Joyce DeWitt in Three's Company

What an unappealing woman. Did straight guys really find this look appealing in the 70s and early 80s?

by Anonymousreply 253September 21, 2019 3:00 AM

Well, she did have one thing going for, a hole between her legs.

by Anonymousreply 1June 7, 2019 7:44 PM

I hated her more than the heat of a 1000 suns

by Anonymousreply 2June 7, 2019 7:45 PM

R1 lame. I meant more like her hairstyle and aesthetic.

by Anonymousreply 3June 7, 2019 7:46 PM

We just love Dame May Joyce DeWitt!

by Anonymousreply 4June 7, 2019 7:48 PM

She was never cast to be the sexpot in the show, but she was pretty, and she played the sensible one. Different aesthetic altogether.

by Anonymousreply 5June 7, 2019 7:55 PM

r3, and I meant Joyce was a homely, untalented, hog, who could only count being technically fuckable as a positive.

by Anonymousreply 6June 7, 2019 7:55 PM

But OP, she had a great pair of L'Eggs!

by Anonymousreply 7June 7, 2019 7:58 PM

What R5 said. She was the counter to Chrissy and was meant to be average and sensible.

by Anonymousreply 8June 7, 2019 8:00 PM

I think she was prettier then Suzanne Somers , with her two ugly ponytails and bouncing boobs .

by Anonymousreply 9June 7, 2019 8:03 PM

I really found that look on women appealing.

by Anonymousreply 10June 7, 2019 8:04 PM

I have a aunt who still holds on to that look, short black hair black eyeliner around the entire eye. My uncle has been with her for over 30 years so I guess it turns him on?

by Anonymousreply 11June 7, 2019 8:08 PM

Thish ish a ssshuper sheventies shtyle!

by Anonymousreply 12June 7, 2019 8:11 PM

I thought Suzanne Somers was unappealing also. I only liked Mr. Roper and The Regal Beagle.

by Anonymousreply 13June 7, 2019 8:14 PM

Poor Joyce. I think Suzanne Somers was ugly in the face.

And in the r7 commercial, she has a great little bod.

But goes to show ya, a butterface dumb blonde with big and bouncy boobs will trump anything else.

by Anonymousreply 14June 7, 2019 8:19 PM

She looked like Stockard Channing who looked like Tom Hanks in drag.

by Anonymousreply 15June 7, 2019 8:20 PM

That bitch was so fuckin’ annoying, she had us headin’ for the hills.

by Anonymousreply 16June 7, 2019 8:21 PM

SS was very pretty the first few years, then she became a clown.

by Anonymousreply 17June 7, 2019 8:22 PM

She was absolutely adorable.

by Anonymousreply 18June 7, 2019 8:22 PM

R16, I laughed!

Chrissy with her ditzy act was way more annoying and unappealing.

by Anonymousreply 19June 7, 2019 8:23 PM

Joyce sounded like Spritle from Speed Racer.

by Anonymousreply 20June 7, 2019 8:35 PM

Joyce was sooooo coked up on Three's Company.

by Anonymousreply 21June 7, 2019 9:00 PM

Yesh

by Anonymousreply 22June 7, 2019 9:08 PM

She was no Bonnie Franklin.

by Anonymousreply 23June 7, 2019 9:18 PM

Is she still alive?

by Anonymousreply 24June 7, 2019 9:20 PM

It's strange to think now, but back in the day Joyce was one half of Hollywood's biggest supercouple. Joyce and Ray Buktenica were THE Hollywood It couple (rivalled only by Farrah and Lee Majors) of the '70s. Before there was Brangelina there was Joytenica! Also, heard it from Ray himself that Joyce had an abnormally hairy taint...

by Anonymousreply 25June 7, 2019 9:33 PM

Joyce was actually pretty cute before she Pat Benatar'd herself.

