Deliverance

I just watched it on Netflix and it holds up very well.

Heartbreaking movie.

by Anonymousreply 1August 17, 2019 5:11 AM

Did the hillfolk conspire to attack those men because they were assholes when they arrived? The group sees the two guys they paid to drive their cars watching them as they leave. Then the inbred kid is standing on a bridge as the men paddle downstream.

by Anonymousreply 2August 17, 2019 5:20 AM

by Anonymousreply 3August 17, 2019 9:06 PM

The movie should be renamed "Adventures in Deplorableville."

by Anonymousreply 4August 17, 2019 9:52 PM

I will play your hole like a banjo string.

by Anonymousreply 5August 17, 2019 10:46 PM

They should have gotten a hot guy to play the rape victim.

by Anonymousreply 6August 25, 2019 2:39 AM

A great film.

It's still unfathomable how John Boorman made a great classic film like this and then went onto make Exorcist II: The Heretic.

by Anonymousreply 7August 25, 2019 2:44 AM

R7, Boorman's best film is Point Blank.

by Anonymousreply 8August 25, 2019 2:51 AM

Yes, Boorman was so erratic. But I thought "The Emerald Forest" was pretty good (another wilderness tale), and "Excalibur" had some fun crazy scenes...

I'd to see a remake with Chris Pine as Ed, Tom Hardy as Lewis, and Jonathan Groff as Bobby.

by Anonymousreply 10August 25, 2019 2:59 AM

The inbred kid is hot as fuck, growing up I had a major crush on him...

by Anonymousreply 11August 25, 2019 3:06 AM

One a drunken friend told me that I reminded him of the indred kid, "Not just your looks, but your personality."

by Anonymousreply 12August 25, 2019 3:08 AM

I attended the University of South Carolina, we make a big deal out of the fact that former United States Poet Laureate James Dickey, was our writer-in-residence for 28 years and wrote the novel on our campus. In fact the spot he wrote most of the novel is now operated as a dining establishment by the School of Hospitality and Tourism.

by Anonymousreply 13August 25, 2019 3:08 AM

Dickey stumbled onto the set drunk and got into a fist fight with John Boorman.

by Anonymousreply 14August 25, 2019 3:09 AM

Was the actor playing the inbred kid really and inbred or just a retarded person ?

by Anonymousreply 15August 25, 2019 3:11 AM

an*

by Anonymousreply 16August 25, 2019 3:11 AM

Dickey had a cameo.

This is him.

R15 He wasn't retarded and couldn't play the banjo.

So I can't remember everything, it's been a while since I 've seen it, but does Jon Voight kill the right guy with the arrow or does it turn out to be someone not involved in the rape/assault?

by Anonymousreply 19August 25, 2019 3:23 AM

It's was the right guy. The movie was unclear on what happened to Drew. I thought he had a heart attack but Lewis insisted that he was shot.

by Anonymousreply 20August 25, 2019 3:25 AM

Yes, the whole Drew thing was confusing also. I need to go rewatch it.

by Anonymousreply 21August 25, 2019 3:26 AM

He now works at Walmart.

A great film- horrible but great

by Anonymousreply 23August 25, 2019 3:47 AM

I'm watching it again now. It does really hold up.

One quibble - I just can't buy that Ed (Jon Voight) could climb up that sheer face rock cliff like he does. Don't get me wrong, it's beautifully filmed, and scares the hell out of me cuz I have vertigo, but I just don't think Ed would have even attempted it much less accomplished it. Voight is fantastic in those scenes, though.

