He is living in a residential suite at a swanky hotel, such as the Plaza or the Pierre. These luxury hotels have apartments, some that can be purchased. Some rich people like the service and amenities available at hotels and prefer living in a hotel.
Nonetheless, it appears he is drinking and doping his way through life.

I wonder what his issue is. He could come out as gay if he wanted to (and indeed is). If he's afraid it would hurt his career, it's not like he's getting roles, anyway.
On the other hand, if someone wants to just lie around a hotel room and eat cake in bed while snorting heroin, fine. I mean, he doesn't have to make anyone happy but himself.

Agree with R36. If it’s pleasurable for him, why would he get a gun and kill himself? Maybe from a Freudian perspective, but it’s usually not an explicit death wish. More of a physical/psychological need. Doesn’t matter if you have $1 or $100 million, anyone can fall prey to addiction.

He was unwatchable on “The Odd Couple” because he had some sort of speech impediment. Like his dentures were slipping. Or maybe he was just drunk.
Anyway, if he’s not harming anyone - and he doesn’t have a wife and kids to worry about - he’s perfectly entitled to live as he likes.

The Friends cast still make over $20 million a year in residuals. That is the most watched show in the world and there isn’t an hour it’s not playing in this world. It plays in hundreds of countries and Netflix to boot.
There’s a reason Netflix paid $100 million to keep it another year, it’s streamed like crazy.
He’s rich. They all are.
And he battled demons since Friends. A big part of his issues post show is failing to find success in any other role. He’s trapped as Chandler Bing for eternity and he knows this. He despises when people call him that.

He was seen walking the streets in a blue t-shirt and grey tracksuit bottoms, covering up slightly with a denim shirt. After the pictures emerged, the Chandler Bing star joked he was heading straight for a pamper day. You can see clearly on his face that he's got some psychological issues going on, it's so bad that he's showing it on his face. He needs to focus on mental health, behavioral health (his substance abuse) is only a part of the problem.
R101 I read somewhere that MP's drug of choice was coke and he'd use it every day for years. What happens with longterm cocaine abusers is that they can develop ischemia and gangrene in the GI tract, and the large intestines can burst from cocaine-induced vasoconstriction which leads to ischemia and then that portion of the affected intestines either become necrotic or hemorrhages. Both can cause bowel perforation. If he's always abusing alcohol concurrently then it augments side effects of ischemia/ bowel obstruction/ hemorrhage. The bowel can perforate from obstruction or dead tissue from ischemia. or become infected with abscesses. The reason why he was in the hospital for so long is because once you get intestinal perforation, you can get life-threatening complications such as sepsis if not treated empirically with antibiotics and surgery.

I worked on "Go On" a few times, and think that his real personality is not that different from the Chandler character. Chandler thought he was above most people, pessimistic, responding cynically and sarcastically most of the time. Not someone who would be described as outgoing and friendly. There were random stories about him being in and out of the hospital for addiction at that time, likely the reason he made attempts at the regularity of series work.

It's weird when sitcom actors want out of a hit show, because it's not like the schedule is hideous. A sitcom is the Hollywood equivalent of a regular job - you work M-F for a few hours and get to go home to your own bed every night. And you don't work all year round either. It's a pretty cushy gig compared to an hour-long series that shoots on location, which is a grueling schedule.

Slightly off topic, but watching reruns of Friends in a waiting room yesterday with the volume too low to hear showed how clownlike and inept these performances were. It’s tough watching these actors aping for the camera, struggling so hard to be campy and cute. They must have been exhausted and wrung out in those last few years. Perry in particular looks almost pained delivering his lines. Yes, they made fortunes, but it must have felt like a devil’s bargain. They all looked like they were about two weeks from crumbling, trying to look and act quirky and cute but filled with cynicism. I think even “great” sitcoms come to that in the end.

I'll admit that I hated Friends with Money and have seen less than 20 episodes in my life. It's one of those shows where I can just feel the smugness through the TV. They all got famous fast and relatively young and starting acting like they were slumming on that show for the rest of its run. Kudrow is the only one who has done anything interesting with her career. A LOT.
The SNL behind the scenes show with Matthew Perry and Sarah Paulson was very creative. I wish it was given a bit more time to lose some of it's Sorkiness. All of his shows take a bit of time for his words to get out the way.
Aniston is of course a wry somewhat funny actress, but her general persona is so jaded and unexcited that I suspect she had a lot of #MeToo moments on her way to success. Something is off with that chick.
David Schwimmer and Courteney Cox have enjoyed their success and money more it seems. They know their limitations.