by Anonymousreply 26June 7, 2019 9:52 PM

by Anonymousreply 28June 7, 2019 10:04 PM

SHE WAS MY DREAM GIRL!!!

by Anonymousreply 30June 8, 2019 12:56 AM

she was also a complete bitch to suzanne summers when she was having the salary dispute over three s company. Sommers was being paid a fraction of what the male actors on the sitcom were and she went to war against the network. You know DeWitt had to be making peanuts comparitativley as well. Instead of fighting along with Sommers for more money she sided with the network. Sommers has the last laugh tho. Dewitt has a net worth about 4 mil and sommers is in excess of 100 mil today

by Anonymousreply 31June 8, 2019 1:29 AM

R31 = Suzanne Somers.

by Anonymousreply 32June 8, 2019 4:12 AM

DeWitt -4 million? More like 40 thousand.

by Anonymousreply 33June 8, 2019 4:16 AM

$he had the lucrative L'Eggs endorsement$$$$$

by Anonymousreply 34June 8, 2019 4:18 AM

Is there anyone from that show that you cunts don't hate?

by Anonymousreply 35June 8, 2019 5:16 AM

Was "Hello Larry" a well-deserved spin-off?

by Anonymousreply 36June 8, 2019 5:18 AM

Portland is a long way from L.A..

by Anonymousreply 37June 8, 2019 5:21 AM

The producers were cheapskates, and hired a trio of nobodies (though Ritter and Dewitt were being groomed by ABC to be in a sitcom).

by Anonymousreply 39June 8, 2019 5:23 AM

OP, I don't know, but you've certainly come to the right place to ask straight men about the chicks they find attractive.

by Anonymousreply 40June 8, 2019 5:25 AM

I think a lot of you are too hard on Joyce De Witt. She had great chemistry with Ritter, was a good comedienne, and had a pretty decent bod. If you want to see untalented, look at Mary Cadorette who replaced the roommates in the spinoff, getting rid of the Dewitt and Priscilla Barnes sunk the show. Three's Company is a classic (which is why 40 years later, we are still talking about it). Joyce kind of reminds me of Joan Jett in the later seasons. If they wanted a spinoff that the audience wanted to see, they should have had Jack and Janet hook up. Ritter thought he was the main draw, but it was always an ensemble show, which is one reasons The Ropers failed............

by Anonymousreply 41June 8, 2019 5:30 AM

Speaking as a straight man, Joyce DeWitt was very cute and very doable. The OP is a bitter old queen who has no clue what's attractive to heterosexual men. The same goes double for R6.

by Anonymousreply 48June 8, 2019 6:08 PM

R35 I don't know, Three's Company is one of the most popular shows on DL

I want the dirt on how Joycee and Susie ganged up on poor Tony winning Ann Wedgworth, he played sexy cougar divorcee Lana Shields, and had her fired from the show

by Anonymousreply 49June 8, 2019 6:16 PM

Remember the TV Land Three's Company 40th anniversary reunion from 2017? Joyce wouldn't shut the fuck up! She was so overjoyed, she hadn't received that much attention in over 30 years

Also Joyce made sure that NO ONE was to mention Suzanne Somers' name in her presence, I believe Joyce referred to her as "the first blonde we had"

by Anonymousreply 50June 8, 2019 6:24 PM

I remember! She was a fucking cunt!

by Anonymousreply 51June 8, 2019 7:03 PM

JDW was a consultant on the Three's Company tell-all TV movie, and I remember there was a scene shoehorned at the beginning where she was being sought after to play some Shakespearean role when she was cast in Three's Company.

Can't you just see her insisting on the inclusion of that important scene?

by Anonymousreply 52June 8, 2019 7:07 PM

by Anonymousreply 53June 8, 2019 7:13 PM

R52 I saw that TV movie. Mind you I also saw her appear on some Suzanne Somers show where they apparently hadn’t spoken for 30 years. This was after John Ritter has died.

by Anonymousreply 54June 8, 2019 7:14 PM

Kris jenner's signature look

by Anonymousreply 55June 8, 2019 7:16 PM

Joyce is cool. Suzanne Somers is a hardcore Republican faithful, you should be hating her.

