London or Paris or Sydney. The others are fug central.

by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 7, 2019 5:10 AM |
Paris is physically beautiful. So yes, maybe the "finest in the world." I love the way its laid out. And to think that all happened in the mid-1800's. But I think the food is overrated, and the people aren't very friendly. Too self involved.
I love London. I prefer it to Paris.
But NYC is my heart.

"At first I assumed the Toronto option said Tokyo, because I couldn't imagine you would leave off fucking Tokyo and why the fuck would Toronto need to be there?"
Because only white people's cities are considered "finest."
by Anonymous | reply 22 | August 7, 2019 2:30 PM |
“Finest” is an odd adjective. Different results than “best” are expected. More like “finest outfit”. Which is why Paris is winning. It’s considered pretty because it’s relatively harmonious and frilly architecture.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 7, 2019 4:31 PM |
Paris is winning because DL posters think it’s fancy and they want to be fancy. I wonder how many of these people have Paris themed decor at home.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 7, 2019 4:42 PM |
Paris is not what it used to be. I was there last year and every goddamn thing to see is under such tight security measures that it's exhausting to visit.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 7, 2019 4:58 PM |
R21, anyone who considers New Yorkers "nicer" must have been abused as a child.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 7, 2019 5:04 PM |
Along with every other major city, Paris has gone down the shitter. Seems dirtier and overcrowded with tourists. Parisans were always rude and vaguely hostile. Now Paris is filled with immigrants from other cultures who act as rude but don’t have the cultural finesse of the French - so you are inundated with just rude without the superficial niceties. During my visit last year, I realized I’m over it. Trains filled with boom boxes and beggars. Tourist sites over run with tourists. Too much hassle to see the same architectural monuments I’ve seen a dozen times. And the hostility of the environment - and increasing dirtiness - make it a really unpleasant experience.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 7, 2019 5:44 PM |
But Paris is so romantic, the Hallmark Channel says so!
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 7, 2019 6:42 PM |
Paris and London are wary, edgy cities these days. Too many recent terror attacks and they've been told to fear another.

by Anonymous | reply 36 | August 8, 2019 3:49 AM |
Been to Paris five times in the last 40 years. Was there eight months ago. It's more gentrified at the center (like so many major cities), but its charm remains. Ignore the trolls who always say "oh, their first album was so much better." A good argument could be made that it is the center of Western Civilization.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | August 8, 2019 3:56 AM |
It's hard to think of anything stupider than the endless city comparison threads on DL.

Have fun in your fine cities, bitches. I’m biking down the California coast with my wig on, playing “Our Love” by Donna Summer on my waterproof speaker for all to hear. London is so populated by foreigners that's it's not an English city anymore. That might be fine for those who like it, but London was so much cooler when it was more English - even in the 90's it had an English feel to it still, but no longer.

Paris and London are so steeped in history but they’re also so over.
Right now the obvious answer is NYC but Shanghai is waiting in the wings. Which is sad because China is a horrible country (I like the Chinese but their country is appalling) and once they are in charge, they won’t be nearly as laissez-faire as the Americans were.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | August 8, 2019 5:59 AM |
I look forward to power being shifted to many other cities around the world. The 19th and 20th century cities are a blip in time - they are always changing.
Just like US - I want to see more '2nd tier' cities become really interesting and cool. There's room for it. But not in NYC, London, Paris or Tokyo. Those are all old-school cities. I want something new.

By fine I mean there should be a certain majesty of architecture, not skimble skamble high rise development, as in somewhere like Bangkok. A recognisable skyline, like London, Paris, NYC, Sydney. Also, a powerful city commercially, not just a cute tourist city like Venice, Florence or Luxor.
Other options: Istanbul, Barcelona

Not to sound like a Boris, but Saint Petersburg has some very fine qualities. The newer Soviet era architecture in some areas of the city ruins it though.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | August 8, 2019 1:22 PM |
The skimble skamble high rise development comment is interesting. I’m sure some of you architecture and design queens on here know how difficult it is to build anything in most U.S. cities, let alone a high rise. I’ve had the City of Los Angeles push back hard on even a 4’ x 8’ booth. Then there was the moratorium on building permits in Hollywood because of these citizen groups. Our cities are anything but random, everything is hyperanaylzed and thought about. Othen, buildings don’t even get built for this reason. Unless you mean something else by skimble skamble (is that a cat from Cats?)

Paris is losing its cachet these days. Dirty and odorous, the police keep having to more migrant camps out from under railroad stations. The bones and outlines of the City of Light are still there if you look for them, but traversing its ordinary streets and transport these days isn't what it once was. The last time I landed at the Gare du Nord the stink of urine was unbelievable.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | August 8, 2019 5:02 PM |

Dublin is horrible by anyone's standards.
It looks like an abandoned mining town in the north of England.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | August 8, 2019 6:21 PM |
R73- thanks. That’s crazy. Dublin is an ugly city. Insane that it is more expensive than Tokyo. I guess being the only major city in the country contributes. But also the minimal high rise construction and poor public transport don’t help. They really need to allow much more construction. It’s not like there is anything much worth preserving there.

I included plenty of US cities already. You only have ten options. The 'skimble skamble' comment referred to out of control high rise development in Asian cities like Bangkok, Cairo and Dubai. You drive through and it's just concrete towers.

Fifty Shades was set in Vancouver, Washington which is much smaller. I'm talking about Vancouver, British Columbia where the Winter Olympics were held, the place that David Duchovny said gets too much rain.
