The L.A Times is going nuts over Beto
Is it pronounced “Bee-toe” or “Bay-toe”?

That dumb nickname is him in a nutshell. Just too twee to live.

He's speaking at the National Action Network conventions in NYC. Kind of cringey.

R8 the people who said his launch was underwhelming. I like Mayor Pete but you can't deny that thousands of people live Beto and he's pretty much in the top 5 in many polls

Pete didn't even bother to do a launch.

by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 3, 2019 6:00 PM |
I noticed that Beto released his first quarter numbers today. He collected $9.4 million in his first 18 days. He's behind Bernie and Kamala, but ahead of Pete. TPM figured it out to Beto averaging $522,000 a day, Bernie averaging $444,000, Harris at $171,000 a day, and Pete at $103,000 a day. The others haven't reported yet.
That's not bad considering he's only been in the race for under three weeks.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 4, 2019 1:01 AM |
He’s not generating buzz like Pete.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 4, 2019 5:37 AM |
Beto is clearly a force finishing 3rd right behind Kamala Harris with only 2 1/2 weeks .

The problem is comes off very maniacal while speaking.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 4, 2019 1:25 PM |

Mayor Pete was (and I think still is) here in DC. The gays had a fundraiser for him the other night. And so the social media feeds have him all over, either in pics with people or by them posting favorable articles about him.
Eh. I'll vote for him if he's the nominee, but I'm not enthusiastic about him becoming the nominee. I much prefer Beto.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 5, 2019 11:00 PM |
I think that gays need to stand behind Mayor Pete.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 5, 2019 11:03 PM |
Not only should gays stand behind Mayor Pete, the fact that (judging by DL) so many gays apparently support O'Rourke because of his looks gives the appearance of confirming all the worst historical stereotypes of the gay community. You should be ashamed of yourself.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | April 5, 2019 11:09 PM |
R6 He should not be associating with Sharpton. I don’t get why most of the Democratic candidates are bowing before him. Obama didn’t.

Beto's campaigning in Iowa. Yesterday he gave Trump hell about his Nazi racist rhetoric. The rightwing's gone nuts but the left is delighted. No more Mr. Nice Guy. Here's a Fox News reporter trying to trap him..

Both Beto and Pete spoke at the Sharpton event. Beto spoke - as usual - without notes or teleprompter. Pete was reading most of his speech.

Beto kisses the ring
Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke appeared Wednesday to back off his initial opposition to slavery reparations, saying he would support a bill in Congress to study and consider the payments.
The former three-term congressman from Texas made his comments during an appearance in New York before the National Action Network, a civil rights organization founded by Al Sharpton.
Asked by Sharpton if he would back a measure introduced by Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a fellow Texan, O’Rourke answered, “absolutely I would sign that into law.”
The comments by O’Rourke represent an apparent shift on the issue for the White House contender.
Campaigning in Iowa last month, O’Rourke indicated he was not in favor of traditional reparations but stressed that it was crucial for the nation to confront the truth of how black people have been treated in America and that systematic racism exists in the country.
And a few days later, campaigning in New Hampshire, O’Rourke said: “I don’t believe… that [reparations] should be the primary or initial focus of the conversation."
by Anonymous | reply 25 | April 5, 2019 11:15 PM |
Jackson-Lee's law doesn't stipulate payments, it sets up a commission to study how to address persistent racial inequality in the US. Reparations would only be a second act resulting from the conclusions of the commission.

OK - it looks like Beto's audiences include a lot of horny college girls just like in Texas. He's giving a speech on Facebook at some college and he comes in and they all scream like he's the Beatles.

Beto's held 45 events so far - and that's in only 2 weeks. The others have done few events. Beto kept that blistering pace up for 2 years in Texas. He can do it in the Presidential race too. He'll out-campaign everybody else.

I know nothing of any of the democratic candidates stances( not including Sanders and warren) except Biden seems to think the dems should go for the middle and ignore the left of the party. Also its idiotic to pay any attn to polls, especially at this point. Virtually every poll in the country had clinton winning by 5 points in 2016. Pollsters and pundits are morons who cant do anything else for a liviing. Ive heard vaguely Beto is a phony but I have no idea. Trump dominates the narrative and until later in the year when 2020 elections start to get more serious, its just white noise.

The only electable Dems are Beto and Biden. Only they can get crossover votes in red and purple states. Only Beto can carry Texas. And Trump cannot win without Texas. Which explains why the GOP's trolling him 24/7. The others can only win blue states and we can't take the White House with only them.

Pete's getting non-stop publicity from the MSM and Beto's getting bashed non-stop by the MSM. This explains that. But Pete (like Beto before him) is starting to get trashed for taking attention away from more qualified women candidates. He's gonna be in the doghouse soon.

by Anonymous | reply 52 | April 12, 2019 11:18 PM |
I agree that Mayor Pete stole Beto's thunder...Beto needs to be more proactive and be all over the media like Mayor Pete. Just compare their Twitter accounts...Mayor Pete is being very aggressive staking out positions on many issues....while Beto has a single tweet about Dreamers and several tweets about knocking on doors of potential voters.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | April 12, 2019 11:43 PM |
R53 Although I agree to an extent, I think Mayor Pete is also getting INVITED to do more media because he's a "novelty act" so to speak. Eventually the novelty will wear off and the media will move on.