And it was Somers who was hated by Ritter and Dewitt for essentially holding the show hostage for more money. She wanted a dramatic raise and to be made the star of the show. When that didn't happen, she went on strike which led to her eventual elimination from the show. And yes, she eventually did make up with both of them.

by Anonymousreply 56June 8, 2019 7:17 PM

R56 I have to admit. I had an open mind about what happened with her firing from Three’s Company but watch Somers being interviewed. She claims she was taking the equal pay stance, but her story continually changes. In one story she says her husband went into a meeting with the network execs alone, in another she retells it that she went in there with him!!

The blunt truth (from all stories) was Somers and her husband believed she was the biggest star on the planet. They went to negotiate her contract and said if she didn’t receive the highest amount for a TV star per episode (at that time) she would go on strike. When they refused to pay it, Somers didn’t show up to the studio. She was then in breach of her contract. She and the husband still wouldn’t back down and they forced her to honour the remainder of her contract by filming one scene an episode on the telephone, taped after everyone had gone home!

Somers wasn’t interested in making sure DeWitt and she got the same money as John Ritter. She wanted to be on the biggest salary.

by Anonymousreply 57June 8, 2019 7:26 PM

I have always liked Somers and found her to be rather endearing, however, I also think she's a compulsive liar and a con-artist and wouldn't trust her as far as I could throw her, so I pretty much don't buy any of her tales about Three's Company

by Anonymousreply 58June 8, 2019 8:42 PM

R48, You're EXACTLY what I'm talking about. You're a waste of time.

by Anonymousreply 59June 8, 2019 8:50 PM

by Anonymousreply 62June 8, 2019 9:53 PM

The hair is what made Joyce look unattractive. She has a nice face and body.

Suzanne Somers seems like a cash cow for her husband.

by Anonymousreply 63June 8, 2019 10:05 PM

That hair had to go.

by Anonymousreply 64June 8, 2019 10:09 PM

I grew up on Three's Company thanks to my mother, who watched it frequently in the '70s–'80s. Joyce brought the sardonic, intelligent energy to the show, while John Ritter and Suzanne Somers were the goofs. She was certainly not the eye candy on that show; both Somers and Priscilla Barnes were the pretty ones. John Ritter was quite hot too, which left Joyce kind of sticking out like a sore thumb. Her hairstyles didn't help either.

by Anonymousreply 83June 9, 2019 3:19 AM

You people are crazy. She was very cute.

by Anonymousreply 84June 9, 2019 3:24 AM

Bushkin‘s book is interesting. Joyce was more attractive than Suzanne

by Anonymousreply 85June 9, 2019 3:24 AM

R83:

That was only true during the Roper years. Joyce became a dreadful hack as a comedienne shortly after they hacked her curls. That dreadful rhinoplasty was the final nail in the Janet Wood you describe...

I see lots of postings online (Youtube and Sitcoms Online) from straight men who found Joyce to be attractive/hot in her TC days. Many seem to prefer her over Somers.

I though she was more on the cute side, but yeah the hairstyles she had the shows didn't do her any favors. The dowdy clothes they had her wear at times did also. I also agree that the nose job she had towards the end of the show was a bad idea. Her somewhat bigger than average Italian nose suited her face.

by Anonymousreply 88June 9, 2019 4:25 AM

It's the '70s version of Ginger vs. Mary Ann.

by Anonymousreply 89June 9, 2019 4:43 AM

R88 It was all about the hair. That straight do just didnt suit her. At least during that time.

by Anonymousreply 95June 9, 2019 12:09 PM

It was a fun show to watch, but the producers and network were awful to the two women leads. Supposedly, it was very, very bad.

by Anonymousreply 96June 9, 2019 12:25 PM

OP, you’re a jerk. You’re also either really young, or perhaps from another country.

