I wish she didn't hold back in studio recordings because her live performances were often amazing. Listen to this live version of "I'll Never Love This Way Again" from 1981. There are several notes here when you can really tell she is related to Whitney. Before I heard her live performances, I had no idea because she really did hold back in the studio versions.

Horrible. Of course she could sing like that but why would she want to? She wasn't dependent on showy, tasteless, vocal gymnastics during her heyday. She was too good for that. That's the stuff of lesser singers.

Well, not only did she grow up singing in the church, she's also related to the legendary Drinkard Singers. With experience and DNA like that, she was bound to become one of the greatest singers of all-time.