Beto couldn’t even win a Texas Senate race in a blue wave election against Ted Cruz. He won’t win TX in a Pres election. I don’t see Dems winning TX regardless of who is running in 2020.
I’ve seen Beto speak and he’s a good looking guy who speaks like an average liberal politician.
Pete is stealing his thunder because he’s in another league intellectually.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | April 13, 2019 12:01 AM |
Polls right now, at this stage and at this time are popularity based. Pete is getting air time and doing interviews which is why he's getting popular. That doesn't mean he'll necessarily win or manage to keep it up.
Let's see what happens when the Summer debates come.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | April 13, 2019 2:48 AM |
R56 silly boy. Beto got 4million+ votes and came within 2.4% of defeating a Republican incumbent. Texas hasn't elected a Democratic Senator since 1988. Cruz's approval rating in Texas is currently 50%. Trump's current approval rating in Texas is 39%. A Democratic who can carry Texas blocks Trump's path to victory.
Pete's only statewide race was for State Treasurer. He lost by 40% in a state Obama carried in 2008. Why isn't Pete running for Congress or the Senate or Governor or anything else? Because he cannot win obviously.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | April 13, 2019 8:08 PM |

R62 whether you want to admit it or not but looks and sex appeal matter to the Democratic voters. You need a certain amount of sex appeal and good "looks" to win.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | April 14, 2019 12:20 PM |
That Pete has stolen Beto’s mojo is not in dispute and is something many are discussing. But it is interesting to see articles like this try to explain how it happened and mention the very things that were brought up in previous threads about the hollowness of Beto and his candidacy that got people called haters and even blocked for pointing out the obvious.
I am not a Beto supporter, but I want for the Democratic nominee to beat Trump. I agree it’s still early and there’s a chance he might even change course. But it has to be a radical shift if he wants to be taken seriously down the line and hope current perceptions of him don’t have legs because his launch was a disaster.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | April 16, 2019 10:57 AM |
Is the Beto troll on suicide watch now?
by Anonymous | reply 66 | April 16, 2019 4:08 PM |
The emergence of Mayor Pete exposed the hollowness and the "there's no there there" element of Beto. Pete is like Beto's smarter, younger brother and he is being courted by the media as the second coming of Obama. As much as I hate to give Trump any sort of credit, the second he pointed out the hand gestures thing, it's almost all I could notice about Beto when he did his Iowa rollout. Just too much gesticulating and not enough substance or gravitas.
Even Nicolle Wallace has jumped from the Beto bus to the Mayor Pete train.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | April 16, 2019 5:17 PM |
Don't count Beto out yet. He's still drawing large and enthusiastic crowds everywhere he goes. The difference is the media has stopped reporting on him because they're incapable of covering more than one person or subject at a time.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | April 16, 2019 8:20 PM |
R67 that's gonna change. Steve Kornacki just analyzed fundraising figures. Pete's supporters are all white people, the vast majority with an income over $100K. Pete also lost districts in South Bend with voters who were POC. Though the population of South Bend is 40% POC - nothing but white people showed up at his launch.
He is already being called Mayo Pete on black twitter. He can't go anywhere without the support of POC and he doesn't have it. Beto rates higher with black voters than Kamala does - second only to Biden.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | April 16, 2019 8:55 PM |

Pete will not be able to attract voters from the South. It's really that simple. Beto can bring them in, the independents in the Midwest, Hispanic and female voters.
AND Texas going blue would be sooooooo sweet
by Anonymous | reply 71 | April 16, 2019 9:05 PM |
I don’t think Texas is ready to go blue yet. They keep voting for Cruz, who is a repulsive human being. Anyone who can vote for that space alien is voting party, not personality, because the only personality he has is “repulsive,” dialed to 11.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | April 16, 2019 9:15 PM |
Kamala (top of the ticket) + Mayor Pete (bottom) = all blacks all gays all victory baby. Sorry Beto, Pete is IN!
by Anonymous | reply 73 | April 16, 2019 9:20 PM |
It will be a national election, R72, and the Senate race in Texas last year was very close. Many told Beto to challenge it. I think they're primed to go blue.
Pete peaked too soon, R73, and he's too controversial. The church goers aren't happy with his 'attacks' on Mother and her babyIn the South it's still all about keeping the guns, making God the mission, and repudiating the gay. Acknowledging it won't hurt you and you don't have to drag down Beto for Pete's sake.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | April 16, 2019 9:23 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 76 | April 16, 2019 9:40 PM |
R75, that and the fight with Pence clan. The xtians are not pleased with him and the independents would rather vote for someone electable.
Guns, God, and gays are what concern the voters he'll have to attract to win. I'm not sure how he'll manage it, franky, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him chosen as a VP or part of a Democratic administration.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | April 16, 2019 9:47 PM |
Any Christian person who loves Mother Pence is a Republican. There are plenty of Christians who are Democrats and liberals. Mother seems to have let it drop for now so maybe it didn’t turn out as well as he thought.
“Mayo Pete” isn’t a political commentary, it’s a racist slam against somebody for being white.
Would it be okay to call a black candidate “Black Pete”?
by Anonymous | reply 78 | April 16, 2019 9:52 PM |
I don't really care what "Black Twitter" is saying.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | April 16, 2019 9:59 PM |
R79, I normally don’t either, but Jesus Christ, according to those people Pete is Satan. I’ve never seen such animosity towards a Democratic candidate by black people. You’d think he was doing interviews wearing a white hood.
The only thing I can figure is they want Kamala to win and it looks like she’s not going to. They’re only going after one person, him. And a lot of it is outright lies and gaslighting.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | April 16, 2019 10:03 PM |
Meanwhile, Beto has been driving through the South and picking up allegiances and endorsements from black elected reps.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | April 16, 2019 10:14 PM |
Beto has had massive crowds in South Carolina, North Carolina and now in Virginia. Lot of black audiences too. I'm thinking he can not only carry Texas but North Carolina too.
His twitterfeed's full of selfies with college girls black, white and Hispanic - all with Hearts-Eyes. He's got the coed vote locked up.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | April 17, 2019 2:25 AM |
I've noticed that Pete's crowds overwhelmingly look a lot like him: white. That may be OK in Iowa and NH. But that won't play in South Carolina, NC, or Virginia. On the other hand, Beto's crowds seem exceptionally diverse, by race, gender, and age.