Joyce DeWitt is an American national treasure.

Every week, millions of people across America tuned in to watch her, and the rest of an ensemble, who we all grew to rely on, so that we could tune out for 30 minutes, and laugh our assess off. As a kid, I never looked at her on the screen, & thought she was unappealing. She was a helluva lot better than my absolutely insane mother, that much, I know.

She was adorable.

by Anonymousreply 97June 9, 2019 12:27 PM

I met her at Barnes and Noble a few years back when she starring in the local production of NUNSENSE, she was very sweet but made sure to mention to get tickets for me and my family for NUNSENSE because they were still available....

by Anonymousreply 98June 9, 2019 1:13 PM

She was like me only never got a starring or even an "and/as" credit

by Anonymousreply 99June 9, 2019 1:26 PM

Joyce's bitterness during the E True Hollywood Story on Three's Company is legendary, that Interview should if made her THE patron saint of the DL

She throws major shade at Jennilee Harrison, "the producers needed to find an actress who could actually, you know ACT", the producers, Hollywood , which she calls HOLLYWEIRD , and Suzanne multiple times, "Suzanne lies, that's what she does, she's always lied!". Even poor Mary Cardorette didn't get away unscathed from cruel Joyce, Mary said , "We were rehearsing Three's a Crowd and Joyce comes into the studio and sees me and goes, "Who the hell are you and why are you in our studio"? I was so embarrassed".

She then found herself in the mid 80s when she met a spiritual guru and began to meditate and she left Hollywood, sure Jan, to travel the world with her spiritual guru for 8 years

Bitch wasn't getting any work

by Anonymousreply 100June 9, 2019 1:43 PM

Why couldn't she go back to performing Shakespeare?

by Anonymousreply 101June 9, 2019 1:46 PM

America’s lil HoBag

by Anonymousreply 102June 9, 2019 2:06 PM

Suzanne Somers was and continues to be a lying sack of shit.

From that E Hollywood story: She claims the reason she didn't return to work after the strike was over in October was because she had "broken ribs" from a Carson show taping the day before. Except their researchers discovered said taping was in September, not October. Somers then claimed she was in so much pain that she "wore a brace" during these one-woman shows she was putting on in Vegas. Well, they dug up her costumer who was asked if he ever knew her to wear a brace, and he said flat out that he did not.

by Anonymousreply 103June 9, 2019 2:23 PM

I miss John Ritter.

I always thought Jack and Janet would be hot together.

“You go make talk!”

by Anonymousreply 104June 9, 2019 2:24 PM

Somers has a net worth of approx. 100 million dollars. If the cast had followed her lead and demanded more money they might have received it. She clearly has some business sense and was likely the smartest person on that show.

by Anonymousreply 105June 9, 2019 2:33 PM

^Ha! Lots of that is probably from Step By Step and all those Thigh/Buttmaster videos she did.

by Anonymousreply 106June 9, 2019 2:38 PM

Not to mention the Suz was the dancing monkey for her husband in those negotiations

by Anonymousreply 107June 9, 2019 2:47 PM

The Three's Company parody video was funny but why didn't they have Nicole snort like Chreessy in Spanish?

by Anonymousreply 108June 9, 2019 2:50 PM

Joyce Dewitt was on the #1 show in America for 7 years. She didn't need to work again. She has enough money to last her the rest of her life.

The smart ones are the ones who strike while the iron is hot, make their money and get out. The dumb ones are the ones who try to milk every last drop out of the cash cow and stay so long that they eventually ruin their reputations.

See Barr, Roseanne.

by Anonymousreply 109June 9, 2019 3:10 PM

Fake tans have not really improved in quality from the 70's. This is what I learned from this thread.

by Anonymousreply 111June 9, 2019 3:13 PM

Suzanne does lie all the time. Her demands of $150,000 per episode (which is what Ritter got) AND 10 percent of the show's profits. No way in hell that was happening. Very few stars get a cut of the profits.

