The godparents have usually been British but they do not have to be. They are very seldom close relatives - traditionally, siblings and first cousins and uncles-aunts aren't chosen. They no longer have to be Protestant but they do have to be Christians. As for approval - I suspect it's like the name of the baby: it's considered courteous to submit the name to the Queen, but she can't really do anything about it if she doesn't like the name. Unless the Sussexes pick a convicted felon, I doubt the Queen would interfere in the choice of godparent.

R16 - This is a tad pedantic, but the cross that Kate wears frequently is often referred to as a "crucifix". It isn't - a crucifix includes a design of the body of Christ. Crosses are plain. Although crucifixes are not uncommon amongst Catholics, Protestants vey rarely wear them.

I didn't know she was JW. However, as it happens, Jehovah's Witnesses are considered a Christian denomination - however, as they reject the concept of the Trinity, they fall way outside mainstream Christianity. Wayyyyyyy outside. I doubt they'd exclude her, the question is rather, as a JW, would Serena agree to be a godparent to a child baptised in a Trinitarian Christian denomination?

R21 - General information - when you posted the photo it reminded me that a few of the tabloids talked about Kate's Diamond Crucifix at the TCC - so I thought I'd bring it up. The media are so fucking sloppy.

Andrew and Sarah will remarry. Sarah is in tight with the family and appears to get along with just about all of them. The RF is fully aware that they are all but officially back together. But they won't remarry until Princess Beatrice marries. Philip won't even object to a remarriage if he hangs on. However, Andrew and Sarah better do it soon while the queen is still alive so as to restore Sarah's HRH status. If Elizabeth were to die before the remarriage, Charles, the bastard, may try and block Sarah's HRH status from being restored. But no one should be denied happiness in their latter years. If Charles can marry the Rottweiler and expect everyone to accept it, then Andrew and Sarah should be allowed to remarry without interference.

If Harry and Markle's marriage falls on the rocks, Andrew and Sarah could be examples of stability.

I'm not a lip-reader either, R18, but to me it looks like he says "turn around" and then repeats it twice more. It's an odd interaction given what I'm used to from these two. The stans and the evil hatahs are getting into semantic slapfights over the meaning of "snap" and "bark" etc. (forgive me. gossip gods, for I have sinned - I read the Celebitchy comments yesterday for the first time in months) so I guess I won't wade into that one, but let's just say it doesn't look like a warm or caring interaction on Harry's part. Even if he is just instructing her, there's something kind of weird about it. It's an odd, bossy tone to take with one's wife. No leaning down and whispering it in her ear, or a reassuring touch on the shoulder, just that "turn around" and scowl.

Note: Yes I am fully aware the interaction could be meaningless and upon leaving the balcony they fell upon each other with such lust that Master Archie's triplet siblings grow already in her wokest of wombs.

As for Meg looking like her mom, I think she does, and the more she weighs the more you see it in her face. In that pic of Doria holding newborn MM, she looks exactly like her dad, tho.

I spent my adolescence on the west coast and am very familiar with Doria's type. She almost certainly partakes in the mary jane, is seriously into her yoga, is kind and yet fiercely independent and able to say no. There's an odd disconnect between mother and daughter in that Doria really comes across as self-contained and at ease in her own skin. Not for one moment did she look out of place or unsure of herself at the wedding (or in any of the pap shots of her walking her dogs, which she clearly feels zero need to get dressed up or made-up for). Meghan is the opposite to me. Someone who projects insecurity and not-good-enough-ness even in her attempts to come across as confident and secure. I'd actually love the inside scoop on that mother-daughter relationship, because they seem like very different people and Doria gives nothing away in public (again, opposite of her daughter).

Jehovah's Witnesses also don't celebrate birthdays, or holidays such as Christmas, if I remember . . . as these are usually times when godparents communicate with godchildren, it might be a bit awkward for JW to function as godparent. A godparent is supposed to commit to participating in a child's religious life. I think they seldom do these days, so it's probably a moot point. But given this is the Queen's great-grandchild being baptised by a high-ranking Anglican church official there might be some quiet pushback on the suitability of a godparent who doesn't recognise the Trinity. In fact, I'm not even sure the JW's accept baptism itself. I think I remember that they reject a fundamental tenet of baptism: that it washes away original sin. That alone might disqualify Williams.

