Do you think the Republicans are working overtime to dig up ANY kind of dirt on Pete? Talking to his fellow soldiers from afghanistan? Old colleagues from McKinsey? Old alums from harvard/Oxford? If so, will they get dirt? Will it be bullshit or might there be something valid? I like him so much. But I am still so negative on the state of D.C. Politics
Mayor Pete.

Considering that Pete had no social life, I doubt they'll find anything.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | April 17, 2019 4:14 PM |
Republicans have discovered that it isn't necessary to dig up dirt, they just make up lies and the Trump followers believe what ever they say. It is impossible to prove something didn't happen.

Thanks, obsessive OP. There's been a shortage of threads about this guy.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 17, 2019 4:19 PM |
I think they'll attack his military service. Seriously. They attacked Kerry and his combat medals: his Silver Star, Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts. If you think that Trump isn't the right messenger for that attack, the hypocrisy doesn't matter to Republicans. Consider that there was credible evidence suggesting that Bush may have been a deserter during the time Kerry was swift-boated.

Oppo research is currently being done by Dem competitors, not the GOP, so as to save on resources. The GOP oppo will come out later as the picture around the frontrunner becomes clearer.
And yes, they'll go DEEP. If there was a jerkoff buddy in his military past, they'll sure as hell find him. Question is, will he talk and for how much?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 17, 2019 4:21 PM |
I would hope he has a past. Being a virgin until you are married in your 30s sounds grim.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 17, 2019 4:25 PM |
R6. I hope he wasn't completely a virgin until the age of 33. I have to believe there were some connections or exploration. I have been watching many interviews and he is so well spoken and soft spoken and thoughtful. I have seen many interviews now and I am a little worried he uses the same sound bites over and over. He has been able to speak in fluffy, appeasing sound bites but that will get tested more concretely at some point. I am so jaded though and know not to get excited.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 17, 2019 4:30 PM |
When he was 21, it was still illegal for him to have sex with a guy in Indiana. So we should be praying he didn't have sex before he turned 21, or else he was breaking the law. Not that that stopped Trump from getting elected...
r6 Doesn't sound grim to me at all. Have you [italic]seen[/italic] porn these days? Beats the real stuff, hands down.

Of course, and as R5 correctly states, it's being done by his opponents in the Democratic primaries, not the GOP--GOP has no reason to shit on him until he's the nominee or close to it.

McKinsey is the "Goldman Sachs" of consulting companies. Business / management consulting. They hire out of Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Stanford, for the most part. It is elite academics who chose consulting rather than Inv Banking -- in part, because they fancy themselves more academic. Pete spent most of his time analyzing supermarket customer data. Likely for Yucaipa (a private equity firm that owns tons of supermarkets and a huge McKinsey client). McKinsey and its Board are populated w elite academic types who make a lot of money (not as much as Inv Bankers though).

by Anonymous | reply 49 | April 18, 2019 12:11 AM |
People have told you more than once but, what’s so special about this guy?
He’s smart. He’s well read. He’s talented. He served in the military, unlike the draft dodger in office now. He’s multilingual. He didn’t have rich parents to buy his degree for him, he actually earned it. He earned everything he got.
They give out 32 Rhodes Scholarships per year in the United States. Half are women. So he’s one of 16 men in the United States who got one his year. It’s the most exclusive and hard to get award academically. They do not give them out to rich dummies. Just having one automatically opens doors for you. People tend to take you seriously. Bill Clinton has one.
As far as people saying he has no policies, he talks nothing but policy. People just make up shit because they don’t want yet another white man, no matter what. We can’t elect people on looks or how much of a famewhore they are. Look what’s in the White House.

R50. OP here. Well said. I would add that he has a very temperate demeanor. He seems to listen. Engage. He is present when he is with others. Unless I am missing something here (and fuck knows that could be the case), he seems to be a much needed dose of sanity and decency and, for lack of a better word, manners. I'm sure he will be crucified though and forgotten in a year. Which makes me sad.

