July 4 - let Menu du Picnic discussion

Ok faggy foodies - my husband and I are going to a picnic at my brother’s tomorrow where he will serve Popeyes chicken and side dishes.

Don’t mock - I love my brother and he’s a good dad.

So I’m trying to figure out what I can bring to help out and provide some better food that still fits in with the rest of the meal and can easily be eaten at a picnic.

I should mention that he and my SIL have three boys: a10 yo and twin 8yos.

I’m thinking I’ll bring:

1) pimento cheese sandwiches on sliced whole meal bread

2) cherry tomato, watermelon and mozzarella skewers

3) cucumber “boats” filled with herby tuna salad

4) fresh strawberries from the farmers market

5) homemade cookies

Waddya think?

by Anonymousreply 55July 5, 2019 2:22 AM

Sounds fine, OP.

by Anonymousreply 1July 3, 2019 8:33 AM

No mac and cheese, OP?

by Anonymousreply 2July 3, 2019 8:33 AM

Honestly, I’d put the pimento cheese on white bread.

Will the watermelon be mixed on a skewer w/tomato and mozzarella cheese? I would separate it.

What kind of cookies?

by Anonymousreply 3July 3, 2019 8:40 AM

Mallomars. Everyone loves Mallomars.

by Anonymousreply 4July 3, 2019 8:45 AM

R3

I may do good white bread for the sandwiches, but the bakery I go to often has a really fantastic whole meal bread that is GREAT with cheese

Yeah - the watermelon will be on the skewers with the tomato and mozzarella - it’s a really great flavor combo, I think

I will either make red white and blue frosted star cookies, or just make snickerdoodles, depending on how much time I have.

by Anonymousreply 5July 3, 2019 8:46 AM

Oh, and I’m going to be wearing a large Uncle Sam hat made ENTIRELY out of mallomars

by Anonymousreply 6July 3, 2019 8:47 AM

You hat gonna melt.

by Anonymousreply 7July 3, 2019 8:51 AM

What about strawberry shortcake, OP? If it’s hot weather, you might need to stabilize your whipped cream.

by Anonymousreply 8July 3, 2019 8:54 AM

[quote]3) cucumber “boats” filled with herby tuna salad

I think that since there's kind of a lack of any dark green vegetables you might want to sub a spinach salad for this. You can even incorporate the strawberries into the salad. It would help to cut through the greasy part of the meal too (the chicken). But I don't know how long it would keep in the heat; unless everyone will be eating it soon after if were served it might not be the greatest idea.. Regardless I would make a dark green leafy salad or vegetable rich salad as opposed to the tuna salad. Most of the sides that come with fried chicken are all starchy and there's already a bucket-load of protein (the chicken).

by Anonymousreply 9July 3, 2019 9:10 AM

Gin

by Anonymousreply 10July 3, 2019 10:08 AM

You're going to brink ALL that? Lunatic! Your brother is a saint to invite you. And don't call me faggot.

by Anonymousreply 11July 3, 2019 11:49 AM

Ambrosia. You have to bring ambrosia to a Fourth of July picnic...

by Anonymousreply 12July 3, 2019 11:52 AM

I've never heard an American use the term "whole meal."

by Anonymousreply 13July 3, 2019 3:58 PM

No rightminded person would ever mock Popeye’s! I think any fresh fruit and veggies would be perfect because all the fried goods will be taken care of.

by Anonymousreply 14July 3, 2019 4:01 PM

It’s because I’m an insufferable Anglophilic prisspot R13.

by Anonymousreply 15July 3, 2019 4:06 PM

I prefer a watermelon salad with feta. No tuna on a hot day. Peach cobbler? Onion dip and Ruffles?

by Anonymousreply 16July 3, 2019 4:09 PM

the skewers sound boring. Do watermelon cube, cube of feta and a leaf of fresh mint, repeat.

by Anonymousreply 17July 3, 2019 4:27 PM

They're for kids: serve the watermelon separately. Don't pair something really soft with something with tough skin and then something that takes effort to bite through all on one stick.

by Anonymousreply 18July 3, 2019 4:40 PM

No kid is going to want to eat cheese and watermelon together.

by Anonymousreply 19July 3, 2019 4:50 PM

[quote] Anglophilic

That explains the bloody vegetable bloody boats.

by Anonymousreply 20July 3, 2019 4:57 PM

good catch R13 , but OP quickly got out from under it with snappy self deprecation.

by Anonymousreply 21July 3, 2019 4:57 PM

@R16 Watermelon, feta with chopped mint is amazing!

by Anonymousreply 22July 3, 2019 4:59 PM

Popeyes is the Hermes of fried chicken. No need to add vegetarian tinsel.

by Anonymousreply 23July 3, 2019 5:15 PM

[quote]It’s because I’m an insufferable Anglophilic prisspot [R13].

I'll let it slide this time. But you'd better not be pronouncing the "h" in "herby."

by Anonymousreply 24July 3, 2019 10:38 PM

Watermelon/Blueberry salad. Simple, healthy, everyone seems to love it.

by Anonymousreply 25July 3, 2019 10:43 PM

Sorry-let me try the link again.

