What an unappealing woman. Did straight guys really find this look appealing in the 70s and early 80s?

She was never cast to be the sexpot in the show, but she was pretty, and she played the sensible one. Different aesthetic altogether.

And in the r7 commercial, she has a great little bod.

It's strange to think now, but back in the day Joyce was one half of Hollywood's biggest supercouple. Joyce and Ray Buktenica were THE Hollywood It couple (rivalled only by Farrah and Lee Majors) of the '70s. Before there was Brangelina there was Joytenica! Also, heard it from Ray himself that Joyce had an abnormally hairy taint...

she was also a complete bitch to suzanne summers when she was having the salary dispute over three s company. Sommers was being paid a fraction of what the male actors on the sitcom were and she went to war against the network. You know DeWitt had to be making peanuts comparitativley as well. Instead of fighting along with Sommers for more money she sided with the network. Sommers has the last laugh tho. Dewitt has a net worth about 4 mil and sommers is in excess of 100 mil today

The producers were cheapskates, and hired a trio of nobodies (though Ritter and Dewitt were being groomed by ABC to be in a sitcom).

OP, I don't know, but you've certainly come to the right place to ask straight men about the chicks they find attractive.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | June 8, 2019 6:25 AM |
I think a lot of you are too hard on Joyce De Witt. She had great chemistry with Ritter, was a good comedienne, and had a pretty decent bod. If you want to see untalented, look at Mary Cadorette who replaced the roommates in the spinoff, getting rid of the Dewitt and Priscilla Barnes sunk the show. Three's Company is a classic (which is why 40 years later, we are still talking about it). Joyce kind of reminds me of Joan Jett in the later seasons. If they wanted a spinoff that the audience wanted to see, they should have had Jack and Janet hook up. Ritter thought he was the main draw, but it was always an ensemble show, which is one reasons The Ropers failed............
by Anonymous | reply 41 | June 8, 2019 6:30 AM |
Speaking as a straight man, Joyce DeWitt was very cute and very doable. The OP is a bitter old queen who has no clue what's attractive to heterosexual men. The same goes double for R6.

R35 I don't know, Three's Company is one of the most popular shows on DL
I want the dirt on how Joycee and Susie ganged up on poor Tony winning Ann Wedgworth, he played sexy cougar divorcee Lana Shields, and had her fired from the show
by Anonymous | reply 49 | June 8, 2019 7:16 PM |
Remember the TV Land Three's Company 40th anniversary reunion from 2017? Joyce wouldn't shut the fuck up! She was so overjoyed, she hadn't received that much attention in over 30 years
Also Joyce made sure that NO ONE was to mention Suzanne Somers' name in her presence, I believe Joyce referred to her as "the first blonde we had"
by Anonymous | reply 50 | June 8, 2019 7:24 PM |
I remember! She was a fucking cunt!
by Anonymous | reply 51 | June 8, 2019 8:03 PM |
JDW was a consultant on the Three's Company tell-all TV movie, and I remember there was a scene shoehorned at the beginning where she was being sought after to play some Shakespearean role when she was cast in Three's Company.
Can't you just see her insisting on the inclusion of that important scene?
by Anonymous | reply 52 | June 8, 2019 8:07 PM |
R52 I saw that TV movie. Mind you I also saw her appear on some Suzanne Somers show where they apparently hadn’t spoken for 30 years. This was after John Ritter has died.

by Anonymous | reply 55 | June 8, 2019 8:16 PM |
Joyce is cool. Suzanne Somers is a hardcore Republican faithful, you should be hating her.
And it was Somers who was hated by Ritter and Dewitt for essentially holding the show hostage for more money. She wanted a dramatic raise and to be made the star of the show. When that didn't happen, she went on strike which led to her eventual elimination from the show. And yes, she eventually did make up with both of them.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | June 8, 2019 8:17 PM |
R56 I have to admit. I had an open mind about what happened with her firing from Three’s Company but watch Somers being interviewed. She claims she was taking the equal pay stance, but her story continually changes. In one story she says her husband went into a meeting with the network execs alone, in another she retells it that she went in there with him!!
The blunt truth (from all stories) was Somers and her husband believed she was the biggest star on the planet. They went to negotiate her contract and said if she didn’t receive the highest amount for a TV star per episode (at that time) she would go on strike. When they refused to pay it, Somers didn’t show up to the studio. She was then in breach of her contract. She and the husband still wouldn’t back down and they forced her to honour the remainder of her contract by filming one scene an episode on the telephone, taped after everyone had gone home!
Somers wasn’t interested in making sure DeWitt and she got the same money as John Ritter. She wanted to be on the biggest salary.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | June 8, 2019 8:26 PM |
I have always liked Somers and found her to be rather endearing, however, I also think she's a compulsive liar and a con-artist and wouldn't trust her as far as I could throw her, so I pretty much don't buy any of her tales about Three's Company
by Anonymous | reply 58 | June 8, 2019 9:42 PM |