Re: McKinsey:
(1) It's a notorious sweatshop, where junior employees are expected to work 80-100 hour weeks and travel constantly, uprooting themselves to live in whatever city their client is in for months or even years at a stretch. At first that sounds glamorous--you get to live in say, Geneva or Buenos Aires for a year on the company dime, but friends who did it say it's hard to make friends and maintain relationships when you are being uprooted every six months.
(2) McKinsey, Bain (Mitt Romney) and BCG have mixed reputations. Many find them to be full of smart people who know nothing about the industry they are consulting on and offer generic advice, telling the people who just paid them $5MM things they already knew. Worse still, they offer no solutions in their first round reports--it's just "here's what we found. Here's what your problems are ... if you want to know how we would fix these problems, you need to hire us for Round Two. That's another $5 million."
(3) Chelsea Clinton's first job was at McKinsey too
(4) It's a good first job in that it's considered great experience for pretty much anything you want to do afterwards.

by Anonymous | reply 56 | April 18, 2019 12:41 AM |
He is so polished and well spoken. I have been home sick this week from work and I have watched pretty much all of his interviews. He has a rote repertoire of responses however they are intelligent and well thought out. This will sound odd, but I want one interviewer to ask him an "off" question to see how he responds to something he has not scripted. I don't know... like "would you open the Area 51 / alien files?" or "have you ever indulged in alcohol or marijuana?"

r57 in this era of "gothca' moments, he cant go too far off script at this point . One minor slip and its over(see: Dean's scream). Its actually quite unfortunate but I am sure he will loosen up with continued climb. He was able to respond "off the cuff" quite well to Notre Dame fire in FRENCH

It is interesting to watch the little things he hasn't "worked out" yet. For instance, he doesn't know how to hold his arms and hands in a relaxed manner when he is standing. Stupid. Petty. I know. I am so invested in his potential success that I have watched too many videos.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | April 18, 2019 12:54 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 87 | April 18, 2019 2:30 AM |
R65, I agree that I think that person was talking about dating Chasten. If that’s any pictures out there, they are Chasten pictures.
The thing is, there are some qualifications you want, and some that you have to have. Is Cory Booker going to be the nominee? No. We already know that. He’s actually held several offices and there no reason to say he’s technically under qualified. But will he win? No.
Beto is pretty light on qualifications too. Will he win the nomination? Probably not, but he could be picked as VP, if the nominee thinks Texas will help them. Being from a certain state or region is a qualification, even if you’re just a doorstop. That’s why JFK picked LBJ, even though he hated him. He was from one end of the country, LBJ was from the other.
If you look at it from the regional point of view alone, Kamala/Pete makes sense. Kamala might be able to get the coasts, but if she doesn’t put a midwestern white guy on the ticket, that could be a mistake. Hillary lost that region.
If Pete somehow gets the nom, a black woman on the bottom half of the ticket would be good, but maybe not Kamala because that would alienate black voters, ironically. “How dare that white man be on the top of the ticket over our queen” type thinking. Somebody who’s less haughty and more down to earth. Pete is too modest to have such a snobby woman, the chemistry isn’t right. She doesn’t fit his message of humility.
But the things you *have* to have to be on the top of the ticket are, the ability to keep your foot out of your mouth, the ability to seem authentic to the voters, the ability to be disciplined and stay on message. The ability to frame your message in a few short, simple words that are understandable to all. The ability to seem likable. Having a nice family that aren’t crazy helps but isn’t a dealbreaker. But a crazy family can fuck you up too. Above all, the ability to speak off the cuff and rebut bad stories quickly. Bill Clinton had that.
Look at the Bill Clinton campaign for a good model of how to run a campaign. Simple message: “It’s the economy, stupid.” Quick response team fighting back against bimbo eruptions. Wife that fought like a dog and helped run the campaign. She didn’t just lie there like a dead fish. Likable, common man candidate. Liked Mcdonalds and doughnuts. Smart as a whip, and a smooth talker. Clinton talked about his religious beliefs a bit too, people knew about them.
Okay, who is that this year?

by Anonymous | reply 90 | April 18, 2019 3:06 AM |
I think that guy could have been Biden twenty years ago, except he absolutely cannot keep his foot out of his mouth. That’s in the top three of qualifications. Maybe number one. We can’t sit there for two years holding our breath waiting for the other shoe to drop, knowing it will. If somebody can’t shut up, they definitely can’t shut up for two years with a camera on them every minute of the night and day. That’s why Biden’s not President now. Has he changed? No.
Pete’s going to get a lot of homophobic attacks. So far he’s handling it ok. Obama was good at handling hecklers, and he got a lot of them. He handled them so well, people respected his graciousness. He made the assholes look bad.
Pete is gracious too, but there comes a time when you need a snappy, but not mean comeback. Can he do it? I don’t know. He does say he’s used to it and I bet he is, judging from the nasty comments in the Indiana newspapers.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | April 18, 2019 3:10 AM |
Trump had no experience and Pres Obama was considered light on being qualified, experience really mattered to me in the past on who I supported but no one was more qualified than Hillary but that didn't help her when the nation chose a fool with zero experience. I will take someone who has to learn on the job over a second term for Trump. Experience really doesn't matter anymore. Intelligence, good decision making, and sanity matter to me now.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | April 18, 2019 3:12 AM |
The main thing is get someone who CAN learn on the job. Trump hasn’t learned a damn thing this whole time. If he was smart, he’d have learned a lot by now and might be ok. But he’s an idiot, and will never get better.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | April 18, 2019 3:20 AM |
The other thing that’s really important, as we have all learned, is to get someone who understands the cabinet has to be the best of the best, the most highly trained and technical, the bureaucrats that know the minutiae of governance.
Mayor Pete might actually have an advantage some others don’t: that he’s run a city, and has filled tons of job openings and run an organization. Considering the new President is going to have to find all the people that were fired from the Obama and other previous Democratic administrations, and hire them back to clean up the mess, that could be an advantage.

