Just what California needs. More trashy ship-ins.

What exactly will they live on in California? Property taxes and basic expenses in the decent parts are pretty high. What about protection?

Does this mean the British taxpayer won't be paying for them?

They should set up shop in one of the Chateau Marmont cottages. They can bum meals at the restaurant there and hold court at the bar below.

Diana toured Malibu houses at one point.
It's a dream.

[quote]Weren't there stories that Harry used to run up huge bar bills and then stiff the bar? Don't think that will fly in LA.
All the british royals are notoriously cheap. I've read numerous accounts where they either stiff establishments because, like internet celebrities, they believe that they create such great publicity by being there that it more than makes up for whatever bill they don't pay.
Also, they regularly look to their famous friends to pick-up the check. Edward VIII was notorious for expecting other people to pay for him. Apparently, Charles is also.

R7 thank you. I was worried they wouldn't be coming here.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 5, 2019 6:08 PM |
R14 Why do you say Harry is a homosexual? I've never heard such a thing elsewhere. Harry and Meghan are going to run out of money: I understand he had capital of ÂŁ40m when he met her; she then had about ÂŁ7m. In a good year, ÂŁ47m might have generated an income of, say, ÂŁ2m before tax; they might have been left with ÂŁ1.5m per year after tax which is not a lot when they spent ÂŁ750,000 for the wedding dress alone. They seem to have been living on their capital. I suppose it's a case of Bank of Daddy and Granny, but Granny is notoriously frugal so good luck with that.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 5, 2019 7:18 PM |

You can look in the archives!
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 5, 2019 8:33 PM |
The Americans won't be as interested in them once they actually live there. It's the connection to all the goings on in England with the other royals that they enjoy.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | May 5, 2019 8:36 PM |
Right. Once they live in the USA they'll just be "Eurotrash".
by Anonymous | reply 38 | May 5, 2019 8:39 PM |
I don’t understand why so many say disconnecting financially from the royal family would be horrible for them and they better get in line and respect who controls the purse strings..
They can make a fortune if they relocate to LA. They got everything they needed branding wise with the televised wedding. A christening will be the icing on the cake but isn’t necessary. They don’t need the monarchy anymore as far as setting up life of A list celebrity and privilege in the US.
The amount of money they could make would put Kylie Jenner to shame. Selling their name to a dinnerware line, a clothing line, promoting some Hello Fresh type thing or hooking up with Huggies once the baby is born.
For what appears to be their endgame goal, ditching the monarchy and heading west makes total sense. No US consumer is going to care that technically Meghan isn’t officially royalty anymore. The amount of money they can make, on their own terms - without smiling and cutting ribbons, is more than enough.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | May 5, 2019 8:43 PM |
R40 Meghan would continue to be officially royal, an HRH if you please, in CA. Her official royal status does not depend on where she hangs out.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | May 5, 2019 8:48 PM |
Megs probably started plotting her escape from England when they made her sing Christmas carols at a nursing home. That clearly wasn't what she envisioned when she married a prince. That and then being banished to Frogmore Shack put her over the edge.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | May 5, 2019 8:51 PM |
She must HATE it there. LOL.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | May 5, 2019 8:52 PM |
He can vacation there once or twice a year but as long as he's a member of the royal family, he will stay in England.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | May 5, 2019 8:57 PM |
R42 If Megs wanted chic she should have gone Continental. Someone like racing-driver billionaire Albert, 12th Prince of Thurn and Taxis (you see he owns taxis as well as F1!). Yikes, he appears not to be married: will Megs be trading up one German family for another?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 5, 2019 9:02 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 51 | May 5, 2019 10:06 PM |
Fergie had already been cast out of the royal family and stripped of her HRH status.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | May 5, 2019 10:07 PM |
Now is a great time! I envision a line of qvc Duchess sheet sets and eau de twoilette; cartoon voiceovers; and Living Elegantly on a Few Pounds PBS series. DO IT DO IT
by Anonymous | reply 55 | May 5, 2019 10:11 PM |
Fergie didn’t come up in the age of social media where no one disappears. Reality stars, sitcom stars who would fade away when their shows ended - none of them leave anymore as long as they stay on social media and “talk” with their fans. Fergie in today’s world would have been able to get a lot more traction and ride her fame much further. Not to mention, Fergie wasn’t a biracial American feminist ticking all the right feel good boxes of today.
25 years ago people like Jessica Simpson, Jessica Alba, Backstreet Boys, Melissa Joan Hart, etc. would only have press if they were arrested scandalously or died. It’d be, “Oh, I remember her, that one show... what was it? So sad to hear she’s gone.” That’s how it used to be. You had a short window to make it really big or you were a faint memory. It’s not like that now. You can turn a Dr. Phil appearance into a multi-year career.
Meghan and Harry will have great success if they choose to cut the official ties that bind and do their own thing. It’s complete denial to think they’ll be groveling and begging to be back smiling and waving at nursing homes. They do not need the BRF to be relevant. They needed the wedding. From here on out, their own brand is enough.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | May 5, 2019 10:19 PM |
R56 - Are you serious? Meghan wouldn't have much of a "brand" if it wasn't for the Royal Family.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | May 5, 2019 10:21 PM |
R56 She was singing, I say singing, at the nursing home!
by Anonymous | reply 58 | May 5, 2019 10:27 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 59 | May 5, 2019 10:52 PM |
This seems to be a steal at $19m (see link). Couldn't they manage that? Not fashionable enough R59?
by Anonymous | reply 60 | May 5, 2019 10:59 PM |
Now you're talking palaces! Sparkles will love it.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | May 5, 2019 11:04 PM |
Yes r57, I am serious. She got what she needed as far as US fame goes. Her fandom will not care if she and Harry aren’t officially royal anymore. They’ll still consider them royal and think the rules are “dumb,” as they won’t look at it from the British taxpayer perspective, they’ll look at it as Meghan and Harry just being too modern and too full of world changing ideas to be restricted by the monarchy.
Anna Nicole has been dead how many years and her daughter’s Kentucky Derby visit still makes the news every year. Meghan and Harry will be running around with Oprah, etc. It may not be the regal, mystique fame of royalty but it will be the Chrissy Tiegen, Kardashian, Goop type fame and that’s good enough for them. That’s all either of them really want. It’s all of the good - money, clothes, parties, exotic vacations, Met ball, people thinking everything you say is so insightful and significant — but none of the mundane monotony of actually being a working royal.
Real life royalty is great if you dream of being a lady who lunches, shops, and smiles. If you dream of red carpets, interview spreads in Vogue, etc. - being a working royal is golden handcuffs.

