I think a lot of you are too hard on Joyce De Witt. She had great chemistry with Ritter, was a good comedienne, and had a pretty decent bod. Three's Company is a classic (which is why 40 years later, we are still talking about it). Joyce kind of reminds me of Joan Jett in the later seasons. If they wanted a spinoff that the audience wanted to see, they should have had Jack and Janet hook up. Ritter thought he was the main draw, but it was always an ensemble show, which is one reasons The Ropers failed............

They went to negotiate her contract and said if she didn’t receive the highest amount for a TV star per episode (at that time) she would go on strike. When they refused to pay it, Somers didn’t show up to the studio. She was then in breach of her contract. She and the husband still wouldn’t back down and they forced her to honour the remainder of her contract by filming one scene an episode on the telephone, taped after everyone had gone home!

Somers wasn’t interested in making sure DeWitt and she got the same money as John Ritter. She wanted to be on the biggest salary.

Joyce sent a huge list of demands that had to be agreed upon before she agreed, including standing far apart from Suzanne and not having to actually acknowledge her during the tribute. They wound up getting Henry Winkler to do it instead.

For a 1970s formulaic sitcom, John Ritter's physical comedy could be funny at times.

Suzanne Somers has financially benefited from advocating medical treatments and cures that have no basis or support from the medical world. That's dangerous and I don't care if she's made millions or what, she's used her fame to endanger others and I can't respect her for that.

I like Joyce DeWitt. She may be "washed up" or doing less impressive theater shows or making bitter comments but she's not out there endangering people's lives like Somers is.

Someone told me they saw her as Rose in Gypsy maybe 15 years ago at some regional theater and said the production was pure shit, but they were shocked by how great Joyce was in the role. Maybe she just stood out more with the rest of the production falling apart around her.

I have an audio bootleg of Joyce in GYPSY. She was not great. She speaks in that "wife in a sitcom" way. Very not "every day of my life I've had to fight." Better than Lorna Luft, though.

Did she at least land the laughs in Gypsy? Every time I see that show anywhere these days, every actress playing Rose seems to work against the laughs to make Rose a gritty, disturbed human being. It's annoying.

It's been ages since I listened. I might dig it out.

Suzanne Somers has always been an opportunist.

She would sell her soul for money.

A friend's father worked on TC and we were in high school and got to many of the tapings, at least during the first season. Everyone loved John and Joyce. Both great people and super professional. They loved Suzanne as well, early on. She knew her lines and knew the blocking before anyone. After she became a media sensation, she started flubbing her lines often by cracking up. Everyone started getting tired of it because it seemed like she was trying to imitate Goldie Hawn from Laugh in. No one wanted Suzanne to leave. They were all scared it would kill off the show but when it didn't, they were relieved to have her gone, but all believed something was missing when she left.

Joyce was dating Carson's accountant, Bushkin after she and Ray broke up and he did indeed negotiate her a very favorable contract. It was how she's been able to essentially not do anything for decades.

Everyone auditioned for TC females. John was always going to be in it and he was just a great choice. Ann Reinking tried out for Janet. You want to hear weird, Joyce also auditioned for Pinky Toscadero on Happy Days because she was already under contract to ABC.

R219 about a month or so ago I fell upon a family feud with the TC cast from around 1978 — the Rogers and Larry were on but not Suzanne. So obviously we’ll before the contract negotiations she was causing issues.

I wonder if John and Joyce resented the way Chrissy's character devolved in order to grab all the attention for herself. I mean she was like a totally different character from the way i she was in the beginning.

I'm sure they did, r226, but that obviously was not just Suzanne, but the writers and producers of course. They basically made her go from being quirky and funny to "special" and ridiculous. that may be some law of sitcoms: everyone has to become less and less realistic and more and more stupid as time goes on.

Suzanne Somers wanted the same pay as Alan Alda ("MASH"). By that time, TV bigwigs had seen "Charlies Angels" survive Farrah Fawcett's exit and decided "fuck it, let SS walk."

If SS had had a respected agent, instead of her husband, doing the negotiating, the parties probably could have come to a reasonable agreement (for women actors of that era).

I actually think Chrissy was the worst of the three blondes.

Suzanne was getting 30k an episode. That's still a lot of fucking money, especially in 1970's money. Hell, Joyce has done very little since the show went off the air, and she's still a multi-millionaire. Suzanne is just lucky the debacle didn't end her career permanently.

Just for the fuck of it I watched Three's Company season 1 last night, only 6 episodes, and they were fucking terrible. Most episodes are laugh free. The sexism and misogyny and homophobia is just shocking. I don't ever recall liking the first season but after not seeing it for 20 years. Fucking terrible.