R96 I agree. I feel the same way. In fact I am going off the DL until after the election. Now that Pete threw his name in the hat the DL is going to quickly turn into a "Promote Mayor Pete" site. Every other thread will be about Mayor Pete. We already see an obsession with him forming.
I was being sarcastic when I posted R68. Those, like myself, who don't think he's a strong candidate (many here only support him because he's gay) are going to get F&F and Blocked so I figure I might as well leave now. They are going to post constant threads and use the DL to endlessly promote him. Going forward that's all we'll see here is Mayor Pete threads. They'll F&F / Block anyone who dares disagree about Mayor Pete and dares not to support his candidacy so, I'm outta here. It was nice. For the past ten years.

Of course they are. I noticed 2 or 3 threads pop up here the other day the exact time that Pete's interview on MSNBC was starting. Then lots of agreement that "he's done" BS. Throughout Pete Buttigieg's candidacy, and particularly over the next year, no doubt the DL is going to go through some major changes and for one become divided by those who want him as their next president versus those who don't. Gay/LGBT and Anti-Trump united us here for years. Except for a small percentage of DLers the DL is anti-Trump. Now we're going to be be divided by Pete Buttigieg's candidacy; those who support him VS those who don't think he's ready to be POTUS.
Dems divided. Dems against each other. Hating on our own. We'll be an online community of Dems against each other. It's already happening. You can already see the hatred, anger and rage from DLers who fully support PB towards those who aren't convinced he'd be the right person for our next president and aren't convinced he's currently a strong enough candidate. No respect for others' opinions. Those who support PB are viciously attacking those who don't; Dems against Dems. Gays against gays. United we stand, divided we fall....

Pete is getting the attention he is because he’s doing well right now. When Biden announces, some of the field will consolidate and people’s choices will firm up.
If the front runner ends up being Kamala or Beto, people will consolidate around that person. It’s a very broad field right now and several of these people that everyone thought were going to do well aren’t. Several of the women are just not catching on and eventually they’ll run out of money. People will go to their second choice.
Right now Pete’s getting money, so is Bernie and Kamala and Beto. But I bet most of the others aren’t, so that’s probably your real field right here. I’ve even heard Biden is not getting money from anybody but large corporate donors. If that’s true, he isn’t going anywhere.
Wait another three months.

It's more that McKinsey has a reputation for having an insanely stressful, cutthroat work environment (think spreadsheets all day every day, followed by work trips almost weekly holed up in motels in anonymous small midwestern towns). The job can be taxing. Turnover is very high, which I think is definitely due to the fact that a lot of young hires out of these elite schools look at it as a resume builder for B-school applications. Most do want to be i-bankers, but, even coming from elite schools, the majority can't get those jobs right away. So McKinsey, while impressive, is also a concession for requisite experience in the corporate world.

Maybe, its my background in PR, but is anyone else suspicious of all this attention Pete is receiving from the media? What special interests are behind him?
And, yeah, he is way too perfect.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | April 18, 2019 8:00 PM |
McKinsey sucks for more reasons than being a sweatshop. They advise terrible governments all over the globe. They advise clients on how best to fire thousands of employees.
This is who Mayor Pete decided to go work for when he entered the private sector. No thanks. Bad judgment.
From NY Times:
McKinsey’s clients include sovereign wealth funds worth more than a trillion dollars, as well as what one marketing brochure describes as “defense ministries, military forces, police forces and justice ministries in 15 countries,” where the company consults on such matters as the maintenance and support of “armored personnel carriers; minesweepers, destroyers and submarines; and fast jets and transport aircraft.”
McKinsey “is a hidden, unaccountable power that has a prestigious face,” said Janine R. Wedel, a professor at George Mason University who has written extensively on what she calls “the shadow elite.” She added, “Think of them as a repository of the most intimate information that governments and others have, from what they are investing in to who wields influence.”

