Wow. That movie still looks like it could have been made yesterday. (Actually the special effects are better than the CGI stuff of today.)
The little girl who played Newt in Aliens turns 43 today!

What happened to her character was horrible. Why waste all that time and energy being emotionally invested in her character and hoping she survives only to cut her open like a watermelon in the first scene of the sequel? Doesn’t respect the audience.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | May 8, 2019 9:12 AM |
Agreed, R2. Shits all over the audience. And that's just the first of #3's many problems.

Yes.

Read somewhere she became a school teacher. Decided not to pursue a career in acting.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 8, 2019 9:43 AM |
They should have just ended Aliens with her getting ripped to shreds by the Alien and dying a horrible death. A downer of an ending? But at least it would be shocking and it would be the same result of what happened to her anyway.

I don't acknowledge the existence of Alien 3 and 4. For me Ripley and Newt live happily ever after. Sig should have turned the third film down like Jodie Foster did with Hannibal.
Has Sig spoken much about 3?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 8, 2019 9:51 AM |
R4 which is ironic considering who directed this movie.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 8, 2019 10:23 AM |
'Ripley and Newt live happily forever'? What are you? 5 years old?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 8, 2019 10:29 AM |
R7 it's Sig's fault that #3 sucked. She had a producer credit and pushed for Ripley to be killed.
If you go back further than that, you can blame Aliens for setting up the circumstances for #3 (and all the shit that has come after).
In the original, the life cycle of the Alien didn't involve a Queen Alien sitting around laying eggs, and the addition of it had negative long term ramifications.

No and no. I recently rewatched the film and most effects certainly look like they are from the 80s.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 8, 2019 10:45 AM |
*sigh* what does a special effect from the 80s look like?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 8, 2019 10:49 AM |
The Alien movies are still some of my very favorite movies in both sci fi and horror. I think they hold up great, in terms of special effects, mood, and genre. It's hard to find any more recent movies as good. Recently, I bought all the DVDs so I could have them to watch and rewatch. I also like Predator, but not the new ones. The price of DVDs has gone down so much lately, since everyone is now getting into BluRay and streaming. I guess it's odd to buy DVDs now, but they are still great.

R13 i don't mind the sequel but Predator is just đź‘Ś

I had no idea she was one of those one-shot child stars who went on to have normal jobs and lives, ala the kid from "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (large animal vet) and the kid from "The Shining" (community college professor). For some reason, I thought she had more roles as a child.
She looks like your everyday, run-of-the-mill Frau now. Which I guess isn't necessarily a bad thing. Better that she grew up a regular person than a screwed-up former child star.

I wonder what Cameron was like with her? If he was a complete asshole to the adults, I can't imagine he'd have much patience for children.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 8, 2019 11:46 AM |
Was Cameron an asshole to the adults on Aliens?
Sigourney has always seemed close to him.
I know Kate Winslet and Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio had problems with him on Titanic and The Abyss.

there was a reunion of the cast somewhere online...She says her father traveled on his job so I think they lived in the UK for a bit which she says explains her slightly British sounding accent.

R20 there's a lot of stories about him being a jackass. This is the same guy who had his own screening for The Terminator and no one showed up lol.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 9, 2019 1:50 AM |
I agree R13. I would add that the films hold up well, because of good scripts (well, maybe not the third one). At the end of the day, not matter what genre or the amount of visual effects, it's the writing that matters the most.

"RIP-LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeyyyy!!!"
Love the "Aliens" film. Sig's Ripley characters was really the first female lead in the sci-fi film genre who was kick-ass and took no shit from the evil antagonists--as opposed to horror films up to then, where the lead or co-starring female actor usually was relegated to screaming, trying to run away, and then tripping and being overcome by the alien or monster or scooped up and kidnapped by it.

The original Alien must have been very surprising. Sigourney was a total unknown. Tom Skeritt was kind of a star and John Hurt had just been Oscar nominated. People must have expected them to be the last survivors.

I love this movie so much (my favorite one in the series) and Michael Biehn was hot as hell.

[quote]Was Cameron an asshole to the adults on Aliens?
Michael Biehn has worked with him several times and seems to like him.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 9, 2019 3:13 AM |
Did ya'll really want her hanging around for more films, she had to go somehow.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 9, 2019 3:21 AM |
If Susan Weaver had suffered that humiliating double Oscar loss in 1988 she probably wouldn't have had to come back for part 3.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 9, 2019 3:22 AM |
R27 I noticed. The actress who played Vasquez showed up in T2 and then there was obviously Bill.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 9, 2019 3:46 AM |
Oh yeah, you're right. She played the foster mom in T2.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 9, 2019 3:47 AM |
Vasquez is also in Titanic. (looks very different) She plays the Irish mother who can't get her kids on a boat and sings them to sleep as they drown.
She was also on some reality show. I think she owned a bra store. (odd for such a lesbian icon.)
by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 9, 2019 3:50 AM |
Really??? I never noticed that was her in Titanic. Learn something new every day.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 9, 2019 3:51 AM |
So her career has been asking James Cameron for parts?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 9, 2019 3:53 AM |
She had some other roles too r34. Not many though considering how iconic Vasquez was. She probably got typecast from it.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 9, 2019 3:58 AM |
Her bra store was for women with biggish boobs. She totally passed as Latina.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 9, 2019 4:01 AM |
I agree, r15/r17.
r9, this forum is about random bitchiness... not random cunting.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | May 9, 2019 4:04 AM |
. . . Actually the special effects are better than the CGI stuff of today.
I love all film before CGI for this very reason.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | May 9, 2019 4:07 AM |
The scene where Ripley and the rest of them and the female pilot is about to land the small ship and then the alien kills her before she can got her gun out of the holster.....well the crash is so thrillingly done.