Johnny Carson's "attorney," Henry Bushkin, dated Joyce DeWitt. Bushkin also wrote a tell-all book about Johnny Carson, which was an interesting read.

I grew up on Three's Company thanks to my mother, who watched it frequently in the '70s–'80s. Joyce brought the sardonic, intelligent energy to the show, while John Ritter and Suzanne Somers were the goofs. She was certainly not the eye candy on that show; both Somers and Priscilla Barnes were the pretty ones. John Ritter was quite hot too, which left Joyce kind of sticking out like a sore thumb. Her hairstyles didn't help either.

R83:
That was only true during the Roper years. Joyce became a dreadful hack as a comedienne shortly after they hacked her curls. That dreadful rhinoplasty was the final nail in the Janet Wood you describe...
by Anonymous | reply 86 | June 9, 2019 5:08 AM |
I see lots of postings online (Youtube and Sitcoms Online) from straight men who found Joyce to be attractive/hot in her TC days. Many seem to prefer her over Somers.
I though she was more on the cute side, but yeah the hairstyles she had the shows didn't do her any favors. The dowdy clothes they had her wear at times did also. I also agree that the nose job she had towards the end of the show was a bad idea. Her somewhat bigger than average Italian nose suited her face.

OP, you’re a jerk. You’re also either really young, or perhaps from another country.
Joyce DeWitt is an American national treasure.
Every week, millions of people across America tuned in to watch her, and the rest of an ensemble, who we all grew to rely on, so that we could tune out for 30 minutes, and laugh our assess off. As a kid, I never looked at her on the screen, & thought she was unappealing. She was a helluva lot better than my absolutely insane mother, that much, I know.
She was adorable.

Joyce's bitterness during the E True Hollywood Story on Three's Company is legendary, that Interview should if made her THE patron saint of the DL
She throws major shade at Jennilee Harrison, "the producers needed to find an actress who could actually, you know ACT", the producers, Hollywood , which she calls HOLLYWEIRD , and Suzanne multiple times, "Suzanne lies, that's what she does, she's always lied!". Even poor Mary Cardorette didn't get away unscathed from cruel Joyce, Mary said , "We were rehearsing Three's a Crowd and Joyce comes into the studio and sees me and goes, "Who the hell are you and why are you in our studio"? I was so embarrassed".
She then found herself in the mid 80s when she met a spiritual guru and began to meditate and she left Hollywood, sure Jan, to travel the world with her spiritual guru for 8 years
Bitch wasn't getting any work

Suzanne Somers was and continues to be a lying sack of shit.
From that E Hollywood story: She claims the reason she didn't return to work after the strike was over in October was because she had "broken ribs" from a Carson show taping the day before. Except their researchers discovered said taping was in September, not October. Somers then claimed she was in so much pain that she "wore a brace" during these one-woman shows she was putting on in Vegas. Well, they dug up her costumer who was asked if he ever knew her to wear a brace, and he said flat out that he did not.

Joyce Dewitt was on the #1 show in America for 7 years. She didn't need to work again. She has enough money to last her the rest of her life.
The smart ones are the ones who strike while the iron is hot, make their money and get out. The dumb ones are the ones who try to milk every last drop out of the cash cow and stay so long that they eventually ruin their reputations.