She's from L.A. and she wants her Mom to look after the baby.
The Mom doesn't want to live at Frogmore.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | May 6, 2019 1:55 AM |
I think Harry would love LA. I grew up there. The hills of Los Feliz might be perfect for them. A beautiful 1920's Spanish colonial. They have to be very careful with their dog(s) as coyotes wander around at night looking for pets to eat. They could make Little Dom's their regular haunt ( I love the rice balls there).
And Los Feliz is close to Silver Lake, which has a fun, hip vibe - great area to raise a cool kid. There is a huge dog park there, where Meghan could bring her kid and dog and hang out with other low key celebrities.
Look - Vince Vaughn's Spanish revival was just put on the market.

So much less royal politics and pressure in America. Of course they'll have to deal with celeb and paparazzi culture here too.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | May 6, 2019 2:15 AM |
Security is the main issue. All the terrorists in the world would love to abduct and torture them to death slowly on social media. Vince Vaughn's Spanish revival is too BoHo for two (possibly three) HRHs but it's a third of the price of the Laughton place, if they're really broke that is.

There was a blind several weeks ago anout Harkles' agent property shopping around LA. I'd think most of the *stars are concerned about security.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | May 6, 2019 3:08 AM |
Most of the stars are not closely related to the head of state of the UK, an evil empire in its death throes which has to be put down according to some desperate for revenge and closure. The Harkles' peril is historical and political as well as being related to mere celebrity.

Watch out any neighborhood chosen by the Harkles: you can look forward to police and helicopters, road blocks, ID checks. Ask the residents of Palm Beach when the Clown is in Mary Largo ... it's much worse for them than it needed to have been because they looked down on him as a former casino operator from Jersey and then he became the vengeful orange prez - he spares them not in his disruption. Harkles are not as crass as him (who is?) but what Meghan wants Meghan gets so were she to show self-restraint the neighborhood will still become unrecognizable, thanks.
