New Glass Roof For Notre Dame

I love it.

by Anonymousreply 1May 7, 2019 10:43 PM

Horrible

by Anonymousreply 2May 7, 2019 10:44 PM

No!!

by Anonymousreply 3May 7, 2019 10:47 PM

What about the stained glass windows? Too much light.

by Anonymousreply 4May 7, 2019 10:47 PM

Tacky and not appropriate.

by Anonymousreply 5May 7, 2019 10:49 PM

I imagine a large, invisible shoe above it, which the glass chewing gum stretches toward as God hisses 'Chalice de tabernacle!'

by Anonymousreply 6May 7, 2019 10:49 PM

They simply MUST extend the two towers with super tall skinny structures.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 7May 7, 2019 10:49 PM

There would be a solid roof under the glass. This design proposes a huge vegetable garden under the glass.

I think it's fabulous and the solar energy aspect is very appropriate.

by Anonymousreply 8May 7, 2019 10:50 PM

A beautiful marriage of ancient and futuristic.

by Anonymousreply 9May 7, 2019 10:50 PM

ooh-la-la!

by Anonymousreply 10May 7, 2019 10:51 PM

nothing new. meh.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 11May 7, 2019 10:52 PM

Kinda weird, but if they keep the chancel dark I can live with it.

by Anonymousreply 12May 7, 2019 10:53 PM

I think it's stellar. I hope they're brave enough to do something like that.

by Anonymousreply 13May 7, 2019 10:53 PM

by Anonymousreply 14May 7, 2019 10:53 PM

I vote yes.

by Anonymousreply 15May 7, 2019 10:56 PM

Can they paint it white too?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 16May 7, 2019 10:58 PM

The cathedral is completely vaulted in stone, none of the light from a glass roof would ever enter the interior of the church at all. The only thing that burned was the wooden roof covering the stone vault.

by Anonymousreply 17May 7, 2019 11:02 PM

Needs more gold and pizazz!

by Anonymousreply 18May 7, 2019 11:07 PM

It looks like an alligator! The Studio NAB design looks like it’s more harmonious with the classic look of the rest of the building.

by Anonymousreply 19May 7, 2019 11:10 PM

Add a roller coaster and slot machines.

by Anonymousreply 20May 7, 2019 11:13 PM

I like the idea but central spire is too tall and out of proportion with the towers. Pass.

by Anonymousreply 21May 7, 2019 11:13 PM

If it has an actual roof under it with gardens, and the glass can't be seen from inside the church, then fine. This is a Catholic Church, not some tacky Protestant mega-church for evangelical trash.

by Anonymousreply 22May 7, 2019 11:14 PM

I like shiny new things. YES!

by Anonymousreply 23May 7, 2019 11:14 PM

Sunlight is bad for artwork.

by Anonymousreply 24May 7, 2019 11:14 PM

by Anonymousreply 27May 7, 2019 11:17 PM

Je dis COOL - waterslides down to the Seine and a coaster. Bungee jump in centre.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 28May 7, 2019 11:18 PM

The idea is cool, but this particular design is out of scale—it should be smaller.

And for the posters who seem to think that the interior of the church would be open to the glass roof: SMH.

by Anonymousreply 29May 7, 2019 11:18 PM

Tacky. And it won't be around in another 865 years because future generations who had nothing to do with the tacky glass, will knock it down considering it to be an massive eyesore. Keep it as close to the original design as possible. If it was possible 865 years ago, it's possible in 2019. YUCK🤢🤦‍♂️

by Anonymousreply 30May 7, 2019 11:19 PM

This will happen. They already have that glass dealio in front of the Louvre. Frenchies like glass.

by Anonymousreply 31May 7, 2019 11:19 PM

Non!

by Anonymousreply 32May 7, 2019 11:22 PM

Peasants under glass.

by Anonymousreply 33May 7, 2019 11:24 PM

At least glass is flame retarded.

by Anonymousreply 34May 7, 2019 11:24 PM

Is flame retarded une bonne chose?

by Anonymousreply 35May 7, 2019 11:26 PM

It's groovy. Can they light up the roof like they light up the Empire State Building, where the roof is a different color each night? That could be really pretty.

by Anonymousreply 36May 7, 2019 11:27 PM

[quote]At least glass is flame retarded.

It's flame retardant.

by Anonymousreply 37May 7, 2019 11:27 PM

Good idea but too radical to be approved I think.

by Anonymousreply 38May 7, 2019 11:34 PM

Too much transparency for the Catholic Church.

by Anonymousreply 39May 8, 2019 2:43 PM

Looks like it should be in Thailand.

by Anonymousreply 40May 8, 2019 2:46 PM

^ Or Vegas

by Anonymousreply 41May 8, 2019 2:49 PM

Expected to hate it but instantly love it, it's such a reaffirming thing for Paris. Hope it happens.

by Anonymousreply 42May 8, 2019 2:51 PM

It's tacky and a little hideous. But this is the Catholic Church, after all.

by Anonymousreply 43May 8, 2019 3:07 PM

Pointless. It would only light up the attic. The vaulted ceilings in the main cathedral will not be removed.

by Anonymousreply 44May 8, 2019 3:10 PM

So that drones and anyone flying above can see me jerking off?

