I have a penchant for these films because the threat seems so tangible and... possible. I saw "The Strangers" in theaters in 2008 and thought it was fantastic, save a couple logical lapses. The first 40 minutes made for the most riveting, suspenseful cinema I'd seen on the big screen at the time, and I don't think I've seen anything as nerve-shredding since. What are some other good ones?
Hush was good. Netflix.

2015's [italic]Intruders,[/italic] starring Beth Riesgraf (whom I love) as a severe agoraphobic who's caring for her terminally ill brother. Since she never leaves the house, all the brother's meals are delivered by Rory Culkin's character, who works for a meal delivery service. There are several nutso (in a good way) plot twists, and it's definitely worth a watch.
Sexy Jack Kesy co-stars.

I personally didn’t care for The Strangers. The good guys were extremely stupid. My favorite home invasion movie was the original Wait Until Dark.

The characters in The Strangers indeed make ridiculous decisions after the midway point, R6 (i.e. splitting up, accidentally shooting their friend, etc.) However, I agree with OP regarding the first half being riveting. The protracted sequence where Liv Tyler is left alone in the house is absolutely horrifying.

Funny Games is a great postmodern critique of screen violence, but it is not remotely scary--just macabre and demented.

Inside. A French film from the mid 00's about a heavily pregnant woman being terrorised by Beatrice Dalle. Really strong stuff, worthy checking out. Avoid the tepid American remake though!

Is Shudder any good? Netflix for horror fans....

R10, "Inside" is fucked up. I saw it several years back and would never want to watch it again. It's a rough one. I saw they remade it with Rachel Nichols as the lead, but it unsurprisingly looks mediocre.

Another vote for Inside and Funny Games (the originals)

It isn't a home invasion movie per se but the scene in Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer that deals with such an event is quite disturbing. That's a young Michael Rooker of The Walking Dead fame.

“The Desperate Hours” (1955) with Humphrey Bogart and Fredric March. Not the shitty 1990 remake with Mickey Rourke and Anthony Hopkins (title shortened to “Desperate Hours.”)

R16 really? I keep hearing the opposite.
R19 You're Next was awesome.

I know that there are older films than the event, but how much do you think Sharon Tate’s murder upped the anti and embedded a deeper fear in people about this type of scenario, thus pushing the envelope for films like this? I heard that after the murder, much of LA started locking their doors and installing security systems.

R16 I liked Breathe too, was it the first time that it was flipped and the invaders became the ones being terrorized?

R11
I subscribed after they announced The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs would be recurring, which has been a real highlight for me. If you're not adverse to foreign films, short films, and extra shlocky horror ie: Society, Street Trash, Brain Damage, then it's totally worth it. They are putting out more originals, which are serviceable in the scare department but have an indie sort of charm, and most importantly aren't formulaic the way Syfy and Chiller movies are. If you're going strictly for mainstream classics, you'll find about as many as any other major streaming service and it isn't worth the expense

[quote]The Strangers indeed make ridiculous decisions after the midway point, [R6] (i.e. splitting up, accidentally shooting their friend, etc.)
The rationale behind the accidental shooting of the friend was that the writer wanted to address the idea that having a gun in the house doesn't necessarily save you. People panick.
I love YOU'RE NEXT and THE COLLECTOR.

Not a home invasion movie per se, but there's a scene in Martha Marcy May that's pretty good.

If you consider finding household pests in your house a home invasion, the scariest movie for me is "The Naked Jungle" where Charlton Heston is trying to keep ants out his house.
The link is to the scene where the ants are at his front door.

OP, look for a French film called Them (French title: Ils), which came out a year or two before The Strangers and has a lot of similarities (young couple are terrorized in their isolated home by unknown assailants). It's very good, and has one of the best opening scenes of a horror/thriller movie ever - the mother and daughter on the dark road...
There has actually been a controversy for years about whether Bryan Bertino plagiarized Ils with The Strangers. Bertino has mentioned the Keddie murders and an incident from his own childhood as the inspiration for The Strangers, which claims to be based on true events. But the two films do have a lot in common.

There was this older movie with Sally Fields, I remember. Anyway, she is talking to her daughter on the phone, the daughter is a teen who's home alone, and some guy breaks into the house and kills her after a really violent struggle, and Sally hears it all over the phone. I remember being totally terrified. Anyway the movie becomes a tense thriller about revenge. Oh, and the young murderer is Kiefer Sutherland.

Elephant Walk, 1954. Liz replaced Vivien after shooting had already begun but nothing and nobody was stopping those elephants from marching through the house.