She made most of her fortune off of selling crappy products and (sometimes dangerous) diet and health advice to naïve and desperate fraus. About on par with the TV evangelists bilking the clueless fundies watching their programming.

by Anonymousreply 112June 9, 2019 3:17 PM

Erin Moran was on a #1 show too, and she wound up in a trailer park.

by Anonymousreply 113June 9, 2019 3:26 PM

by Anonymousreply 117June 9, 2019 3:30 PM

You have to give Suzanne Somers credit where it's due - she was written off in Hollywood with no career left, but she came back with a huge business and is wealthier than most A-Listers.

by Anonymousreply 118June 9, 2019 3:31 PM

The credit goes to her tits & those who allowed the Miller/Boyet rampage

by Anonymousreply 119June 9, 2019 3:33 PM

Sorry but Erin Moran was a talentless shit. Remember when she went on one of those weight loss shows?....when she weighted 140 pounds!!! She later admitted she was just trying to get work...any work in the industry. I think she was also a druggie. Joyce was wise and saved her money.

by Anonymousreply 120June 9, 2019 3:37 PM

R41 a lot of people claim they wanted Jack and Janet to end up together. That’s ridiculous. If they had a Romantic spark it would’ve happened sooner. In fact TC should’ve ended a year or so after Priscilla joined. The premise was clearly ran into the ground by the time it ended in 1984.

R100 Joyce said hardly any of this in the true Hollywood story. She never once called Hollywood Hollyweird. Where did you get the Mary Cadorette part? Mary said Joyce told her if you feel any tension, it has nothing to do with you. This is when they were filming the final episodes of TC.

by Anonymousreply 121June 9, 2019 3:55 PM

[quote] Joyce was wise and saved her money.

Good for her if that’s true but how do you know this?

Suzanne appears that be the richest - though Jennilee must be living quite comfortably having married Cybill Shepherd’s ex who is a doctor.

by Anonymousreply 122June 9, 2019 4:00 PM

It was a stupid, slapstick show and Somers recognized it for what it was - a gravy train with a limited shelf life. As others have pointed out, she has done very well for herself after the fact. DeWitt has always come across as having an axe to grind while Somers could care less.

by Anonymousreply 123June 9, 2019 4:02 PM

R121 maybe I'm confusing different unauthorized biographies but she said those things and more nit just in the THS but other bios and my book on the BTS of the show

She also said she was delighted when Three's a Crowd was cancelled because of how the TC producers treated her

by Anonymousreply 124June 9, 2019 4:09 PM

IIRC, short hair was far more common in the 70s and wasn't the sort of class marker a "can I speak to the manager" hairstyle is today. (Even MTM in Ordinary People had short hair)

And yes, Joyce had a hot body. She was the Kate Jackson of Three's Company

by Anonymousreply 137June 9, 2019 6:14 PM

Joyce would have made for a better Mrs. King!

by Anonymousreply 138June 9, 2019 6:16 PM

Suzanne Somers' pussy STANK!

by Anonymousreply 139June 9, 2019 6:23 PM

Joyce should have done that Baby Boom TV series instead of Kate Jackson. She would have been perfect.

Joyce was smokin’, actually. She had a better ass and better legs than SS. And once that pixie cut grew out, it suited her well.

Menses like a tights little body with a tights little booty and tightses little pussy! That’s why hot, straight menses like Joyces DeWittses.

by Anonymousreply 142June 9, 2019 6:31 PM

Did anyone ever see the stage production of "3C," which was a dark deconstruction of Three's Company?

Janet was an alcoholic who didn't wear any underwear under that long T-shirt and got felt up — graphically —  by Mr. Roper. Jack's first entrance was totally nude. And Anna Chlumsky was Chrissy in the original cast.

