I thought UCLA was so much harder to get into. Does UCLA have a rowing team?
USC and UCLA have almost the same acceptance rate
by Anonymous | reply 73 | May 11, 2019 8:34 AM |
WOW I thought rowers were supposed to be hot, guess I was wrong.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | May 7, 2019 5:20 AM |
USC’s acceptance rate is lower than UCLA. No one think that USC is academically superior; UCLA appears in most lists of top 20 global universities, and USC appears in none. But when it comes to amenities and glamor, USC gets the advantage and is a great party school. It is also superior in media/film studies and attracts students from around the world to those programs.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 7, 2019 5:22 AM |
It's hard to get into USC. It has a much better reputation out of state than in state.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 7, 2019 5:30 AM |
O. M. G. R2 major camel toe and moose knuckle in that pic! MAJOR. It's all just there in your face. Sooo tacky.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 7, 2019 5:32 AM |
What is a 'party school' ?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 7, 2019 5:34 AM |
Ask Olivia Jade, R6
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 7, 2019 5:39 AM |
a school where people party a lot r6
UCLA seems like a party school too. Those frats in Westwood seem pretty rowdy.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 7, 2019 5:43 AM |
R8 you've never been in Westwood then. Stop imagining stuff, Idahoan geezer.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 7, 2019 5:48 AM |
Not for 20 years r9 so it may have changed. I used to walk past them when I lived there and they were quite intimidating. (and why so hostile? r8)
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 7, 2019 5:52 AM |
Are you thinking of the Warwick Rowers, camel-toe aunties?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 7, 2019 6:03 AM |
You also have to pay attention to size (how many students) of the school. E.g., Yale is a relatively small college.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 7, 2019 6:10 AM |
UCLA is far more prestigious. Not even close.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | May 7, 2019 6:11 AM |
UCLA is a real school. USC is where Olivia Jade went for a few weeks or however long she was there. Olivia is a fairly typical USC student.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 7, 2019 6:14 AM |
U C Lots of Asians
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 7, 2019 6:29 AM |
USC is in such a shitty area though... Horrible. UCLA is just south of Bel Air, west of Beverly Hills, and east of Brentwood. Bel Air literally starts across Sunset at the north end of the campus.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 7, 2019 6:37 AM |
USC is ranked #22 of colleges, hardly mediocre.
Who gives a fuck about the area?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 7, 2019 6:46 AM |
UCLA is too big. You have to take buses to get to classes. I wouldn't like that.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 7, 2019 6:57 AM |
R17 You give a fuck when several students have been shot dead just outside campus for no good reason by local gang members. One particular noteworthy case was the international student from China, who was shot while sitting in his car right off campus. He was his parents’ only child.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 7, 2019 7:01 AM |
R19, bad things happen at every college. This is coming from someone who attended USC for 6 years. There was a lunatic who drove his car down the sidewalk in Westwood ages ago. I forget how many were killed. Don't talk out your ass.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 7, 2019 7:07 AM |
Who gives a fuck about the area? Really, r17? Did you go to college? It's all about the area.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 7, 2019 7:07 AM |
USC should relocate. Somewhere even nicer than UCLA's area.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 7, 2019 7:08 AM |
Westwood is a leafy, sophisticated and vibrant neighborhood. Those Mississippi/Missouri rednecks, who never live outside their godforsaken states, wouldn't understand its charm.
And Westwood isn't West Hollywood, if you people really don't know.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 7, 2019 7:34 AM |
What is Westwood Village like now? I can remember in the eighties it was the place where all the older kids went to hang out. It seemed very glamorous to me as a little kid. Then there was a riot and people were afraid to go there and the business all moved out. I haven't been there in a long time.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 7, 2019 7:34 AM |
It was the 1984 car incident that changed things. 1 death and 50+ injured. Westwood never really got it's mojo back after that. Sophisticated, you must be joking.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 7, 2019 7:39 AM |
wow r25 didn't know about that. And it was right before the Olympics too. That must have had tons of publicity.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 7, 2019 7:43 AM |
It's got some great Persian restaurants, but not really a dining or shopping destination anymore. Basically for UCLA students or if you live in the neighborhood.
I was a kid when that happened, and my parents quit taking us there. It was a ghost town for months after, if not years.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 7, 2019 7:49 AM |
Way back in 1983, in high school in L.A., I applied to two schools; USC and UCLA. I got into both, but chose UCLA. It was an awesome experience and I'm happy to be a Bruin. Many Trojans (and I have several among my friends) seem kinda mental to me about USC. Not proud, but rather obsessed. In the 80s, the area around USC was really bad, and one thing I can tell you about Trojans of that era (and it very well may be different now), if UCLA was in an area like that, they would have NEVER stopped making fun and bad-mouthing it, I'm 100% sure of that. THat's kinda how many of them were. Fun fact: I had a USC roomate for a while who was a total stoner, but he just sailed on through since he parents gave a lot of money to the school.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 7, 2019 7:50 AM |
1984? Oh dear auntie, I wasn't even born yet!!!
You certainly have a Ph.D on being stuck in the past unwaveringly. The neighborhood has been revamped and rejuvenated thereafter, auntie.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 7, 2019 7:50 AM |
Let me guess r29, you went to UCLA. Is that why you are so defensive? It's ok. Don't be ashamed that you couldn't afford a private school.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 7, 2019 7:54 AM |
UCLA is in a great area if you own a home there, but it's shit for everything else.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 7, 2019 9:06 AM |
R20 You just proved my point. You have one example of a lunatic 35 years ago for UCLA. The area around USC is a ghetto save for the handful of museums. Students at USC can’t walk around off campus like they can at UCLA. I don’t know why you’re denying the fact that the area is dangerous.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 7, 2019 9:20 AM |
I worked at UCLA until about four years ago and would go in to the village shop or eat. It’s not great. There are a lot of empty storefronts and the aforementioned Persian restaurants and hookah lounges, AAAAAAHS!, and an urban outfitters. Whoever said that it’s great for real estate and crappy for everything else was right.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 7, 2019 9:51 AM |
i know two people who went to these schools and they were ordinary as hell, waste of money imo.i would not spend any money on an average child.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 7, 2019 10:33 AM |
R32, it is a shitty area. As I said previously- bad things can happen anyplace. I chose my college based on my intended major- film. Not because it's in a fancy area.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 7, 2019 3:43 PM |
Hahaha! I "earned" a BA by correspondence school at UCLA. Then they asked me to give the commencement address at MY OWN graduation. Suck it, losers.

