Do you like The Three Stooges?

My local station is having a marathon today. That shit is funny.

by Anonymousreply 82July 7, 2019 1:52 PM

NO!!! violent and stupid

by Anonymousreply 1July 5, 2019 7:37 PM

Yes. When I was five.

by Anonymousreply 2July 5, 2019 7:43 PM

I loved them when I was a kid. As I grew older I learned that it seemed to definitely be a male thing though. Guys loved them, females could not understand the appeal and saw only the idiocy of them. Which was, of course, the whole point of them.

Huge fan of Curly, Shep wasn't bad - but the other replacements were just awful.

by Anonymousreply 3July 5, 2019 7:50 PM

I love their little-seen hardcore gay porn film they released in the Thirties, "Homoerotic is the Word for Curly."

by Anonymousreply 4July 5, 2019 7:56 PM

hated it

by Anonymousreply 5July 5, 2019 7:59 PM

When I was a kid in New York, Officer Joe Bolton would show Three Stooges movies on his channel 11 TV show. After, the Stooges would be sitting in the studio. I was thrilled! I was too young to recognize they weren't all of the originals.

by Anonymousreply 6July 5, 2019 8:05 PM

No, not even when I was a kid.

by Anonymousreply 7July 5, 2019 8:24 PM

Some of them are quite funny, but you have to be in the right mood. I think the earlier ones are the best, and I always liked their WWII parodies with Moe as Hitler and Curly as Goering.

by Anonymousreply 8July 5, 2019 8:42 PM

Yes! And I loved their pie fights. And their pies were real baked ones.

by Anonymousreply 9July 5, 2019 8:47 PM

I thought it was so stupid. But my grandfather was good friends with Spanky. They went to high school together.

by Anonymousreply 10July 5, 2019 8:52 PM

Love the Stooges. Grew up on them. I met Moe back in 1971 in L.A.. Couldn't have been more than 5' tall. Practically a dwarf. But such a sweet gentleman.

by Anonymousreply 11July 5, 2019 8:58 PM

r10: Spanky was one of the "Our Gang" - "Little Rascals" kids, not Three Stooges. The "Our Gangs" were funnier without Alfalfa and Darla and the silent "Our Gang" films are the funniest of all.

Hated the Stooges as much as I hated Abbot & Costello.

by Anonymousreply 12July 5, 2019 9:09 PM

Shemp - ugh......

by Anonymousreply 13July 5, 2019 9:17 PM

OMG, my huge mistake!! R10. Haha.

by Anonymousreply 14July 5, 2019 9:17 PM

No problem, r10! :-)

by Anonymousreply 15July 5, 2019 9:22 PM

R13, Shemp appeared in other things besides the Stooges, he's the bartender at the Black Pussy Cafe in WC Field's Bank Dick.

OP lucky you. Just out of curiosity, what local station are you watching them on?

I live in DC and watched the Three Stooges in the 1970s as a child. Also, I went to Three Stooges conventions in Philadelphia in the 1980s. Now, in my old age, the Three Stooges are on Saturday nights @ 6pm on MeTV.

I have an acquaintance who thinks "Dewey Cheatham & Howe" is literally the most hysterically funny thing he's ever heard in his life, the poor dear.

by Anonymousreply 18July 5, 2019 9:45 PM

Never like the Stooges, but the old Abbott and Costello movies were fun, as well as the old Road To... movies.

by Anonymousreply 19July 5, 2019 9:48 PM

Poor Curly (Moe & Shemp's brother) had a hard life. 2 big strokes in his early 40s and pretty much a basket case afterward until he died at 48.

by Anonymousreply 20July 5, 2019 10:05 PM

Love Abbott and Costello. Here they are with Shemp.

IFC also shows the Stooges films, usually early in the mornings on a Saturday.

by Anonymousreply 22July 5, 2019 10:14 PM

Christine McIntyre RULES

You should google Columbia Shorts for all the different ones there are. She was in most of the solo shorts with just Joe Besser, Jo DeRita, Harry Von Zell, even Billie Burke made a Columbia short.

