Christopher Reeve
Such an astonishingly beautiful man. He was perfectly cast as Superman, bringing unusual qualities to the title character both as a superhero and as Clark Kent; he also made it seem plausible that other people (even Lois Lane) would not easily see they were the same person. He was a highly trained actor, but although he had a number of stage successes in famous old plays, he was hard to cast in films other than as Superman (perhaps because of his great beauty).
Anyone know anything about his love lfie, or his career before his accident? i always thought he became such a weird nationwide symbol of fortitude and endurance after the accident (through no fault of his own) that he almost eased to become a real person anymore.

During the height of his fame, he had a longtime girlfriend and had children with her but never married her. Her name is Gae Exton.

He used to come into the restaurant I worked at in the 80s with his two older kids who were children at the time, maybe not even in junior high yet. He was charming and polite as were his kids. and you could see how much they loved their dad. People enjoyed waiting on them because they were such a lovely family. If we walked by each other in the neighborhood he'd always say hi. He was a very nice man.

He's one of those men who are so perfectly preppy attractive that I get a Ken doll vibe, and feel they are so far out of my league that even fantasizing about them is pointless.

I once met him at a Sunday matinee of As Is, at Circle Rep, in the spring of 1985. It was funny, because we were the only two people there under 40. At intermission, we discussed the play, and then Somewhere in Time, about which I complimented him. He was friendly and modest. After the play we exchanged a few words, then farewells.
I went down Christopher St. to Ty’s for a little while, then back to Sheridan Square, where I ran into him on the sidewalk. Small world, etc. More farewells. Then as he walked away, he glanced back at me, twice.
My older, gay brother had said there were rumors of him being seen in gay bars on the Upper West Side. I never went up there.
We never mentioned Superman. We didn’t need to. He was tall, with shoulders for days. And so handsome and endearing . Later, I was distressed to hear of his terrible accident. Yet he had seemed so humble already. What a sad end to our hero.
I’d have killed to see him in The Aspern Papers in London, with Wendy Hiller and Vanessa Redgrave. That would have been a treat. He never shied from taking risks, even knowing he’d be in illustrious company.
Sweet man.

He was pinched and prissy looking. Ok for that very good Superman film, but not very good in anything else.

He was offered a lot of very famous Eighties roles and turned them down--he had a very strong sense of what he wanted to do and how he wanted to craft his image. He was actually cast as Fletcher Christian in "The Bounty," and then had second thoughts and reneged. They had to cast Mel Gibson instead.

r3 Agreed! I found it in such poor taste when they made that Superman film with Brandon Routh I think it was. Like wait for him to die before you make another movie with another superman. r21 Yes, I read his book and he mentioned how he was always trying new treatments, I remember one story where some guy was scheduled for some kind of MRI or something, some other paralyzed guy but Chris was in town so they bumped the other guy and let him take the appt instead, I kinda thought that was fucked up. Poor guy, when he flew to Israel for some treatment he said how he had to have nurse and a whole plane of medical equipment, etc. What a bitch to have to do all that. At least he had money. Was the accident his fault? Some say it was and he was not nearly the rider he thought he was. He should have let go of the fucking reins. This is another example of medical technology being too advanced, he was basically internally decapitated, yes he lived for years afterward but sometimes we need to just let people go when they are so far gone.

He picked me up and I went home with him. Other than some making out, nothing happened. He spent the whole night talking about his father. My take is that he was "gay" because he had a lousy relationship with his father and he was seeking affection from another male. Once he worked through that, he stopped seeking men.
The only thing that I remember from that evening was that when he was a boy, he was building something and bent a few nails trying to hammer them in. His father was furious and made him hammer every bent nail straight. Weird thing to remember.

You're cray cray R32
I recall an episode of Howard Stern E! tv show (in the mid 90s) where he asked a male prostitute if he slept with anyone famous.
He said yes. Howard then wanted a name but after the guy refused (which made me believe that the relationship could've been ongoing), Stern eventually settled for just the guy's initials.
The prostitute replied CR. Everyone on Howard's crew started saying Christopher Reeve in unison. The guy looked shocked & embarrassed from the guesses which made me believe they were right. I later looked up famous US male actors with the initials CR & could only find him.
Closet case closed.

[quote]Was the accident his fault?
Yes, the accident was 110% his own fault. Never mind letting go of the fucking reins, he shouldn't have been forcing horses to jump over stupid fake fences to begin with! Show jumping is cruel and evil, and those poor horses suffer terribly.
I'm not glad he suffered, because he seemed to have been a nice guy, but still, when you do stupid, cruel, selfish things, sometimes there are terrible consequences.

I never saw any of the Superman films, and growing up all I knew him as was that actor who got paralysed, but I started reading about him last year. He was extremely determined to walk again. Given the severity of his injury, that may seem like deep denial, but he was making small progress in the years before his death - he could move his index finger at will and regained slight movement in his legs. He was so desperate for a cure that he wanted scientists to relax the regulations around medical testing on humans.
In one interview he said that he didn't want to have to wait until his seventies to walk again. It was poignant to read in hindsight, knowing that even that sad scenario never came to pass.

Why would R39 have to be seventeen R40? I am 36 and have only seen Reeve in one Superman flick and The Remains of The Day. I don't remember him at all in the latter.
I do remember him as guy in a wheelchair, very disabled. Not able to breathe for himself, but talking about walking one day. Uncomfortable. And his wife died of lung cancer not long after him. Fucking sad for their kids, beyond measure.
We all look back on old film stars and I know a lot about Hollywood classic and film noir. No reason to know Chris Reeve. He wasn't a very memorable actor. And he looked like a Sears catalogue model. Not memorable.
I like R39's post. Since when is almost 37 seventeen? Geez the dudes are old here.