So no for the Clooneys, she identifies as Druze and he has said many times that he is agnostic. Maybe Oprah? I think MM will try to get one celeb in, the rest will be traditional.

There is a lot of controversy surrounding the CoE these days, that in its frenzied attempts to be relevant ("inclusive" I think was the euphemism), it ended up drained of its passion and standing for nothing, which proved disastrous. It didn't attract new converts and lost many of its traditional adherents.

Whether the CoE, of which the Queen is titular head, will do what it's been doing under the inclusive "nothing means anything" tent it's erected, and welcome as Christian godparents to a grandchild of the titular head of the CoE two non-Christians, an agnostic, and a woman who doesn't even accept one of the basic symbolisms of baptism, remains to be seen.

Beatrice and Eugenie would be lovely choices.

Well, that leaves the Tindalls or the Phillipses (Zara's brother and sister-in-law, innocuous enough) and a couple of Harry's friends, von Straubenzee and Inskip, if Bea and Yuge can't be strong-armed into it (Andrew might have a thing or two to say about that!). But that leaves, ahem, no one of colour, so perhaps Oprah might have to be hauled in.

R32. Very nicely stated. I like Beatrice and Eugenie a lot. They are nice girls. No scandal about them, never in trouble, and they may not be senior royals, but they are pretty damn close. And they're always there for the family. If Andrew and Sarah did a couple of good things right, those girls are it.

There's also Genevieve Hillis, Lindsay Roth and Benita Litt from Meghan's college days. They were at the wedding, the baby shower or both.

Don't think we need to worry about Charles dying soon. People freak out about his swollen digits and reddened face but those symptoms independently don't signify life-threatening medical conditions. Chronic maybe yes, life-threatening no. Part of what we do when assessing patients is not only with physical exam but also asking them how they are feeling physically. Level of functioning is a predictor of good health in the geriatric population, in other words it's not just how healthy the elderly person appears that's also important. It's why Phillip looks like the crypt keeper's father and yet was still driving around until he damn near killed somebody.

Anyways, if Charles walks into the exam room, we're not going to assume he's at death's door and prescribe him shitloads. of meds for symptoms management, I'll ask him how he feels physically. We know that he remains active and keeps a full work schedule, and still travels often. He's not incapacitated nor has any decreased level. of functioning for his age (that we know of). The dactylitis (sausage digits) is not in itself life-threatening, if I had to guess it may be due to psoriatic arthritis. From a functional standpoint there may be some decrement. He's still able to pick up the wine glass; can he still tie his own shoe laces with those fingers, who knows? Theres an increased risk of cardiovascular disease with severe, untreated psoriatic arthritis. It's all about keeping systemic and localized inflammation under control in this condition. There may be ocular involvement with psoriatic arthritis, but regular surveillance will prevent that too. He has the best medical team available to him so I wouldn't worry about him croaking anytime soon.

As for his reddened face, hard to tell. Some people when they get older, their skin thins out dramatically thus making every change (broken capillaries, flushing for instance) very noticeable and look worse than it actually is. If we're surmising about a skin condition then rosacea is a possibility. It's a common, chronic condition that affects fair-skinned people of European descent, and one of the causes being vascular dysregulation manifesting as inflamed facial skin. But again it's not life-threatening.

Andrew is looking very....stalwart in r18's clip. Kind like a secret service agent standing protectively close to his charge. He gets Duke of Edinburgh when Philip kicks off, right?

Regarding Charles' fingers... I seem to remember on one of these threads, seeing a picture of a much younger Charles (in his 30s, perhaps) and I noticed that his fingers were chubby then.

R40. Andrew is the Duke of York as is customary for the second son of the monarch. Andrew won't give up that title even when Charles becomes king. Harry will then be the second son of the monarch; however, Harry has his dukedom, and presumably, Andrew is not dying anytime soon. When Andrew passes, the next one in line for York title will be the current youngest one, Prince Louis of Cambridge, as second son of the reigning monarch, which may be William by then. But if Andrew is still alive when Louis is a young man, Andrew retains the title, and Louis may or may not get a dukedom if Charles or William determine it appropriate.

