Which musician/band/artist deserves a movie next?
It seems to be all the rage in Hollywood now, with the success of "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Rocketman."
You just know that Madonna, Janet Jackson and Mariah are already talking to their agents.
"I want a movie too!!"
But whose life would ACTUALLY make a really good movie?

Freddie Mercury was a fascinating guy, with a lot of depth.

There was a legit Blondie biopic in the planning stages, with a lot of controversy about who would play Debbie Harry. Eventually Kirsten Dunst was in the running to play her, with Harry's blessing. A screenplay was written, the title was "Heart of Glass: The Story of Blondie." It seemed seriously in the works but I can't find any news stories about it post-2007. Oh well.
I always thought The B-52's story would have made an interesting film.
Bands or musicians with a rocky road to success or hardships or public struggles are the ones that would make the most interesting biopics. Or maybe they just had weird careers. Like The Runaways film from years back (I think called 'Cherry Bomb'?) They weren't super well known but their story was so strange it made an interesting film, with Kristen Stewart as a young Joan Jett. Like... maybe a film about Throbbing Gristle would be hard to make boring, even if the general public doesn't know about them? Also maybe: The Plasmatics? There's a lot of interesting material there.

Not necessarily.
Hidden Figures was a movie about three relatively unknown women who worked for NASA, and their story was so compelling and Oscar worthy.
Same for Freddie Mercury and Bohemian Rhapsody, although Freddie was much more famous.
Movies really should be all about the story and how it moves people, and NOT so much about selling something - like Elton John and Rocketman.
With Elton, there's no story. Only good music, which he is trying to introduce to younger viewers, so that he can make more money. However, his life story isn't interesting at all.
Even less interesting as he got older, since all he cares about now is making more money.

Netflix just put out an interesting documentary about Robert Johnson, a black musician who more or less invented the blues in the 1930's and died young (he became part of the 27 Club). . His music heavily influenced Muddy Waters, BB King, The Stones, Eric Clapton, etc. He was a fledgling musician who played on the streets, disappeared for a year and returned playing music that bowled people over. They said he played Devil music or sold his soul to the devil.
Johnson was ahead of his time and unfortunately lived in a time that suppressed his artistry. The story would make a great movie with a young black male lead.

Please NO, not a non-actress, Taylor Swift, portraying Pattie Boyd. I'm sure there are tons of unknowns who can play Pattie. I cannot stand stunt casting and sure cannot stand TS. Besides TS looks nothing like Pattie.
Led Zeppelin, would be great. They were a truly mysterious band. They rarely gave interviews, when they did, they mostly talked about their music, not the groupie stories etc.
Oddly enough most of the Zep biographies out there are from the perspective of road managers, roadies and others who worked for them. Jimmy Page's biography was simply a photo book of him through the years. Not many knew Jimmy dated Jackie DeShannon, they lived together in the UK for awhile. Jackie said "Jimmy was very quiet, he liked to play chess."
Ezra Miller would make an interesting Page. He looks a lot like him and has great hair. British actor Tom Wisdom also looks like Page, but he's now too old to play Page as a young man.

I would love to see a biopic of Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton. Her original recording of Hound Dog predated the Elvie version by four years. She also wrote and recorded Ball and Chain in the early 1960s but her record company refused to release it...then in 1967 Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company released her version of it. Big Mama's record company kept the copyright to themselves so In a 1972 interview, Thornton acknowledged giving Joplin permission to record the song and receiving royalty payments from its sales. She applauded Janis' version of "Ball and Chain," saying, "That girl feels like I do." Eventually Big Mama and Janis Joplin became friends and performed together on a few shows.

Guns N' Roses
There was one supposedly optioned based on the book Reckless Road a few years ago (maybe James Franco - can't remember for sure). It was unofficial though and didn't have the blessing of Axl Rose etc.. Then the original 3 reunited for the world comeback tour and nothing has been heard about the movie since.
The book is worth reading though if you're a rock fan. It's authored by a childhood friend of Slash who memorialised a lot of their early rise to fame in photo's and videos. It's more pictures than straight biography but it feels authentic because the guy was actually there rather than a journo who just researched it years later.

Dorothy Love Coats, seminal gospel artist whose strong, gruff alto blazing delivery, and magnetic, theatrical stage presence influenced later artists such as Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, The Supremes (who repurposed her composition, "You Can't Hurry God," to "You Can't Hurry Love"), Little Richard, Mavis Staples (and The Staple Singers), Hendrix, the Rolling Stones, and countless others. James Brown even stole her classic "overcome with the Spirit, go down to the floor/leave the stage, and an attendant places a robe on her as she reprises her act" move.
In her retirement she worked with Dr. King in the civil rights movement; in her latter years she even appeared in several films such as [italic]Beloved[/italic] and [italic]The Long Walk Home.[/italic]
Black gospel artists/groups of that time were fucking fascinating in general--the long road trips through a segregated America; the constant poaching of artists by secular record labels; the illicit sex (straight and gay), the infighting and random drama, etc.
When I was young, our church's Children's Choir, Young Adult Choir, Senior Choir, Male Chorus, and Chancel Choir sang just about every one of Dorothy Love Coates's songs, and those of her group, the Gospel Harmonettes.
This is my favorite DLC song, and here you can see what I call her "refined rawness":

Madonna’s will be great but she needs to be dead or in her 80s+ before it’s attempted. She’ll control too much of the narrative and people won’t speak the truth before then.
Same with a Mariah movie. It’ll be a fluffy lifetime type shit fest if it’s done before she’s 70.