Harris has zero chance in Texas. It'll be Beto with 10% hardcore lefties for Bernie and 10% lunatic Asians for Yang.
R101 Beto increased the millennial vote by 500% in Texas. Judging from his rallies, every college girl in Texas has a crush on him and got off their asses to vote.
I don't see why Harris would have any 'natural' support in Nevada. She has no appeal to Latinos.

Harris will get California and Texas will go to Beto, but Nevada comes first in the Calendar. If Beto/Harris do not finish 1 or 2 in Nevada, expect to see them drop out of the race. LA and San Fran are not white cities. I don't care what people say. However, Pete is actually not courting the minority vote and that might hurt him in the long run (in fact, it could be as soon as Iowa and New Hampshire primaries are over). O'Rourke, Castro, and Harris are climbing rather quick in the polls. Biden and Sanders are still leading in the polls, but as NALEO cited, it is mostly on name recognition which is a poor indicator of sustainability in competitive primaries.

OK. But that's not what the poster above said. He said that
he's only popular in NYC, DC, LA and SF. His support is strictly upper middle class white people living in those solid blue cities.
His support comes largely from white people living in those cities -- not that the cities themselves are largely white. And I think that's accurate. Here in DC the gay millennials are going nuts over Pete. But I don't get the same sense from people who aren't gay or white.

So he proposed creating things that already exist. Twitter is taking the micky out of him badly.

Pete's great and so is Beto. I'm really happy to have some young, engaged candidates in the race.
I'd have to say that Beto has the best chance of winning as I see it now. I love what Pete is saying, but I don't think he can attract much of the independent vote in the South or the Latino vote. Beto could.
I also think Beto would mop the floor with lying Don. Pete may have some problems with that and be peaking a bit too early.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | April 20, 2019 1:08 AM |
I think that you are correct R116. I expect Beto will do decently in Iowa and New Hampshire but not necessarily win either one. I would expect him to win in Nevada and South Carolina. And win big on the first Super Tuesday.

There was never any logic behind the Beto candidacy. Never.
He is HOT AS HELL. I'll give you that. Probably the best looking politician in the country. And he's generally liberal and seems like a nice enough guy.
But there was no substance behind it. There never has been. If you want to do anything more than oogle your candidate he doesn't offer you anything.
Some of you say we need a white male to win. I don't agree with that even a little, but even if you feel that way you have to admit Pete is a more solid option. There's something going on between his ears.
And I say this as someone who basically likes him and happily donated to his Senate campaign. I think given sometime in the senate with serious lawmakers he probably could learn a lot. He's a smart guy. But he's just not ready for something like this
by Anonymous | reply 119 | April 20, 2019 3:17 PM |
The logic behind the Beto candidacy is that in a Presidential year, he can carry Texas and the GOP cannot win the Presidency without Texas.
How thick are you people? Pete - or Mayo Pete as black twitter calls him - can't win anything beyond ultra-blue states. He's no use to the Dems. And his lack of support with PoC will kill off his campaign.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | April 20, 2019 9:39 PM |
R120 Gets it. This isn't about policies. Or experience. This is about Winning At All Costs. We have to nominate someone who can WIN. Deal with the niceties later, but first we have to save the fucking country from disaster.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | April 20, 2019 9:43 PM |
That would be a much stronger case had he won Texas, but he didn't. Rather than gamble with a reach state, its safer to just go for the states Obama won, which was plenty.
There are absolutely SOME voters who just want a pretty face and some charisma and don't care about anything else. But there weren't enough to win Texas and I genuinely don't believe there are enough to win the presidency.
Look at that lard Trump. Hideous, disgusting human being inside and out but he won anyway. Beto isn't the surefire winner you think he is. And his poll numbers back that up
by Anonymous | reply 122 | April 20, 2019 10:23 PM |
Oh please. Poll numbers at this point are meaningless.
Some people want to call the primary race a few weeks into this. We are months away from any votes being cast.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | April 20, 2019 10:43 PM |
His fans here set VERY high expectations for him saying things like Biden was afraid of him and he would be the immediate front runner.
That's part of why his polling (which is meh but not bad) seems worse than it actually is
by Anonymous | reply 124 | April 21, 2019 1:23 AM |
Beto's polling is meh right now because the media has been all over Mayor Pete to the exclusion of every other candidate, so Pete now has major name recognition in his favor (along with Biden.)

