You hear people say this stuff all the time.
But does anyone really ever pray for someone else - especially for people they don't even know?

Fuck no.

I once knew a former fundamentalist Christian (she still believed in God, but became much more open-minded over the years). She once admitted that during her fundie days, when she argued with people, she would end with "I'll pray for you" as a passive-aggressive insult. It was a way of saying, "You need divine intervention to make you a less horrible person, and I'm so wonderful that I'm going to try to help you even though you don't deserve it." I was impressed by her candour in admitting this!

When I say it, I will actually pray for that person, at least once.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 22, 2019 5:42 PM |
Not me no

What if they belong to the Church of Satan? Is it ok for them to offer prayers?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 22, 2019 5:45 PM |
Well, people may say one thing to others but do something completely different when they are alone.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 22, 2019 5:47 PM |
R5 The Church of Satan are really atheists, so to whom would they be praying to? I am a Christian, but I had a conversation with a Hindu woman one time and where we both said we would pray for each other. I don't believe in her religion, but I have no problem with her praying for me to her Gods. I've never understood why atheists get so worked up about people praying for them. If you don't believe, then it is harmless.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 22, 2019 5:51 PM |
OP, it's called a platitude.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 22, 2019 5:54 PM |
Just don’t ever say “It was god’s will”
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 22, 2019 6:03 PM |
R7 I'm sure jesus just LOVES you fellowshipping on DL with all the porn threads....but as long as jesus doesn't see you right? Sounds like you need to pray for yourself first.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 22, 2019 6:27 PM |
R10 Jesus was friends with whores, tax collectors, and other outcasts. If he were on the Earth, today, he would more than likely be on datalounge than hanging out with Franklin Graham. Anything and everything, can be a sin, and all sins are equally bad. A sin is nothing more than an action which causes you to separate yourself from God. Porn and sex can be a sin for one person, but not for another. Just as food, drink, drugs, and money can be a sin for one and not another. It is like Jesus' story of the rich man going to heaven being harder than a camel going through the eye of the needle, many people misinterpret that to mean that just being rich is a sin, but it isn't. The sin is the love of money and focusing your life on the pursuit of money.

R11-loon.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 22, 2019 6:45 PM |
R12 Someone who can't accept that there are Christians who are not fundamentalist whack jobs.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | May 22, 2019 6:49 PM |
R11] this whole “sin” thing you’re spouting is complete bullshit. If a murderer doesn’t love murdering, is murder not a sin ?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 22, 2019 7:05 PM |
There was once a thread many years ago on DL that went:
Everytime you suck a cock -
Jesus weeps.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 22, 2019 7:08 PM |
Southern shit
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 22, 2019 7:10 PM |
R14 That is completely different, and you know it. As God gives life, to take a life through murder, would separate you from God, regardless of whether or not you enjoy it.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 22, 2019 7:11 PM |
The christians who post on the Datalounge are so tiresome. Mealy mouth little wankers.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 22, 2019 7:16 PM |
What I find really annoying is not so much using prayers involving some platitude but people saying everything happens for a reason.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 22, 2019 7:21 PM |
The idiots on here who constantly try and reinforce the idea that Christianity is incompatible with being Gay, Lesbian, or Bisexual, are just telling the intolerant bigots like Westboro that they are in fact correct.

I have a religious relative and yes, she does pray for people. Out loud. And sounds like an automatic message when she does, no feelings involved at all, just a speed chanting. It sounds more like she is trying to call down a demon than a heartfelt prayer, but I guess it's the thought that counts.

I pray that the Trump family will go away, but instead they are being given immortal life.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 22, 2019 7:33 PM |
Yes thank you R20
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 22, 2019 7:48 PM |
Ugh. Why are is the right wing so full of christians when Jesus would have been a socialist? Personally if I say I will pray I will do it, so I won't say it often.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 22, 2019 7:57 PM |
Sorry for the typo.

Another one is "God willing", basically saying, "Think of me throughout the day or otherwise I might get hit by a car and it will be your fault." Also repeating over "In Jesus's name, amen."
I am spiritual and believe strongly in the basic ethics Christ gave us, to love our neighbor as ourselves. Also, anybody with the faith the size of a mustard seed can be forgiven because they are far more sincere in their beliefs than somebody who goes to church every day and gossips about what so-and-so was wearing and how someone didn't sing loud enough or volunteer long enough, etc. I don't necessarily believe in the human idea of hell, but oblivion (ceasing to exist in any form, live or dead) ends the soul, while those who go to the real version of Heaven romp joyfully forever with their loved ones in a way human beings could never dream possible. Anything else is human judgment, and when you point the fingers at someone, four are pointing back at yourself. We can't help but judge (humanity is too filled with shit not to), but leave those flawed creatures to their own misery, and live your own life in happiness and contentment. I find too many Christians believe that happiness in that manner isn't justified for anybody because you can only be a true Christian if you suffer as Christ did. In other words, there are all sorts of theories out there, and most people have stopped living because they are too scared to!

There are some serious nuts on here.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 22, 2019 8:42 PM |
Yes. My dad sent me his nightly list. Included my coworkers family who dealt with their sons suicide 2 years ago. He never met them.

I pray that my ex-boyfriend is happy all the time
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 22, 2019 8:44 PM |
I'm gay and I consider myself (more on the spiritual side ) a Christian. I think a basic belief you posses a soul and that it continues after death by way of a divine creator is the most important element. I've had experiences with ghosts or spirits or whatever you want to call them and am certain of their existence. These interactions have cemented my belief in a creator and after life. Hopefully, this belief in his existence is all God will need from me, other than the obligatory, being an all around great guy. I never say ' I'm gonna pray for you' or any version of that, unless I mean it. It does have a way of making my hair stand on end when people use it superficially. Usually noted by the rehearsed ease in which one offers it. I have an insipid neighbor who says it all the time.

Someone is posting handbills all over Berkeley that exhort people to pray for some random couple of guys because they are "Satanists."
I'm wondering if it's some kind of prank or if it's some totally sincere weirdo.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 23, 2019 4:16 AM |
I tell people "you can keep your prayers, but thank you for your thoughts" or something like that. The whole thing is so childish.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 23, 2019 4:21 AM |
So infantile. Like God is leaning over Debi's house to hear her every prayer.
Thank you and goodnight.

Nancy says she’s praying for Don. Hope she’s doing a little more thank that.