Lastly, rumor has it that the Duke of Edinburgh title will go to Edward after Philip passes away. It is the reason Edward asked for the Earl of Wessex title when he got married, and Sophie became Countess of Wessex--and not a duchess as did Sarah, Duchess of York, Kate, Duchess of Cambridge and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. When Edward becomes Duke of Edinburgh, Sophie will become Duchess of Edinburgh.

I bet there's a bit of sibling rivalry between Charlotte and Louis. She's obviously the kind of kid who loves being the centre of attention, so she probably isn't thrilled that she's no longer the baby of the family. There was a moment on Saturday when she was waving to the crowd with both hands while the adults were fussing over Louis. I'd like to see her reaction once she gets old enough to fully understand that George is the heir and she's the spare!

Jehovah Witnesses are not considered christians by other main stream denominations so no Serena would not be a candidate for Godmother. Anglican baptisms like all mainstream Christians are trinitarian.

In the last thread people were discussing the white "epaulets" on MM's shoulders while they were standing on the balcony. What they remind me of: the little napkin/towlettes used when actors and newscasters put on makeup, to avoid getting makeup from their neck on the clothing. God I hope that's not what they were, if so she is really having serious personal trouble.

IME, Catholics LOVE crucifixes. I remember visiting the homes of my neighbors, Italians and Portuguese in blue collar neighborhood. Yes, crucifixes everywhere. And little portraits of Jesus with his crown of thorns pushing into his forehead and making blood drip down. There would be a dried palm frond tucked behind it. Jesus leading two frightened children over a perilous bridge in a dark forest. His bony body pierced all over, grimacing in pain while all his wounds bled 3-paint (wearing only a dinner napkin over his nuggets!). Mary Magdalen bent over his dead body, weeping.

Charlotte is perhaps the Anne of her generation. Born in a different time, Anne may have been the most suited to the throne.

I said on the other thread, I think Louis is a big smiler. One of my niece's kids was like that - even as a small infant. She'd look you right in the eyes and give a huge, big smile right at you. Most babies don't do that.

I would bet that it was Louis' big smile that Kate was reacting to at his baptism. Remember how she was just glowing and smiling down at him in her arms.

That kind of smile is very powerful coming from babies. And natural. Just comes naturally to some babies. And look how Charles is reacting there. And how Camilla reacted to Louis when he was next to her waving on the balcony. Even Princess Anne was looking for Louis.

I just don't see the attraction in Doria. She has a face like a pug, and that nose! I think she was likely more into her own interests than being a mother and that's why we see zero warmth between her and her daughter, and little apparent interest in the grandchild. Markle used to praise her dad to the skies, not her mom. I wonder what the real story is there.

Agree with R24, re Doris. I’m a native US west coaster and she reminds me a lot of the chill older ladies there. Good for her for being there for her daughter now, but I‘m sure she’s very happy leading her own life while her daughter chases fame.

It's pretty obvious what the pointing out that MM now resembles her mother is about - that all her efforts to lean white have failed and she's right back where she started, pre-hair straightening and nose job. Schadenfreude on the part of some, wokeness on the part of others.

Spot on, R96, I know exactly what you're talking about. One of my cousins was 'that' baby - just the biggest, widest, sincerest (because babies cannot be insincere and this is half their charm when you end up with one of those naturally sweet and outgoing personalities) smile for everyone. And you're exactly right about how powerful that is in a baby. Complete strangers will visibly soften and fall instantly in love. I'm convinced there's some very deep-rooted instincts at play in such interactions, because even professed baby-hating adults usually can't help but break into a big grin themselves when confronted with the embodiment of charm that is a smiley infant. That joy on Charles' face is real.

R98 Ha! I'm glad someone else recognizes the 'type' - I've lived east coast, west coast and UK and it is a west coast type through and through. The self-possession I see in Doria is one I recognize from interactions with upper class and privately educated Brits, weirdly enough. It's rare, in my experience, to meet someone like that from a middle class or lower background. I've always attributed it to public school (i.e. in the wealthy Brits) but it's not a 100% correlation, for sure, and a percentage of those public school types do go on to be 90's Hugh Grant style blithering idiots, so it doesn't work on all of them.