No, r107. He caught people's attention on a CNN town hall. People started getting interested and he immediately got a bump in the polls. According to Nate Silver, the media interest lagged behind the organic interest. Obviously, he makes himself available to be interviewed everywhere. He's interesting so they keep booking him. Not that hard to figure out.

the media have given him time because he's answered their requests, more established candidates haven't had the interest or time to go to TMZ for an interview. He's young, and like him his audience like diverse media in order to be informed.

Clinton did the same thing. Nobody ever heard of some guy from Arkansas, so he went on Arsenio Hall’s show and other venues Presidential candidates didn’t go to back then. Once people saw his personality, they liked him and he got more coverage. People liked the idea of a young cool President after Mr Stuffy Stick Up His Ass Bush.
I think Pete’s getting some of that sentiment. Pete vs The Fat Orange Cheeto. They’re totally opposite.

He has floored me and I like him a lot. A whole lot. THIS, however, was the first time I saw a little "off". A little disingenuous. A little too polished. I have pretty much memorized his speeches and his turns of phrase by now. This was a regurgitation of every speech he has given thus far. I so want him to be real, viable, and "as advertised". For the first time, he didn't seem his normal humble self in that speech. I dunno. Different from before. (And yeah, please just get a basic black Brooks Brothers tuxedo).

by Anonymous | reply 172 | April 23, 2019 10:22 PM |
R171 The "dirt" I'm concerned with is why he decided to demote the first black police chief because white police officers were recorded saying racist things. I also worry that Pete did nothing to improve the lives of black and brown people in South Bend while Mayor.
by Anonymous | reply 173 | April 23, 2019 10:29 PM |
R172, he jogs.
by Anonymous | reply 174 | April 24, 2019 1:45 AM |
R173, they’re covering this on CNN today.
Here’s what happened: the Police chief was bugging some white officers and found out that they were using racial slurs against him. This was illegal because in their state you cannot bug people without telling them. I don’t know how the FBI found out, but they did, and they came and told Pete the police chief was illegally bugging these cops. Then, according to local law, no one was allowed to listen to the tapes because they were obtained illegally. They weren’t allowable as evidence either because they were illegal.
Pete fired the police chief. He couldn’t do anything to the white cops because for legal reasons he could not even listen to the tapes. So the white cops stayed on and the police chief was fired.
So now the black community thinks Pete is an evil white supremacist who hates all blacks. To make matters worse, he replaced the black police chief with a white police chief. Meanwhile, the police chief sues to release the tapes, which Pete cannot do because they’re illegal. Everybody sues everybody else. The white cops sued or countersued too, because there’s no evidence they did anything and they claim they didn’t.
Meanwhile, the judge in charge of this case had got a request from the white cops’ attorney to dismiss the case (standard procedure). The judge says no, let it go forward, but no date is set. On May 1 he is having a private conference with the attorneys. My guess is he’s going to try to settle it out of court.
This is how the black community is taking this: Pete is an evil card carrying black hating KKK member. Of course he can release a tape it’s illegal for him to release. He’s evil because he doesn’t want to be charged with releasing it although it’s a crime to release it. He should just do whatever they want and not care what happens to himself. The only one that can release the tapes legally is the judge and he hasn’t even considered it yet. But according to them, a mayor can make a judge do whatever the public wants right away.
Meanwhile, the black police chief was re-hired after much protest into a demoted position.
by Anonymous | reply 175 | April 24, 2019 2:32 AM |
That’s a sticky wicket
by Anonymous | reply 176 | April 24, 2019 3:02 AM |
I think what it really tells you is the very poor black community in S.B. are hicks and they have no understanding of standard legal procedure and don’t want to know either. And that people who live outside the community are jumping all over it and don’t understand what going on either, or don’t care, they just want to smear Pete and here’s their chance.
The ideal solution would be for the judge to settle it but he’s in no hurry. Sounded like he was delaying on purpose to smear Pete, because after the CNN Town Hall, people were asking about it and miraculously, it started moving again.
It’s really obvious that the judge is in the driver’s seat, this is not the mayor’s office. So people that are blaming Pete are either ignorant, fans of other candidates fervently looking for any dirt they can find, or Trumpers.