I always liked this one where Shemp is a voice teacher and his student (Dee Green) is wonderfully gormless. He is set to inherit a lot of money but has to marry with 24 hours. It's similar in theme to Buster Keaton's Seven Chances, where he has to marry in order to inherit.

Yes, R24! That was a great one.

I have a bunch of their DVD collections, and watch them all the time!

So, there were six actual stooges, right? But Moe and Larry were constants. I think Shemp was an original stooge, replaced by Curly, then came back when Curly died.

by Anonymousreply 35July 6, 2019 2:34 AM

HATE HATE HATE Laurel and Hardy. The Stooges were masterful by comparison.

by Anonymousreply 36July 6, 2019 2:36 AM

It's amazing how racist these shows were. Every Black person is a bug eyed cook or a sassy maid. And nobody said anything about it. Darkie was very freely used as was colored.

by Anonymousreply 37July 6, 2019 3:10 AM

"It's amazing how racist these shows were. "

Do you know when they were made? That's the way things were then. Racial stereotypes were considered funny. At any rate, I like the Three Stooges. They were classic slapstick comedians.

by Anonymousreply 38July 6, 2019 3:15 AM

Mantan Moreland was considered to become the 3rd Stooge after the Shemp died. They went with Joe Besser, but Mantan would have been great. I love these shows, just mindless fun. And yes, the unPC stuff is still funny.

by Anonymousreply 39July 6, 2019 3:31 AM

Loved the Stooges, and Abbott & Costello. I used to watch A&C on WPIX NYC channel 11 on Saturday mornings. This was before cable and the reception in Connecticut was always iffy. Lots of snow but I didn’t let me stop me.

by Anonymousreply 40July 6, 2019 4:39 AM

R32 that's one of my favorite Stooges movies.

I love that scene because Curly knocks out all of Moe's fighters, yet Moe just shakes off the punch and is still standing.

by Anonymousreply 49July 6, 2019 1:31 PM

If you don't love at least one Three Stooges movie then ther's something wrong with you.

by Anonymousreply 50July 6, 2019 1:32 PM

R37 the Stooges rarely had gross racial stereotypes in their films. Everyone in their films was a buffoon and what you consider racism is broad slapstick comedy that was funny then and is still funny today.

It's not so much racism as stereotypes. The man who played Buckwheat, Billie Thomas said Hal Roach was color blind. He said, sure the blacks acted one way, but they also had the rich kid, ,the fat kid, the sissy kid, the bully kid and so on. Every kid was stereotyped in someway.

by Anonymousreply 55July 6, 2019 1:39 PM

Yes R55 and I remember the film where Buckwheat is working in a kitchen and when he wipes the sweat from his forehead it's black.

What I also remember is Stymie and Buckwheat being friends with all the kids--male, female, white--and they were all treated equal in their group.

I wish people would look at these old movies with that in mind, all the characters being equal, before complaining about racism.

One thing I noticed about Stooges movies even as a kid, they never referred to a black character as "boy", something that was very common in movies from that time period.

by Anonymousreply 56July 6, 2019 1:48 PM

Most people viewing this today would cry racism, but it's far too innocent to be racist. Plus, it's funny as hell.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 57July 6, 2019 1:51 PM

Here's the sweat scene and it was Stymie, not Buckwheat. The whole movie is just too funny and frankly, sweet, to be viewed as racist.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 58July 6, 2019 1:54 PM

The problem with everyone's favorite Buckwheat is that he was cute, but very young (4) and not an actor. The black actors before him - Stymie and Farina, were much better. I know they didn't hire very experienced kid actors for the Little Rascals, but Buckwheat was just lousy lousy lousy compared to the others.

by Anonymousreply 59July 6, 2019 2:00 PM

The Three Stooges off camera.

