Kelly Mcgillis responds to Top Gun Snub

“I’m old and I’m fat and I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about,” the Top Gun actress, who played the film’s romantic lead across from Tom Cruise, told ET (You can hear audio of her interview in the video on this page.) “I’d much rather feel absolutely secure in my skin and who and what I am at my age, as opposed to placing a value on all that other stuff.” When asked if she’s planning to see the film, McGillis didn’t seem too interested either way. “I’m not racing to the theater, and I’m not racing away from the theater to see it,” she said. “It’s just not on my little list of things that I would like to get done.” And before you ask: no, she hasn’t seen the trailer, either.

Love her!

by Anonymousreply 81August 4, 2019 4:08 PM

Michfest icon.

by Anonymousreply 1July 31, 2019 1:39 AM

Tammy is probably steaming mad and envious that she has the calm confidence to say things like “I’m old and I’m fat...”. He’s trapped in his little closet and struggling to stay relevant and getting plastic surgery and she’s just like “Ehhh... I’m just gonna say the truth over here.”

I kinda love her, too.

by Anonymousreply 2July 31, 2019 2:15 AM

Good for her.

Frankly, it was always strange that they hired an actress who was 5 years older than Cruise AND looked it at the time. Granted, the backstory of the character kind of required her to be a certain age.

by Anonymousreply 3July 31, 2019 2:34 AM

Forgot the link. Sorry

by Anonymousreply 4July 31, 2019 2:36 AM

Good for her, and too bad for Hollywood that it can't appreciate older women who have brains and experience and who frankly do not give a fuck.

by Anonymousreply 5July 31, 2019 2:44 AM

At age 57, Tom Cruise is an aging Peter Pan who is trying to look young forever. Then he stars in action movies to try and prove that he's a real man and sues anyone if they say he's gay.

I'll take Kelly's attitude over his any day.

What a great old broad!

by Anonymousreply 7July 31, 2019 3:00 AM

[quote]’d much rather feel absolutely secure in my skin and who and what I am at my age,

Then why didn't she appear on camera for the interview?

by Anonymousreply 8July 31, 2019 3:02 AM

[quote] Then why didn't she appear on camera for the interview?

Why would she? She clearly doesn’t give a shit about the movie.

by Anonymousreply 9July 31, 2019 3:11 AM

R8 Because she has nothing to prove to snarky, bitchy commentators. No fucks given

by Anonymousreply 10July 31, 2019 3:15 AM

Well, I mean....I'm sure she looks fine for her age, but let's be honest, it would be a little jarring for her to appear in the movie, given how smoking hot she was in the original. Sorry!

by Anonymousreply 11July 31, 2019 3:17 AM

It would be awkward for Tom, who thinks he looks exactly the same as he did in the original movie.

by Anonymousreply 12July 31, 2019 3:21 AM

R12 Exactly! This a movie to show us how timeless and youthful Tom Fucking Cruise is! He is the male Norma Desmond. He is the Madonna of actors!

by Anonymousreply 13July 31, 2019 3:26 AM

Tom Cruise didn’t invent the “old guy with hot young chick” trope in TV and movies. He’s just making millions and millions of dollars off of it.

I’m glad Kelly is happy but can she pay her bills?

by Anonymousreply 14July 31, 2019 3:29 AM

How does she support herself?

by Anonymousreply 15July 31, 2019 3:30 AM

Honesty. With her statement she puts this new movie into its place.

by Anonymousreply 16July 31, 2019 3:34 AM

R15 she has worked, married her partner at some point.

by Anonymousreply 17July 31, 2019 3:48 AM

The frau-lovers are out tonight.

It'd be weird to see a powerful man with an old lady.

by Anonymousreply 23July 31, 2019 6:06 AM

She should’ve added, “Now if it were a sequel to Witness - I’d be offended!”

by Anonymousreply 24July 31, 2019 7:12 AM

Erm, R20? I think you’ll find that’s Martin Short.

by Anonymousreply 25July 31, 2019 7:14 AM

I have to agree with R11, what were they going to do? Wheel her out of the shadows, have her extend her claw and go, “Mav...er - Rick?!” Kelly McGillis wasn’t exactly out and proud in the ‘80s and was as big of a closet case as Tammy Cruise.