Suzanne does lie all the time. Her demands of $150,000 per episode (which is what Ritter got) AND 10 percent of the show's profits. No way in hell that was happening. Very few stars get a cut of the profits.
She made most of her fortune off of selling crappy products and (sometimes dangerous) diet and health advice to naïve and desperate fraus. About on par with the TV evangelists bilking the clueless fundies watching their programming.

R41 a lot of people claim they wanted Jack and Janet to end up together. That’s ridiculous. If they had a Romantic spark it would’ve happened sooner. In fact TC should’ve ended a year or so after Priscilla joined. The premise was clearly ran into the ground by the time it ended in 1984.
R100 Joyce said hardly any of this in the true Hollywood story. She never once called Hollywood Hollyweird. Where did you get the Mary Cadorette part? Mary said Joyce told her if you feel any tension, it has nothing to do with you. This is when they were filming the final episodes of TC.

IIRC, short hair was far more common in the 70s and wasn't the sort of class marker a "can I speak to the manager" hairstyle is today. (Even MTM in Ordinary People had short hair)
And yes, Joyce had a hot body. She was the Kate Jackson of Three's Company
by Anonymous | reply 137 | June 9, 2019 7:14 PM |

Did anyone ever see the stage production of "3C," which was a dark deconstruction of Three's Company?
Janet was an alcoholic who didn't wear any underwear under that long T-shirt and got felt up — graphically — by Mr. Roper. Jack's first entrance was totally nude. And Anna Chlumsky was Chrissy in the original cast.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | June 9, 2019 8:40 PM |
R143 no but I wanted to see the drag show version of TC that was on a few years back
They even recreated the opening credits!
by Anonymous | reply 144 | June 9, 2019 8:42 PM |
Suzanne Somers was a noted fame and glory hound. After the first few episodes of TC had taped, she went up to her publicist or manager or whatever and told him "Make me as famous as Farrah Fawcett".
She should have been happy with the way things were. She was famous and rich and the show was popular and everyone was making good money. But that wasn't good enough for her, she wanted MORE MORE MORE and that's what led to her downfall. Her career spent the next 10 years in the toilet and only rebounded due to the TGIF show I mentioned above.
Speaking of which, how hot was Sasha Mitchell back in the day?
by Anonymous | reply 145 | June 9, 2019 8:51 PM |
You'd think Miller/Boyett wouldn't have wanted the notoriously difficult Somers to headline one of their shows after the Valerie debacle.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | June 9, 2019 9:02 PM |
Oh tell me about it. Valerie is so notorious to work for, she's legendary in that regard.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | June 9, 2019 9:09 PM |
What downfall? Somers is a hundred millionaire and still recognized. DeWitt is a nobody.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | June 9, 2019 9:09 PM |
The thing is if the Suzanne Somers thing happened today, she would get unwavering support from Twitter, etc. The whole pay equity issue has been a big topic the last few years (ie. Michelle Williams/Mark Wahlberg in that Ridley Scott film).
They would definitely say she should get as much as John Ritter.
No doubt back then, Somers acted a fool and was unprofessional. When she "reunited" with DeWitt years back, she still brushed it off as her standing up for women's rights, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | June 9, 2019 9:12 PM |
Can you name any roles Suzanne Somers had from 1981-1991 off the top of your head?
by Anonymous | reply 150 | June 9, 2019 9:12 PM |
John Ritter was not a nobody, but country music royalty.
by Anonymous | reply 151 | June 9, 2019 9:12 PM |
Y'all have a hugely exaggerated notion of SS's money.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | June 9, 2019 9:13 PM |
R152 is right! And there was a previous thread on this so shut up.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | June 9, 2019 9:35 PM |
Ritter was making 50k, not 150k. Only people like Carroll O’Connor and Alan Alda were making in the 150k range (and later Larry Hagman, who was friend and with O’connor). Somers and dewitt were each making 30k.
The brouhaha was that Somers was never asking for parity — she was asking for way, way more. So it’s easy to see why Ritter and DeWitt thought she was a selfish cunt. She can spin it any way she wants now she’s full of fucking shit. And to ask for that kind of money was balls — she wasn’t even as valuable to the show as Ritter..
That said, I’ve always thought the producers should have Just fired her — there was something sick and sadistic about how they escorted her separately and made her those humiliating phone call tags at the end — that are mostly cut out now of syndication. I totally believe those producers did treat women like shit. If Somers had been savvier she could have used that angle to get support by bonding with JDW and both asking for 50k. But that would have meant less $$$ for her and her hubby so....
I remember that THS and the exact cadence JDW said “they LIED...TO MA FACE!!!”
by Anonymous | reply 154 | June 9, 2019 9:43 PM |
I thought that she was adorable. Janet was supposed to be the "cute" and "perky" roommate, so the hairstyle was perfect for the character, and it was flattering for Joyce too. In the first season or two, she had longer hair; it was the early 80s that she had the shorter hairstyle, which was very stylish at the time (in part because of Dorothy Hamil, Mary Lou Retton, and Princess Diana).