Stymie: "Hey Buckwheat you all's getting kinda fat aintcha?"

Spanky in Buckwheat Drag and Blackface: "Yes, sir... I's been eating a lot of poke chops."

I don't care how racist it is, by today's standards. But that is some funny shit.

by Anonymousreply 61July 6, 2019 4:15 PM

I was never into the Stooges but I have watched a few of their short clips.

HUGE A&C fan!! Became a fan back when independent TV stations would show A&C movies on weekend afternoons in the seventies.

A&C Meet Frankenstein is my third favorite movie of all time.

I saw the Three Stooges Meet Snow White when I was a kid in the 1960s.

by Anonymousreply 63July 6, 2019 4:49 PM

My Father and I were never really close when I was growing up. He liked sports, especially football, and hunting and fishing and I liked to stay in my room and read and watch soap operas. The one thing we always bonded over was The Three Stooges. Every Sunday morning from 10:00 am until Noon on Channel 5. He had to go outside and turn the antenna (I grew up in a rural area that didn't get cable) to get Channel 5 and I would run to the door and yell, it's clear. And that was basically our church and bonding time every Sunday. He never understood me and quite frankly I never really understood him, but we both laughed our asses off for those two hours each week. So I have a special place in my heart for The Three Stooges. Now you all can call me Mary!

by Anonymousreply 64July 6, 2019 4:52 PM

I find them fucking hilarious. It also is a guy thing that was mentioned above. For some reason the guys I know from Chicago can recite scenes. They love them too.

by Anonymousreply 65July 6, 2019 5:08 PM

[quote]A&C Meet Frankenstein is my third favorite movie of all time.

I love that movie. When the Frankenstein monster sees Lou's face and recoils in horror, kills me every time.

by Anonymousreply 66July 6, 2019 5:16 PM

What I love about the clip I posted at #57 is none of the kids are concerned that imposter Buckwheat is pushing a baby stroller with a doll or that he's playing with a white girl.

Hal Roach really presented an idealized view of what America should have been like.

Eighty years later we're no closer to that.

by Anonymousreply 67July 6, 2019 5:28 PM

Yea thanks R15 I know Shemp did a lot of other things.....I don't like him in them either.

by Anonymousreply 68July 6, 2019 7:09 PM

"Buckwheat is pushing a baby stroller with a doll"

R67, the Buckwheat character was originally a girl, and originally played by a girl - she was Stymie's sister. When Billie Thomas started playing Buckwheat, she was still a girl, then transitioned into a boy character.

by Anonymousreply 69July 6, 2019 7:31 PM

Originally yes R69, but by this time, and in this movie, the Buckwheat character was a boy not a girl.

by Anonymousreply 70July 6, 2019 7:36 PM

[quote]A&C Meet Frankenstein is my third favorite movie of all time."

Lon Chaney Jr: "I know you'll think I'm crazy, but in a half-an-hour the moon will rise and I'll turn into a wolf."

by Anonymousreply 71July 6, 2019 7:38 PM

Notice the dress? He was a girl at the time of that movie R70.

by Anonymousreply 72July 6, 2019 7:38 PM

Ok, you're right. The Billie Thomas Buckwheat was turned into a boy in 1936. That clip is from '35.

However, the Billie Thomas Buckwheat kept the girl costume even when the character became a boy.

Lucille Ball denied in an interview with Dick Cavett that she ever appeared in a Three Stooges short - Dick flashed the picture shown above and Lucy replied: "Well.....I don't remember it...."

by Anonymousreply 78July 6, 2019 10:30 PM

Utterly charming. The children are allowed to act in their own way, the way children play act.

by Anonymousreply 79July 6, 2019 11:55 PM

I like the last one, where Larry says: "You know Moe, you poking me in the eyes and hitting me on the head and tearing out my hair really hurts. I believe it's the reason both Shemp and Curly had strokes and I think you should stop it."

Then Moe says: "You're right" and then shoots Larry.