R143 no but I wanted to see the drag show version of TC that was on a few years back

They even recreated the opening credits!

by Anonymousreply 144June 9, 2019 7:42 PM

Suzanne Somers was a noted fame and glory hound. After the first few episodes of TC had taped, she went up to her publicist or manager or whatever and told him "Make me as famous as Farrah Fawcett".

She should have been happy with the way things were. She was famous and rich and the show was popular and everyone was making good money. But that wasn't good enough for her, she wanted MORE MORE MORE and that's what led to her downfall. Her career spent the next 10 years in the toilet and only rebounded due to the TGIF show I mentioned above.

Speaking of which, how hot was Sasha Mitchell back in the day?

by Anonymousreply 145June 9, 2019 7:51 PM

You'd think Miller/Boyett wouldn't have wanted the notoriously difficult Somers to headline one of their shows after the Valerie debacle.

by Anonymousreply 146June 9, 2019 8:02 PM

Oh tell me about it. Valerie is so notorious to work for, she's legendary in that regard.

by Anonymousreply 147June 9, 2019 8:09 PM

What downfall? Somers is a hundred millionaire and still recognized. DeWitt is a nobody.

by Anonymousreply 148June 9, 2019 8:09 PM

The thing is if the Suzanne Somers thing happened today, she would get unwavering support from Twitter, etc. The whole pay equity issue has been a big topic the last few years (ie. Michelle Williams/Mark Wahlberg in that Ridley Scott film).

They would definitely say she should get as much as John Ritter.

No doubt back then, Somers acted a fool and was unprofessional. When she "reunited" with DeWitt years back, she still brushed it off as her standing up for women's rights, etc.

by Anonymousreply 149June 9, 2019 8:12 PM

Can you name any roles Suzanne Somers had from 1981-1991 off the top of your head?

by Anonymousreply 150June 9, 2019 8:12 PM

John Ritter was not a nobody, but country music royalty.

by Anonymousreply 151June 9, 2019 8:12 PM

Y'all have a hugely exaggerated notion of SS's money.

by Anonymousreply 152June 9, 2019 8:13 PM

R152 is right! And there was a previous thread on this so shut up.

by Anonymousreply 153June 9, 2019 8:35 PM

Ritter was making 50k, not 150k. Only people like Carroll O’Connor and Alan Alda were making in the 150k range (and later Larry Hagman, who was friend and with O’connor). Somers and dewitt were each making 30k.

The brouhaha was that Somers was never asking for parity — she was asking for way, way more. So it’s easy to see why Ritter and DeWitt thought she was a selfish cunt. She can spin it any way she wants now she’s full of fucking shit. And to ask for that kind of money was balls — she wasn’t even as valuable to the show as Ritter..

That said, I’ve always thought the producers should have Just fired her — there was something sick and sadistic about how they escorted her separately and made her those humiliating phone call tags at the end — that are mostly cut out now of syndication. I totally believe those producers did treat women like shit. If Somers had been savvier she could have used that angle to get support by bonding with JDW and both asking for 50k. But that would have meant less $$$ for her and her hubby so....

I remember that THS and the exact cadence JDW said “they LIED...TO MA FACE!!!”

by Anonymousreply 154June 9, 2019 8:43 PM

I thought that she was adorable. Janet was supposed to be the "cute" and "perky" roommate, so the hairstyle was perfect for the character, and it was flattering for Joyce too. In the first season or two, she had longer hair; it was the early 80s that she had the shorter hairstyle, which was very stylish at the time (in part because of Dorothy Hamil, Mary Lou Retton, and Princess Diana).

by Anonymousreply 155June 9, 2019 8:45 PM

Only on Datalounge does a thread about Joyce DeWitt compete with a Gay Orgy thread for most popular.

by Anonymousreply 156June 9, 2019 8:47 PM

Why did she say it ma face instead of my face?