If she doesn’t fit in this milieu any longer - and it’s a very strange one, to be sure - it has just as much to do with how she presented herself at the time and who she is now. She was uncomfortable being a Hollywood actress at the time and she’s much more comfortable with herself now. Doesn’t mean they have to shoehorn her in to this freak show.

by Anonymousreply 26July 31, 2019 7:20 AM

i like her candor.

by Anonymousreply 27July 31, 2019 7:24 AM

I totally agree with her, but I also just can't imagine them as a couple now or having a hot sex scene in the movie. Dilemma.

by Anonymousreply 28July 31, 2019 11:23 AM

It wouldn’t make sense that Maverick was with the same woman now anyway. She was a summer fling.

by Anonymousreply 29July 31, 2019 12:04 PM

clam Tommy was never going to bring in a former on screen love interest where the audience could think 'isn't that actress a lesbian?'

by Anonymousreply 30July 31, 2019 12:18 PM

It's her weight more than anything else. She still has the incredible facial structure, with the right hair and makeup she'd look older but still beautiful. She let herself go (by Hollywood standards, anyway), and now she complains?

by Anonymousreply 31July 31, 2019 1:37 PM

Why would she need to ge his love interest in the film? Would be great if she were his boss or in some other senior position. I’d love it if they made her a late in life lesbian!

People change, I ran into an old boyfriend from 25 years ago. He’s now old and fat (but happy), we had a nice chat.

by Anonymousreply 32July 31, 2019 1:39 PM

I agree, R32, her character could have been reinvented as a badass lesbian, would've been fun. But again, the weight was a problem.

by Anonymousreply 33July 31, 2019 1:45 PM

[quote] At age 57, Tom Cruise is an aging Peter Pan who is trying to look young forever. Then he stars in action movies to try and prove that he's a real man and sues anyone if they say he's gay.

What is he supposed to do, get fat and stop working? I admire his dedication and work ethic. It is not easy to be physically fit at 57. It requires deprivation and punishment.

Not so crazy about the Scientology.

by Anonymousreply 34July 31, 2019 1:58 PM

Old fat actresses appear in movies all the time. Even some action ones, thought they don't do the action bits.

by Anonymousreply 35July 31, 2019 2:09 PM

^^ Dame Judi Dench. Old and fat but still fabulous as "M".

Problem with McGillis is that most remember her as the hot love interest in Top Gun not a fat superior.

by Anonymousreply 36July 31, 2019 2:17 PM

And she was off the charts hot, so incredibly gorgeous. Everybody back then was calling her the new Grace Kelly. None of us can hold onto that kind of youthful beauty, but you can’t fall too far and expect to be cast in a huge movie.

by Anonymousreply 37July 31, 2019 2:29 PM

R25 LMAO! No, that is not Martin Short. R31 I don't hear her complaining at all. In fact, just the opposite.

by Anonymousreply 38July 31, 2019 2:31 PM

R32: Maybe some other time, Blanche.

by Anonymousreply 40July 31, 2019 2:36 PM

Tom and Val (in trunks) doing a volleyball scene in the present is the only reason I would see this movie.

In the 80s, you knew kelly would grow into those shoulders just like Kathleen Turner grew into hers.

by Anonymousreply 41July 31, 2019 2:43 PM

I guess Val lost all his weight to be in this film. Wonder how big or small his part will be?

by Anonymousreply 42July 31, 2019 3:00 PM

I totally forgot Val had throat cancer. Can he speak properly now?? This clip is so painful to see (and hear.)

Kathy Bates is old and fat (though not as fat as she used to be). Of course she's a damn good actress. More so than Kelly ever was who, let's face it, only ever got cast for her looks first, acting talent second.