The watermelon skewers sound foul. The rest sound good.

by Anonymousreply 27July 3, 2019 11:01 PM

Don't be Uncle Prisspot OP

Your brother is getting the Popeyes because kids FUCKING LOVE POPEYES.

You are not going to change them and they are likely looking forward in anticipation to eating the Popeyes

Rather than show off what an out of touch prisspot you are, buy some cupcakes (or make them if you can make the sort of cupcakes KIDS like, e.g. lots of chocolate and gooey stuff) and bring some cut up watermelon cubes and some toothpicks to eat them with if you want. Brownies or giant chocolate chip cookies work too (use M&Ms for chips) if cupcakes are not your jam.

You will thank me.

by Anonymousreply 28July 3, 2019 11:07 PM

Just slice the watermelon like a normal person.

Nice queened up menu.

by Anonymousreply 30July 3, 2019 11:55 PM

I'm here to tell R9 and everybody else that leafy green salads suck and nobody wants them at a party.

by Anonymousreply 31July 4, 2019 12:00 AM

Ah, but gazpacho !

by Anonymousreply 32July 4, 2019 12:09 AM

I have to agree with R28 . OP is fighting the tide. OP can save her/his "Menu du Picnic" for another time. Bring a dessert (chocolate chip cookies or cupcakes) and some sliced watermelon and call it a day.

Also, is OP a woman or a man? Not sure it's cool to address people as "faggy foodies."

by Anonymousreply 33July 4, 2019 12:48 AM

[quote]Ah, but gazpacho !

I detest raw tomatoes, but for some reason I adore gazpacho. I'm going to try making it this week. It's hard to find it ready-made in stores--Trader Joe's use to have a decent one in the summer months, but I haven't seen it in years. Does anyone have a good recipe?

by Anonymousreply 34July 4, 2019 1:38 AM

Agree with the watermelon cubes and feta with mint. Amazing on a hot day.

by Anonymousreply 35July 4, 2019 2:03 AM

R34, I can't agree more!! Weird. But gazpacho seems a weird, complicated dish midsummer.

by Anonymousreply 36July 4, 2019 2:04 AM

Wait til next month to make gazpacho, when tomatoes will be at their peak.

by Anonymousreply 37July 4, 2019 4:19 AM

Sounds yummy. I haven’t thought of pimento cheese in a million years. I will now have to rack some down…lol

by Anonymousreply 38July 4, 2019 4:22 AM

You festering wad of vile gay bitches.

Nobody wants feta in their watermelon. Leave it alone.

And gazpacho. They will laugh you and your tomato-stained caftan OFF the party.

by Anonymousreply 39July 4, 2019 4:49 AM

R33 - i’m a man

So’s my husband

(We’re gay)

Sorry everybody, I shouldn’t have said f***y foodies.

Also, for the record, I got lazy and didn’t bring anything to the picnic - luckily, there were taco trucks nearby.

by Anonymousreply 40July 4, 2019 6:02 AM

This didn't happen

by Anonymousreply 41July 4, 2019 12:04 PM

You had a 3rd of July picnic?

by Anonymousreply 42July 4, 2019 12:09 PM

Tomorrow THE CHRISTMAS SEASON BEGINS!!!

by Anonymousreply 43July 4, 2019 8:59 PM

R43 No ... not until July 12.

QVC has its Christmas in July sale going. July 4th is probably the crossing line into the Christmas season.

This is going to turn into a fussy nightmare where OP storms out sobbing because none of the kids liked her fucking cucumber boats with tuna salad.

by Anonymousreply 46July 4, 2019 10:23 PM

Who would want tuna salad outdoors in this heat, boats or no boats?

by Anonymousreply 47July 4, 2019 10:25 PM

When i think family 4th picnic crowd pleaser, I think seafood ceviche in martini glasses!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 48July 4, 2019 10:28 PM

Honestly, I'm just shocked that I didn't see "Demi-glace" anywhere in OP's post.

by Anonymousreply 49July 4, 2019 10:29 PM

Who in North America says "whole meal?"

by Anonymousreply 50July 4, 2019 11:24 PM

I do, r50, when I consume a whole meal, i.e., appetizer, main w/veg or salad, dessert. Admittedly, it's not very often when I have a whole meal, but when I do, that's what I call it.

by Anonymousreply 51July 4, 2019 11:29 PM

I say fuck 'em and bring paper products.

by Anonymousreply 52July 4, 2019 11:32 PM

r50, see r13 and r15 and try to keep up.

by Anonymousreply 53July 5, 2019 2:01 AM

If you must have tuna, you should run in through the meat grinder with clam juice and peanut butter.

by Anonymousreply 54July 5, 2019 2:02 AM

I don’t think kids would want watermelon touching the mozzarella. My SIL makes a watermelon, feta and mint salad and the kids won’t touch it. It’s more of a grownup thing. Also, the kids I know don’t generally eat sandwiches the way we used to. It’s weird.

Otherwise, your ideas sound very nice.