by Anonymousreply 157June 9, 2019 8:50 PM

Suz was the sheriff sometime between 1981-91

by Anonymousreply 158June 9, 2019 9:04 PM

R154 the producers did want to let her go. They were really fed up not knowing if she was going to show up and work or not. ABC didn’t want to hurt the brand, so they had her in the opening credits and the least way she could hurt the show was put her in the tag at the end. The E True Hollywood Story is on YouTube about what went down.

by Anonymousreply 159June 9, 2019 9:15 PM

R154 my bad you’ve already have seen it.

by Anonymousreply 164June 9, 2019 10:25 PM

Joyce's lawyer (or whatever he was) boyfriend must've been a genius at money management, because she apparently turned her Three's Company $$$ into a lifetime income. She's barely had to work at all in 35 years.

by Anonymousreply 165June 9, 2019 10:29 PM

What dirt did Jennilee Harrison have on Hollywood producers? How else do you explain the bizarre decision to cast her as Jamie Ewing, JR's long lost cousin, on Dallas in 1984?

What an odd casting choice, did the Dallas producers see old Three's Company episodes and say to themselves, "Let's get her, she's wonderful in that scene where Jack Tripper's ironing board attacks her! She'll be great fighting for control of Ewing Oil on a night time soap opera and going head to head with JR, I just know it!"

It was fucking bizarre

The book goes into great depth about what happened, even more so than the E Hollywood story. Suzanne and her husband clearly bit off more than they could chew. And it wasn't just the salary, they wanted ten percent ownership of the show. (Alan Alda and Carroll O Connor didn't even have that).

They tried to reunite the girls for a tribute to John Ritter at the Emmy awards just weeks after he passed. Joyce sent a huge list of demands that had to be agreed upon before she agreed, including standing far apart from Suzanne and not having to actually acknowledge her during the tribute. They wound up getting Henry Winkler to do it instead.

by Anonymousreply 168June 9, 2019 10:40 PM

RIGHT OR WRONG, I WILL ALWAYS blame the majority of somer's problem on her husband.. HE was the gold digger and still is in the relationship... Poor thing, she doesn't even realize it then or now it seems....

when did somers do "she's the sheriff"? how long did that last? not even a full one season? i know episodes are non existent anywhere...

by Anonymousreply 169June 9, 2019 10:47 PM

Johnny Carson praised me TO MA face on his show!

by Anonymousreply 170June 9, 2019 10:57 PM

R169 it was a mistake making her schmuck husband her manager. The TC TV movie, Suzanne was really pissed at Alan when the producers didn’t play ball with her. If it was just Suzanne with the proper representation, they probably could’ve worked something out. But that would mean John and Joyce would’ve gotten more too. But they would’ve never gotten part ownership of the show. ALL the actors deserved more. The producers were really greedy fucks.

John Ritter really was the star of the show. He could do all of the physical comedy. Suzanne, and to that extent, her character of Chrissy, was your stereotypical dumb blonde and replaceable. Which they did. She voted for Trump and is a hardcore GOP faithful and has been for years.

Joyce is the better person and the better actress.

by Anonymousreply 182June 10, 2019 2:50 PM

R182 makes a good point. Chrissy was replaceable. I can't imagine the show without Janet though.

by Anonymousreply 183June 10, 2019 2:56 PM

R182 I had no idea Suzanne Somers is a deplorable.

by Anonymousreply 184June 10, 2019 3:01 PM

Every time Janet was thrust forward in the plot, the show became tedious.

I recall one particular episode where her dream of being a 40yo ballet star were stoked by a con man.

Some of the worst drivel that show ever produced...

by Anonymousreply 185June 10, 2019 3:16 PM

by Anonymousreply 198June 10, 2019 7:48 PM

Chrissy "Snow"

Jack "Tripper"

Janet "Wood"

For a 1970s formulaic sitcom, John Ritter's physical comedy could be funny at times.

by Anonymousreply 199June 10, 2019 7:55 PM

Suzanne Somers has financially benefited from advocating medical treatments and cures that have no basis or support from the medical world. That's dangerous and I don't care if she's made millions or what, she's used her fame to endanger others and I can't respect her for that.

