made a wrong turn somewhere and ended up in a Highlander's cooking pot.

I am a former Peace Corps Volunteer. I remember when they stopped sending female volunteers there - they were all getting raped. Incredibly dangerous place - very high rates of sexual assault and intertribal violence.

Shithole island where some ugly cannibals still roam freely.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 25, 2019 9:21 AM |
r29 - serves them right, there is no need for USA interference with traditional societies. BTW, were the 'rapes' with the sheaths on or off?
by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 25, 2019 9:54 AM |
Pretty up in the highlands. Also, extremely dangerous, as a number of commenters have already noted. One of the most violent places on Earth. Not a tourist destination, as rape robbery and murder arent generally sought after tourist experiences. Port Moresby in particular is horrific. You do not go outside alone, and even as a group you do not venture out at night. All expats live in armed compounds behind barbed wire, CCTV etc. Rampant crime and corruption. It is pretty much a failed State. Guy I used to work with worked there for a bit until the work colleague he was travelling with in convoy was hacked to death in front of him one day. He still had PTSD from working there, and sadly turned to drink as a result.

Melanesia and Norway are the 2 places on Earth where the red-hairs gene mutation originates. You see a lot of blond and ginger pikininis.

No one has been there as can be seen by the prior posts about people visiting PNG and the natives.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | August 25, 2019 10:56 PM |
If you really want to visit - read this first
by Anonymous | reply 38 | August 26, 2019 7:52 AM |
And watch this. Parts of it are extremely disturbing and horrifying particularly where the woman describes how she was raped mutilated and tortured
Then decide if you still want to visit....