I think a movie about the Go-Gos could be compelling. After they hit it big it was all downhill in a drug fueled soap opera, but you could still have the hopeful decades later ending.
And then there's Whitney Houston. From the Queen of Pop to drug fueled mess - seemingly getting it together and appearing at an industry event that could have kicked off her redemption and then...not so much. Drowning in a drug fueled stupor in her hotel bathtub. I smell Janelle Monae's Oscar.

There’s supposedly a Bee Gees biopic in the early stages and a documentary much further along. It’s hard to imagine how a film could cover it all — from Manchester to Australia to Miami, with three (or four?) actors who are similar enough to believably be brothers but different enough to believably be Barry, Robin, and Maurice (and Andy?). There could be a great story from like 1966-1971, covering leaving Australia, their initial success, the break-up, followed by the reunion and ending with ‘How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?’ being a hit.

I'd like to see a move about the Jefferson Airplane. A story about the band amid the changing landscape of the 1960's- 70's--, the war in Vietnam, the hippie movement and San Francisco. The creativity and music explosion of that time would make an interesting backdrop. All the musicians of that era as cameos (David Crosby and Joni Mitchell were on the same show). The Airplane were the Fleetwood Mac of the hippie era.

Biopics about celebrities who are alive are usually god-awful, even worse than paint-by-numbers biopics about dead people.

R211, I think if it was well done, the ‘meat’ of the story would be them getting forced back together by circumstance but then — sort of — triumphing anyways. Their reunion happened as much because of financial interests (Stigwood making his company public) as because of emotional or artistic ones. On some level they drove each other crazy (particularly Robin and Barry), but they also seemed to have essentially no meaningful relationships with anyone else (besides their wives and children). There’s a quote from their mother in one biography about them, talking about how they never really had friends as children or teenagers, that “they were always sufficient in each other”. I just find that dynamic fascinating, I guess — the love and dependency and jealousy, the shifting loyalties (Maurice staying with Barry as a Bee Gee while his twin goes solo, Barry supposedly saying that he always felt the twins were conspiring against him, their father telling the press that Robin was having a mental breakdown when he left, etc)...
But I’m not a screenwriter, so who knows. It probably couldn’t really be written like that while Barry or the twins’ widows are alive.

There was a long line of actresses considered to play Connie Francis. Beverly D'Angelo spent some time with the role. Valerie Bertinelli and Michelle Pfeiffer were considered. Gloria Estefan was the one who expressed the most desire to play Connie and she and Connie spent years with the manuscript. Once Connie ended the idea, Dolly Parton expressed the desire to produce it. Gloria believed that she would be in contention for an Oscar. Yet, she had very little acting experience. Connie had previously stated, and then later, after the idea with Gloria ended, that she would like an unknown to play her.

R298 Jani seemed one of the few likeable decent guys in that glammy metal scene so he’d actually be an ideal tragic protagonist. It would be kickass to hear some of their less famous songs and albums get some play on a soundtrack, like DOG EAT DOG.
Add in the gay element for cred points plus plenty of cameos & Easter eggs from the still-kicking hair-band contingent like L.A. Guns, and you have yourself a hit.

Definitely Prince. The fact that he died in an elevator and sung about it on one of his songs-- Let's Get Crazy--is proof enough.

The new Scorsese movie about Dylan on Netflix is weirdly semi-fictionalized.

I'd say Bowie but wasn't that Velvet Goldmine? The public wouldn't go see it but the old jazz and blues musicians all had very interesting lives. I'd love to see a film version of Jelly Roll Morton or Buddy Bolden's lives.

[quote]The Janis Joplin movie has never gotten off the ground and I believe Amy Adams has been attached to it for a few years
I thought it was Michelle Williams attached to the movie.

That pisses me off. Americans can't be authentic about fucking anything.

EVERYBODY has been "attached" to a movie about Janis Joplin: Melissa Etheridge, Courtney Love, Pink, Nina Arianda, Reese Witherspoon, Zooey Deschanel, Renee Zellweger, Laura Theodore, Lili Taylor, Brittany Murphy, Amy Adams. There's been talk of a Janis Joplin movie for decades. It's never happened, probably because it's not meant to happen. NO ONE could really do Janis Joplin justice on the screen. She was a force of nature.

To have a movie made for release in movie theaters the artist would have to have had an iconic hit that still relevant to today's average movie goer, someone in their 20's-30's. Most of these people while they might make an interesting movie, the 20-30 crowd just wouldn't pay to see it.

I still can't believe that no one has managed to make a successful film out of the life of Hank Williams, Sr. everything is there for a great movie. And, Hank Williams isn't largely unknown, he is still a major historical figure in popular music.

There's a great YouTube fan-webseries about the Yacht Rock scene, titled simply 'Yacht Rock'. It's hilarious and surprisingly clever in a meta way.
I would love to get friends together and give the more obscure hair metal scene the same treatment, or maybe the British invasion of hardrock & metal.

Klaus Nomi. Gay, AIDS... the whole early-80's, NYC nightmare of ecstasy. And there was a lot of behind-the-scenes bitterness of people who felt he was ungrateful for their contribution to his success.

Sly Stone. Unbelievably brilliant, unjustly forgotten, brought down by his demons and cocaine, wrote great "woke" songs like Underdog and Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey. Did everything Prince did, but did it first, and did it better. Insane life -- rags to riches to rags. Outrageous style. And he's still alive. And maybe there could be a kind of happy ending for him for real.

None of the following were huge commercial artists but their lives would make interesting movies:
Sandy Denny
Nick Drake
Syd Barrett
Mia Zapata
Phil Ochs
Willie DeVille
