Newark police tell CNN: they were planning for a crowd of as many as 10,000 people for Cory Booker’s kickoff rally. The program still hasn’t started (it was set to begin at 11:30a), but it’s clear the attendance is far smaller than expected.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 13, 2019 5:54 PM |
There’s really no way to spin this turnout for Booker. It was rainy early this morning but had cleared by the time I arrived on site around 9a. Now it’s sunny and beautiful. No problems with security/folks accessing the site.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 13, 2019 5:55 PM |
Pathetic.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 13, 2019 5:56 PM |
This has to hurt. Not even sure how you continue after this. Looks like the high school football stands for a team that never wins.
Particularly insulting because he’s doing this in a highly liberal area with a huge population. And I suspect Buttigieg’s rollout will be huge and it’s in the middle of nowhere.
Serves Booker right for bearding with that Hillary hating bitch.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 13, 2019 5:57 PM |
Booker’s desperate to be Obama 2.0. About 16 other candidates will be joining him in the loser bin.

Cory must be raging inside seeing all of the press and buzz an openly gay candidate is getting.
It's going to be too embarrassing to come out now. This means several more years, if not an entire lifetime, of bearding stunts.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | April 13, 2019 6:06 PM |
Maybe because his gayness is one of politic's worst kept secrets and they are weary of fakeness. Pete Buttegieg is open and out. Chicago has a black openly lesbian mayor. Bridgeport, PA's mayor is a gay black man fighting racism and homophobia every day. Just come out Corey. Of course now it would look pandering, but whatever.

R24, absolutely. Then he could have complete control over the crowd optics.
Also, people in the Northeast have many other ways to spend a Saturday. A presidential announcement isn't going to be a big deal like in a small town in the Midwest.

not surprising at all, and despite the press buildup and the polls for biden, he isnt going to draw crowds either. people with no imagination, or zero knowledge of current politics recognize the name of biden and that is why his poll #s are what they are.

Miss Cory is a complete mess.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | April 13, 2019 8:58 PM |
I have my favorites but none of them are worth getting out of bed for until we see them on the big stage. After the first debate, I think people will ready to start publicly supporting candidates. Most Dems I know are worried sick about Trump getting a second term, a very likely scenario, thus we need someone that can handle the job. Cory is such a weak candidate that I wouldn't even want him to be VP. I'd think being a senator would be better than a cabinet position, but I may be wrong.
We want to avoid backing a Robot Rubio. Great on paper, terrible at game time.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | April 13, 2019 9:33 PM |
r50 not really. Republican's have an absolute rockstar candidate that fires up his base. If we don't beat him in 2020, then he will turned into a God-like figure 10x worse than Reagan. Trust me the Republicans don't need to worry right now. Depending on our candidate, that could change , but the economy, Trumps effective communication, and Republicans hatred for a everyone else gives him a major boost.

by Anonymous | reply 57 | April 13, 2019 11:09 PM |
Buttigieg is having his rollout tomorrow and Chasten has been tweeting about it. They are inviting people from out of town to come. I’ve seen tweets from gays from several states away saying they are bringing their family members because to them it’s like blacks waiting for Obama’s announcement for the 2008 election.
It will be interesting to see how many come for this.
So what about Booker? Is he making his announcement to an empty lawn? How depressing for him.

Not quite empty, around 4000 people showed up (after they delayed the start by 2 hours.) They were expecting 10,000 so less than half what they planned for. Pretty disappounting turnout on a beautiful spring day in his hometown. Remember the crowds Klobuchar got at her kickoff in Minnesota, waiting for hours in a blizzard?
I’ll be interested to see Butta-however it’s spelled’s crowd tomorrow.

This is not a defense of Jeb! Bush generally, because I loathe him, but if you watch that "Please clap" clip below, it appears that he's sort of joking rather than pathetically pleading.
It is true that the audience is not reacting strongly to what should have been an applause line. But he's wearing a half-smile, as if aware that he just doesn't have it but protocol demands a little something from the crowd.
I'm glad he's gone from the political scene, along with his entire family, but what's wrong with him is a lot worse than his tired homilies and lack of spark.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | April 14, 2019 12:55 AM |

Buttigeig's announcement has been moved inside because of really lousy weather. It will be held in an old Studebaker Automobile factory building instead of outside and they have cut the expected attendance in half to 5,000.
Too bad he couldn't have held it today in South Bend the weather was sunny and beautiful but I suppose he didn't want to mess with Booker's announcement plus Notre Dame was holding their intra squad spring football game today.
