I worked on "Go On" a few times, and think that his real personality is not that different from the Chandler character. Chandler thought he was above most people, pessimistic, responding cynically and sarcastically most of the time. Not someone who would be described as outgoing and friendly. There were random stories about him being in and out of the hospital for addiction at that time, likely the reason he made attempts at the regularity of series work.

I'll admit that I hated Friends with Money and have seen less than 20 episodes in my life. It's one of those shows where I can just feel the smugness through the TV. They all got famous fast and relatively young and starting acting like they were slumming on that show for the rest of its run.
