Proper telephones. They didn't need charging, they worked during power outages, and they weighed at least 5 lbs and thus never slid off the table and were never dropped. We had this one in red, as shown, and light blue.
R126, I'm curious how your father left the phone off the hook without getting that insufferably annoying "YOUR PHONE'S OFF THE HOOK!!!!! HANG IT UP!!!!!" tone the phone company - needless to say, there was only one - used to stop people from doing exactly that.

OMG R159 - you posted a pic of my phone - that died literally today. It lasted 36 years. I'd forgotten until I saw the pic you posted. I feel like crying.
I got it when I moved to America in 1983 and brought it back to England, when I came back. The English always admired it. - I mentioned this on a thread a few weeks ago, in fact.
I don't know how I'll ever fix it. The buttons play a weird sound when you press them - a sort of "I give up" sound.
When I was a kid I always thought if I ever live in America I'll get one of those phones, in red...and I did and it died...today.

R319's calendar of events from the Mineshaft is unintentionally hilarious -- "Matinee Toilet Tactics' -- I was in NYC then and we never went to any of those West Side bars. We were common whores though but we went dancing, Had drinks. It was getting pretty decadent out there as the 70s kind of hardened into the 80s.

Fiber Optic lamps. At the time, no one had ever seen light at the tip of a bendable surface like that. We barely had red only LEDs for switches at that point. People always wanted to touch them to watch them move, amazed how tiny the pin point of light was.

R443-Most Japanese cars of the 1970's had cramped spartan interiors and punishing rides. They weren't that great. They would also FOLD UP in an accident. I would have felt much safer in a big American Car of the 70's especially a full size GM car of 1974-1976 when GM first introduced air bags. They were the first car company in the world to offer air bags beginning in 1973.

People were very suspicious of air bags when they were introduced as an option and almost no one ordered them on their car, afraid that they would inexplicably go off with the slightest provocation. RE-POST.
Did New York look like the movies or did the movies look like New York?
by Anonymous | reply 516 | June 12, 2019 9:24 PM |
It's me, R513/514, again. When my family went shopping I would go along because those department stores were like a wonderland! I would wander over to the toy dept and look longingly at the model kits on the shelves. Or I'd go to the pet dept and stroll the aisles of fish tanks, wondering what it would be like to have this or that particular species as a resident of my home.
The best though was the arcade area. They had this submarine game which completely thrilled me. You would look into a periscope and fire torpedos and you'd see them racing toward the enemy ships and if you hit one there was a flash and it would sink. Not digital -- 100% analog, and it felt very authentic, at least to a ten year old non-submariner.
There was something marvelous about those department stores. But this was before ... well, forget smartphones, it was before VCRs and PCs, for Christ's sake! Everyone has everything at their fingertips these days yet they seem less happy, not more.

I lived opposite an American in London in the mid 70s and she had her Mustang shipped over. It wasn't great looking - nothing like the 60s Mustang.

By the way, the guy on the right in R523 is Andrew Smith, who also did some modeling in the 1970s.

Those over-worked bodies and baggy shorts @ R523 do NOT look 70s.

You're right, r526. The first professional beach volleyball tournament took place in the mid 1970s, but the photo in R523 is probably from around the mid to late 1980s. My bad.

Gurl, no! - it looks more recent than that..including the HD quality photo and the other aspects I already pointed out. You've blundered big time posting that on here.

Why was avocado and burnt orange on everything so popular in the 1970s?

[quote]Why was avocado and burnt orange on everything so popular in the 1970s?
and brown and lime green of course.
Actually, I think I prefer them to all the gray and black you see today.

[quote]Why was avocado and burnt orange on everything so popular in the 1970s?
Because the theme of the times was getting in touch with nature, the idea of organic food started to become popular etc. Everyone had house plants, and many of them. Brown was very popular for sofas and rugs and even refrigerators. In contrast if you wanted something more light, mustard or avocado was very pop for kitchen stuff.
Personally, while I know it kitchy to see those things, I couldn't stand those damn colors even back then. I actually like the new slate matte finishes that are coming out on some of the newest appliances. It lets the food shine as the star instead of making the kitchen look like food.

R552 went to elementary art school. Good for you. Now when you grow up and go to a real art school you will realize that shades don't have to be part of a hue.

"1980" is incorrect. This aired in 1977, and is, imho, the best TV commercial ever produced.

Very few things in nature are those 70s colors...thankfully.
by Anonymous | reply 558 | June 13, 2019 1:45 PM |
R551- In pigment, black is the presence of all colors, white is the absence of all color. In light, it's the reverse.
by Anonymous | reply 559 | June 13, 2019 4:56 PM |
Also, a shade is black added to a color, a tint is adding white.

Looking through r576 and I am thoroughly impressed. At first I was taken aback as the toaster oven and refrigerator seem to be as dated as the rest of the place. Usually when one lives like this one just ends up with a newer refrigerator and toaster oven. The newest thing I see in the entire apartent is the fax machine in the library. It looks like it might even be from the year 2000 or later.

Myrtle Beach BEFORE it became K Mart By The Sea.
by Anonymous | reply 586 | June 19, 2019 1:19 AM |
R579, I am also impressed by the absolutely pristine condition of the décor. It looks like no one ever sat on the furniture, walked on the rugs or cooked in the kitchen. How is that possible after > 40 years? (Most of the stuff in the apartment was out of style by the late '70s; it's probably closer to 50 years old than 40.) Were the previous owners collectors and '70s fanatics who acquired pieces in perfect condition over the years and decorated the place to match? I can't believe the wallpaper, for example, is nearly a half-century old. It's in perfect condition. On the other hand, where would one buy wallpaper like that nowadays?
Also, checking the address on google, the building appears to be in an area called West Ridge. Is that a nice neighborhood? If so, I am even more impressed that a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 1900 sq ft condominium sold for only $148,000 less than a year ago. I realize that the new owners would need to spend thousands to bring the apartment up to date, but even so it seems cheap. Is this typical for Chicago?
by Anonymous | reply 587 | June 19, 2019 5:03 AM |
^^^And how much would you absolutely have to spend right away? I could not live with the wallpaper or the grass-green carpeting, even for a huge, cheap apartment. Most of the rest of the really eccentric stuff is furniture and doodads that would be gone with the previous owners. The kitchen cabinetry is dreary, but replacing the hardware would improve it somewhat. I like the old appliances (assuming they work). Stripped of the weirdness, the bathrooms would be basic but functional.
There are people living in the big coastal cities with much worse for much, much more. Maybe I should put Chicago on the potential places to retire list.