I like Joyce DeWitt. She may be "washed up" or doing less impressive theater shows or making bitter comments but she's not out there endangering people's lives like Somers is.

Team Joyce DeWitt all the fucking way.

by Anonymousreply 210June 10, 2019 8:40 PM

Did she at least land the laughs in Gypsy? Every time I see that show anywhere these days, every actress playing Rose seems to work against the laughs to make Rose a gritty, disturbed human being. It's annoying.

Suzanne Somers has always been an opportunist.

She would sell her soul for money.

by Anonymousreply 218June 10, 2019 10:24 PM

A friend's father worked on TC and we were in high school and got to many of the tapings, at least during the first season. Everyone loved John and Joyce. Both great people and super professional. They loved Suzanne as well, early on. She knew her lines and knew the blocking before anyone. After she became a media sensation, she started flubbing her lines often by cracking up. Everyone started getting tired of it because it seemed like she was trying to imitate Goldie Hawn from Laugh in. No one wanted Suzanne to leave. They were all scared it would kill off the show but when it didn't, they were relieved to have her gone, but all believed something was missing when she left.

Joyce was dating Carson's accountant, Bushkin after she and Ray broke up and he did indeed negotiate her a very favorable contract. It was how she's been able to essentially not do anything for decades.

Everyone auditioned for TC females. John was always going to be in it and he was just a great choice. Ann Reinking tried out for Janet. You want to hear weird, Joyce also auditioned for Pinky Toscadero on Happy Days because she was already under contract to ABC.

by Anonymousreply 219June 10, 2019 11:18 PM

R185 By no means does it compare to Priscilla Barnes’s “you have no character” moment....

by Anonymousreply 220June 10, 2019 11:21 PM

by Anonymousreply 221June 10, 2019 11:22 PM

R219 about a month or so ago I fell upon a family feud with the TC cast from around 1978 — the Rogers and Larry were on but not Suzanne. So obviously we’ll before the contract negotiations she was causing issues.

by Anonymousreply 225June 10, 2019 11:32 PM

I wonder if John and Joyce resented the way Chrissy's character devolved in order to grab all the attention for herself. I mean she was like a totally different character from the way i she was in the beginning.

by Anonymousreply 226June 10, 2019 11:47 PM

I'm sure they did, r226, but that obviously was not just Suzanne, but the writers and producers of course. They basically made her go from being quirky and funny to "special" and ridiculous. that may be some law of sitcoms: everyone has to become less and less realistic and more and more stupid as time goes on.

by Anonymousreply 227June 11, 2019 12:43 AM

R222, Suzanne almost certainly asked for too much money to do FF.

by Anonymousreply 228June 11, 2019 12:45 AM

by Anonymousreply 229June 11, 2019 12:46 AM

R219 did Joyce invest her money or get into real estate or something? How can you live for 35 years on just a sitcom salary without getting a piece of the show or even residuals for that matter?

Joyce DeWitt has a decidedly unsexy name.

Joyce - just no. Not sexy

DeWitt - Brings to mind Addison DeWitt of All About Eve.

To quote Addison, bitchy theater critic extraordinaire:

"Miss Casswell : Tell me this, do they have auditions for television? Addison DeWitt : That's, uh, all television is, my dear, nothing but auditions."

And now, a lovely little tidbit about Joyce.

Suzanne Somers wanted the same pay as Alan Alda ("MASH"). By that time, TV bigwigs had seen "Charlies Angels" survive Farrah Fawcett's exit and decided "fuck it, let SS walk."

If SS had had a respected agent, instead of her husband, doing the negotiating, the parties probably could have come to a reasonable agreement (for women actors of that era).