Great movie. Was Drew shot or did he just give up because of the trauma of murder?

by Anonymousreply 24August 28, 2019 6:25 AM

I thought that was the youngest son, Brick, from that television show, The Middle.

by Anonymousreply 25August 28, 2019 7:08 AM

Jon Voight used to be such a good actor - Midnight Cowboy, Deliverance, Coming Home. Shame he became another loon.

by Anonymousreply 26August 28, 2019 7:31 AM

This film would just as well if it were set in the present. Just put some MAGA hats on those hillbillies.

by Anonymousreply 27August 29, 2019 6:35 AM

Do you guys think that killing the hillbilly was self defence? They attacked, raped and threatened them and probably would have killed them later. So I was surprised that they buried him. Why not report what really happened? The men did not live in the area so none of their families, friends or colleagues would ever find out that one was raped. It was also weird that the rapist and his friend were reported missing only a day later. If they were well known in this community why would they rape and potentially kill two tourists? I thought they were both reclusive hillbillies with not much contact to the outside world, but it seems they had families and wives.

by Anonymousreply 28August 29, 2019 8:16 AM

They would never have gotten a fair trial. One of the hillbillies was the deputy sheriff's brother-in-law. Everyone in that town is related.

by Anonymousreply 29August 29, 2019 8:24 AM

Fun fact: I just learned this week that the stereotype of the dumb yokel Southerner is based in reality...poor people in the south didn’t have money for shoes (or didn’t wear them much) and were infected with hookworm, which has major neurological impacts. So entire communities were packed with infected idiots.

by Anonymousreply 30August 29, 2019 8:28 AM

Was this the first male nude scene in a mainstream film?

by Anonymousreply 31August 29, 2019 8:36 AM

Apparently Dickey forced his teenage son to body double for Beatty during the rape scene. Wtf was wrong with Boorman that he allowed that?

by Anonymousreply 32August 29, 2019 8:54 AM

He was a drunk.

by Anonymousreply 33August 29, 2019 9:00 AM

Dickey was a drunk. I don't know about Boorman.

by Anonymousreply 34August 29, 2019 9:00 AM

Really good movie but they lost me when they had the rapist decide to rape a fat pig like Ned Beatty who had zero sex appeal and leave hot Jon Voight tied to a tree. Yeah spare me that rape isn't about sex but since I can't conceive of ever raping someone it was just sex to me.

by Anonymousreply 35August 29, 2019 7:18 PM

He fucked the fat pig bc he was easier to handle. Jon Voight was hotter than Beatty but he would probably have fought back. Also, I doubt the hillbilly was looking for a hot lay. He was horny and just wanted to fuck and humiliate someone - I doubt he cared if the person was male, female, hot, old or ugly.

by Anonymousreply 36August 29, 2019 7:36 PM

The other hillbilly was going to make Ed blow him.

by Anonymousreply 37August 29, 2019 7:40 PM

You need to think more about the purpose of the rape, and a lot of rape in general.

Watch rapey porn if you want to get off. That wasn’t the purpose of the scene.

by Anonymousreply 38August 29, 2019 7:50 PM

Beatty had a beefier butt. I enjoyed the movie, but the book is better.

by Anonymousreply 39August 29, 2019 8:03 PM

What a dreadful article in the OP. I couldn't get through a third of it.

by Anonymousreply 40August 29, 2019 9:36 PM

"One a drunken friend told me that I reminded him of the indred kid, "Not just your looks, but your personality"

I hope you punched and deleted.

by Anonymousreply 41August 29, 2019 9:47 PM

James Dickey played the sheriff at the end of the movie. He was so good I thought he was a professional actor.

What a great film; full of suspense, superb acting, unforgettable theme song ("Dueling Banjos'). And it has one of the greatest movie endings of all time. I thought "Deliverance" was just about a perfect movie.

by Anonymousreply 44August 30, 2019 4:11 AM

The original ending had the sheriff pull a body from the water but we never see the face.

Yes, R2, from my understanding some of the hillfolk were cashiers at the local gas station and Burt Reynolds and Jon Voight didn't respond with proper social cordialities.

by Anonymousreply 47December 10, 2019 2:48 AM

It will be remade with trans persons of color.

For reasons unknown to me at the time, this movie was shown to the entire freshman class in high school a few years after the film came out.