by Anonymous | reply 42 | May 8, 2019 4:27 AM |
UCLA is a public school and USC is private OP.
UCLA is far more respected by anyone who knows academia. USC has worked very hard to increase their rankings by gaming the system (pretty disgustingly so), but their academics reputation isn't there yet compared to their peers.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | May 8, 2019 4:45 AM |
R43, not true. It depends on your major.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | May 8, 2019 5:25 AM |
In general, it's true r44.
Not saying USC is bad, but UCLA's rep is better.
I went to neither, I have no skin in the game. But I have spent a lot of time working at universities.

by Anonymous | reply 46 | May 9, 2019 12:17 AM |
UCLA's acceptance rate is much higher if you're an in state vs. out of state. USC is probably easier for an OOS applicant to get into. And yes, UCLA is a much better school than USC overall. Acceptance rates don't always indicate quality- for example a lot of highly ranked all women's schools like Smith have deceptively high acceptance rates because they draw fewer applicants. But the applicants they do get are ridiculously well qualified. USC is more likely to get applications from a number of genuine turds.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 9, 2019 12:50 AM |
USC fancies itself as the Stanford of Southern California, but it's more like the University of San Francisco of SoCal. UCLA, however, is definitely the UC Berkeley of SoCal.

by Anonymous | reply 50 | May 9, 2019 2:23 AM |
R50 That's just the odds, since Asians and Hispanics account for >50% of students at UCLA. Whites are just a quarter of students.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | May 9, 2019 2:27 AM |
So what are the best schools to find hot white guys. (now we are getting to useful info craved by many)

by Anonymous | reply 54 | May 9, 2019 2:36 AM |
Lots of hot surfer dudes from rich families at USC, horny AF all the time.

by Anonymous | reply 58 | May 10, 2019 4:17 AM |
Generation Z is about half white/half non-white r52, so your image is becoming more out of touch with the reality of college campuses. Especially elite colleges which inevitably have huge Asian populations.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | May 10, 2019 4:21 AM |
[quote]which inevitably have huge Asian populations.

by Anonymous | reply 60 | May 10, 2019 4:28 AM |
It depends on the major. I don’t think UCLA has a undergraduate business school, therefore that goes to USC . Also USC for film. UCLA for everything else.
Westwood is a much better area, obviously, but expensive to live for a public school area. It’s now a ghost of how it was in the 80’s. I grew up in Westwood and spent many days in the arcade, Rhino, Tower and Pennylane Records, used bookseller row, all gone. Mostly since the Iran Revolution Westwood is a huge Persian town now. Mostly as mentioned above, empty storefronts. There was one gang shooting in the late 80’s where an innocent bystander young lady got killed. That was the beginning of the downfall. Westwood used to be known for huge movie premieres, but most of its former theaters are long closed, the FOX & the BRUIN being the exception.

