Celebrities who were always in character
It doesn't happen much anymore: Rip Taylor (manic nelly nutcase); Richard Simmons (manic nelly cheerleader); Charo (ditsy Latina); Carol Channing (Lorelei Lee); Foster Brooks (drunk); Zsa Zsa (airhead gold-digger); Andy Kaufman (mentally ill).
Are Millennials too cool to be clowns?

My grandfather used to perform in the Catskills many years ago, and had worked with Buddy Hacket. He said Buddy was the same, no matter where or when you saw him, he was in character. Perhaps that's just how he actually was.

Paris Hilton is 37 and she's a millennial as well as in character all the time.
So there you go!

Paris Wonky eye Hilton is middle aged, and still acting like she's 19. Of course, no one's paying attention anymore.

Godzilla. Met him on Monster island and he was a 450 ft radioactive dinosaur just like he plays in the movies.

This is Prof. Irwin Corey's only appearance on David Letterman. Despite all of Letterman's attempts to get the Prof. to break character and behave himself, he didn't. It was said that Letterman wouldn't have him back on the show, but I don't know if it was deliberate or not.

Two great British TV comedians, Benny Hill and Ronnie Barker (the taller of the two Ronnies), were both extreme introverts who seldom gave interviews or appeared in public as themselves.

R13 Ronnie Corbett is a good example of a celebrity who was not in character. I recall an interview on the CBC 20+ years ago when he was downright surly and certainly not there to deliver any jollity. I've always wondered what had annoyed him so much.

Robin Williams (exhausting to watch live). However, a terrific screen actor.

While I agree with everything you said, it doesn’t fit the thread. It’s people who never broke character (or were essentially the same person whether it was TV, movies, talk shows, etc.).

Rip Torn as well as Rip Taylor. I loved his arrogant southerner version of King Louis XIV.

Barry Humphries ( Dame Edna ) isn't a great example of 'always in character' though?
He has done loads of interviews as himself and he famously did Parkinson as another character 'Sir Les Patterson' .

Joan Rivers did an interview with Pamela Stephenson where she may or may not have been in character, i'm not sure? But it wasn't one of her standard talk show performances.

Lucille Ball. I don't think she ever could've effectively starred in anything outside of her unique celebrity personality, like "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf," "The Graduate," or "Klute." She was always Lucy to me.

Joan Crawford! She was always a movie star, 24 hours a day. Not in that desperate Norma Desmond way. But she knew how to carry herself in an elegant way for her fans.

R56, Lucille Ball was Frank Sinatra's first choice for the Angela Lansbury part in The Manchurian Candidate.
OK, I find it hard to picture that also.

Judy Tenuta. Larry King had her on his show back in the day and she never answered one of his questions seriously and kept playing her accordion.

The only time I ever saw Foster Brooks not play drunk was on a very special (and very prescient where Jerry Supiran's future was concerned) episode of [italic]Small Wonder[/italic] where he played a homeless man.
