I was just looking at that tonight on a cinema app, and took a hard pass the moment I saw LaBeouf was the adult male lead. He's basically Miles Teller with more tattoos and a less potato-like face.

His dad really messed him up--the film HONEY BOY, which is his story of his childhood, is about a failed actor working as a rodeo clown, and insisting his young son have the career he never had. (Which we've seen a thousand times before, with Kit Culkin and his children, Teri Shields and her daughter, Brandi Forster and her daughter... going all the way back to Rose Hovick and her daughters June Havoc and Gypsy Rose Lee.) The difference is that Shia's dad was very physically abusive, which most of the other stage parents were not. So like so many child actors, Shia grew up feeling like his acting career was foisted upon him, and found himself an adult star with a hatred of male authority, a penchant for substance abuse, and confusion as to why he is a star in the first place.

That all being said, you can only blame your parents so far for how scrwewed up you are, and then you have to take some responsibility for it. He did some really stupid things like the "I am not famous" performance installation (in which he says he was sexually molested by a female attendee!) and all his brushes with the law.

He reminds me a lot of Robert Downey, Jr., who also was fucked up by his father, and who was also given a million chances to reform, and kept failing. the public still loved RDJ, though, and when he FINALLY got off drugs he became a big star. I would guess the same COULD happen to Shia, and I give him credit for straightening himself out in the last year or so and not getting in trouble with the law or fighting with people or causing scenes any more. It helps that he's hot (that also helped RDJ with the public a lot too).

Just got back from seeing The Peanut Butter Falcon—it's the first thing I've seen Shia in since he did Nymphomaniac. It was rather predictable, but good-hearted and well-acted. Shia was great in it, and there was solid chemistry between him, Zack Gottsagen, and Dakota Johnson. I frankly cannot fathom how people find Shia unattractive. He is wacky and reckless and I'm not excusing his negative personality traits, but physically speaking, he is gorgeous—10/10, dream husband material.