No thanks!

by Anonymousreply 45May 8, 2019 3:11 PM

I think the glassed-in area should include a casino and restaurants too. A few condos would command a hell of a price. It should be lit at night and change colors like Eiffel Tower.

by Anonymousreply 46May 8, 2019 3:39 PM

The spire looks like Charles de Gaulle's nose -- entirely out of proportion. Make it 5x smaller and it would be pretty nice.

by Anonymousreply 47May 8, 2019 4:09 PM

Who came up with that?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 48May 8, 2019 4:24 PM

The Chip And Joanna Gaines-ification of Europe.

by Anonymousreply 49May 8, 2019 5:42 PM

I think i like the idea - a celestial greenhouse for reflection....hopefully with some hidden areas to steal away a blowjob from an altar boy - after all, it is a Catholic church

by Anonymousreply 50May 8, 2019 6:45 PM

It's nice. Practicality before pretentiousness.

by Anonymousreply 51May 8, 2019 7:45 PM

It’s too large, and competes for attention with the bell towers. Also, looks too much like the Eiffel Tower.

by Anonymousreply 52May 8, 2019 8:14 PM

So we can see Macron clearly when he is crowned Emperor of Europe....

by Anonymousreply 53May 8, 2019 8:33 PM

So, they’ll tear down the ceiling? No.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 54May 8, 2019 8:50 PM

12 proposals for Notre-Dame.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 57May 8, 2019 9:10 PM

In the rendering, it looks like the real roof is under bubble wrap.

The claims about the amount of electricity it would produce sound very optimistic. Growing vegetables on the roof and selling them in a once-a-week market is a gimmick that a student might propose. It's a fun idea, though.

If they want a glass roof, make it pretty and strong and don't try to add value to the design with expensive, impractical, and risky retrofits.

by Anonymousreply 58May 8, 2019 9:13 PM

An glass slide on top of the cathedral would be a much better idea. Think of all the tourist money the cathedral could make!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 59May 8, 2019 9:40 PM

I like it. I think it's elegant. The spire needs to be back.

by Anonymousreply 60May 8, 2019 9:53 PM

They have to be so careful - that building is DAMAGED. In the sense that extremely high temperatures can cause stone to change in strange, unpredictable ways (for instance, sandstone can become crumbly) Then being doused with cold water?

They should be looking to lighten the load, not add tons and tons of glass and biomass (I'm sure that it will sit over the structure rather than on it, but it might be too soon to come up with plans like this until it is known for certain the full extent of the damage.

I had a friend, a master-mason, who worked on the restoration of York Minster after the 1984 fire, and he said that some of the original stone they worked with literally disintegrated. And that was a straight restoration, nothing "fancy"

And, as predicted, the spire is too big...

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 61May 8, 2019 9:54 PM

Tacky.

by Anonymousreply 62May 8, 2019 9:58 PM

I know they love their glass pyramid in front of the Louvre. Is this glass roof going to be lite at night? I don't know. I just don't know. It will look like a beacon. Like the Eiffel Tower. But I don't think a glass roof goes with a Cathedral that goes back 800 years.

by Anonymousreply 63May 8, 2019 9:59 PM

The idea is indeed interesting, but the design is horrible. It reads like a Waterford vase bought on sale at Macy's, turned upside down.

by Anonymousreply 64May 8, 2019 9:59 PM

[quote]No they’re keeping the ceiling. They propose putting tons of soil, plants and water above it. What could go wrong?

Never live directly below a penthouse apartment with a garden terrace.

by Anonymousreply 65May 8, 2019 10:02 PM

I love the garden roof idea. As we grapple with global warming, making the roof sustainable is a fantastic symbol of a livable world.

I don't know anything about style architecture, though.

by Anonymousreply 66May 8, 2019 10:02 PM

It reflects what is relevant today, and the idea of something eco-friendly, using solar, and growing a garden is a good idea. Over 800+ years, changes have been made that reflected the design and importance of that time. I think it's a good compromise of the tradition of the spire, and making it more modern, and less wasteful.

by Anonymousreply 67May 8, 2019 10:05 PM

R64, Macy's has Waterford? That tacky-ass store?

by Anonymousreply 68May 8, 2019 11:06 PM

It's tacky-ass Waterford. They don't make it in Ireland anymore - Poland, I think.

by Anonymousreply 69May 8, 2019 11:16 PM

They should use transparent aluminum.

by Anonymousreply 70May 8, 2019 11:17 PM

Almost all those famous architects at R57 want to put a greenhouse up there? Why? It's laughable. Why don't they restore the structural integrity of the building and put a nice facsimile of an old roof back, but flame retardant. All the greenhouse interiors look like cramped narrow office building or mall atriums. Silly! If they want to put a subtly designed walk at the rim of the roof, that would be interesting. It could be outside, or camouflaged as part of the roof line. It would be interesting to see the buttresses from that angle, and so close. There is no need to put plants and gardens on the roof of a historic cathedral. Tourist should be looking at the city and the Cathedral itself.

by Anonymousreply 71May 8, 2019 11:28 PM

Horrible! Recreate the old roof.

by Anonymousreply 72May 8, 2019 11:36 PM

Thank you R71.

by Anonymousreply 73May 8, 2019 11:38 PM

R42

You don't think Quasi might like tending his courgettes, aubergines et tomates?