I would love the scoop on Doria. She's more fascinating than Meghan because she's difficult to read (and I think Meghan is one of the easiest-to-read people I've seen in the spotlight for awhile). She was very young when she had Meghan wasn't she? Late teens, early 20s? And never had more children? I know a woman of her exact type who did just that -m oops baby at 19, no more kids, never particularly material but also not abusive or neglectful, just not really interested in 'mom'ing once her one kid was old enough to look after herself, and equally uninterested in identifying as a mom. I like the way Doria just walks her dogs in her casual clothes and doesn't give af about the paps. I genuinely wonder what she thinks of her daughter, underneath it all. Methinks Megs probably takes after her father in terms of character/personality. Thomas Markle's tone in a lot of interviews has been wounded, you can see his pride was wounded at being portrayed as the fat, unworldly oaf getting played by the paps. Meghan radiates that same fear that she will be mistaken for someone other than who she wishes to be.

In Doria's appearances in the UK, what I see is embarrassment, just trying to get through knowing how she is being scrutinised. Pretty much how most people would feel.

Louis is not only more confident and forceful than his siblings, he is also more attractive. He has escaped the curse of the Middleton eye bags (George has them very badly) and also has Kate's very dark, distinctive arched eyebrows and dark eyelashes. His facial bone structure seems finer than the other two (he doesn't have Lottie's heavy jaw) and the hair on his head is darker. Definitely better looking than George, Wills and Harry. Perhaps will grow up to look like a male version of his mother.

I’m outing myself as a frau in order to hopefully explain some of Meghan’s recent looks and behavior.

I’m 5’3” and normally weigh around 105-110 but I’m deep into menopause now so I’m probably a bit over 110 right now. So, petite and long-time runner. I’m now 52 and my son just turned 17 yesterday so I was almost 36 when he was born. It was an easy pregnancy but a very difficult delivery (Thank you, Johns Hopkins nurse-goddesses) and a month after the birth, I know I looked exactly like Meghan: puffy, round-faced, scared, alone.

My mom was there, dad and sister arrived a week later then in-laws a month later and my husband was terrific and hands-on but being a new mother is exhausting and terrifying. Everything is off in your body and your mind. I would cry for no reason then laugh so hard that I would start urinating. And I couldn’t stop it so yes, I would be standing in my kitchen with pee running down my legs, which would start up the tears again. It was so frustrating and upsetting and lonely. And it took a long time to feel OK just walking up and down the street - I felt like my insides were going to fall out for weeks. I breastfed for ten months but only lost that last ten pounds when my son was hospitalized for a terrible virus at 22 months then got RSV. I was so stressed that I stopped eating for a month.

When I see that look on Meghan’s face on the balcony, it breaks my heart. It is VERY hard to control one’s emotions right after childbirth. She looks lonely, sad and scared and all are very valid and understandable emotions during new parenthood. And she’s going through them live on the world stage.

Here’s a little bit of inside info... choose to believe it or not, doesn’t matter to me. The Cambridges are getting along better, not great, but they’re in a better place. Women who breastfeed lose the weight quickest, and that's the surest way to get it off. Kate, being athletic (and with good genes) can apparently pull it off. Kate has never pretended to be anything other than what she is. It's harder to tell with Meghan, but she should be slimmer by now. That's just factually true of how breastfeeding works.

Women's bodies, I would guess, respond differently to the raging hormones that linger after childbirth, and these two women have completely different body types. One is tall and slender who carried all the baby weight in the front belly area, the other short and boxy who carried it also in her hips, thighs, and arse. It's much harder to lose the latter sort. Kate was athletic and 31 when she had her first child; Meghan 38. That makes quite a difference.

R56868 - I share your gluttonous response to Devon cream. Does Harrods still have that all you can eat cream tea it had for a mere 3.50 about 40 years ago, opened at 3PM I think? Once in a while I'd drop in and indulge, it had a trestle table collapsing with pastries but all I ever went for was the endless pots of tea and the excellent fresh-baked scones and cream. But I'd with amusement see American and German tourists loading up their plates with the pastries when the best thing in the room was the least decorative and most homely and unassuming.

Well I delivered a baby myself and I had no such big belly like M or such bloat after that . I did give breastfeeding . When M was pregnant it was If she was pregnant with twins but hey just one popped out . Very oddd things happened in that pregnancy . All that circus surrounding that birth . You would think it was the second coming of Jesus . But still no pics of Archie . How you explain that ! I thought People would première the baby pics but nothing also . We just have a pic from afar with the queen and PP and a pic in the Windsor Castle what looked like a doll . So we are still waiting to see him .
