It was absolute perfection.
I can't think of anything that comes close in recent times - or any times.
I really can't fault it. Can YOU?

Too funny, OP, I read the book last September outside in the fall (in New England)-
I was one of the finest books I have ever read. I love it.
I did see the HBO series/film (before reading the book) and enjoyed it very much.

I tried reading the book, R1, after I saw the series - but it was all sort of broken up into different stories, I just couldn't get into it

Cory Michael Smith is heartbreaking. It’s a crime that he didn’t win an Emmy for his performance.

R2- I took me a little bit to get used to the structure- and Olive is not a prevalent as she is in the series.
But it is a really fine book-

I was looking at him. He's supposed to be a broken man but he had such clear eyes and perfect skin and teeth.
I loved the piano player - singing stuff like The Carpenters all over the place.

The series was incredible. Really difficult subject matter, but beautifully explored. Cory definitely should have been nominated... it's a shame he wasn't.
The piano player was Martha Wainwright, singer of this beautiful song!

I'm just reading this book now!

The sequel book -- Olive, Again -- is also excellent. I really hope they make a miniseries based on that book as well.

The book was much better. I’m sorry but Frances was wrong for the part as written.

R6 I haven't seen this miniseries, but I HAVE had the pleasure of seeing Martha live, having her autograph my copy of that album (this was that tour), and having a round of drinks with her and her boyfriend at IOTA in Arlington, VA. We also saw Keren Ann there twice. Martha is a wonderful lady, and a really cool chick.
I just looked it up, and saw that IOTA has permanently closed (in 2018, it appears). That makes me genuinely sad. I LOVED that place.