He's too Elder dignified now to be jerking off for drones.

I do rather pity his lovely peaceful privacy tending the bees hitherto now being disturbed by selfie stick hordes on the roofline however.

by Anonymousreply 74May 9, 2019 12:08 AM

UNESCO renovators have been doing wonders with flash paper in recent years.

by Anonymousreply 75May 9, 2019 12:17 AM

Who puts a garden in the roof of a cathedral? Dumb.

by Anonymousreply 76May 9, 2019 12:25 AM

But...... UNITY! Our multicultural bio garden will produce pennyroyal (fliou) and cardoon (kourchef), with day tripping écoliers from Sarcelles!

by Anonymousreply 77May 9, 2019 12:33 AM

Some people are missing the point.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 78May 9, 2019 1:16 AM

Yes it would be SO extraordinary to make an exception for an ancient historic building.

by Anonymousreply 79May 9, 2019 1:18 AM

Don't landmarked buildings need to be restored to as close as possible to as before the incident? It's disgusting to make such a major change to it. It's hideous.

by Anonymousreply 80May 9, 2019 1:29 AM

It's a historical landmark. It doesn't need to reflect what is relevant today. The only people who give a shit about that are the ones who go there and are too busy snapping selfies to actually observe the interiors. Not everything needs to be targeted to the Instagram crowd.

Add to that most modern design being absolute shit, and it only makes sense to keep as close to the original design as possible. You want a place like that to feel steeped in history. Not to have it a resemble a ultra wealthy hospital arboretum.

by Anonymousreply 81May 9, 2019 1:39 AM

Can the aisles be widened too? It's hard to fit those double wide strollers inside. Too crampy!

And while we're at it, have something for the kids to do. Little Madison and Haylee tend to get bored after a few minutes. Maybe cutsey little GGI animated reproductions can be displayed in a small area, with a nice games area as well!

by Anonymousreply 82May 9, 2019 1:42 AM

On the day of the fire, I predicted, on here, architects would propose replacing the burned areas with glass. I think it is perfectly acceptable, except the spire is too tall.

by Anonymousreply 83May 9, 2019 1:45 AM

I thought they had already decided it would be rebuilt exactly as it was, but with a fuchsia exclamation point in place of the spire.

by Anonymousreply 84May 9, 2019 1:51 AM

Just trash the whole thing and knock it down and start over. What drugs are these people doing? Terrible idea.

by Anonymousreply 85May 9, 2019 1:54 AM

“21 tonnes of fruits and vegetables” First, why would you add all that unnecessary weight to the top of a hundreds year old fire damaged structure and second that’s really the way Brits spell tons???

by Anonymousreply 86May 9, 2019 2:17 AM

This reminds me of student work in architecture school. Imaginative but unrealistic.

by Anonymousreply 87May 9, 2019 2:19 AM

We want it to be rebuild identically. Only 25 % (Macron and Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, included) would like a change in the architecture. As for Hidalgo, she wants it to be restored for the Olympic Games in 2024 which is dumb and art assassination.

by Anonymousreply 88May 9, 2019 7:54 AM

That was my first thought too, R11/14.

by Anonymousreply 89May 9, 2019 1:49 PM

With the glass top, it looks like a jewelry box.

by Anonymousreply 90May 9, 2019 2:08 PM

Are there nude photos of homosexual Macron?

by Anonymousreply 91May 9, 2019 2:54 PM

R91 I could see him being bisexual, because it appears that he and his bodyguard were extremely close, but I doubt he is homosexual. While it isn't uncommon for a homosexual male to have a beard, even today, it just seems strange that he would seduce his teacher in high school to become his long running beard.

by Anonymousreply 92May 9, 2019 10:31 PM

And how would the roof and spire be lighted at night? The

all those greenhouse designs - what deplorable taste - quelle honte pour la France

by Anonymousreply 97May 10, 2019 1:52 AM

R86 - no, "Brits" spell it as "ton" except when referring to the lighter "metric tonne", which is suitable here as it is a French standard.

by Anonymousreply 98May 17, 2019 12:19 PM

I say yes. Without bold transforative leadership and diirectrf change, we will become extinct, this would be a symbol of that dynamic change.

(No one, I mean no one has a plan. It's fucking scary)

by Anonymousreply 99May 17, 2019 1:03 PM

I haven't decided yet whether I like it or not. But I'm sure I could get used to it. Usually I love modern architecture.

by Anonymousreply 100May 17, 2019 7:45 PM

I love it. Modern and concerned about the earth.

by Anonymousreply 101May 17, 2019 8:08 PM
