The ultimate DL Icon. Discuss.
Pure Evil. The biopic with Suzanne Pleshette is a total campfest.

Why is there no Young Leona series on Netflix, showing us her origin story?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | May 14, 2019 12:41 AM |
Nora Dunn played her to perfection on SNL.
There was a great sketch where Tammy Faye and her busted out of Jail and went on crime sprees across the country. With Jim and I think Zsa Zsa Gabor. Jan Hooks played Tammy Baker, Phil Hartman played Jim and Victoria Jackson Zsa Zsa.

[quote]We've overdone Leona.
If they're still making movies about 100-year-old comic book characters, I think there's still a little more drama to be mined from Leona's story. Who hurt her? Who loved her? What did she need?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 14, 2019 12:56 AM |
If only Leona could somehow magically have lived into the Trump era. Would she have been an ambassador? press secretary? secretary of state?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 14, 2019 1:01 AM |
Leona and Trump absolutely hated each other. If she had lived longer she would be a Datalounge icon.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 14, 2019 1:04 AM |
Leona once threw a glass of red wine on Trump's suit and he sent her the dry-cleaning bill. She sent him back the exact same suit, but all in red. I hope on Christmas Eve, she pulls a Jacob Marley and haunts him.

She was the most egregious example of a face that matched the personality. You couldn't make up a face that screamed "nasty, evil bitch" any more than the reality.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 14, 2019 1:22 AM |
I have to say that while she was excessive, I've often dreamed, after experiencing horrible customer service, of buying the hotel, store, restaurant, etc... and going around and firing employees who are bad at their jobs and that do not do things correctly.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 14, 2019 1:24 AM |
R12, I bet those employees dream of their evil fat cat employers going to prison

by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 14, 2019 1:29 AM |
R13 Excuse for thinking, that the owners of customer service focused businesses, should care more about their customers than mollycoddling their employees. Leona knew people were paying high prices to stay at her hotels and that therefore they deserved the best service.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 14, 2019 1:33 AM |
Her eyebrows were a bit much.

She did love her son, and made her grandchildren agree to visit their father's grave once a year in order to inherit (they had to sign in at the cemetery office).
She disinherited two of the grandchildren for not complying.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 14, 2019 1:37 AM |
R16, she cared more about herself than the employees AND the customers. You sound like a Republican
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 14, 2019 1:40 AM |

Both Ginger Rogers and Carol Channing mentioned Leona in their autobiographies and and not a flattering way. Ironically, I saw Leona in person at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood California (as opposed to Hollywood South Dakota) outside the theater talking to Anne Jeffreys when I went to see "Miss Saigon". She was all smiles and charm, and that changed her facial features drastically. Younger pictures of her are quite flattering, but her meanness was very evident in her face as she got old.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 14, 2019 2:19 AM |
If you look up the term "resting bitch face," you'll find Leona's picture as an example.

She was basically the female version of Trump. But unlike Trump, leana was actually a billionaire and competent in business. And not like Trump who filed business bankruptcy 6 fucking times.
But both people are trash with money.

I remember a series of commercials - or was it newspaper ads. or both? - that ran in New York in the 80s. The gist was Leona saying, "I wouldn't settle for a lumpy mattress/fill in the blank complaint in my hotel room, why should you?!"
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 14, 2019 3:01 AM |
In my mind, Leona is forever intertwined with Spy Magazine and Donald Trump. Here’s a link to the Spy Archives.

The last 30 seconds of this video gives a tour of Leona's private rooftop pool. Allegedly she'd have her staff serve her shrimp cocktail as she swam. She lived in the suite shown. It's for rent, but there is no longer access to the rooftop pool. There's old posters of the Empire State building, which she owned.

The TV movie about Leona is one of the few films where I did not laugh at seeing the aging Lloyd Bridges. I thought he was very touching, and I would have loved to have seen more of his first wife or found out more about her. There is little to none about her available, but it is very clear that once Leona set her sights on Harry, there was no turning back. I love Suzanne as she's feeding Harry and says "just like buttah", and I believe this was even before "Linda Richman" made that comment famous on SNL. I hope both Suzanne and Leona are in heaven together, with Leona only allowed there if she works as Suzanne's maid.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | May 14, 2019 4:31 AM |
Heaven wasn't good enough for Leona -- insufficient fluffy towels, and the pool was unheated.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | May 14, 2019 4:54 AM |
Leona's hotel where she lived, The Park Lane probably isn't long for this world. They've already tried to demolish it once, but the economy put a stop to it. There's already a new tower lined up to be built, but it's on hold.
My feelings are mixed. It's hideous, but I think it does have it's place on the Central Park South skyline. If they do tear it down I won't be too upset.

LuPone would be a great Leona. Tovah Feldshuh has played her I think.
Suzanne Pleshette said she and Leona had mutual friends but she refrained from offering any opinion of how those friends viewed Leona. She and Trump also had many friends in common although Pleshette was a major Clinton supporter and was at every Democratic fundraiser in Beverly Hills. Then again I think Trump was still a Democrat back then. Lol.
Leona has crossed my mind many times in the last few years as I wished she had been the one with political aspirations. I wouldn’t want to work for her but I wouldn’t mind her as my president.

Was Leona Helmsley Jewish?
by Anonymous | reply 71 | December 31, 2019 5:15 AM |
Yes r71, apparently she was self hating and didn't want anyone to know. The jews of NYC certainly didn't want to claim her either...
Leona Helmsley was born Leona Mindy Rosenthal in Marbletown, New York, to Polish-Jewish immigrants, Ida (née Popkin), a homemaker, and Morris Rosenthal, a hatmaker.[3] Her family moved to Brooklyn while she was still a girl, and moved six more times before settling in Manhattan. After dropping out of Abraham Lincoln High School to seek her fortune,[2] she changed her name several times over a short period – from Lee Roberts, Mindy Roberts, and Leni Roberts – before finally going by Leona Mindy Roberts[4] and having her surname legally changed to Roberts.[5]

Queen of Bitches Leona was a HUGE story in the late 80s. People loved hearing the details about how awful she was to everyone.

When I was a kid, we were in the same hospital elevator numerous times with her husband who was just an old mess. My mother described him as "defeated."
by Anonymous | reply 76 | December 31, 2019 7:57 AM |
Hell was made for her:
[quote]Helmsley was known for "tyrannizing her employees".[47] Alan Dershowitz, while breakfasting with her at one of the Helmsley hotels, received a cup of tea with a tiny bit of water spilled on the saucer. Helmsley grabbed the cup from the waiter and smashed it on the floor, then told him to beg for his job.[48] In another account of Helmsley's behavior, she had a barbecue pit constructed for her home.[49] The work was performed by Eugene Brennan, a personal friend of Jeremiah McCarthy, the chief engineer of Helmsley-Spear.[49] When the final bill came to $13,000, she refused to pay, citing shoddy workmanship.[49] When McCarthy pleaded with her to honor the bill, citing the favor done on his behalf and informing her that Brennan had six children to support, Helmsley replied, "Why didn't he keep his pants on? Then he wouldn't need the money".[49]