R154 the producers did want to let her go. They were really fed up not knowing if she was going to show up and work or not. ABC didn’t want to hurt the brand, so they had her in the opening credits and the least way she could hurt the show was put her in the tag at the end. The E True Hollywood Story is on YouTube about what went down.

What dirt did Jennilee Harrison have on Hollywood producers? How else do you explain the bizarre decision to cast her as Jamie Ewing, JR's long lost cousin, on Dallas in 1984?
What an odd casting choice, did the Dallas producers see old Three's Company episodes and say to themselves, "Let's get her, she's wonderful in that scene where Jack Tripper's ironing board attacks her! She'll be great fighting for control of Ewing Oil on a night time soap opera and going head to head with JR, I just know it!"
It was fucking bizarre

The book goes into great depth about what happened, even more so than the E Hollywood story. Suzanne and her husband clearly bit off more than they could chew. And it wasn't just the salary, they wanted ten percent ownership of the show. (Alan Alda and Carroll O Connor didn't even have that).
They tried to reunite the girls for a tribute to John Ritter at the Emmy awards just weeks after he passed. Joyce sent a huge list of demands that had to be agreed upon before she agreed, including standing far apart from Suzanne and not having to actually acknowledge her during the tribute. They wound up getting Henry Winkler to do it instead.

R169 it was a mistake making her schmuck husband her manager. The TC TV movie, Suzanne was really pissed at Alan when the producers didn’t play ball with her. If it was just Suzanne with the proper representation, they probably could’ve worked something out. But that would mean John and Joyce would’ve gotten more too. But they would’ve never gotten part ownership of the show. ALL the actors deserved more. The producers were really greedy fucks.

John Ritter really was the star of the show. He could do all of the physical comedy. Suzanne, and to that extent, her character of Chrissy, was your stereotypical dumb blonde and replaceable. Which they did. She voted for Trump and is a hardcore GOP faithful and has been for years.
Joyce is the better person and the better actress.

Suzanne Somers has financially benefited from advocating medical treatments and cures that have no basis or support from the medical world. That's dangerous and I don't care if she's made millions or what, she's used her fame to endanger others and I can't respect her for that.

A friend's father worked on TC and we were in high school and got to many of the tapings, at least during the first season. Everyone loved John and Joyce. Both great people and super professional. They loved Suzanne as well, early on. She knew her lines and knew the blocking before anyone. After she became a media sensation, she started flubbing her lines often by cracking up. Everyone started getting tired of it because it seemed like she was trying to imitate Goldie Hawn from Laugh in. No one wanted Suzanne to leave. They were all scared it would kill off the show but when it didn't, they were relieved to have her gone, but all believed something was missing when she left.
Joyce was dating Carson's accountant, Bushkin after she and Ray broke up and he did indeed negotiate her a very favorable contract. It was how she's been able to essentially not do anything for decades.
Everyone auditioned for TC females. John was always going to be in it and he was just a great choice. Ann Reinking tried out for Janet. You want to hear weird, Joyce also auditioned for Pinky Toscadero on Happy Days because she was already under contract to ABC.

DeWitt - Brings to mind Addison DeWitt of All About Eve.

Suzanne Somers wanted the same pay as Alan Alda ("MASH"). By that time, TV bigwigs had seen "Charlies Angels" survive Farrah Fawcett's exit and decided "fuck it, let SS walk."
If SS had had a respected agent, instead of her husband, doing the negotiating, the parties probably could have come to a reasonable agreement (for women actors of that era).