Pete's got big problems with black people. Black pundits - Jamil Smith, Jason Johnson - have started the attack. He has a really bad record with POC in South Bend.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | April 21, 2019 1:49 AM |
Beto arguably got as far as he is right now because of excessive coverage. The press are fickle. Fair weather friends as they say. Any strategy based on them giving you good coverage is doomed
by Anonymous | reply 127 | April 21, 2019 1:50 AM |
Pete’s “really bad record” involves a police chief illegally bugging some officers who were doing something wrong. When Pete found out about the illegal bugging, the police chief was fired. Because the police chief is not supposed to be a criminal, not because Pete is a hood-wearing bigot.
Meanwhile, there’s lawsuits in every direction because blacks want the tapes, the tapes were made illegally and if they were released it would be a crime. But Black Twitter doesn’t care, they just want the tapes, they didn’t want the police chief fired, and the want the tapes illegally played. Here in real life, if you have evidence of wrongdoing that’s collected illegally and released, the criminal can be let go because it prejudices his case.
If you don’t like Pete, fine. But please don’t spread lies about a candidate.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | April 21, 2019 3:48 AM |
This is not just about Pete. If I read on Black Twitter that Beto is a Martian, and therefore not eligible to run for President, I would correct that too. Because some one of these people is going to be either the nominee or maybe the VP, and letting lies about them just sit out there is not ok. Be accurate.
There appears to be a lot of false reporting on Black Twitter about a lot of things, and I’m wondering if some of these people are Russians trying to stir up shit. It’s just too many people posting stuff that is obviously false or doesn’t make any sense, and then somebody else picks it up.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | April 21, 2019 3:55 AM |
R129 Im wondering if your the troll. What is your beef with black twitter? Do you spend any time on twitter? Just about every major group there talks up their candidates and attacks all others. Frequently with misinformation. It's rampant and isn't tied to any race in particular so I'm not sure why you're bringing race into it
by Anonymous | reply 130 | April 21, 2019 3:57 AM |
Because there are some very angry people on Black Twitter that are really riling people up with false information.
I started seeing a bunch of stuff on my feed from people I don’t follow and know nothing about, and they were repeatedly talking about how they heard from somebody that is a popular source on there, that Pete is evil, so therefore you must vote for Kamala, etc. I had been researching some of the candidates and I knew what they were saying wasn’t even honest mistakes, unless they’re complete morons. It was deliberately twisting things around or outright lying.
Then all these people would post responses saying they believed it, without checking for themselves.
It was just way too calculated. This wasn’t some random person saying, I love Kamala, this was people with large followings posting something and all their fans would pick it up. And they were described as people that others listen to.
And I saw very few “I love Kamala” posts. Most of them were, so-and-so is a devil worshipper who eats babies, vote Kamala. Regular people don’t spend all their time attacking other candidates and nothing on their preferred candidate.
It has been noted recently that Russians are on Black Twitter and they were also using black avatars in 2016. They're doing it on Facebook too. They tried in 2016 to turn blacks against Hillary and others and had some success.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | April 21, 2019 4:08 AM |
Michael Tracy, Jack Posobiec, and Mike Cernovich are three white people with large followings who spend all day spreading nonsense. And that was literally just off the top of my head
And that's not to even mention conspiracy theories like Qanon.
If you are only seeing angry black people on twitter its either a reflection of who you follow. You sound like you just want a reason to spread racial divisiveness
by Anonymous | reply 132 | April 21, 2019 4:12 AM |
I literally do not follow these people. They just dropped into my twitter feed one day and I had no idea why they were there. I found that very weird because I don’t usually follow that type of person anyway. Most of the people I follow are journalists and newspapers. I don’t follow celebrities or personalities.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | April 21, 2019 4:14 AM |
I think you have to accept that twitter has certainly been infiltrated by Russians by now. I read recently that Facebook had leaked, or was hacked, a lot of passwords of their users.
You can’t assume that someone on Black Twitter or anyplace else is actually an American.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | April 21, 2019 4:21 AM |
The NYTimes article about Pete is what they're referring to. There have also been articles in HuffPost and Buzzfeed. If Pete can't get the support of POC, he's out of the game. They're the Dems' strongest supporters.

The person that started the Pete talk started it by lying and distorting Pete’s record.
I’m looking at several candidates right now. If I start reading on the internet that people shouldn’t vote for Warren because she beats her black housemaid with a tire iron, or don’t vote for Beto because he slept with Mike Pence, I’m going to have a problem with that too. A lot of this stuff comes from internet trolls that are posting all over Twitter and Facebook and they’re either paid Russians or Republican trolls at best.
They’re doing it because they want to damage Democratic candidates to help Trump. This stuff isn’t even to promote one Democratic candidate over another, it’s to weaken Democratic candidates in general so that whoever Trump faces will be heavily damaged. And it’s too soon to know who that is now, it could be any of them. So they go after whoever’s getting a lot of attention.
If next week it’s Beto in the lead, just wait. It will be “did you hear about the time Beto gang raped twenty girls in high school?” Don’t listen to people that make these wild claims with no substantiating evidence or links. The stuff on DL they’re claiming comes straight from twitter. There is no real backup because it didn’t happen. Don’t help those people.

R156 Beto is refusing to go on cable news - also a reason why they're bashing him. He is doing only grassroots stuff, doing Facebook livefeeds of his town halls and getting local media coverage. But there are five people doing CNN Town Halls tonight and a lot of people who don’t know anything about any of them will tune in.
It’s a good way to get free advertising and it’s actually substantive information, not just judging pies at the county fair or something. Not that candidates don’t have to do that too, but a lot of the coverage now is 30 second sound bites at best. Getting a whole hour for free is a good chance to make your pitch and it must be worth millions of dollars in paid advertising.
Saying I won’t do it, is actually a disservice to voters who are just starting to get engaged and don’t really know anything about any of them. If you spend one hour listening to Elizabeth Warren talking about policy, and zero hours hearing Beto’s policy, a lot of people are going to go for the one they can hear, even if it’s not necessarily the best one, out of default.
It’s early days, so this is a chance to say something that will make you break out and get a lead over others. I can see not wanting to cut a ribbon or something, but this is about ideas.
Anybody think Beto will do a Town Hall on a day when other candidates are not doing it too?