Hopefully this will result in her getting some better roles instead of the Syfy Channel shit with giant crocodiles she's done lately. Maybe she do some Hallmark movie or series. They love has-beens (they're cheap) and she looks real.

by Anonymousreply 47July 31, 2019 4:04 PM

There was always a rumor that she and Jodie foster had an affair while making "The Accused", and that one day Whitney Houston showed up on set and got into a fist fight with one or both of them. Was one of them dating Whitney prior to the affair? (I thought Whitney began dating her real partner in her teens.)

by Anonymousreply 48July 31, 2019 4:32 PM

No one is going to see a Top Gun sequel. lmao

by Anonymousreply 49July 31, 2019 4:41 PM

R49 You would think, right?? I won't be seeing it, I HATED the first one and it's equally shitty soundtrack, but a lot of dudes are fucking NUT JOBS about this movie, young and old alike.

by Anonymousreply 50July 31, 2019 4:57 PM

At least they've cast Jennifer Connelly as Cruise's apparently love interest and she's semi-age appropriate.

by Anonymousreply 51July 31, 2019 5:19 PM

I'm assuming Meg Ryan has a big role in this new film?

by Anonymousreply 52July 31, 2019 5:21 PM

R52, she was, but she demanded a separate trailer for her new lips.

by Anonymousreply 53July 31, 2019 5:26 PM

The question is why they waited 33 years to do a sequel?!

by Anonymousreply 54July 31, 2019 11:38 PM

R54 Because Tommy wants another big movie hit.

by Anonymousreply 55July 31, 2019 11:49 PM

I didn’t hear complaining just stating facts. She said “I’m old and fat” and it’s quite refreshing.

by Anonymousreply 62August 1, 2019 12:39 AM

She was every dyke's dream in the 80s.

by Anonymousreply 63August 1, 2019 12:43 AM

She’s pretty much known for three films:

Witness Top Gun The Accused

Her entire relevant filmography in five words and an article.

by Anonymousreply 64August 1, 2019 12:46 AM

*four words

by Anonymousreply 65August 1, 2019 12:47 AM

She has a lot of skin to be happy in.

by Anonymousreply 66August 1, 2019 12:47 AM

Despite the incredible bro popularity of the original, I’ll bet a lot of guys will avoid this because they don’t want to spoil the appeal of the first one.

Plus, the first one is known for all of the exciting, real aerial photography. Don’t know if this one delivers on that scale. The sequel is definitely an old white guy movie. No other demographic for it.

by Anonymousreply 67August 1, 2019 12:49 AM

Chief Nursing Administrator Kelly McGillis at every hospital in the US circa 1990

by Anonymousreply 68August 1, 2019 12:51 AM

by Anonymousreply 69August 1, 2019 1:10 AM

Hey, she was in three films that were well loved and went on to be classics or at least cult classics. They air all the time on TV to this day. That's a better career than a lot of people.

by Anonymousreply 71August 1, 2019 1:53 AM

How in the world was Val Kilmer able to participate in a Top Gun sequel?

by Anonymousreply 75August 1, 2019 9:53 AM

She was, R46! Alas, the film was shit.

by Anonymousreply 76August 1, 2019 10:44 AM

A friend of mine told me that they had to use glycerin drops to make fake tears for Meg Ryan because she couldn’t muster up real ones for that scene. Not sure if it’s true, but she knew a lot of showbiz people back in the day.

by Anonymousreply 77August 1, 2019 2:21 PM

Holy shit, Val is unintelligible. Is he long for this world? Did he have a tracheotomy?

by Anonymousreply 78August 3, 2019 1:54 AM

Is Val's appearance strictly a non-speaking cameo or are they dubbing him? I had no idea it was that bad. Poor guy.

by Anonymousreply 79August 3, 2019 7:41 PM

Lov that she has the balls to go there. She looks good and she’s right, her personal peace, sobriety and happiness are of most importance.

by Anonymousreply 80August 3, 2019 7:53 PM
