African American looks differ markedly to native African it seems. Is that a fair observation? Intermixing since slavery?
Also - as a related aside? - I love watching Olympic athlete's parades. The North Americans - Canadian and USA collective teams have a definite 'look' of physical vigour and marked affluence somehow that differs from other nations. PLUS unlike other huge team nations (see China) it's nice to see the racial diversity is very obvious compared with many other countries.
I live in Brisbane - accent aside that immediately draws attention to country of origin among tourists - American/Canadians see to have a 'look': men - at least the ones who travel here - always have great teeth and are tall, haircut is most often shaved/Jarhead/crew military style more so than the hipster beard and hair waxed moustache thing. Your women backpacker type or older ones travelling here seems are heavy into cosmetic make-up faces /hair dos even during the every day is my anecdotal take.

“All American” to me was always a genre that basically embodied the 1940s and 50s. There may be an American fashion sensibility but featureswise, nope. We are far too variable. The Northeast, the South, the Midwest, the Pacific coast, the Mexican border all have a lot of regional variation with no homogenization. Maybe if we survive a century or two we will intermix enough to create a whole new national ethnic group made up of European, African, Asian and indigenous American types. That would be kind of cool.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | April 28, 2019 12:18 AM |
Everyone complaining about Euro looking influence, what do you expect? Like 80+% of Americans have at least one European ancestor line. President Obama's Mother was of Irish ethnic heritage.
It's so weird for people to say we should just ignore this. Acknowledging something isn't making a value judgement, it's just acknowledging something. Stating the simple fact that 2/3 of Americans have some German heritage is not making a value judgement about that fact. So many people don't know how to think, anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | April 28, 2019 12:22 AM |
Don't get yourself in a huff, of course, people are a mixture.
But the faces could be mistaken for someone in Europe if we didn't know who they were. American-looking is a silly and stupid meme, there is no "American-looking", only the stereotypical images that is only associated to USA, like the American cowboy, the California surfer girl, the American Indian.

R159 European faces look, frankly, more sophisticated. It's hard to explain but there's a cool precision about the features. I don't know if it's a whole bunch of old world looks mixed together but I think non-Americans know what I mean.

Question for the Dataloungers who live outside of the United States:
Is there a distinctive appearance between American Blacks, and Blacks who (might) live in your countries? For example, I know England and France have substantial Black populations. Can you tell the difference between them and Blacks who are from the United States?

by Anonymous | reply 175 | April 28, 2019 12:46 AM |
R173 Most black Americans (certainly not all, and it varies by region) are descended from West African ancestors and so many look typically Weat African with some European influences. Because of that whole slave rape history thing. People from different regions of Africa immigrate to different regions of the world. Lots of Algerians, for example, in France, and Algerian people look different than Nigerian and Ghanian people.
But “black American” varies. Many of my black friends have the standard slavery history and are mostly West and Central African, but here in DC we also have significant Ethiopian and Eritrean populations and they are quite distinct looking from black Americans who are descended from West Africans. And some black Americans look just like Nigerian immigrants, but others including their own family members may have lighter skin and generally more European influence expressed in their appearances.
Here’s a picture of Eritrean girls. Do they look like all black people in the U.S. to you? (I hope not!)

DiCaprio doesn't look like the stereotypical American to me at all with his high cheekbones, pointy chin and hooded eyes. He takes after his mother who was born in Germany, but is at least half Russian. Some years back there were rumours that he wanted to star in a Lenin biopic, and lookswise he could definetely pull that off.
Harrison Ford, Warren Beatty or Chris Pratt have what I'd consider the stereotypical white American look. And Kris Humphries (half black from one side of his family) looks very American to me in that ambigue 'is he or is he not mixed?' kind of way.
And yes, when it comes to women, Americans seem to have a thing for bland blonde surfer girl types. As a European I don't get the appeal of the likes of Christie Brinkley, Farah Fawcett, Jennifer Aniston or Blake Lively AT ALL. Not that blonde women can't be stunningly beautiful, but the aforementioned are just absolutely beige imo.
Oh, and Lori Loughlin looks very American to me!

There are definitely a lot of brunettes that are all American looking, most just haven’t been mentioned here. Sally field, Mary Tyler Moore, Valerie Bertinelli. IT usually means pretty but in an accessible way.
Even though Faye Dunaway is from someone trashy part of Fla, she had that less accessible, chiseled cheekboned, European kind of beauty.
THeres definitely a difference.

Kevin Costner has the look. He got ridiculed when he played Robin Hood. He looked like an American and talked like an American.

It used to be the "Far Out" guy from "Foul Play."
Now it's more like Logan Miller from "Love, Simon"

Jennifer Jason Leigh. She has that common American look, ash blonde or brunette, usually the hazel version of Brown, Blue, Gray or Green eyes, could be from a very old English Protestant family, could be Dutch, could be Evangelical Christian or could be Jewish with a Shiksa Mother. You can't really tell by looking at her.
The American "look" is really about that pan-European, pan-racial ethnic ambiguity but with a typical, "mutt" cuteness and more approachable features. That's why any American who holds racial or ethnic supremacist views of any kind is confirmation you're dealing with a Class A clown. Unlike populations in many regions of the World, most Americans have more than four different ethnic heritages and possibly have unknown racial ancestry, like Black or Native American (including Mestizo).
I think more Americans than not would be shocked to NOT find that, if they took a DNA test and didn't get a variety of markers back. It's not like a Japanese person whose family has only been in Japan for several generations finding out he has Finnish heritage, you know?

She's apparently ALL Jewish, but doesn't look it.
Elizabeth Shue looks very American or is it just THE TEETH?

"All American' looking Lynda Carter is Mexican/Spanish/French on her mom's side and English/Scottish/Irish on her dad's.

Most of this does not reflect reality. If you want to see real, average looking American people who are representative of the US population, then you need to go to grocery stores, big-box stores and chain restaurants and also at local news segments. This is an average, typical American family. I’m not making fun of them; this is just what actual American people tend to look like when they are not dreassed up.

R204 Daphne Zuniga is another with an American look. like Lynda. Is she Latino? Is she Jewish? Is she Italian? Is she Greek? Is she part Chinese? You wouldn't know to look at her. She just looks "American".

If anything defines “American looking,” it’s mostly attire. Shirts tend to be oversized, with shoulder seams coming halfway down the arm, whereas in Europe, for example, clothes are more tailored. People tend to be oversized here, which I suspect has to do both with our frankenfood and our proclivity to drive everywhere. Probably across the board we have more cosmetically enhanced teeth, with braces and bleaching more likely to be seen as “necessary” to working class people than they would be seen by people of similar means in other countries. Among those who can afford it, I think fake breasts and bleached blonde hair are pretty distinctively American broadly speaking. Likewise, gigantic, overly built muscle men in oversixed tee shirts with fake tans anywhere in the world (except maybe Russia) might signal “American.” It’s a land of extremes—extremely high maintenance or else extremely casual and schlumpy.

R203 Yes, Shue is another one who has a face that yells: Common American Girl. Cornfed or Blue Blood, who knows? Catholic or Jewish, who knows?

Carla Cugino. That's a very American face, you don't really see that look anywhere else. Same with Mira Sorvino, also in "The Buccaneers" based on Edith Wharton's novel about American socialites in the 1870's marrying/bearding up for English aristocrats .

R210 That's interesting, because both Cugino and Sorvino are half Italian, half some sort of British mix(don't know exactly with Sorvino, her mother's maiden name is Davis)
