A Thoughtful Discussion of Contemporary Hollywood Glamour

Who's got it? Who needs it? Who had it and lost it? Currently alive and actively employed only, please. Who are the working actors who still embody an otherworldly, intoxicating glamour? It's more than beauty, style, it's like porn: you know it when you see it.

Jennifer Lawrence tries but doesn't have it and never will.

Gaga wants it but.... no. Glamour doesn't do "needy."

I love Sandra Bullock, but she doesn't have it. (I'm not sure she wants it.)

Meryl never really needed it after making her name.

Amy Adams? Jessica Chastain? Lord love them, but.... again, no.

I submit for your approval, Charlize Theron. She's done "deglamourized" onscreen, but the truth will out, as they say. She is the Real Deal.

Now show me yours.

For "who had it and lost it," Kathleen Turner has to top the list.

I'm not a fan of her comic book movie universe, but at least she's staying busy.

Scarlett's got it.

Your mom has Hollywood Glamour, OP.

by Anonymousreply 3April 16, 2019 2:25 AM

About the only currently working, successful actress with classic Hollywood glamour that I can think of is Lupita Nyong'o.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 4April 16, 2019 2:25 AM

Good choice, R4. I was thinking about her.

Older, wiser now... Natalie Portman.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 5April 16, 2019 2:27 AM

I was going to say Lupita Nyongo!

Always dazzling and fashionable, always beautiful in the chicest possible way, wears the most extreme looks with aplomb, never seen looking like an ordinary slob.

Great topic, but unfortunately Hollywood glamour is lost. Too many crash and burn trainwrecks, or left wing crunchy weirdos. Maybe Halle Berry.

by Anonymousreply 7April 16, 2019 2:30 AM

Too much effort today- exercise, diet, surgery. Very few naturals beauties.

by Anonymousreply 8April 16, 2019 2:32 AM

R8, there is nothing natural about Hollywood glamour!

by Anonymousreply 9April 16, 2019 2:33 AM

There is a delicate balance.

by Anonymousreply 10April 16, 2019 2:35 AM

The type of glamour you think of no longer exists because Internet. We also know too much about how publicity photos are doctored and photoshopped.

by Anonymousreply 11April 16, 2019 2:35 AM

Lupita

Margo Robbie

Chadwick Bosman

Zendaya

Jeff Goldblum

2 x Scarlett

2 x Natalie

by Anonymousreply 12April 16, 2019 2:36 AM

Paz de la Huerta. Just kidding. I can’t think of a single one. Maybe Nicole Kidman back in the day.

But I like Sofia Coppola and her low-key style.

by Anonymousreply 13April 16, 2019 2:37 AM

Eva Green

by Anonymousreply 14April 16, 2019 2:40 AM

I haven't seen much of Margo Robbie, but I'm inclined to agree.

by Anonymousreply 20April 16, 2019 2:47 AM

If anyone had it and lost it, it was Angelica Houston!

Not that she isn't still a fabulous ruin these days, great in her own way, but the opposite of glamour.

by Anonymousreply 21April 16, 2019 2:48 AM

Janelle Monáe

I love Julianne Moore but I'm unsure if she's (merely) beautiful, photogenic, and likes beautiful clothes.

Oh, screw it. Julianne has IT.

by Anonymousreply 24April 16, 2019 2:54 AM

Agree on Monae and Houston

Nic Hoult sometimes seems to have a glamorous vibe, to me

I think Steve Carell has it, in a handsome old-school way

by Anonymousreply 25April 16, 2019 2:55 AM

Hollywood doesn't have much use for glamour anymore since it doesn't appeal to their main demographic today which worships superhero movies and women who are sexy but "relatable". We may not like it, but that's the way it is. JLaw symbolized what I'm talking about until the Weinstein scandal, which was too much even for Hollywood. It's OK to be trashy and fart in public but being the main slampiece of a sex pest simply wouldn't fly.

Pure old school glamour = Kristin Scott Thomas

by Anonymousreply 26April 16, 2019 2:56 AM

Sharon Stone

by Anonymousreply 27April 16, 2019 2:59 AM

Young Vanessa Redgrave had it, and still has traces of it, no matter how she looks.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 28April 16, 2019 2:59 AM

I like this young Vanessa better. Effortless.

By contrast, Redgrave's contemporary, Jane Fonda is still working, looking as fit, fabulous as ever. Jane could be sexy, pretty, funny, boyish, what have you... but I never thought she wore "glamour" with any authenticity. One saw the effort.

Jude Law

by Anonymousreply 31April 16, 2019 3:13 AM

Natalie Portman, even with her nose job, has never been a glamorous woman.

For many years now, the only photos of Charlize show her looking haggard and dragging around a screaming African boy wearing a tutu.

Catherine Zeta Jones is the closest to glamorous.

Cate Blanchet

Tilda Swinton

by Anonymousreply 36April 16, 2019 3:35 AM

Tilda, oh yes!

by Anonymousreply 37April 16, 2019 3:36 AM

Ah, yes. Cate Blanchet!

by Anonymousreply 38April 16, 2019 3:36 AM

Cate Blanchett

Nicole Kidman (a long, long, long time ago)

by Anonymousreply 39April 16, 2019 3:37 AM

Tilda Swinton is as glamorous as a person can be, but in a distinctly modern way. A representative of Hollywood glamour she is not.

Cate Blanchett and Lupita Nyongo come the closest to the old-school gals.

by Anonymousreply 40April 16, 2019 3:48 AM

I think Monica Bellucci has a very lush, sexy kind of glamour.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 41April 16, 2019 3:49 AM

But Lupita needs a glam ROLE too.

Enough with the flight attendants and chess players...

I know, it’s hard to find roles. Hollywood is so narrow minded.

by Anonymousreply 42April 16, 2019 4:23 AM

Kim Basinger, had it and lost it along the way, I blame Alec Baldwin.

by Anonymousreply 43April 16, 2019 4:34 AM

Michelle Pfeiffer.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 44April 16, 2019 4:37 AM

I think real glamour can make a T-shirt and jeans or the simplest dress look effortlessly chic.

This white dress wouldn't look like much on a hanger. On Lupita it's stunning.

R32 your comments on Charlize made me chuckle guiltily.

by Anonymousreply 46April 16, 2019 4:56 AM

Kate Beckinsale has it, and she hasn't lost any of it. She should steer away from Pete before she does.

by Anonymousreply 47April 16, 2019 5:06 AM

Elizabeth Debicki is not particularly famous, but she has a certain old school glamour that isn't too common anymore. I'll echo the earlier suggestion of Margot Robbie too. Jean Reno has it as well, though he isn't well known to American audiences . I would also add Gabriel Byrne.

by Anonymousreply 48April 16, 2019 5:21 AM

by Anonymousreply 49April 16, 2019 5:25 AM

by Anonymousreply 63April 16, 2019 4:13 PM

by Anonymousreply 64April 16, 2019 4:52 PM