by Anonymous | reply 172 | April 22, 2019 9:11 PM |
That’s the same problem Hillary had. “It’s all on my website,” doesn’t work for people who don’t want to read pages of complicated policy.
We all know people have criticized Hillary for that.
by Anonymous | reply 173 | April 22, 2019 9:21 PM |
Let's see, first the problem is that he has no policies or plans -- until it is pointed out that in fact he does. Then the problem is that they're on his website. As opposed to where, exactly? Putting things like this on a website is apparently also a problem because Hillary did it.
Beto mentions policy in his meetings with voters and in response to questions. So what precisely would you have him do?

Don’t blame me because people didn’t want to read Hillary’s website. They didn’t. How many times have people complained about this?
People are lazy. You may want voters to all be engaged and reading page after page of technical policy on a website, but a lot of voters aren’t smart enough to understand what they’re reading. Others can’t be bothered. Most voters probably never looked at any of the websites, or past the first couple pages at most.
Remember who was elected election instead of Ms. Well-Thought Out Policies? Mr Build the Wall.
Voters are morons. If you can’t say it in a few words, they’ll never get it.

Voters either like a candidate or they don't. People like Beto. Elizabeth Warren can bring out 10 brilliant policies a day and nobody gives a fuck because nobody likes her. Hell, people adored Hillary compared to how much they don't like Warren.
I thought Warren would acquire Bernie's obsessed fans as their policies are so similar. They did a poll of Bernouts - if Bernie doesn't get the nomination, will they vote for Warren? Nope. They're a cult.
by Anonymous | reply 178 | April 22, 2019 11:37 PM |
Actually I saw some people on twitter who said they were Berners in 2016 and have been turned off him for one reason or another. They liked Warren. But most Berners, I agree, are not changing.
There seems to be a small cult of Warren followers that are going on and on about her policies being the best. Since it’s so early and some others haven’t even posted their policies in detail, I’m guessing those people are policy wonks. Which is not the majority, by any stretch of the imagination.
Look at Trump: “Me like wall.” “Groping women fun.” “Wife has big tits.” Elected. That’s what you’re dealing with.

At the She the People forum for WoC in Houston yesterday, Beto was brilliant. The crowd screamed enthusiastically when he came on and when he left was chanting Be-to, Be-to. Joy Reid was the moderator and looked surprised by his reception (being he's a white guy) and looked all flustered when he came on, telling him "oh, you're so tall in person". Is he short on TV?
He was asked about the minimum wage and went into a detailed discussion not only of the disparities between what white women, black women and Hispanic women earn (and naturally he had all the percentages) but pointed out that the ERA's ratification would help to alleviate the problem. Joy went: "Wow" when he brought up the ERA.
On Lawrence O'Donnell's show later, Joy was gushing about Beto: "you ask him a question and it's like a computer goes off in his head: he gives you a detailed answer with all the relevant facts placed in historical context - hits on every point you raised. Amazing."

Beto criticizes Obama over deportations and ICE
At the She the People Presidential Forum, for Rep. Beto O’Rourke criticized the Obama administration’s number of deportations and tactics used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The practices under this president, the practices under the last president, where families were broken up, where you had internal enforcement — I think in one year alone in the previous administration, 400,000 deportations from inside the United States, some people who had been here for decades, who pose no threat … We don’t need those internal roundups and deportation and enforcement.

I'm am black and not voting for Beto in the primary.
However, he is 100% accurate about Obama's immigration policies. Obama empowered ICE and dramatically ramped up deportations and arrests. It was first under him that ICE started doing outrageous things like pick people up leaving walmart or deporting immigrants after they testified in court cases.
He believed that if he got "tough" on immigration, republicans would give him immigration reform. He was 100% wrong. Republicans got all the cruelty and amoral immigration policy they wanted and Dems got nothing.
It's foolishness like that that should make it clear why picking another "Consensus building" candidate is is idiotic. There is NOTHING the GOP will ever do that would give a Dem president a win. So you should just pick a candidate that will pursue good policy and leave the GOP out of it.

All black people might not agree but every immigrant or person who spends time around immigrants knows Beto is exactly right. Beto is from Texas where people have seen the results of this draconian policy first hand.

You just went through 8 years of protests over ice immigration practices under the Obama administration. What do you mean only 5% share in the criticism of the Obama administration immigration practices? Beto’s view is not uncommon in the Southwest.

Beto's comments were well received at the forum because they were true. Obama was the Deporter-in-Chief. No getting around it and he is the only candidate who is honest enough to mention it.
He can't attack Trump on immigration if he ignores Obama. And immigration is going to be Trump's key issue to campaign on.
by Anonymous | reply 200 | April 26, 2019 4:29 PM |
Beto’s campaign started out by trying to attract the most talented people. Now those that signed up early based on the PR blitz are quitting, probably upon discovering the emperor has no clothes. Rats 🐀 fleeing a sinking ship, and the beginning of a sad end for a candidate who had no business running for President. Now that both the veep spot and senate have probably slipped away too.

That guy at the forum was incredible. Hell, if he wins Beto should name him Secretary of Labor. Beto's segment at the Union forum was excellent. He always has all the facts at his disposal. He has an amazing memory. He reels off facts, figures, names, places everything in historical context. Joy Reid said you ask Beto a question and it's like he's got a computer that goes off in his head - he's got all the receipts and speaks eloquently and passionately to boot. He's gonna score big in the debates.

