The opening sequence, the first US performance, the bits in the pool leading to the iconic Dodgers Stadium performance were particularly stellar and then add to it this movie making history with its sex scene and it's definitely getting thumbs up from me.

That the opening sequence made me both laugh and want to cry (I didn't cry just yet, but the visible struggle Elton has with himself to blurt out all of the ugly truth about his problems to a room full of ordinary strangers while sat there in his bigger-than-life easy-to-criticize costume got to me thanks to Taron's performance and that's why I did find myself crying later in the film) at practically the same time is already testament to the emotional power the movie has. BTW, I ended up watching this film with my straight sister (first time we got to go to the cinema together since her recent wedding) and she very much agreed with me. So TBH, I think BR's better performance in the box offices is more to do with the timing, the more explicit nature of this film, that Elton is maybe not the most controversial figure out there, but he is more so than Freddie was, plus he's not a dead, tragic gay who can be fit into the 'sad young man' trope that some homophobes can live with in peace. He's alive, still here and making PR mistakes every once in a while, and AIDS didn't claim his life, forcing us all to pity him. Plus, BR wanked all over the live aid performance, which truly was breathtaking, so when a bigger part of the movie (relative to Rocketman) is just dedicated to enjoying the music and nothing else, there's no plot, there's no characters and motivations to consider, then it's a far more straight-forward type of enjoyment for music lovers, while Rocketman veered away from using Elton's original performances and settled for partial covers of them being used as a part of the emotional journey of the main character, which is not as pure a form of music enjoyment. But as films? I still maintain that despite the gap in profits, Rocketman is the superior movie, without a doubt, and a worthy film even beyond this comparison.

Saw Rocketman today. It was pretty good but not like the best movie of all time or whatever. The much-hyped sex scene was very, very short but the kissing was sexy. Jamie Bell’s performance was my favourite. Richard winked a lot which was cute. His character wore a suit to a party at Mama Cass's house which was like WHAT ARE YOU DOING AT LEAST LOOSEN YOUR TIE. Music was good. Dancing was good. Costumes were good. Script was meh. The ending could have been 20 min shorter.

It really only inspired me in that now I want to build a cottage to look like Mama Cass's house where I will throw excellent parties.

R592 I think he’s just investing time into his new relationship. I have a feeling the “celeb lifestyle” has always bored him to an extent. Like he said he’s enjoying the ride, but you won’t see him at EVERY event ever like other thirsty actors (I.e Noah Centineo). Plus, I think he already got most of these things out of his system in 2017 after 13RW really blew up. He did a trip with Alisha alone in November and saw everyone for filming then went to an Ariana concert with one of his friends/costars. He also took Richard to the wallows show which is one of his costar’s band, so the effort is there but it’s clear that he’s prioritizing time with Charlie and his gorgeous boyfriend at the moment.