This triggers me!! I went to school with a bunch of Iranian kids. They were quite unpredictable and cruel. I don't think I'd like UCLA!
by Anonymous | reply 62 | May 10, 2019 8:05 AM |
R52 it was very snobby growing up there in the 80’s and 90’s. Most of the Persian kids I knew from high school ended up at SMC where it was rumored that they would pay they professors to up their grades so they could enventuslly transfer to UCLA.
UCLA is a fair mix of nationalities, a lot of Asians. But Westwood as a city is mostly Persian and White. Most of the culture of Westwood is mixed/ integrated Tehrangeles and a 3rd rate college town. It makes Davis or Santa Barbara look Vegas.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | May 10, 2019 8:51 AM |
As we recall USC has a heavy percentage of hot stuff. UCLA has a heavy percentage of Ornamentals (so NOT hot).
by Anonymous | reply 64 | May 10, 2019 9:05 AM |
Yikes. That is what one of the Persian kids I knew did. UC Davis and then transferred to UCLA after two years. He was very shady and his whole family would take advantage of people.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | May 10, 2019 9:12 AM |
I never get why the Persians are so snobby. What in the culture encourages that?
by Anonymous | reply 66 | May 11, 2019 4:13 AM |
R66 the older generation pre-Revolution is hard working and they aren’t too snobby, just hard-working, deep into family and their culture but the generation here after 1979 were born with money, having their parents come here with it from Iran, that’s why a lot of them I went to school with were big time snobs.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | May 11, 2019 5:50 AM |

I’ve heard this as well—that gang shooting of a young female bystander triggered Westwood’s decline. I found an article on it once.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | May 11, 2019 6:12 AM |
After the film New Jack City premiered there were riots in Westwood. That really put a damper on things.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | May 11, 2019 6:27 AM |
I went to USC’s film school as a grad student from 86 - 89. Back then there were certain programs like film that were quite good and very hard to get into but overall the University was a mediocre rich kids school - the main library closed before midnight. There were lots of undergrad business majors and they didn’t have classes on Friday so the hard partying started on Thursday afternoons. The average student was rich, pretty and not very intelligent or curious - bro / basic central - but they weren’t called that back then.
UCLA was clearly the superior school - by a wide margin, but it was public so the intense rivalry at the University of Spoiled Children seized on that inconsequential fact like a pit bull. The off campus bookstore sold a poster that had a guy in a Porsche with USC plates next to a guy in a VW with UCLA plates and the slogan “You get what you pay for.”
Right as I was graduating the University implemented a 20 year plan to increase academic standing - but it is still not UCLA’s equal. I was rather shocked by the scandal - you have to bribe your way into US fucking C - really?
The neighborhood around the school was certainly poor - but it varied a great deal. There are major freeways right to the east - and less than a mile to the north of campus with Exposition park is directly to the south -so the campus had a buffer on three sides. The neighborhood got worse south of expo park and in the area immediately west of campus - so most off campus student apartments / frats and some dorms were in the zone north of campus but below the freeway. Even in the 80s this neighborhood was pretty safe - lots of students and poor Hispanic families - not really a ghetto. Most students lived far off campus and commuted. The campus has expanded a great deal to the east and north - tons more apartments and stores / restaurants - it seems incredibly safe, if even more of a bubble than it was back then.
Westwood Village was a very popular night spot at the time - tons of stores / restaurants / bars and movie theaters - with hundreds of USC & UCLA students filling the streets every weekend. USC ran a shuttle bus between the village and campus. The shooting and the openings of the new mall / movie multiplex in Century City and the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica turned it into a ghost town almost overnight - it was shocking how quickly it died and it never really came back.

Did you like the film school r70?
I've heard it was very cut throat back then. Did you like your fellow students?
by Anonymous | reply 71 | May 11, 2019 7:55 AM |
I loved the program - and feel like I got a great education in Hollywood narrative style filmmaking. The school was not really geared to more experimental type work, and documentary film was just beginning to get somewhat equal attention. There were not many women in the program back then.
The program was very competitive - upper level projects (20 min films) were funded by the school - but only 20 or so were done every semester - so getting your script chosen by the faculty and / or getting to direct one of these projects was ever student wanted.
The students were a mix - like anyplace. There were some cutthroat a-holes, some egomaniacs, and lots of really bright talented people - you really had lots of opportunity to be creative. In hindsight I probably didn’t take as much advantage of the place & the people around me as I could have, but most of us feel that way when looking back on life.