“Beto claims to support the Green New Deal, but his plan is out of line with [the] timeline it lays out and the scale of action that scientists say is necessary here in the United States to give our generation a livable future,” Sunrise Movement executive director Varshini Prakash said in a statement.
Net-zero emissions by 2050 in the U.S. is about 20 years too late.
To stay below 1.5 degrees C we need net-zero GLOBAL emissions by 2050 at the VERY LATEST.
Beto's climate plan isn't consistent with climate science and will let millions die.

THE VIEW RIPS BETO
McCain started by asserting:
I think there is, there’s a sort of cognitive dissonance; I don’t know which comes first; you’re right. Bernie, Biden, Buttigieg, they’re polling in the top three (unintelligible) in Iowa, New Hampshire, most swing states right now. Polls can change. I don’t know if it’s that journalists are following them because they’re doing so well; I will say it is noteworthy Pete Buttigieg is a minority in and of itself; he’s an openly gay man so that’s historical as well.
I will say that what bothers me of all the coverage of the candidates so far is — and I know you like him, but Beto’s coverage infuriates me on an almost daily basis. No woman could ever lose running for Senate and then go on a Jack Kerouac road trip, abandoning his wife and kids, finding himself (Goldberg starts laughing) then do an announcement on the cover of Vanity Fair, that’s what he did, and then going on — he did; he left them and went on a road trip to find himself after he lost. No woman could do that. And then he went on —
Behar, interrupting, turning to host Abby Huntsman: “But we could say that about your husband.”
McCain: — Just one second. And then he went on the cover of Vanity Fair and said he was born to run. I believe that if Kamala Harris or Amy Klobuchar or Elizabeth had done any of those similar things they would be lambasted in the media. (Audience applauds)
Goldberg: Well, yeah, because if you have children, you can go, but nobody would understand.
McCain: You’re a grown-ass man finding yourself after you ran? I don’t understand it. (Audience applauds.)
Goldberg: Oh, honey.
McCain: I never get applause, so clearly people are agreeing with me. Imagine Kamala doing that?
Goldberg: Men are always, “Oh, I’ve got to find myself.” But women, you can’t get up and just leave your kids. You know, people will not — they don’t care if you find yourself when you have kids. You find your kids. That’s what you do.

Im not trying to attack anyone here or take any side.
However while polls this far out can be useful in gauging interest, they have a terrible track record of choosing the eventual nominee.
In 2016 Hillary was ahead by 50 points. She won by about 10. In 2012 Herman Cain looked like he would win the GOP nom this far out. In 2008 Hillary was also the front runner yet Obama won. And in on the GOP side Giuliani was the front runner, and he imploded when he got real coverage.
Again, the polls just dont become predictive until maybe a month before Iowa

Beto beats Trump by 10 points - he is at this stage the strongest Dem against Trump. This poll comes out this morning. And an old lady pundit on Daily Beast proclaims "Beto is finished!"...
Nicolle Wallace was pointing out the punditry is so down on Beto and are ignoring his strength in the field. Garrett Haake said there's an enormous disconnect between the MSM and what he's hearing as he follows candidates around. Bullshit R269 He knocked it out of the park. Bringing up the US' appalling history of exploiting Central America and how we are largely to blame for the migrants arriving at our border - was brilliant.
Kamala made a fool out of herself again with Tapper. If she's going to support Bernie's Medicare For All deal, it might be a good idea to actually find out what's in it. Don Lemon already had to correct her. Does she know what's in the Green New Deal she supports?
Pete's disappearing since his identity politics speech. Steve Kornacki on MTP had polls up showing Pete has zero support among PoC. In Indiana Pete gets solidly beaten by Biden among white people polled. Black people in Indiana gave Pete 0% of support.

I thought Beto did well on Rachel. He again didn't dive too deep but he did a good job of relating today's issues with our policies. He seemed informed and spoke well...although he does have more modern/young inflections in his speech patterns. I think he was a bit nervous or amped as he moves and fidgets a lot. He looked cute too.
by Anonymous | reply 272 | May 14, 2019 12:57 PM |
The maddow interview was fine. He didn't do anything wrong but it won't help him much either. He is at less than 4% in the polls. He needs a viral moment. I think the debates are his only chance. I hope he makes the most of it.
I cannot stress enough that his style of campaigning, which necessitates the media covering him constantly to show off his charisma, is just too risky for a general election. Its why I don't support him for the nomination, even though I like him personally.
As Beto has learned, no one can control the media, they are fickle and unreliable. They are fair weather friends. The same people that built him up now do hit pieces for no reason. Beto's style of politics is not the right choice for 2020.
by Anonymous | reply 273 | May 14, 2019 1:17 PM |

The electorate's not paying attention. They're conflating Biden with Obama and Joe Biden is NO Obama.
Beto was on The View today which was surprising given they've been bashing him for months. Whoopi Goldberg was fucking rude. What's that bitch's problem? McCain was - of course - a bitch. Beto did a great job. He looked good too. I wonder if some of the hostility from women in the media is because of his looks? They want a woman to be candidate even if none of the ones running can take down Trump. And fuck it, a hot guy shows up.