I think every tv actor has had the delusion that once they leave their hit show, they're going to go on to projects that will be just as big or even bigger. Many of them thought they'd go on to be big in movies. Of course, only a small handful have ever done this. For most tv actors lucky enough to be on one hit show, that's usually it for them.

Friends is 25 years old. A show that paid its cast so well and still earns each of them over $10 million dollars a year is more than enough success. Serious actors would go on to try other things that are not so contingent on mass appeal or huge success. Have any of them done a play? I wouldn't know. But even Julia Roberts tried. The Friend's cast didn't develop this inflated sense of importance all by themselves. Agents and offers do come. But when you've had #1 TV success it seems hard for most to transition to more risky projects. The level of talent is a factor - but seldom discussed openly in those terms. Aniston and Perry tried other things. Kudrow made her money and then let her idiosyncratic talents fly. She's not more noble than the rest, actors all want to perform and be approved of. But she played to her comedic strengths, sense of satire and considerable intelligence. With less success and more acclaim. Some of the other Friends cast didn't have that option. Ha. They live for the applause. I think Perry was wised up long before Friends ended. A former tennis pro always makes a bitter actor.

R236, people like Matthew Perry can smell people like you coming from a thousand feet away. If he wanted to marry some golddigging Russian whore type, he would have. he’s obviously smarter than that. He’s not a moron like Johnny Depp or Mel Gibson. He probably has a couple of discreet whores on the payroll a la Jack Nicholson and they collect their money and go away. He’s sad and lost, but not so bad that he’ll throw it all away on some random.

Thanks R264 and R246! I don't hate successful TV actors but the 6 Friends (like the Big Bang Theory) hit the fucking jackpot. Schwimmer is working as an actor, regardless of the hype of a project. He guested on Will and Grace this last season too. Very cool. He wants to act. Aniston has become insanely rich with a pretty narrow ability - but she is talented and has tried to be adventurous. She couldn't play an ingenue when she was 25, but Frances McDormand could still play one tomorrow.
Perry is what he is, kind of snide and snarky - his own way with a good line reading. There are plenty of worse actors than him working. And he kept trying. I feel bad for him because his schtick is appealing to some people. It never occurred to him that people HATED Chandler and Monica? I guess it has. Over and over.
So this is when you do an about face. You have several hundred million dollars. You're not old and you can't get a job that is worthy of your name. You can still change to a producer or director or just drop out. Start a business AND a charity. Get actually involved in a way that means getting interested. But he's too far addicted maybe. It looks that way. There are other illnesses that plague people where alcohol is just a coping mechanism. What's the difference? He's suffering. But he's rich enough to hide.
by Anonymous | reply 267 | August 11, 2019 2:13 AM

David Schwimmer did the right thing but getting involved in theater projects. Even being worth a couple of hundred million a person still needs to have a focus and be involved.
On the bad side he is responsible for demolishing a historic building on the Lower East Side of Manhattan that was up for landmark status.

R269 I know someone that works 3 jobs to survive and they say while they have it hard, and can say “I wish I were rich”, she knows rich people that are more miserable than her and seem to hate life. She loves life and is the sweetest.

Matthew Perry's family already has their eye on his money, r236, and he is never, ever getting married or having a kid. He has never wanted to do the former and is now probably incapable of doing the latter. The family gets the money when he dies, which is likely not too far off now that he's using again.

There is a big divide between people who live for money, those who sweat for it and those who luck into big bucks. Jennifer fucking Aniston is one of the richest actresses in the world? She hasn't had a bad money day since she was 24 years old. Should she feel guilty? I say YES.
Same as anyone else with over 50 million dollars. The government should tax them at 40% and the individuals should be doing something other than estate planning. I have no doubt that Aniston is charitable. But she's also had a lot of PERFECT houses featured in Architectural Digest.
She was very good in Friends with Money, We're the Millers and Cake. Even that dead dog movie. But is she Julia Roberts? NO. Julia Roberts is a movie fucking STAR!! Jennifer Aniston is lucky and popular enough to keep getting hired. Because any number of other actresses could play ANY of her parts as well. Most often better. Mine is a completely objective opinion.
And Matt Perry is capable of LESS.

