JFK JR wasn't a good person was he?
Just been reading more and more. The famous quote attributed to him is that he wanted to be a good man and people who knew him had nothing bad to say about him.
But it seems that just like his dad he was a compulsive cheat, so clearly not a good man. He had a temper also and was more republican.

I went to Brown with him. He was a sweet man. Positive. Nice. Engaging. And never "played" the Kennedy card. I got to know him well in college and then reconnected in NYC when he was working for DA. We worked out at the Downtown Athletic Club (long gone). My brush with fame was meeting him outside Jackie's Fifth Avenue place to head downtown in a cab. Jackie had just come in from a walk in the park and I met her.

I read a book by a man who worked with him on his beloved GEORGE Magazine. And he also said that his wife Carolyn didn't try to interfere or influence his magazine.

R26. Yes. The Downtown Athletic Club used to be a men's only club. And yes, nude swimming. About 1992, when there was some big lawsuit against the University Club and the Raquet Club, they had to go co-ed. Despite that, it remained pretty much (95%) male. One of those old school places with about ten floors of workout things (boxing, weight room, wrestling area !, etc). Also had a hotel for members. It's now a condo.

I also have a JFK jr encounter.
Back in the 90s, my little twirl posse would go to Sound Factory from 2am until around 8am on a Sunday, then go spread a blanket out in Central Park and crash. It was fun to fall asleep when the meadow was empty and wake up to it being totally jam packed. Anyway, one morning when we did this I woke up to JFK jr and his friends playing frisbee right near us. They had clearly already made a couple of lighthearted jokes about us (we were super-faggy club kids in mascara and glitter) because as I was stretching JFK jr turned to me and said “oh good, you’re alive! We were going to call an ambulance. But looks like you had a great time!”
I just laughed and also blushed. He was so so sexy. And in that brief interaction, you could tell he was really nice, too.
God, I miss THAT NYC.

Isn't that why his mother didn't want him to be a actor because she was afraid of him being gay? But to be fair she strongly did not want him to be a magazine editor either because the chances of it being a success were so slim.
The Kennedy fortune was made off of illegal activities. All that money was Irish mob money. Al Capone had more class than old Joe. I don't believe in Karma but that guy got it in spades.
And then Jackie was Melania though natve born. Bought by the Kennedys and then by Ari who had all the integrity of Sam Giancana. John Jr and Caroline's wealth was/is blood money. There Isn't an honest cent in any of it

I saw the episode of sex and the city recently where Samantha fucks with some rich guy - and his socially connected wife walks in on them. Suddenly Samantha is doomed professionally as the wife has her blackballed from doing PR for lots of major events....
I hadn’t seen the episode - or any episodes - for years - since it was originally broadcast! - but remembered it clearly. At the end, Samantha volunteers for some charity event thing that involves physically working - and she meets JFK Jr - and one gathers she charms him and spends enough time with him - and so is completely socially rehabilitated.
The actor playing JFK Jr appears to help her up as if he’s appeared kinda magically out of the sun - and is so backlit that you can’t actually identify him. But the whole scenario was kinda cheeky and of its time.
Anyway - it must’ve been broadcast not that long before he died - because it had been changed. Samantha now meets Leo Di Caprio. I was gobsmacked. A little bit of perfect nineties social history had been changed. As if knowing Di Caprio would have enhanced you socially amongst that demographic. Puh-lease. So disappointed! Was quite angry they’d changed it - still can’t quite get why it meant so much to me.... weird!

R103 here. I saw John Jr twice close up. He used to eat at a vegetarian place on I believe West 3rd when he was studying at N.Y. University. The first time I didn't recognise him but I thought he was a movie star. His good looks and aura were incredible. He was by himself both times reading a paper. His photos don't do him justice and I thought he was sexy and unassuming as fuck.
Though I don't doubt he was a nice guy the Kennedy fortune was built on rumrunning and the patriarch was as nasty Irish Catholic as they come and that's pretty nasty. And his appeasment policy towards Hitler horrified Franklin and Eleanor.
Ari was a pirate and dumped Callas and Lee the minute he could get his sweaty peasant paws on the porcelain courtesan Jackie. Another target karma made mincemeat of.
The Kennedy image is a joke. Class bought with the fortunes of gangsters. Just not far enough in the past. And JFK gave us the Berlin Wall, The Bay of Pigs and Vietnam. A terrible terrible legacy.

Joe Kennedy was hardly a nice guy but the family fortune wasn't built on rum-running. It was built on stock manipulation during the 1920's. He was better at it than the people at Kidder, Peabody and Company, though, and so the WASP's hated him. They hated the Irish anyway, but they hated him more because he made fools of them. His appeasement policy, until the bombs started falling, btw, was exactly the same as that of the King and Queen of England, of the-then PM Neville Chamberlain, and most of Britain's ruling class.
And as "nasty Irish Catholic and that's pretty nasty" says way more about you- and not flatteringly - than it does about anyone else, even Joe Kennedy.

I couldn't say either way. The assassination made Kennedy, in memory, seem a lot more popular than he was at the time. It would have been a tough battle for reelection. I'm just really commenting on why he would deescalate and withdraw from Vietnam. Especially after losing Cuba and the fact that the Vietnam war was unpopular at the time. In 64 it was barely on the radar. He wasn't going to take a hit for it.

How do they know? It was his war he had to win it. The PT 109 was a joke spun by his father.
JFK 's Prize winning Profiles in Courage were written by other men.
He escalated the cold. Joe was smart. A criminal but smart. Bob Kennedy was fighting the mob when it got his brother elected? How stupid could one be? And Ted as we all know was a cowardly disaster.
And the above poster knows no Irish Catholics or even Catholics in general which says a lot about him. Or else is a Catholic and is so superstitious his mind has turned to mush.