They aren't progressives, R296, they're BernieBros - and Beto handled the 2 Bernie plants at the Town Hall very well. They're freaking out because Ro Khanna who is Bernie's co-chair (but a close friend of Beto's) has formally co-sponsored the Medicare for America bill (which Beto supports) and which is the competition to Bernie's loopy Medicare for all plan.
The fossil fuel complaints were pushed by David Sirota, Bernie staffer, back when he was pretending to be an independent journalist. All Beto's donations in oil and gas came from individuals who work in the industry. 350,000 Texans work for oil and gas and some of them are Democrats.
Beto founded the No PAC Caucus and wrote the bill with Ro Khanna. He stopped taking any corporate, lobbyist and PAC money in 2013. Bernie took PAC money till 2016. Bernie also took oil and gas money and of course gun lobbyist money.

Beto was on Nicole Wallace Friday. I couldn’t watch him. I’m just not interested in his campaign.
by Anonymous | reply 304 | May 25, 2019 12:36 PM |
He had a great interview with Nicolle. She outright attacked the media that has been trashing Beto to try to bolster Pete's chances. Beto refused to criticize the media or Pete and the saturation coverage he receives.
He's on Face the Nation tomorrow so he's upping his cable news presence.
Pete meanwhile was asked yesterday why he was running for President. He said because I'd be a very good President and I can win. Somebody's a narcissist....
by Anonymous | reply 305 | May 25, 2019 3:23 PM |
Beto distinguished himself from the pack by producing a comprehensive immigration reform plan. He is the only candidate that has tackled immigration as a centerpiece of his campaign. The other candidate that might tackle immigration head on is Kamala, but that's probably down the line as she is trying to court black voters in the Southeast.
He really has balls of steel knowing the Dem party is trying to win over the racist vote of the upper/Midwestern states. In other words Pennsylvania, Ohio, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
He might be white on paper, but Beto is a true Hispanic candidate. He's more Mexican than Castro for Pete sake! : 0

btw, who's the cute twink bottom that is always following Beto round?
by Anonymous | reply 308 | May 30, 2019 9:32 PM |
That's Chris Evans. I assume he's gay. He's cute. Wish he'd shave that goatee through.
Gov. Jared Polis of Colorado-the only gay Governor now - was teasing Beto today about the goofy story of a pothead in Austin who broke into somebody's house and stole a ....popsicle. Mugshot: hot guy.
Jared Polis (@jaredpolis) "My friend @BetoORourke is such a wholesome, all American guy that even the criminal who impersonated working for his campaign only stole a popsicle"
LOL!

Beto last night in San Franciso at the CA Dem's conference got mobbed - Betomania's alive and well in California.
by Anonymous | reply 314 | June 1, 2019 3:12 PM |
Then Beto can run for President of California.
by Anonymous | reply 315 | June 2, 2019 12:24 AM |
R308, it's probably Chris Evans his communication director. Did you see the documentary on HBO about the Texas race? He's on there a lot.
by Anonymous | reply 316 | June 2, 2019 12:33 AM |
Chris was with Beto in San Francisco today. He's gorgeous. He shaved the horrible beard off. I can't figure out if he's really short. Beto's so damn tall, it's hard to judge other people's heights when they're standing next to him.

R315 Hello again, Chasten.
by Anonymous | reply 318 | June 2, 2019 2:45 AM |
Chris is gay. There was a livestream of a Town Hall of Beto's and it was Chris' birthday and a guy brought out a birthday cake, everybody sang Happy Birthday to Chris and the boyfriend kissed him to raucous cheers. Boyfriend was cute too.
by Anonymous | reply 319 | June 2, 2019 2:46 AM |
R318 I’m not Chasten. But Chasten has a better shot at the Presidency than Beto.

Beto is huge in California. He really is one of the best orators. He absolutely kills it on stage which bodes well for the upcoming debates.
The national polls are definitely ignoring the grassroots support for Kamala, Beto, and Pete in California. I would go as far as saying [bold]those three are probably the real frontrunners in the Golden State[/bold]. If the polls weren't so tilted to favor Sanders and Biden, which DL has done a great job of deconstructing polls showing how information field companies can arrange a poll in order to favor certain candidates, popular support in California would show different results.
by Anonymous | reply 322 | June 2, 2019 3:14 AM |
I honestly don't believe polls anymore after 2018. Who are they polling? I've never been polled in my life. There seems to be a common complaint that pollsters mainly get elderly people as they're the only ones who bother to answer unknown numbers on landlines.
by Anonymous | reply 323 | June 2, 2019 5:02 AM |
make that after 2016...
by Anonymous | reply 324 | June 2, 2019 5:03 AM |
Beto will win California! He's coming back strong now--if only the polls weren't all skewed towards the popular candidates they would show that. Beto is back and better than ever!
by Anonymous | reply 325 | June 4, 2019 2:05 AM |
Beto was exceptional at the convention. I can't wait for the debate where we could have Eric Swalwell, Beto O'Rourke, and Pete in the same debate.
by Anonymous | reply 326 | June 4, 2019 7:34 PM |
On twitter there's a poll on who is the hottest between Beto, Swalwell, Cory and Julian Castro. Beto's winning bigly.
by Anonymous | reply 327 | June 5, 2019 1:44 AM |
It's now a given that Beto can never win. He even ruined his chances in the veepstakes by running.
by Anonymous | reply 328 | June 7, 2019 2:36 PM |
Giggle. Beto's the only candidate who can beat Trump now that it's becoming increasingly obvious Uncle Joe's gone goofy (or goofier than before). Yesterday at the Atlanta DNC meeting it was more flagrant than ever when Biden spoke before Beto. Beto got a standing ovation from the African American audience - Joe didn't.
None of the others can flip purple or red states.
by Anonymous | reply 329 | June 7, 2019 5:01 PM |
Beto's currently polling at 2%. Competing with Cory and way behind Uncle Joe, Bernie, Kamala and Mayor Pete.

