What are your memories of this classic?

I dig Mickey Thomas’s tight jeans.

by Anonymousreply 1June 21, 2019 10:50 PM

HOL-LY-WOOD!

by Anonymousreply 2June 21, 2019 10:59 PM

God, I used to hate that song and everything from Starship. I was a teen and had no idea of their past and only thought they were the worst kind of AOR and easy listening music around, and it was only much later that I'd find out Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship used to be something special. That said there's no denying Starship's hits were pretty catchy even though I hated liking them.

by Anonymousreply 3June 21, 2019 11:00 PM

Kill yourself OP. You have the worst taste.

by Anonymousreply 4June 21, 2019 11:18 PM

I was gonna comment but I got stopped.

by Anonymousreply 5June 21, 2019 11:28 PM

I guess Grace had flown the Starship coop when the song was Oscar nominated. She didn’t perform it on the Oscars in 1988. Gloria Estefan of all people filled in.

by Anonymousreply 6June 21, 2019 11:34 PM

Great song from a great movie

by Anonymousreply 7June 21, 2019 11:37 PM

The song is fucking GREAT. The video is very 80s movies. What's not to love?

by Anonymousreply 8June 22, 2019 1:12 PM

They only good song of theirs is

Regarding the video, I prefer the Kristin Wiig/Bill Hader version .

Any Mickey Thomas gossip?

by Anonymousreply 11June 22, 2019 3:39 PM

Grace Slick looked rather dykey in the mid 80s.

by Anonymousreply 12June 22, 2019 4:05 PM

Lord, the 80s is the cheesiest decade of all for movies, and for music like this.

by Anonymousreply 13June 22, 2019 4:51 PM

The song was better than the video. And the video for “We Built This City” is better than the song

by Anonymousreply 14June 22, 2019 4:53 PM

Outside of perhaps a few exceptions I'm not a fan of Starship stuff, but Mickey Thomas' voice elevated the quality of any song he sang on. He's that good. Starship would have ended as a band without hm. It's too bad he didn't do that much outside of the Starship band. I would love to hear him sing better songs instead of the MOR corporate rock drivel.

by Anonymousreply 15July 2, 2020 4:21 PM

Stop it, OP, you're EMBARRASSING ME.

by Anonymousreply 16July 2, 2020 4:24 PM

We built this shitty

We built this shitty on rock and roll

by Anonymousreply 17July 2, 2020 4:24 PM

R9, that’s such a psycho song, which I still like, actually.

Question: why do men say women are playing hard to get, when all they ask is that men be gentlemen, and actually ask the girl out, like they used to?

Am I unreasonably old fashioned about this??? Tops, did you ask your perma-bottoms out first, or was it the other way around?

Still their best 👇🏽

"Sara" was a guilty pleasure of mine.

by Anonymousreply 20July 2, 2020 5:29 PM

Sara was one of the few decent Starship songs.

by Anonymousreply 21July 2, 2020 6:41 PM

One only needs to view this live video clip of Mickey Thomas singing lead for Elvin Bishop on The Midnight Special in 1976 to understand what a talent his is.

Hated it so very very much back then, and it's even worse now.

by Anonymousreply 23July 2, 2020 8:17 PM

Fine, R23. Why don't get back to listening to Rain on Me. That's MUCH better.

by Anonymousreply 24July 3, 2020 2:38 AM

it is nauseating to think that the band that made Surrealistic Pillow somehow morphed into THAT.

by Anonymousreply 25July 3, 2020 2:47 AM

r10 Thanks for posting that. If I didn't already adore Bill Hader, that would have sealed the deal.

by Anonymousreply 26July 3, 2020 2:54 AM

I never realized Grace should be in our equine thread.

by Anonymousreply 27July 3, 2020 2:57 AM

What was the deal with mannequins in the 80s? This video, the movie, and our local mall paid live women to pose like mannequins. I once went up to one to pinch her stockings to see if she was real. She winked at me.

by Anonymousreply 28July 3, 2020 3:02 AM

This is their best song:

Grace Slick looks like a gay guy lip-syncing her songs in front of his bedroom mirror with no one watching.

by Anonymousreply 30July 3, 2020 4:09 AM

One of the best songs from the 1980s, but I wouldn't say it's the greatest music video from that era though.

by Anonymousreply 31July 3, 2020 4:38 AM

Good song, awful video. Whoever's responsible should consider honor suicide.

by Anonymousreply 32July 3, 2020 5:01 AM

This was Diane Warren’s first #1 hit and it was nominated for an Oscar. This and “Sara” are great tracks.

by Anonymousreply 33July 4, 2020 1:50 PM

If I heard that song and never saw the video and wasn’t told when the song was released or who performed it, I could easily tell it came from the 80s.

by Anonymousreply 34July 4, 2020 6:52 PM

This song gave grace slick the record for being the oldest woman ever to have a #1 hit at 47 years old. Cher broke the record in 1999 with believe and has held the record since.

by Anonymousreply 35July 4, 2020 7:06 PM

Anyone a fan of Runaway?

My biggest memories of that song/video are 1) Mickey Thomas looks better with a moustache, and 2) Mickey Thomas's vocal talents deserved better.

by Anonymousreply 37July 6, 2020 12:20 AM

Agreed on Mickey Thomas, but I'm glad he was able to make a lucrative singing career with Starship. There are a perhaps a handful of truly amazing singers out there, and most never go beyond being backup singer.

by Anonymousreply 38July 6, 2020 12:24 AM

Does Mickey own the starship name? On Wikipedia there’s a part of the band and Thomas’ bio that said he got into a violent fight with another bandmate that ended with Thomas having to have reconstructive plastic surgery and plates put into his skull.

by Anonymousreply 39July 6, 2020 12:33 AM

They sold out, but WBTC and NGSUN are incredibly catchy. Compared to today's music, it's like Jefferson Airplane.

by Anonymousreply 40July 26, 2020 5:07 AM

It was a great song, Grace should be proud of it.

by Anonymousreply 41July 26, 2020 5:14 AM

I love the '80s Starship songs. It's like '80s Heart. Yes, they sold out in a way but the songs are fun and bring good memories. Both Mickey Thomas and Ann Wilson sang the hell out of their '80s songs so they did elevate the material.

by Anonymousreply 42July 26, 2020 7:16 AM

Grace Slick was one of only four women who performed at Woodstock.