R275 Anniston really cleans up with her endorsements too. She appears in several commercials not aired in the American television markets. In addition to those, Aveeno, Eyelove, L'Oréal Elvive, Smarwater/Vitaminwater. In the UK markets, Lynx deo, Emirates Airline, Heineken, and Barclay's/Barclaycard. She's appeared in some perfume adverts too. I think she probably pulls in another 10M annually in these endorsements. The Aveeno acct was thought to be an unheard of sum.

Friends was one case where the female cast had the better careers.
Aniston like mentioned above, had a lot of high profile movies and made bank on them.
Kudow had undoubtedly had the most critically acclaimed career after Friends. I thought she was great in Wondeland, as John Holmes' straight laced first wife Sharon. Strong, subtle work, and very unlike her other roles.
Courteney Cox was in the successful Scream franchise and her show Cougar Town lasted long enough to get into syndication, and was an exec producer so she gets a bigger cut from that.

And she's wry and funny, doesn't take things too seriously and is down to fuck. Loves Margaritas and good dope. She's become a good actress within her range too. She had the good sense to kick Chelsea Handler, John Mayer and Vince Vaughn out of her life. AND she's a 50 year old woman who never wanted KIDS. I suspect she's very cool. Probably a monster.

Jennifer is one smart lady. She didn't legally marry that piece of dried-leather shit and didn't have to give him one cent.
A member of my extended family has been very close to her for years. He plays a major role in her "look". She helped him out when he got addicted to crack, and helped him open his own business. She is a kind person and very generous with her friends. She used to give my family member all these beauty products that were given to her and he would distribute them to his sisters.

R375, hey, was that a real relationship? Did your relative tell you? Jennifer and the leather loving "husband"?

I'm available!

If he just had a wash, an under chin snip, and wore a suit jacket to cover the moobs he might look reasonably decent.

He looks like he's dying.

If he had gastric bypass surgery it will take several months of healing, then he'll be healthier in body and appearance.

Poor guy. An honest to goodness, decent person.

It's just too bad he never met the right girl.
Once he does, he'll surely right himself. And be up and about in a jiffy.

r383 did you read the thread? He had a perforated intestine and was in the hospital for three months.

Kirk Cameron had him killed off of growing pains because he believed Matthew Perry was an agent of Satan.

Poor Matthew! I remember he loved tennis...bet he's wishing he's at the US Open rather than watching on TV. He used to go to the games.

And yet his best friend was named after a tumescent penis?

Endless money, able to drink and drug everyday, all day, with impunity, in a swanky crib...sounds like he's living the dream to me.

Matthew Perry was gorgeous when he was young. But he cannot do love scenes. Not even a kiss. He's terrible at it.
Say what you will about Matt LeBlanc, he can smolder.
Opiates cause constrictures and ulcers. That he is at that terrible end-point in his addiction, and still drinking and/or using drugs is heart-breaking. ALL of the Friends cast love the guy. They speak of him with love and compassion. He has spent so much of his own money trying to help other addicts.....

He's back in LA and ready to party!
“Friends” star Matthew Perry looked disheveled in new photos taken in Los Angeles on Sunday night.
Perry, whose hair was in disarray, was dressed down in dark pants, a white v-neck and an oversized and unbuttoned plaid shirt following a dinner with a mystery woman.
Some rare photos of the 50-year-old actor show him with his arm around the brunette woman and smoking a cigarette.
The actor, who hasn’t been in a role since “The Kennedys After Camelot” and “The Good Fight” in 2017, was most recently spotted in Jennifer Aniston’s Instagram debut pic.
“And now we’re Instagram FRIENDS too,” she captioned the photo of the six real-life pals.
He was also spotted in New York looking run down in July 2019.

Every time I see a "Friend" in the news, I'm hoping that it's an announcement of a tell-all book.
One of these days, someone is going to spill the beans on the insanity that went on behind the scenes. It's too crazy of a story to keep locked away.

He looks pretty average to me. It's not like there is any excuse to dress up or look fancy if you're not going out anywhere.

He could play Joe Scarborough on any of the many days Joe doesn't show up on his own show.

[quote]Although Matthew has been to rehab Opens a New Window. three times, one source claims the actor is still hitting the bottle!
Through all OP's "Opens a New Window" non-sense one is totally enlightening: if I opened a rehab, I would totally name it "Open a New Window Rehabilitation Center". Preferrably in Santa Monica so that Matthew can Opens a New Window say hi! and lounge around in Open a New Window Rehabilitation Center and tell us about all his shenanigans on the set of Open a New Window Friends.