Texas Democratic Poll today: Beto's leading with 27% over Biden with 24%. Interestingly, Beto has the greatest support among black and Latino Texans. Castro polls at 2% and Kamala at 8%.
by Anonymous | reply 332 | June 8, 2019 7:51 AM |
Impressive. He might win his home state if Biden doesn't pull a rabbit out of the hat.
by Anonymous | reply 333 | June 8, 2019 4:39 PM |
Beto's currently polling at 2%
Beto and Pete are polling 5%
Beto, Warren, and Harris are now polling above Trump nationally.
by Anonymous | reply 334 | June 8, 2019 4:55 PM |
If Beto could win Texas, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania can just go fuck themselves right off the face of the earth.
by Anonymous | reply 335 | June 8, 2019 6:00 PM |
Sadly, in the same Texas poll Mayor Pete is again @ 0% with black Texans.
In contrast Latinos now favor Pete Buttigieg over Harris and Castro. Mayor Pete is #5 behind only O'Rourke, Biden,Sanders, and Warren. It's just too bad he didn't make a go at the Southwest much earlier.
by Anonymous | reply 336 | June 8, 2019 6:14 PM |
Pete Buttegieg has zero chance of winning the primary because he is never going to get any black supporters and that is mandatory to win. He's just a distraction for well-educated, white, voters currently, who would be much better off consolidating their support behind Beto. It's O'Rourke/Harris time.
by Anonymous | reply 337 | June 8, 2019 6:28 PM |
It's just outstanding to me how he cannot get over 0% with black people. I'm sorry but that is just wrong. Even Warren is barely making a dent.
by Anonymous | reply 338 | June 8, 2019 6:54 PM |
Why focus on red Texas? They'll vote Trump in the general no matter who he's up against.
by Anonymous | reply 339 | June 8, 2019 9:40 PM |
because Texas is a battleground state in 2020 R339.
by Anonymous | reply 340 | June 8, 2019 9:53 PM |
At least it's a battleground state if there is a Texan in the race.
by Anonymous | reply 341 | June 8, 2019 9:59 PM |
Trump cannot win without Texas - too many EC votes. The Texas GOP will go nuts if Beto's on the ticket and they have to spend 100s of millions trying to hold onto Texas - Texas is the most expensive media market state - worse than California. The GOP has been used to not having to invest a dime in Texas - Beto changed all that.
The DNC spends way too much time obsessing about the Rust Belt - it's the Sunbelt - Texas and Arizona - that are going to save the Democrats. And for that you need a candidate who appeals to Hispanics and Beto is the strongest candidate.
by Anonymous | reply 342 | June 8, 2019 10:50 PM |
because Texas is a battleground state in 2020
Says who? That's like calling California a "battleground". Beto failed to win the Senate against the universally loathed Ted Cruz in Texas. Why would they vote for him in the general? No one believes Texas can flip. Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Michigan, on the other hand, can be realistically won back. And Trump can't win without a couple of those. The DNC won't sink money into a state they're likely to lose.
by Anonymous | reply 344 | June 9, 2019 10:09 AM |
Ted Cruz is not universally loathed in Texas. He is more popular than Trump though. And as Beto was 'beaten' (if he was - the Texas Civil Rights Project is claiming 290,000 were not counted by Texas' corrupt Secretary of State who, thanks to all the Democrats who got elected to the Texas legislature riding Beto's coattails, has now lost his job) by 210,000 votes. Presidential year turnout is always higher than mid-terms though Beto got mid-term vote totals up by 150,%, youth vote up by 500%.
And I'll tell you a secret: Texans are Texans first of all. If Beto is the nominee running against the Yankee Trump - he'll beat him. Texans look after their own. The carpetbagger Cruz affected the phoniest Texas accent ever to campaign - an accent he doesn't actually have in real life. He wore cowboy boots everywhere, pretending he was a Good Old Boy. Trump can't do that.
In covering presidential politics, there are moments when you have to choose between the polls and what you see with your own eyes. After following O’Rourke for most of two days, I am going with my instincts: The solid, attentive crowds of more than a hundred that he attracted for Friday town meetings in smaller southern Iowa towns like Ottumwa and Knoxville don’t seem like a short-lived mirage to me. Nearly eight months before the opening-gun caucuses, his presidential campaign just doesn’t feel like a futile gesture by an also-ran who instead should be running for the Senate from Texas.
by Anonymous | reply 346 | June 10, 2019 7:42 PM |
I like Beto but he is not making inroads in Iowa ...yet. I think he is a tireless campaigner and a good one but if he doesn't start making up ground I would be concerned as Susan Collins.

R346, The New Republic is a cesspool of Bernie incels? And since when is going to University of Iowa a second rate gig? Assholes.
The New Republic is run by Bernie ex-staffers who come to Bernie's defense every time he gets in trouble like excusing Bernie's sympathy towards Sandinistas or hacking Hillary Clinton's campaign in 2015.
by Anonymous | reply 349 | June 10, 2019 10:30 PM |

The New Yorker had an article on Beto's days as a punk rocker. Some people on twitter started attacking Beto (he gets trolled by the GOP) and Cedric Zavala his bandmate in Mars Volta came to his defense with an obscenity laced series of tweets. Then some former bandmate of theirs chimed in to bitch that Cedric and Beto spent more time competing on how many women they could fuck than they did playing.
